Erik Kain (Contributor): Sony's Boring PS4 Is Winning The Console War

In what universe is Kinect exciting OR innovative? The voice commands can be done with a simple mic even on the competitor's console (with way less danger of misuse, i.e. in the child example used the big brother can't annoy the little brother by yelling Xbox off when the little brother is not letting him play) and the camera portion of it is as pointless as EyeToy ever was.

Don't worry. You can't help it if people are stupid on the Internet.

"Exciting" gimmicks don't sell systems. Games do. And that's why the PS4 is going to run away with this generation.

So you think games is why PS4 has such a big lead? I think it has more to do with MS' first reveal, better hardware and it was sold at a cheaper price. I'm sure there are people who prefer xbox ones library compared to PS4s.

Don't you just love when fans come rushing into a thread trying to defend somebody and not even realize that it's a positive article?

It's not click bait if he explains that boring isn't a bad thing. It's not his fault people can't be bothered to read something before they have an opinion on it.

So that's warrants 'end of thread'? No. You obviously saw that and dismissed the article without even reading it.

people reading the article will automatically think this is a forbes writer. writers using that type of title really isn't thread worthy.

Ok, so negative title while the article actually, in the end, compliments the PS4. Then half of the Gaffers here didn't even read the article.

Every so often we get these "enhancements" as PR/Suits like to say and what many see as gimmicks. I was around when ROB for NES was on the market and the Super Scope for SNES, they ended up being a fart in the wind.

most of the highly regarded games don't use any gimmicks, from my experience peripherals don't have longevity and more often than not don't improve on a simple button press on a controller when it comes to gameplay.

Personally I think simple, boring hardware with a good library makes a nice change.

You're only able to say that because "gimmicks" that stuck are now called "standards", leaving only failed concepts under the "gimmick" moniker.

The word "gimmick" is just a pejorative for something new that you dislike. We didn't arrive at the PS4 by just focusing on increasing the NES's horsepower every six years.

I think the writer deserves all the shit he's getting for that click-bait title.

Blind fanaticism is the only reasons someone would interpret it as a clickbait title. Just from reading the title, assuming you're aware of the other 2 systems, it should be obvious what the article is about.

Would using "safe" instead of "boring" have prevented this rapidly escalating trainwreck of people bashing an author they don't understand for an article they clearly didn't read?

Maybe not for gaming, but the kinect has HUGE research implications. It's still the best and cheapest depth camera and is used in numerous universities

I think the message of the article is fine, if not front-loaded with a misleading premise; that title is kinda horrendous.

But even then the writer doesn't acknowledge a major reason PS4 got traction with the hardcore audience -- Microsoft's huge PR fuck up and E3 2013.

Opinion pieces are getting weird these days, and it's on purpose because it creates threads like these and huge swells of interest.

Better to be infamous than unknown, in all cases. Would you have read an article headlined "PS4 plays video games great, is cheap" and posted in this soon to be monstrous thread?

Right there with you. My taste falls squarely into MSFT territory, but I won't be buying an xbone because of their fuck ups. I'm split on grabbing a PS4 for MGSV, as I would traditionally, now that it will be available on Steam.

For me, yes. Most multiplats will be better on the PS4 due to the extra power. I tend to care about that. Not everyone does.

So, better multiplats for those who care. Sony studio exclusives for those who care. The price advantage was there at first, and made a difference. More money for games. It all comes down to games.

And this is coming from someone who prefers the Xbone exclusives. I own everything.

And that's fair enough. But for those who don't own everything, there is a tough choice to make. More power and better multiplats or the exclusives you like playing.

it is boring. the third party can be found elsewhere, same with the indies. and the only draw, Sony's first party games, all suck for the exception of TLoU Remastered. i certainty dont see what is so hype inducing about the PS4 and really don't get the 10 million sales. imo both X1 and PS4 really dont have enough compelling software to justify buying them this early on. i feel like most people just like to get caught up in the hype.

