Samurai Champloo 23

Man, I forgot how incredible the baseball episode is. Probably my favorite episode of the entire show. It gets everything right. The episode pacing, the uncanny parody of the Americans, the comedy. This one could even be watched as a stand-alone since it's completely detached from the series.

Noted. Any other Funimation shows you could recommend?

From personal experience:

Fooly Cooly (might be a bit lewd)
Mushi-shi is also available on Funi, might be better resolution than Youtube
Samurai Champloo
School Rumble, first season is lots of fun
Soul Eater
Spice and Wolf
Steins;Gate
The Devil is a Part-Timer
The Slayers (It has 4 seasons, though)

These are only shows that I've seen, don't have much experience with Funi's catalog.

D-Frag ( really hilarious )
Hataraku Maou-sama ( comedy with bits of action)
Code Breaker ( really nice action and visuals)
Black Lagoon ( action and Seinen)
Psycho Pass ( If your into Sci fi detective/cop type of show)
Baccano

Those are from the top of my head.

Fate/Zero I already have on the list via a friend. Wasn't a huge fan of FMA or Brotherhood when it was on YTV and I'm not willing to give it another chance right now.

I do have Crunchyroll pass so Shinsekai Yori is on the list as well

Shinsekai Yori has a couple scenes in episode 8 that could be considered somewhat questionable for somebody who randomly walks in. I don't know, it's not really that bad at all but I'm not sure how conservative these shows need to be.

I thought of a couple more: Time of Eve, Tsuritama, Natsume's Book of Friends, and Gargantia on Crunchyroll, and Baccano! on Funimation. I think Another is also on Crunchyroll, but it's basically a slasher movie in the guise of a horror mystery anime.

I can't theorize about the inner workings of the city-state of idols this time, because most of the episode doesn't take place there. It's just Lala and Nao reconciling after the events of the first episode, which is something I'm surprised is being revisited. The comedy continues to be largely on mark from everybody (even the mascots are hilarious), and it ends up being heartwarming in the end, too. Nao has a way to start her own idol career, should she be able to evade the gaze of the principal.

It's also here that I realize the different standards between TV stations. This takes place at a pool and airs on TV Tokyo, yet Precure on TV Asahi, aimed to the same demographic, almost never has swimsuits in its beach episodes. Different channel standards, different producers, something. A relatively simple episode compared to the rest, and little moments like Mirei slapping Lala with another violation notice underwater or Sofie continuing to remain as she is, unaware of anything. It almost looked like she might drown.

I'm anticipating the moment that Sofie is officially linked with Lala and Mirei so the possibilities can pick up, and yet even in this state, it's one of my favorite shows of the season.

If they wanted to make it a basically just a theatre with people talking I wish they would at least make the stage and curtains slightly less ugly.

There's a bit in Hana where the space is actually a theatre, with a curtain and a spotlight. Shaft's usually not that literal.

Fooly Cooly (might be a bit lewd) Considering
Mushi-shi is also available on Funi, might be better resolution than Youtube Noted
Samurai Champloo Premise doesn't catch my attention so a maybe
School Rumble, first season is lots of fun On list
Soul Eater Is the anime faithful to the manga? If so, on list
Spice and Wolf I should get back on that. I stopped watching it on episode 6 for some reason
Steins;Gate On list
The Devil is a Part-Timer Probably not now
The Slayers (It has 4 seasons, though) avoiding long-running series so this is out.

These are only shows that I've seen, don't have much experience with Funi's catalog.

D-Frag ( really hilarious ) Considering
Hataraku Maou-sama ( comedy with bits of action) Maybe but likely not
Code Breaker ( really nice action and visuals) Watched the first episode a while back wasn't hugely impressed
Black Lagoon ( action and Seinen) Seen it. Have it. Loved it.
Psycho Pass ( If your into Sci fi detective/cop type of show) On list
Baccano Also on list

Those are from the top of my head.

