BLOODBORNE Impressions Thread : And so the Nightly Hunt Begins

It's not a spiritual Souls successor unless you can walk around levels with your defeated foes between your legs.

I wish they'd give corpses more weight, it's silly.

Anyway, I'll have to start saving money because this is the game that will make me buy a PS4.

What's baffling about it? The character movement and reliance on dodging rather than blocking led me to believe this may have been a faster title than demon and dark souls with meaningful enemies that are all dangerous enough to kill you, not like the fodder the general are in most action games.

Kinda like.. Ninja gaiden.

If it's just a retread of the same souls formula with an added gun, then I'm not interested. No matter, not everyone has to like a game and there is no reason to get defensive about it.

I really don't understand this at all.

So the player character is more nimble and agile in this? That's something that annoyed me in the short time I played Demon's Souls and Dark Souls - which was an admittedly short amount of time for both since I sucked - but maybe I was just playing the wrong character type.

So you wanted a Souls game to be a Souls game but didn't want it to be a Souls game, gotcha.

Ninja Garden sounds very Zen to me.

Mobile. Autocorrect.

What in the world gave you that hope?

Does From Software have a long history of Ninja Gaiden like games?

Loving what I am seeing. I know I said I was on a Bloodborne media blackout but damnit it all if this isn't some good shit.

No. But they do have a history of different styles of gameplay. I was hoping for a curveball

You thought the spiritual successor to Demon Souls wouldn't be like Demon Souls? Wah? Get outta here.

When has it been described by that as the developers?

I think you represent the weird split between 3D action game players.

Some prefer the weighty, physics heavy gameplay of Souls/Monster Hunter while others prefer the Fast, Combo Heavy arcade style of Bayonetta/DMC/Ninja Gaiden

I actually like both but Always preferred the former. Nothing beats the feeling of a perfectly times blow where you can almost feel the weight behind it. (You MH players know what I'm talking about)

Don't see why you can't have both in the same game honestly. The beauty of Ninja gaiden is it doesn't have to be fast and combo heavy. Some the best weapons have extremely slow start ups and cause tons of damage, while having that "weight" behind them.

Hey, I remember ninja garden. Wasn't that the most brutal game to cut bushes in?

See above.

Someone manage to film a really short clip though

That item picking animation and ragdoll is what important here.

And this. Is it just me but does this game look like it moved and controls much differently than Dark 2?

I would have expected them to use Dark 2's engine but it seems to me they're using a modified version of Demons/Dark1 which is a good thing in my opinion!

Wear lighter armor.

Even if it has random minor dips is fine to me than missing this kind of experience and game in my life. I need the game i want to play in balanced way which the developers feels its right for their game not the 60FPS. Let the PC gamers stick to 60FPS and miss many games like this from Console (i don't think they are real games to me, instead they are FPS gamers who want FPS in game than experience which developer feels right).

Wow, all in all, not bad.

One thing though: It's the marketing departement which decides that the game should be 30FPS, not the developer.

moves like Demonsouls

might be a reworked DS engine with integrated DK2 stuff

The game is faster than the Souls series, E3 impressions even indicated that. But aspects of the Souls games are still the backbone to the game. You still have a lot of animation priority which isn't something that'd go too well in a character action game like DMC or Ninja Gaiden.

Where'd you get that from?

Here's one quote for you
4Gamer:
I’d like to talk in a bit more detail about what kind of game Bloodborne is.

Miyazaki:
The format of the game is very close to Demon’s Souls. It’s in the action RPG genre and it features a behind-the-back camera. From there, however—the setting, story, various gameplay elements, etcetera—will go in their own direction for this game.

Go read the interview.

This is really what I'm hoping for! Bring back the fair and not broke hitboxes/enemy tracking of the old games with improvements like cloth physics from Dark 2 engine slapped on top. I think you can already see that's what they've done looking at how the character moves around/backsteps. Also the fact that weapons now appear on your back when you unequip them! I'd be sooo happy if this turns out to be the case.

