For PS+ members, coming with the PS4 Firmware 2.0 update sometime this year.

Adam Boyes said:
SharePlay - allows PS+ members to either take turns playing games remotely or play remotely local multiplayer games!

-Invite any friend anywhere to take turns playing games, essentially "passing the controller" to the friend while the game is playing.
-Play local multiplayer online using this method.
-No need to download or own the game, streams like PS Now.

More details soon. This sounds crazy!

edit: more details-

Today at the PlayStation press conference at Gamescom, we will deliver on yet another promise from the PS4 announcement and introduce Share Play, coming to PlayStation 4 later this fall.

The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let’s say that with games… you’ll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light’s local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can’t quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can’t get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you’re hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall.

Didn't they announce this already at E3?

There's more info now but I don't think this is as big as they made it seem out to be.

I can't even wrap my head around it. I wonder if publishers will be able to opt out and impose restrictions.

If that works with every game, that's amazing. I'm sure pubs have an opt out like with all the other share features, but hopefully this is as widely supported as the others.

This is a very exciting feature. You can help your friends beat hard levels by playing for them.

Sony is making a PS4 a powerhouse on MAX levels.

They talked about this at the ps4 reveal and I thought that was truly a next gen feature.

I'm glad they didn't just forget about it

Madden '08 had this feature and it was one of my favorite features in Madden, but they inexplicably dropped it from Madden '09 and beyond without any mention of it again. It allowed you to invite friends into your dynasty games so that they could play as your opponent... My friends and I had a blast with that mode. But then dropped never to be heard of again.

Sounds cool.

Little worried about latency ... if you're streaming the game *and* playing it online.

This is such a cool set of features, hopefully they can pull it off. In a perfect world, it will even turn formally only couch co-op games like Towerfall into more or less an online co-op game. I don't know how it will work or how well it will work, but I'm very glad Sony is trying to make it happen because as I get older and my best friends are further away and harder see in person, things like this mean a whole lot.

A nice feature for people who gave up at the drinking mini-game in Watch Dogs.

Looking for someone who passed the 7th level at Pawnee.

This does sound amazing, if I can ever convince my friends to get a PS4. They're the type that buy one game a year, so I could possibly just let them play my games(if I leave my system on with the game they want loaded) when I'm not home or not using my PS4.
That'd be kinda cool, like a fancy demo system. Is that how it'd work?

Not sure i understand the business side for publishers who choose to allow this. What are they getting? With single PS+ free games it's easy to come with an agreement but for this? Is Sony going to keep tabs on the games that were the most played using that feature every month and then divide the PS+ sub money with the publishers proportionally?

There will be a host advantage for any competitive game that depends on reaction time but there are a lot of games that latency isn't a game breaker. Turn based games would be especially great with a feature like this.

So happy this didn't get killed.

Going to use this to demo games my friends bought if I'm on the fence (and vice-versa).

If it works well, it'll be genius (and on the other hand, possibly backfire I guess).

Maybe people will enjoy the game and not want to play with terrible lag

Doesn't this feature make Far Cry's feature irrelevant?

Not precisely, because FC4 coop feature works only in fullscreen. That game does not support splitscreen.

SharePlay turns PS4 into small Gaikai server. What is rendered on the screen can be sent via internet to any other PS+ player, and then he can play it either solo or in coop with you.

Have you tried PS Now? The tech is really amazing. The latency was high imperceptible to me.

Not yet, but I will once it comes to Europe. I remain very sceptical. On top of controller lag and monitor input lag, you're adding a third source of inconsistent lag. That's potentially enough to put the remote player at a disadvantage.

I believe that this is the same feature.

With Far Cry 4 you need to d\l a chunk of the game; there's a 2-hour limit and the owner only has 10 keys to offer. It's basically an innovative demo solution Ubisoft came up with but for some reason only offering it on PS.

You are "passing the controller" as Sony describes it, which probably means you aren't using your own saves, trophy data or anything when using SharePlay, plus your friend has to be online and let their PS4 stream while playing. That's how I think it works anyways.
