Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Jim Sterling already tweeted this but I thought the same thing.

Square Enix viewed Tomb Raider as a failure sales wise and it was sold on a lot of platforms. Yet they went ahead to make it exclusive to the lowest install base for all current gen consoles (yes that includes the Wii U).

This industry!

Must have got a fat stack of cash in return.

I don't get it. They've jumped console platforms with gusto since leaving Nintendo for Sony and then hopping in bed with Nintendo again for exclusives like Dragon Quest IX and X and Crystal Chronicles.

This exclusivity move is not outside of their scope and their fans should he used to it by now.

I'd say it's largely a different fanbase these days, at least as far as Final Fantasy is concerned. It has amassed a lot of people who didn't game prior to PlayStation, either probably because they were too young or because the franchise didn't have the mainstream appeal that started with VII. I think it's especially the young audience that has a very strong attachment to the PlayStation brand. It's all speculation, but I don't think we'd have gotten the absolutelly batshit response to the FF XIII announcement if those speculations aren't at least somewhat true. The series never really was multi-platform to those fans. But yeah, at some point you've just gotta get used to business being business. People get too emotional, it all blows over, and then we're back to playing video games again.

Well when MS offers to drive a dump truck full of money to you, that's one way of mitigating risk.

The problem is I have an XB1 and this deal doesn't make me want to get the game. It basically makes me want to stay as far away from it as I can. I don't understand how anyone can say this is good in any way for anybody. Crystal Dynamics is getting roasted. Square Enix is getting roasted. Microsoft is getting roasted...again. Where is the positive in this?

But when the Destiny stuff happened, everyone said it was okay to have timed stuff.

Now this happens and everyone loses their minds?

Got the last one one PC, won't be getting the new one. Shame, as it was fairly decent, and could've been great with a little work. I fear this could be a crippling blow to a rebooted franchise, considering how unhappy they were with the original sales.

The thing that bothers me with TR is that it was first announced as a multiplatform title.

Yeah, I'm not too cool with this part. When titles are announced as exclusive from the get-go its one thing, but when it's like this it just feels... weird.

I don't really have a problem with exclusives though - choosing to only own one console this gen meant I was going to miss out on some stuff. It's just how the business works. Hell, if the XB1 gets eventually gets an exclusive line-up as good as the Playstation's, maybe I'll break down and buy one.

That being said, I was very much looking forward to TR, so possibly not being able to play it does leave me a bit salty.

EDIT: OH shit CBOAT sighting while I was typing XD Oh well then, I'll just wait for the PS4 Game of The Year Edition!

yeah I don't understand what he means he could mean it's there for good or he could mean it's just timed, it just adds more confusion to this mess.

Geoff only managed to get a vague "Holiday 2015 exclusive" reply to his questions. Shinobi says that it may be timed as well. Take that as you will.

Person that told me about many MS 'things' previously is telling me it's indeed a timed exclusive.

I'd be in the dick
While surprising, this deal kind of makes sense to me. Most of TR 2013's sales were on Playstation platforms but with Uncharted coming next year, it'll get overshadowed there. This will allow them to get more support on Xbox One then eventually release on PS4 when Uncharted hype has died down.

im just going to say 'boo' and move on.

i dont think its nice to pay devs monies for exclusives, timed or not. Only creates backlash imo

Agreed. From a fan perspective it's such a pointless waste of resources. An Xbox One owner was always going to be able to play Tomb Raider. Instead of Microsoft using that money to make a game that wouldn't be made otherwise as Nintendo did with Bayonetta 2, they waste it on keeping it off PS4. That Xbox one owner receives no benefit except I guess for the 10 year old owner in the playground who can use it in his arguments.

This just sounds like it's desperation time for MS. Ok, maybe desperate is a strong word, but they're making these kinds of moves because they're getting real concerned. I just wish they'd do something besides the standard "throw money at the problem" method of practice.

Give me another Rallisport Challenge.
Give me another Crimson Skies.
Give me another Project Gotham.

Give me a good reason to want your console, MS.

Comparing DLC to a full game?

Well, now that this game is supposedly a timed exclusive, I can see your point. But the majority of the outrage in this thread was over the idea that it was a full exclusive to X1. And I don't see how you can compare exclusive DLC to that. But now that it's supposedly timed Exclusive, I'm curious how people feel about that.

Are you okay with timed exclusives for major titles?

Cboat hinted it may not be a +3 years exclusive, so what is it ? Full exclusive ? 2 years exclusive ? 1 year exclusive ? 6 months ?

We still know nothing, so I don't know what's the big deal about his post.

cboat also hinting as well
Think we can call it a day considering MS took itself out of the publisher spot.

Beta version is not the final product.

The game is coming out in september for everyone to play.

People are "losing theirs minds" because this game was announced multi-platform and won't release on multiple platforms because of this new deal.

Would people be upset about TR2's exclusivity if they didn't have an interest in it?

I'm just finding out about this, but was there some sort of demo shown that indicated it was bringing in elements from the classic titles (actual tomb exploration, platforming) to turn GAF mindshare around?

I could have sworn that Tomb Raider 2013/Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was one of the most disappointing titles, if not despised, recently to much of GAF. The announcement at E3 was met with a rather collective meh as well.

So is this thing just about principle? That Microsoft is the one doing it (after reading a lot of Microsoft needs exclusives talk lately, even if it meant moneyhatting)?

I'm really wondering where this overall 180 on interest in the series is coming from and 69/70 pages of outrage when Quantum Break, something everyone was interested in and probably next to Bloodborne as Gamescom's Most Anticipated, discussion is barely a raindrop in a puddle in comparison.

With that said, I really hope what Shinobi was told is true and isn't too long. I have an Xbox One, but unless this is a Bayonetta 2, Titanfall situation, everyone should be able to enjoy it on the platform they want to.

Just means it's another reason for me to perhaps pick up a Xbox One this fall. Already considering it for Halo Master Chief collection and Sunset Overdrive, this will be a nice addition for me to get for the system.
