3D N64/PS1/Saturn games that still look good

Grandia and NiGHTS look pretty ugly. Even as someone that loves it, Saturn 3D is pretty offensive.

Sure, these are emulator shots, but still...

So ugly, so offensive?

I honestly think hardware matters here. (ie. not PS3, not HD TVs)

Couple methods come to mind:

PSOne LCD = 640 x 480 on a 5" screen.

Spyro / Crash look sweet. (Amazing way to play FFIX, too.)

Threads of Fate on PS2 Component into 27" WEGA is awesome, much better than the "bad screen" above. Great blacks, vibrant colors.

RR4 on that same WEGA is sick.

These old 3d games look and play best on CRTs. Even old CRTs. Even 3d.

I played PS1 for years through composite on a 19" 1992 Trinitron (which is actually not a bad way to go, in many ways, vertically flat but curved side to side but no component input.)

Rival Schools and Bloody Roar 2 look so great on component CRT. And at home, you control all the lighting conditions. (CRT's in the dark for the win.)

Easy to forget that arcade cabs often had sucky displays, controls and lighting conditions.

Saturn easily had the largest gap between terrible to great graphics on any 3D system. Some games look like putrid 3do shit covered mess, others easily on par with the best PSX/N64 stuff. I remember finding VF2 in a charity shop on holiday and being absolutely floored when I got it home and booted it up. This was pre-internet for me so I wasn't very well educated on what titles where available. Shit, I mean my Grandmother bought me a Saturn when I was in primary school and desperately wanted a PS1, I didn't even know Sega had a successor to the megadrive at the time and I was very young. Thank god she did now looking back.

Yes I think only Sega's dev teams and a select few 3rd parties knew how to really push the Saturn. Playstation conversations where usually pretty bad, exclusives tended to look better.

VF2 is to this day the most I've been impressed by a graphical upgrade and likely always will be. Everything else has been too incremental for me to care.

Considering the context that started this thread, i.e. some would like indies to make games with low polygon models, I feel emulators shorts are for once acceptable as thats exactly how such games would look if someone made them now.

I'm cheating because it's an arcade game, but

so crazy.

There was a time that arcade boards were the place to look at top tech in the gaming industry. Look at things like the Sega Y board (1988) and compare it with the console and PC games of the time.

I think some of you guys are basing your suggestions on memory. I actually purchased an N64 and played a bunch of PS1 a couple of years ago and got to witness firsthand which games hold up. 3D games with Prerendered backgrounds still look good and in some cases impressive. Cartoony N64 games still look good. Crash and Spyro still look decent. The game that shocked me the most at how it aged was Golden Eye. I literally could not believe what I was looking at. I remembered it so differently. MGS and Tomb Raider have some nice touches but were games I remembered looking much more impressive.

To be fair, Goldeneye was one of the earliest N64 releases, later Retro games for N64 looks much better artistically and technically, Perfect Dark being the finest example.

LOL, why don't you blow it up and put it in a 5:2.145568 aspect ratio too

Did the game really have a widescreen mode?

No, but the Crash games ran internally at 512x240, so any "direct feed" dump without any manipulation will look distorted.

I get that, the shocking thing wasn't how ugly the game looked, but more how different my memory of it was. It's kind of weird how my brain basically created it's own bullshots of the game.

I've never played it myself, but from what I've heard and seen Perfect Dark ran in single digit fps in many situations. That's not impressive imo.

Video games should not be slideshows.

Sega was clearly the best in the industry at that time when it came to pushing 3D. Too bad that was only really the case in the arcade; a Saturn that could've handled this 100% would've cleaned house.

PCs have generally taken over that role now...well, they would if there were games made that required a Titan and nothing less.

PS4 is really beasting w/ hyper 3D atm w/ Uncharted 4 and especially The Order (if we're talking strictly photo-realism).

thread needs some N64 love!
I dare say Resident Evil 2 on the N64 was one of the best ports done. I don't care what the fuck you say about the FMV quality. The fact that they manage to fit it on a cart at that time when video compression technology isn't as good as today's in itself is amazing.

R4 was easily the best looking racer of the generation.

RR Type 4 looked really good. Sadly I had already played the Dreamcast at that time, so it was not as impressive as it should have been.

Had this game been released in 1996... damn that would have been mindblowing.

My votes go to Sega Rally, Ridge Racer HiSpec, and Mario 64 (though the 2D trees didn't impress me even back then).