Idol Wrestling 8-12

Every time I put on my headphones to listen watch this, I keep getting this nagging thought in my head telling me "Why are you watching this and not some new hentai instead?".

And then that thought just gets keeps getting louder whenever the match starts and I have to continuously deal with:

- Anime girls moaning on top of each other for a solid 5-10 minutes.

- Hearing the occasional "Nooooooooooo!" as they scream to not give in.

- Have them break out for at least a minute or less (Almost positive its for the VA to catch their breaths)

- Only for them to be put in another hold so that they can start moaning all over again.

And that goes on repeatedly (around 4x) until someone wins the match.

Like I know there's the obvious questions "Why didn't I drop this permanently?" or "Why return?", but I had already managed to get through 7 of those episodes and I really didn't want it remaining in my backlog forever.

Sigh

At least I can positively say that the ending was actually better than a lot of other 12 episode anime.

Mostly because the yuri couple (they totally are) are still together at the end.

Is there any anime on Netflix/Crackle/Crunchyroll you guys can recommend to me? I asked this in the Wisdom teeth thread but i'll ask here for more opinions. My only criteria is that it's not a tit show and the fan service is kept to a minimal so I don't get awkward questions from my family about why that women is half naked, or why that one girl is feeling up her friend in the bath.

Edit: before I forget, for Crunchyroll if i'm on my couch will I be able to properly read the subtitles? Seems like a silly question but just need to make sure.

Double edit: Funimation is also an option as well forgot to mention that.

You liked Higurashi? Maybe try Shinsekai Yori? I think that's on Crunchyroll and it's sort of got a similar horror, answer questions as you go on format.

Fate/Zero and FMA Brotherhood are popular on Netflix. There's also Battle Royale if you're interested in live action.

Edit: And if you have a crunchyroll pass and you can fullscreen it, it should be fine. I'm not sure about watching it in standard quality though.

I'll second Shinsekai Yori/From the New World.

I'd also recommend Uchouten Kazoku (The Eccentric Family)
, Fate/Zero, and Rozen Maiden Zurückspulen.

Mostly no nudity and nothing too perverse. Essentially once we reach Harem levels is where I have to draw the line

Haven't read the Soul Eater manga, so can't help you there.

At what point does she appear? Cause if she appears later than I can continue watching it on my laptop when I feel better.

She shows up in the first episode. I think she has a bath scene in the second, it's been a while.

Fate/Zero 9

Yikes, this just keeps getting more and more insane.

Rider is simply the best.

Oh god.

Powerful episode.

Like i really need to watch romance
Ahhhhh the suffering
I suffered worse than this
ill make it through
I think

You really wanna suffer, watch Diabolik Lovers. Couldn't stomach even 2 episodes of that POS show. Why Sentai is giving that show a dub is beyond me unless their giving it the Ghost Stories treatment.

Fate/Zero 10

Oh great, another anime that takes place in a school...wait, what?

Well, this episode does have a pretty great atmosphere. Almost reminds me of Final Fantasy VII a bit.

So doing some research, Fate/Zero came out after the first Fate/Stay Night. I'm wondering if this episode was meant as fanservice for Rin fans, cause it seems rather tangential to the main story.

It served little purpose other than to make Rin fans happy. What a waste of an episode.

Don't recognize that picture, but the episode brought Pet Semetary to mind for me.

The episode is straight up Wishmaster.

Edit:Actually looking at the release dates, it probably is Pet Semetary as Wishmaster hadn't come out by then. Wishmaster fits it better though.

Alright I've been following Tokyo Ghoul animeGAF, but I can't take it. Somebody please tell me if the concept gets any less stupid or if they eventually do the most sensible thing I can think of and visit a funeral home for their grocery shopping or something.

