I've never understood why in the world even months like January right after Christmas seem to get more releases than the summer months when kids are out of school. I suppose that kids have more to do in the summer, but the summer droughts always seemed like a bad idea.

I would love for that to happen.

It won't, unfortunately. Besides dates like Black Friday and some holidays, why are so many games in the last quarter of the year? Is there any study or something like that?

I would like to think that the sales of Watch_Dogs, Mario Kart 8 and the The Last of Us would be enough to persuade publishers to the contrary. *fingers crossed*

So with Nintendo's #s, 3DS software sales are the following?

Total (as of last report) - 171.49m

US now = 40m

Japan =
(from Dengeki)
FY 2013 - 23,279,483,
FY 2014 so far = 4.790.562

Does anyone have the rest of the JP numbers? I'm guessing that close to half of the 3DS's software sales are from there...

Huh. There must have been excess stock of it or something. I can't remember, did those have normal Vitas or the 3G ones. I still have yet to sign up for my 3G even after 2 years. Oh, well. Nice option to have, considering it's month to month and not a contract.

Pretty sure they are WiFi only. Maybe they were shipped in place of new ones due to shortages? The boxes were fresh and were not there in the past couple weeks. The PS4's always rotate out of stock so it'll be interesting to me if these move.

I wasn't actually planning on picking up TLOU:R anytime soon but I'm pretty tempted to just go out and grab a copy. Anyone know if Gamestop'll accept a 360 with a crack in the front? Still plays fine.

Nitendo just doesn't get it do they, they needed something in July, any effing thing, not to mention this month. Anything with a name some cache, instead they have that #wiiudroughtaid bs, that I doubt they realize isn't a good thing.

When you are so behind the 8-ball, you don't worry about what anyone else is doing, you do everything in your power to improve your situation. If it really is dire, you pull out all the stops. I guess they just don't see the situation like the market is trying to tell them it is.

I mean, really, they should have had a Zelda Wiimake-esque release or better lined up for July and August.

Well at least I will enjoy what eventually comes out on the system and can remember the quirky fun times I have had.

I am not disappointed with the WiiU and it's situation, but I am saddened that Nintendo seems to not be as desperate as we as gamers would have hoped.

Q4 has always been packed because holidays, then delaying to Q1 to give games more time/avoid getting crushed by the packed holiday season became popular.

There's also the fact that people tend to spend more time going outside, traveling, etc. and less time at home during the summer.

What exactly does Gies smoke to arrive at these magnificent conclusions of his?

while I like to shit on Gies as much as anyone, wasnt this just after the game had been revealed?

Who really had a clue how successful it was going to be back then?

I remember Last E3 this whole forum was shitting on destiny........

FIFA 14 got quite the World Cup boost, it seems. It was ranked #5 on June 2014's NPD charts, and then it held out stronger than Watch_Dogs and Mario Kart 8, which both dropped below it.

Totally worth it, too. My most heavily played Xbox One game right now.

What do you think Wii Sports Club was released for? :).......
Just kidding.

You gotta be a special breed of person to get me to defend a Wii U purchase.

Anywho, moving on.

Is it about time we stop pretending Amazon rankings dont give us some kind of insight of how the month has played out? No they don't give the true story, but except for December, the ratio of XB1/PS4 sales have been close to or reflected the NPD numbers.

The Xbox One was ahead of the PS4 in Amazon rankings in December, actually.

Uncharted had never set the world on fire? Jesus Christ, he's like the people that think any game sitting at less than a 90 on Metacritic must be terrible. Selling millions of copies of anything is nothing to be scoffed at, especially in an industry where turning a profit on AAA is becoming increasingly difficult. That's he's only adding to a destructive way of thinking within the industry is even worse. "We must sell 10 million or we'll have failed in the eyes of at least one douchebag in the industry, so let's play it safe."

F*** that guy.

Nice result for TLoU. Deserves that top spot.

Wii U bump didn't happen then. I'm truly shocked, honest.

I thought the MK bump was last month, where it sold 140k in the US? This is the 3rd month of tracking for MK, the first was I think 97k with MK only on the market for a weekend. Its not gonna keep bumping it month after month the console is gonna stabilize until Smash most likely.

