NPD Sales Results for July 2014 [Up1: 3DS LTDs, Wii U LTDs, Tomodachi]

Xbox One might not have even beaten Wii U in software this month. Sony's statement probably means around 60% of next gen software. Mario Kart U is way ahead of anything on Xbox One and even the Wii U version of Lego Marvel beat the Xbox One version.

Eh, you might be right, it all blurs into one. I thought for some reason there was an expectation that sales would be notably affected again this month.

My bad, must've been thinking of MC or something.

No you're right, people expected "momentum" and "legs".

The placement of the Xbone version of Watch Dogs should be setting off red alerts at MS right now.

If all the other multiplatform games produce similar results then they are in trouble.

What are you even talking about? MK8 big impact was end of May and June (with 140k). And the momentum is that a 4 weeks month is quite above what a 4 week month was before MK8.

And yet is still well below 100k which is a pathetic number.

Never said the baseline wouldn't be higher than before. I'd said that the jump would be barely noticiable and still pathetic, and here we are.

Anecdotal but on the day of TLoU Remaster release, my store had about 30 copies in stock. Around noon that same day, only 2 copies remained. Well, technically 1 copy remained since I put one aside for myself.

We've been getting constant restocks on the game since it came out, and it keeps selling well. This remaster has definitely paid off big time for Sony.

Yes...smart decision to keep Tomb Raider off the PlayStation platform at launch. Really forward thinking there Square...

they're probably trying to maximize sales on the platform where it will sell less while also lining their pockets with the exclusivity deal

it's a shitty move but I honestly think it works out in Square's favor

Last month, the bump was going to be this month. The bump was a wrinkle.

Don't give me that. You expected 140k last month? And if you look at the prediction thread, nobody was predicting higher than that for this month. Maybe a handful predicted higher for that on a weekly basis (which didn't make sense either).

EDIT: Beaten.

Even for a lot of Nintendo games.
True, I think Nintendo is probably the poster child for having the most exceptions to that rule.

For Sony I'd say The Last of Us and Gran Turismo 5 had good tails and price stability. While for Nintendo you can probably find a lot of titles over the years where that is the case.

Are you making stuff up or did people really expect Wii U to sell more this month?

I mean, there's no reason to believe it would go up in July, especially compared to June (MK8+E3).

yeah I think people were hoping that wiiU would get a solid sales boost for a while with MK.... but if this month's 81K is true, that graph is back to flat as F#$%.... gamecube is looking like a smash hit in comparison, and not sure if anything is left from original chalkboard? price cut again? supersmashbros?

Anybody know what this is referencing? I don't visit/follow polygon.

Polygon did an "analysis" article on historical Mario Kart game sales and tie ratio's with previous Nintendo Consoles and predicted MK8 would only have 1.2M lifetime sales worldwide. The game already surpassed that last month and is on the verge of beating it in ust the US alone.

still don't get why/how that many people are willing to pay more than 30$ for a one year old remaster though.
Two reasons:
  • It was such a good game, people felt it was worth the asking price to doulble dip to play an even better version.
  • People who own a PS4 that didn't have a PS3 last gen and wanted to play last years GOTY.

81k would still be a huge step up from the 30-40k it was getting prior to MK8.

Edit: Not a good source.

Either way, damn good for Last of Us. Well deserved, because it's now the best next gen game out there.

I definitely get where that line of thought is coming from, but last-gen games are only getting older, and with the summer drought coming to an end they're going to compete with actual next-gen releases.

More than on remaster success (except for Halo, because everybody knows that's gonna sell like hot cakes) I'd put my money on a publisher getting burned by low sales of a remaster (depending on how much money would go towards remastering a game of course, but I bet SE can put together some $100m for a remaster, they're good with numbers like that).
hypothetically if Uncharted 4 hit next winter, Uncharted Remaster at end of July would be absolutely perfect.
maybe even have UC4 multiplayer beta included.
I could see that doing incredibly well.