I've never played any souls games cause I've been intimidated by the difficulty and the how time consuming they are... However, I think after watching this, I need to jump in

You were probably wearing too much armour or using giant slow weapons, the movement in Souls is zippy and streamlined or slow and hulking depending on your gear - but it's always on point (well not DS2, but the first two games).

Technically

Bloodborne will be the fastest and Nimblest game in the series. But it still will adhere to the realistic physics the series is know for.

Realistically weighted characters, animations etc.. You wont see the Ninja Gaiden/Bayonetta stuff here man. Not gonna happen.

During an impressions video from the closed door event at E3, Kyle from PSU said that they targeting Demon's Souls difficulty.

How is the difficulty guys?

I found Demon Souls to be harder than Dark Souls. But that might just be me personally.

Even the original Dark Souls could be played in a nimble and speedy fashion.

It depended heavily on the weapons you use and the weight associated with them (armor included)

It IS however in the style of realistic physics. Characters are grounded and dont double jump/wall jump etc.

There is a clear distinction between Arcade style and Realistic style with stuff like God of War/Castlevania LOS falling somewhere in the middle

Expect quick attacks, dodge rolls, back steps, side steps etc..

Where do they say that marketing decides that? Insomniac as a developer decided that 60fps wasn't worth it. Mike Action wrote that and he was the engine director for Insomniac.

Don't be so focused on his position in the company. It's still a marketing decision. His argumentation is identical to what a marketeer would present.

From what we've seen and know so far, if FROM fixes the performance issues in the final build, we are talking about one of the best if not the GOTG.

Are they aiming for locked 30? Was really hoping they would aim for 60.

60 would have been really cool

But judging from some of the Visual I am seeing it looks like they want to balance High fidelity and framerate.

If they can Lock things down to 30 solid Ill be pretty happy. Aw hell Ill be happy even if the game dips here and there. Just no blighttown areas please

It would've been nice if Sony made something like Nintendo's Treehouse event and "officially" demonstrated some of their games. :/

Its weird how much they are holding back for a game that is 6 months away.... I wonder if a delay is inevitable

With how crazy gamescom is you only have one chance to allude the Sony guards and film gameplay.

Its going to be damn hard to find any footage. At least we have words....

I am sincerely hoping they have a few authorized media outlets to give footage to...

Maybe even a complete demo walkthrough

That's asking a lot. They're already stretched thin putting all their manpower on the show floor to stop people from filming anything which would get their games more attention!

Well, I doubt there's anything inherent in the design that calls for 30 fps or that would be ruined by 60 fps, seeing as Dark Souls 2 probably worked just as well at 60 fps on PC. It would just look and play smoother. It's really just a graphical trade-off, and how optimized the engine is. No developer is targeting 30 fps because it feels or plays better at 30. If they could take their exact same game and have it run at 60 they would. The whole fps is for FPSs thing and 60 would not be right for this game/genre is off-base.

Highly doubtful.

These are the guys who created Demons Souls, on both sides, so they will naturally build a new engine that has the same overall weight and feel of the original product, especially when it is done on purpose as homage to the work they did before.

I think this is a completely new engine that From will likely use throughout the generation. With obvious homages to Demons Souls

lol. I'm sure they are saving the suspense for when they announce this Gamescom Demo to be released on PSN come November for all to play and worship.

Bloodborne is going to be the game that gets me to buy a PS4 when it comes out. The game looks beautiful. I could really care less about framerate drops as long as it doesn't drastically affect gameplay (i.e. Blighttown in DS1).

That being said, ragdoll physics are completely stupid. Killing a huge knight in DS1 and then kicking it down a hallway as you run is ridiculous. Removing it in DS2 was the right decision. Putting it back in Bloodborne is not.

It's a minor thing but something that always annoyed me about DS1 and took away some of the immersion factor, IMO.

I love seeing that people are more excited for the insane rag-doll than the game itself.

Because that's exactly how I feel. Nothing beats rolling into corpses and getting them stuck in your armpits.