Which should probably put any attempt to XB1 to sell vastly more than the PS4 even in the US to rest as well... I mean, if Wii U's still being affected by its disastrous reveal than, oooh boy, MS should count their lucky stars that XB1 even has the current American fanbase of theirs given their disastrous reveal.

Agreed.
Unless somebody throws some sort of crazy curve ball, I think it's safe to say that most of us know where the consoles are going to end up in the 8th gen.
I'm actually kind of surprised that the Xbone isn't doing worse than it is right now, but I'm guessing it's getting by on the fact that it's target audience are generally very early adopters and it didn't have an 8 month long drought with no huge titles.
:/

It was 61K in May
140K in June
now around 80K? (calculated) in July

Surprised with Last of Us charting at number 1 within just a few days of being released... kinda wish there was a way to find out how many of those who bought are people who previously had bought it on PS3 and how many are buying it for the first time?

What was MK8 at previously? A bit over 800k or something like that?

Is creating and validating a Neogaf account like 1 week now ?

Trying to understand the suicidal behaviour of some juniors members...
No shit huh. My account took a couple months. Enough to prevent me from acting like a douche bag. At least for awhile.

ND are one of the most efficient AAA developer there is to. They know how to manage budgets without sacrificing quality. I know that TR had more platforms so more cost added but its still amazing that They had a much higher budget then ND had with TLOU but fell short production values wise to them.

There's the M-word. Tretton would roll out talk about "momentum" every month after NPD while Sony was getting trounced by Microsoft. The role reversal this generation is nuts.

Well, i know i go too far comparing it with haze (it was the first big flop that came to my mind) but my point is that titanfall was hyped over the roof and get a really really agressive marketing by MS and EA, and still didnt give the push to the xbox one at the level of hype the media tried to sell to us.

It's a great game, but i think the push to the console proportional to the moneyhat MS payed is not even close.

I do not think we know how much MS spent on Titanfall. Most of its marketing was tied into the console itself, not specifically for the game. The recent Aaron Paul commercials for instance were not about the game so much as the console. Plus we have no idea how many Xbox One Titanfall editions were sold. My guess would be 50% of Ones sold the first 4 months after release, but I am pulling that out of my ass.

Either way, unlike Haze they are working on a sequel. Unlike Haze it sold really well, probably in the top 3 or 4 games this year so far. Unlike Haze it did not destroy the studio. It really is not a flop at any level, much less Haze which was both terrible and a giant bomb.

Sad that they don't show the needed alacrity to accompany the situation they are in. Nor does it seem like they are prepared for the changing market. So maybe desperation is a bad word choice. I just have no confidence in them as a company anymore.

I will enjoy the shit out of their games, and I will buy the ones I want, but I have zero expectations of them being around for very long. Which saddens me. I just haven't seen the response to the situation they are in that should be expected out of them.

The software drop YoY is something I didn't expect and the attach ratio of 3 for the PS4 must also be concerning. I know that there is time to pick it up but it seems like the trend is to for people to buy less games. Add in that most titles for this gen are more expensive, especially compared to last year end of gen, and the number of software units seems to have hit a sharp decline. Last year was a software wasteland, how can this year be worse.

Digital might pick up some of the slack but it still is a troubling trend.

"When combining life-to-date sales of Xbox One and PS4 after nine months, and comparing them to the combined totals of nine months of sales for Xbox 360 and PS3, sales of the newest consoles are larger than the prior generation by close to 80 percent,” said Callahan

Holy shit. Here I thought consoles were in decline and these might the last console generation. This is amazing, really.

heh.

even more reason to stop discounting it as a data point. Like I said, its not perfect, but its the best publicly available information that is based purely on fact, not anecdotes and musings.

Actually, wouldn't you think that would make it a not-so-bad indicator since the XB1 outsold the PS4 in December? Not saying I support using it in any definitive way, but that is an interesting observation about the XB1/PS4 difference.

Definitely. Wasn't the budget for the Uncharted games like $20 million? While the average budget for AAA is over twice that?

I don't think there's any other company that does better with budget on big games except maybe Nintendo.

Holy shit. Here I thought consoles were in decline and these might the last console generation. This is amazing, really.

until you consider that they ignore the biggest selling piece of hardware at the time with that comparison. Not saing console gaming is doomed, just curious why they always ignore that fact, and the fact the 360 and ps3 were very supply constrained at the time