It's way, way too early to call a winner; the damn things haven't even been out for a year and are not yet at affordable, consumer-level pricing. They're priced for us hardcore players now. When they hit 299 i think that's when the war starts (and there will be more games by then, too)

New or old , if it doesn't improve the experience already on offer it's a waste of that persons money.

It's true. I've said that from the beginning. I don't think it's a knock on it really, but it has made me invest into my PC instead since if you're just trading on horsepower and price, PC seems like a good alternative (cheaper games, no additional online cost, much better horsepower).

For console-only gamers though it's an obvious choice if you're just looking for a simple standard to go with.

The PS4 exclusives really make going PC only in no way an option for me.

"Writers shouldn't make clickbait titles, and by clickbait titles I mean titles for articles I can't be bothered to read."

I think people here really don't know what a clickbait title is. If you describe the entire thrust of your article in your title, it's not clickbait. Clickbait is making a title that deliberately and obviously obscures something, daring the reader to click to find more. Since the entire article is about how the PS4 is "boring" in comparison to the other two consoles and therefore has an edge, I have no idea how you can argue the title is clickbait.

haha, stuff like this just doesn't get old. I find it funny how for some people it's just mind boggling to see the PS4 succeeding. Like, is it not perhaps possible that what you see as a selling point isn't the case for everyone else? Clearly, most people prefer a straight up gaming console that provides the best experience rather than some useless gimmick. And of course, that totally ignores Sony's ongoing push for VR, which actually has potential to go beyond being just another gimmick .

Better version of multiplats, tons of indies (many available on PC, but you forget not everyone owns a PC, a lot of cool F2P games, great press, great price, strong hardware, and Sony's excellent stable of first party devs along with the great value proposition that is PS+....Add to that MS and Nintendo shooting themselves in the foot, and yea, why ever would it be selling so well, there's like, no reason!

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Good article. Nintendo and Microsoft both messed up this gen. Sony's win is almost by default. They'd have had to go some to not look good after the original, terrible, Xbox One vision.

This gen is kinda like that Mario Party gif where three balls roll off the edge.

That's not how things work here unfortunately and it clearly is the way of the world even at Forbes contributor levels :p

Here's a hint: anything that sounds fishy is probably tongue-in-cheek.

They aren't my posts but I would suggest less tongue and cheek, more on point discussion then.

It's definitely more complicated than I initially stated. COD, Assassin's Creed, FIFA, and Madden are bigger than most of the Sony and Microsoft console exclusive, save Halo. As long as people get those, they'll be happy. If they can get them cheaper and better, even happier.

Lmao

ITT: people who pass judgement on the article without bothering to read it, others who read the article rightfully point out they're nonsensical kneejerk reactions, first group embarrassingly now try misdirect blame onto the "clickbait title"

The entire article is very tongue-in-cheek, the title is actually quite fitting given that.

He's right.

I don't care much for kinect & motion control, but I understand that there's no draw for the crowd that Wii drew in on the PS4.

People doesn't want innecesary gimmicks on their consoles. They just want games. It's not like every new console that comes to the market should reinvent the wheel in order to desserve all the praise and success. Sometimes what is working now and making it just better without going too much further with fancy stuff is enough and that's exactly what Sony did with the PS4 hardware and overall look. But that's why competition exists and I'm glad there's other options on the market to choose from if you're feeling like trying something different/unique like Wii U with it's Gamepad (Off-tv play for the win!) or Xbone with Kinect.

Sure, but it was also a focus on advancing hardware. We all know that Nintendo deems hardware and software development as two sides of the same coin. They worked on the analog stick and Mario 64 for each other, they worked on the Wii Remote and Wii Sports for each other.

An increase in horsepower certainly allows for more creativity, but we can't just disregard a shift in interface as a viable avenue to improve the quality of video games. It's failed on occasion, but has radically transformed the industry for the better on others. I'd rather people keep pushing VR, keep pushing for better voice controls, keep trying to make those crazy looking treadmills work, keep experimenting than sit back and accept that the DS4 is the best game interface device we'll ever get.
