Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

How many times does this need to be explained? No, they arent.

Bloodborne is a new IP which wouldnt have been made had it not been for Sony approaching From for Next Gen. Bloodborne is like Scalebound.

TR is an established multiplat IP that would have been made and released for all platforms. MS bought exclusivity.

My comment was in reference to Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive not Tomb Raider.

How the hell MS thought that this wouldnt cause a shitstorm is beyond me. Seeing all the negative reactions to this decision it just reinforces the image of MS being the evil coorperation together with EA.

Besides it doesnt even make financial sense....amazing times.

To be fair, every single time they nabbed a third party exclusive in recent memory, there's a negative shitstorm. Even in cases like Dead Rising 3 and Titanfall, when they were directly responsible for the continued existence of those games' development cycle.

SE is free to do what they want, though limiting sales of one of your biggest games to the platform with the smallest number of sales does seem a bit self-limiting. And while missing out on the new TR game is a little disappointing, it's not enough of a 'must-play' title to make me go buy an Xbox One just to play it (the Halo collection, on the other hand...)

I fully expect this game to see release on other platforms at some point, probably through the release of a GOTY edition or something similar. I can wait.

It sounds like it will come to pc eventually but never playstation

Seems like a splinter cell conviction/ alan wake type deal

This is basically SE harvesting organs from CD to sell to msoft

I feel terrible for everyone that works at CD

This could backfire if it's a timed exclusive with improvements to the pc and ps4 versions that could be made.

Not like i care the only tomb raider game I'm looking forward to is temple of orisis.

it's good that some of you are all coming up with "they don't want to compete with Uncharted" as a reason...

But last I checked, Uncharted isn't on the PC!

Damn props to MS. They have bitchslapped Sony last year making an exclusive game with an iconic, exclusive team like insomniac make a game for them, Ted Price stating it's only possible on Xbox One. This year, they announce Tomb Raider, an iconic game that raised to power through Sony, exclusive fall 2015 release.

God damn.

You sound like a really inept PR spokesperson. Insomniac had already released a multiplatform game (one that bombed, mind you) before they announced SO. They haven't made a game that sold well in a very long time, so it wasn't exactly a "bitch slap," as you call it. Second, Tomb Raider is going head-to-head with Uncharted 4. If you recall, the TR reboot borrowed quite heavily from the Uncharted series, so I'm hard pressed to view this as a huge loss. Granted, I'd like the option to play both, in case Rise turns out to be better than the original (I wasn't a fan), but I still feel pretty good about getting what I see as the better of the two.

Already have enough on my plate for PC in 2015: The Witcher 3, GTA V, Batman: Arkham Knignt, etc. I can hold out for RofTR. Disappointed, but it's not the end of the world.

Does this even make sense? "Gaming communities"?

Yea. I mean, see for example the massive hype something like Bloodborne creates among the gaming community. Sure, it won't sell like CoD, but it's a lot more important to the community. It's not that hard to understand.

Bayo going to Nintendo (who didn't even have the first one) is much bigger deal, in my eyes, than TR going on X1 only (where at least it doesn't screw over every fan of the original, just non-xbox owners). You get what I'm saying?

I'm calling it now. Biggest disappointment of Gamescom. What a damn shame. I can't imagine, how much money MS dropped on their feet to secure this unholy deal.

Just caught up with this news. Can't believe this is an Xbox exclusive. I realize they are starved for games, but come on. Was really looking forward to this on PS4 next year.

Obviously the cash from this agreement won't have any affect on Crystal Dynamics ever, so we obviously cannot call this anything but a "moneyhat". Obviously.

Oh Speedy. Never change.
Saying Microsoft is pushing this deal to sell consoles isn't wrong, but to say it's a desperate move is just hilarious.

Microsoft made a smart move ensuring they have a product in the same genre to compete against Sony's biggest hitter in 2015 (assuming Uncharted isn't pushed into 2016). They've purchased Third Party titles before as exclusives, I don't consider it desperate, I consider it smart. It makes the Xbox brand look stronger while also covering the weak points Microsoft has in their lack of First Party Studios.

Set stuff straight post. Some of my tweets yesterday are not related to the xbox exclusive thing. My tough decision is not related.

Wait wait wait wait, hold up.