Giovanni's Island

This Production I.G. film tells the story of two boys on a small island in Japan, at the end of WW II, and depicts what happens when it is occupied by the Soviet Union. It's directed by Mizuho Nishikubo, who has had an extremely long industry presence, if not an especially extensive one. It opens with some rather ugly CGI during the framing device, but once the story proper begins, it's a very aesthetically appealing film. The backgrounds have a lush and roughly-painted, comfortable look to them. Combined with the very three-dimensional camera work, it creates a sort of pop-up book feel at times. The characters are all very stylized and lend themselves well to expressive animation, which the film has plenty of. Nishikubo lends the film a very confident and precise directorial hand, and for the most part understands how to let the visuals speak for themselves, with the dialogue as a complement, not a substitute for meaningful imagery. There are several moments of pure sakuga joy which I would probably count as some of the best individual scenes in anime.

As a story, though, Giovanni's Island is essentially two tales in one. Weaved throughout both are constant allusions and references to Night on the Galactic Railroad and its two protagonists, for whom the two main characters in this story are named. I imagine being more familiar with that book could add something to the experience, but it's not strictly necessary. It's easy enough to understand the meaning of the symbolism in the film itself. In the first story, we see the effects of the Soviet occupation on the island and the people in it. In particular, the growing relationship between protagonist Junpei and the lonely Tanya, the daughter of the Soviet Commander who is living in Junpei's house. This is easily the strongest part of the film, with the interaction between the shy Junpei and the friendly, teasing Tanya painting a very believable and involving portrait of adolescent infatuation, the confusion of hormones heightened by the very difficult situation Junpei, his family, and his village find themselves in. It ends in a believably heartbreaking manner, although that isn't the end of the film.

The second part of the movie deals with
Junpei and his village being relocated to Russian internment camps
, and sadly this part was much weaker than the first. There are a number of strong individual scenes, and the production quality is no less than before, but the contrived and unbelievable, not to mention stupid, actions of the characters in this part left me more angry than sad when the inevitable happened, which I don't feel was the intent. I rather wish they had expanded the first part of the story into a complete film, which would have been very easy to do, and could have provided much stronger overall character arcs. I recognize what they were going for, but it was just more frustrating than effective.

Overall, it's a very beautiful and well-directed film which is a rewrite or two away from being a true timeless classic.

On Crunchy from what I've seen;

Kyousougiga
Fate/Zero
Gurren Lagann
Madoka Magica
Durarara
Gankutsuo

Edit: Argh, GL is heavy on the fanservice so scratch that.

Also Toradora if you want a romcom.

Well Kaneki's "crew" gets their dose of fresh ham from some popular suicide spot which seems like a better idea since they don't have to be worried about anyone reporting a break in.

I said this to someone earlier who was having a problem with the anime. Here is what I said.

Like I said once, the Anime isn't doing any justice to the manga. Rushing, rearranging arcs, and skipping so many important things such as character development. So your just better off reading Tokyo Ghouls manga than watching the anime if you have a problem with it.

The reason why some of the Characters seem one dimensional is because the anime is skipping their character development and even making some seem dumb. Even the MC from the anime is different from the manga. They are depicting him more as a winey naive dumb character which he isn't. Shit they are adapting this as Shonen battle manga which it totally isn't. For example episode 8 the dialogue Kaneki had felt more of what a Shonen protagonist would say with the what am I supposed to do and getting his ass beaten repeatedly. But in the manga it was far more different. The thing about this manga that I like is how it isn't black and white and that both sides have grey areas. Sadly though the anime doesn't depict it well and isn't effective. Basically the anime is butchering the source material.

The manga at it's core is a psychological horror Seinen manga which the anime isn't adapting as. Also I wouldn't go far to say the super sayian power up cliche cause that isn't right. And lastly seeing the MC progression is one of the best things from the manga and atlas that was butchered in the anime.

So really the source material is fuckin great but the anime adaption is mediocre.

I want to watch Giovanni's Island but I'm afraid it will awkwardly decide to make an emotional statement in Boy in the Striped Pajamas Style. Guess I'll add it to my list.
