Well, depends. A lot of them look fun. Megaman is damn fun, and Bowser Jr. easily is now my second-most hyped newcomer in terms of playstyle. However, I feel it's severely lacking some things. There's only two villains, one of which is an antihero and the other of which is, at best, second-in-command. And, while he does look fun, and he is a great Pokemon, I feel Greninja's a really lacking newcomer. Remove the clones, and everyone else has a gimmick or style that's fully new. In order, Stances/Phases, Namco & Watch, Modok, Fitness moves, Collecting moves, almost entirely uses projectiles, stand character, fully customizable specials, great on ground but bad on air, unknown (Duck hunt dog), fully customizable avatar character, and resource management. I skipped only the clones and Greninja. But that's because I just don't get what Greninja brings. We already have a Ninja, we've had water based characters. He just sticks out to me as being someone who's uniqueness isn't immediately obvious. Plus, I just feel Pokemon has so much more to offer than humanoid-Pokemon, especially when we already have Lucario and Mewtwo. Why not choose a uber or one of the more weird picks? There's certainly ones to choose from, even just counting popular ones. I donno. The rest of the roster is great, especially if we get more villains.

Nice post! Very well thought-out. (BTW, Neiteio, you accidentally left your computer logged into your alt again.)

I feel bad not just for Sakurai but the whole team because they still have newcomer videos coming and all of that work will be wasted.

Alright guys, obviously anything could change, but if this is indeed our final list of newcomers:

How do you feel Smash 4 did with it's newcomer selection? I made this picture so you try and think of the newcomers as a whole, not just the ones leaked.

Me personally? A few missed opportunities aside, fucking stoked. 15 new fighters is nothing to scoff regardless of clones, and you could even bump that number to 17 if you count the Mii Fighter as 3 different characters.

I hate Lucina, Robin, and Dark Pit. I dislike Villager, Shulk (Xenoblade is great, but Shulk was terrible), and the Miis. The rest range from OK to great (Barring DHD since we don't have any footage of him)

Overall I'm not very happy with the roster since this is the first Smash where I can honestly say I hate a newcomer that isn't a clone.

I wish I knew why Sakurai seems to hate Metroid and DK.

So apparently the leaker is in Brazil due to the monitor being a Brazilian brand, all I can say is

The Nintendo Ninjas are already at his house.

Was going for the texture edit look rather than adding extra polygons.

It probably will have iggy's glasses and morton's sunglasses on it, it's not as if extra polygon alt colours are new considering Pikachu and Jiggly (and obviously Bowser Jr. now haha).

Yeah, Sakurai's probably pissed, but I'm sure he was prepared for this. He must know by this point that you can't keep any secrets for long, especially not with a high-profile game like this. The best thing for him to do, I think, is just ignore it: post the PotDs and reveal characters like normal, without showing any signs of ruffled feathers. Sometimes, refusing to give any attention or show any signs of anger is the best way to neutralize something like this. He can't stop the leak from happening, but perhaps he can weaken it by not giving people anything more to talk about on the subject.

8 new series are being repped with a playable characters. That's amazing if you ask me. Just goes to show how deep Nintendo's libray is. Also love the mix of classic and newer characters.

Kid Icarus Uprising is also one of my favorite games of all time, so seeing two new reps along with a revamped Pit means I just can't hate it no matter what.

I'm pretty surprised that Mother 1 seems to be getting a fair bit of representation, with (probably) a 3DS stage based upon it, and the Devil Car as a Smash Run enemy.

Post exists on the website, translation is accurate. I feel bad for Sakurai. It's one thing to have a retail copy get out a little earlier than scheduled, but it's another thing entirely for a member of an organization bound by an NDA to leak this kind of info. As a fan, I appreciate getting these pics and videos, but I do feel bad for Sakurai as an individual to have his baby get leaked like this.
Especially considering how much it seems like he enjoys the marketing (or rather the revealing of info a little at a time).

I'm sure he was expecting it though. Maybe not quite this soon. But it isn't the world's end.

Dark Pit is a bafflingly terrible choice. The lack of Ridley would be equally bizarre. Aside from that it's a pretty good batch.

One good argument against leaks is a normal reveal schedule keeps people from going "GUH I HATE THIS CHARACTER KNOWING NOTHING ABOUT HOW THEY PLAY SAKURAI HOW COULD YOU"

I mean

Not everyone

But more people

I'm assuming as the ESRB requires all content, even locked content to be fully disclosed.

They can't possibly send a video with footage of EVERY SINGLE thing in the game, ESRB doesn't have time for that either.

They really only send things that they know/think may affect the rating.

Ice climbers and lucas, for example, would not affect the rating.

Not saying it proves anything, but it doesn't disprove anything either.

Every time I want to say something about the roster, my mind wanders back to Dark Pit and Dr Mario. They're the sort of choices that make me just go "Why." Even if clones don't take much effort, I'd much rather see that effort go into preserving roster classics like Ice Climbers.

I feel it's pretty naive to think, if Ice Climbers have been cut, the sole reason would be a lack of effort.

I'd be more worried about "ESRB0083". How many people do they need to judge a single game? It's either a small team of people or a single person, I don't think he's going to be hard to track at all.

I see those as "not enough time to add another characters, here to quickly fill the remaining slot so the CSS looks good"
Not applying to Lucina as she was requested, more than Chrom in Japan.

Dr. Mario represents an NES game / series that was more popular than Ice Climbers.

But it's not as if they thought "Hmm, we could add a completely unique character that would take a long time to implement and debug due to how different it is to other characters, or we could add a clone of Mario".

There wasn't a choice between a clone and a unique character, they're not the same proposition.

I'm really happy with the newcomers we do have (save maybe Dark Pit), but a little disappointed in the lack of several veterans.

I can't believe so many people are upset about the Ice Climbers. I always thought they were terrible and a waste of a slot, most people don't even remember Ice Climber on the NES.

I've been to lots of Smash parties and everyone collectively poops on the Ice Climbers. I'm just really surprised there are so many super fans out there, people claiming they have no reason to play the game if there are no Ice Climbers.

They were one of the most unique characters in the game.

Them possibly being cut from the game for both versions because of the 3DS is a legitimate reason to be upset especially if they are a person's main character. It's pretty obvious for all to see now that the 3DS version did impose limitations on the game in some fairly serious ways despite what some said early on, first with Olimar's decreased Pikmin count and now the possibility of the Ice Climbers being removed completely.

Also just because the smash parties you go to dislike the Ice Climbers is justification for them being cut?, if anything it sounds like no one in those smash parties can use the Ice Climbers well to begin with.

eww I didn't even notice Dark Pit. lol Ok other than that I satisfied with the roster. There are a lot of new interesting characters to try. Mac, Greninja, Palutena, Lucina, etc.

Thanks!

Yeah, Dark Pit just reminds me how dumb it was to make Cole and Evil Cole.

I largely disagree. Dark Pit is his own character in the series. He also plays really similar to Pit, and thus is an easy clone to make. His appearance is cool for people who like Uprising, and is relatively a low-effort thing for the dev team to do.

Evil Cole is not a clone. He was not as easy to make. He also isn't his own character. He's actually the same dude, just making different choices. In fact, inFamous's big draw is that choice-based gameplay. Why not incorporate that into the moveset? Why not start with weak Fire/Ice moves, and as you use more of one or the other, they get stronger? That'd be a great way to incorporate a feature from his series into his character and to make him standout from the rest of the cast. But instead they went the lazy route and just split them up.