Didn't somebody say Sony stole Tomb Raider 2 from Sega Saturn to effectively bury the system? We're glossing over that right? Yeah glossing, check.
Sony approached to sign an exclusivity deal with TR2 (Retro gamer n°78). Obviously it was a nail in the coffin to the Saturn, and Sony didn't want the system to revert it's fate.

Sony approached Namco to secure exclusivity with SC3; the second game sold best on the GCN, and Sony didn't want the GCN to gain any traction.

Both basically the same as this; this is a business, and all hardware makers will do anything in their power to make their systems sell.

I think this is a GREAT exclusive for the Xbone, a HUGE business decision. And if MSFT could land a deal with Squenix, then Sony could have done a deal too.

I'm absolutely sure Miyazaki wouldn't have directed another Souls-like without Sony's "help".

Sony lost an exclusive IP because of an accident, they simply took their IP back, and they used a new name to not piss Namco off probably. Nowhere near the same thing.

It seems that maybe the devs asked Sony for help and Sony said nope (not expecting that Microsoft would make it exclusive)

Even if this is true, man. What a stupid industry. Why is it Sony's or Microsoft's responsibility to fund another company's game? This is like Kickstarting AAA games. I don't see the excuses made for these publishers. Is Hollywood going to follow suit?

"Hey, world. You want a new sequel to popular movie X? Well, we need to invest YOUR money to do so."

Cut celebrity voice actors if you need money. Or music bands that cost too much.

Um, yea? When it comes to gaming communities like this Bayo is more beloved than TR. I mean, CoD sells 20 million copies but you don't see people singing it's praises. Bayo going Nintendo only was a much bigger deal since Bayo is huge in the gaming community.

Sorry no. That is not a fact.

And thats the reason why I can't see myself buying an Xbox One..

This. If anything this deal will do more harm than good for MS and SE; it will only piss of more people and hurt the franchise in a long run. MS will never learn, perhaps they should call themselves
Moneyhat Game Studios.

SE keeps making "weird" decisions, especially considering the position they are in... will be interesting to see how exactly they are going to do with this... my bet is that this won't help them in the long run.

So people upset about this who do not have an Xbox, for plenty of different reasons no doubt, are being called fanboys for being upset they can't play the new tomb raider...makes complete sense /s

I'd call the people saying that fanboys more then those who are annoyed by this, which includes me.

Anyway, I'm still thinking this is timed exclusive until Feb or May. At least I hope so! If not spose I won't be playing it.

This wouldn't be a problem if it was a bayo2 situation, but this is just a ploy to deny the leading selling console (ps4) gain more momentum.

Sony should strike a deal with capcom having SFV exclusive, the reactions would be the same.
I would argue not actually.

SF4 was built on the fact that the Xbox 360 was in the lead and runs slightly better (see PS3lag etc.) but in recent years pretty much all fighting games minus Street Fighter have been on Ps3. Not only that Capcom follows the money and since the Ps4 is selling more than the Xbox One, I don't think it would surprise that many people if it only came out on the PS4.

Then again SFV is a ways away so we will have to see.

I have to say, I think this actually makes Microsoft look bad -- the opposite of what you're hoping for in these situations.

Basically, they just took millions of fans hostage.

Tomb Raider was announced as multi platform -- MS steps in and makes it so people can't play the game ... How do they think that will encourage those people to buy their system? It's kind of the opposite ... It'll piss them off and make them hate the company. If they had done this BEFORE the game was announced, it would be a completely different issue because the expectations would have been different. After the fact, you can't help but look like a villain.

Those reactions then where probably also heavily influenced by their DRM plans.

Anyway if they want to improve their image this shit doesnt help ...it will be seen by many gamers as a dick move.

sucks.. oh well.. Guess it just means I'll have to wait for the definitive edition for PS4 or PC. lol at MS trying to moneyhat their way out of distant second by announcing an exclusive moneyhat ~15 months in advance.

Its not always about the money to buy a new console.
I for one have a fulltime job and a daughter.
I dont have the time for a second console, it woukd be a waste of money for the 2 games i would want on xbox one.
So ye im dissapointed and hate the fact that SE let MS do this
Just shows you SE stop giving an F to their fans a long time ago.

This is a fairly big megaton. Will Sony now announce something that they weren't originally planning to (as in something they were saving for another time) in order to counter? Can they make that kind of change to thier press conference in a few hours time?

It's for Holiday 2015, they've got lots of time. But realistically there won't be any counter, and Sony will just keep working on U4 is all.
