Other responsibilities and some PS4 games are eating up my time at the moment. We are in dire need of more people talking to us in here! If you read this, come in and share some impressions, we are eager to read and talk about everything :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
1. Eidolon - $15.00 (PC)
sKsZOCu.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/286140/
Eidolon is a game about exploring a mysterious landscape and uncovering the stories of the people who lived there once before. It is a game about history, curiosity, interconnectedness, and the slow and inevitable beauty of life.
1. Claire - $9.99 (PC)
TD3NT59.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/252830/
Aided by her dog and armed only with a flashlight, Claire must conquer her fear and find her comatose mother. However, there are others lost in the darkness seeking salvation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Lexicopolis - Free (PC)
23821.jpg

http://gamejolt.com/games/puzzle/lexicopolis-a-b-city/14954/

This is easily the biggest surprise I've played last month. The game is basically testing your inventiveness in coming up with town buildings, which you need to collect letters for by placing said buildings and the placement, rarity of the letters and position of the buildings itself, governs the amount of points each building gives you, accumulating into an overall value score of your city. Incredibly fun to play around with and a very engaging, yet simple scoring system. I really wish this was a fully fleshed out game.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Freedom Planet - Free Demo/$14.99 (PC)
MhiAMOu.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/248310/
http://freedomplanet.galaxytrail.com/
This is basically the best Sonic clone game I ever played. I dont mean to use "clone" as a negative here, but it really is the same base mechanics. However, they work quite well too, great sense of speed, interesting level design, boss encounters, decent variety of enemies and challenges. If you like Sonic and you wont vall it a sacrilege for someone to copy the formula, you dont get around this one
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Glitch Dungeon - Free (Browser)
SLgcmrC.jpg

http://gamejolt.com/games/platformer/glitch-dungeon/28844/

Cute little puzzle game which will have you learn several glitch powers, which are needed to progress through to the end. I sort of felt they didnt do enough with the theme on a mechanic level and there really could have been a more intriguing setup (full fleshed out metroidvania anyone?), but I definitely enjoyed playing through it just now and overcoming the obstacles here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Cubic Roll - Free (PC)
screenshot4.png
http://www.desura.com/games/cubic-roll/
Mechanically very simple, but incredibly challenging action/reaction based highscore game. The mechanics of changing the sides with the arrow keys works fine, and if you are into these small highscore games that get deviously fast, you'll like this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

7.-18.
Lovely Planet
DYNETZZLE
Only If
Unturned
The Nightmare Cooperative
We are doomed
Wings of Saint Nazaire
Pivvot
Shwip
ShadowCrypt
Proxy Blade Zero
Snayke

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

Posts are now filled with with Info and a huge round of applause to More_Badass who probably was responsible for posting 70% of this threads content while being absent for a few weeks. :p

Tbh guys, without Toma Bot or Baddy, these threads might not even exist anymore, considering he is giving it content and my program is the only reason this thread doesnt take 6-7 hours to create. Really cool luxury to still have them though, lets hope we can continue them for a good while longer :)

Also, I just remember Eidolon while preparing the votes for this thread, what was Baddys take on it? You didnt really post much impressions about it, didnt you?

Edit: This also marks my 100th subscribed thread, most of which should be my own. Funny how time goes by.

Anyone recommends Infinity Wars? I've played a bit of MMDoC, how does it compare? Is it necessary to spend real money to open packs or can you earn enough in-game money while playing?

The stuff that is currently in the OP has likely not been played by anyone here yet, since thats basically our "task" for the month. If no one else takes care of it, I will definitely take a look at it during the month, but if you find some time, I'd ne more than happy to read your impressions about it :)

If you dont find the time, you can check back in a few days and I might have posted some impressions myself.

And thanks for kind words, Toma. Happy to keep these threads going. I will admit though, that the game posts from people seemed to have diminished in the last few threads. It's definitely noticeable to me since the majority of the games in the OP are from my posts. Now granted, I do the Screenshot Saturday posts, but there seemed to be a lot more discussion in these threads before. A few times last month, there would be 10, 15 hours or more without any posts.

I barely played any Eidolon so I can't really give any honest opinions at the moment.

Oh wow, this thread is amazing.

Any reason why Velocity 2X was not included in the list?

This thread is very PC centric due to space constraints (and to keep the community talk going). All other platforms have their own, very dedicated userbase, but there is no other thread giving exposure to the smaller PC stuff, so we do that here in the OP.

We still talk about other Indies in here from time to time though, PS or iOS usually.

hmm, bummer. I think they deserve the attention, and it's not like the number of non-PC Indie games every month ever goes beyond one or two.

But I suppose it's already very large as it is! So I appreciate being able to find some interesting things that would otherwise get lost in the shuffle, so it's understandable. Don't get me wrong, I love what I'm seeing here and the gifs are very much appreciated as well. I'm surprised at just how many games I want to try just from a cursory browse, nevermind once I start really getting into it.

Yeah, I understand that, but considering other platforms do have some exposure, I rather focus on the stuff here that no one else mentions. Velocity2X probably gets a million mentions in the Playstation thread for example since the first game also was a VitaGAF favourite (deservedly so, fantastic game). Even then, you are still right with how there are also smaller Indies on PSN that are frequently and undeservedly overlooked, but compared to the Indie Game on PC, the PSN releases are still rather clearly arranged if you decide to dig through it. PC Indies not so much, I bet 99,9% of GAF users havent heard about most of the games in these threads (same for us until we listed them here), so we sort of venture into completely unknown territory here more often than not ;)

Oh and welcome here :) Since we are doing these threads since last march, there is probably a few dozens of really, really great games we covered since then that you might have missed. The older threads are linked at the top, but for a general overview on the best stuff, I highly recommend going through the older threads and checking out the voting section each month at least (5-6 games per month usually) and the Indie GOTY thread 2013: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=766928

We'd love to read some others in here more often, if you have some impressions to share or want to discuss Game design or just Indie Games in general, feel free to hop in here :)

Corrected, and yup, probably would actually make sense if we could come up with sharing the work load somewhat. Like me doing Desura grabs, you doing Indie devlogs, someone else doing steam releases and so on. But in the end, as long as we can still fill the thread each month, I am fine with how its going generally.

If anyone wants to lend us a hand on a consistent basis for this thread, say 1-2 hours every month, let me know and I'll find something to do.

And on the topic of Eidolon: The game is EXTREMELY time intensive. You can easily walk around for 40 minutes and not do anything. I admire the general design philosophy a lot, but its definitely not a game someone can judge within a quick 30 minute glance (which I like to do for most games in these threads). Eidolon sucked away 8 hours of my time before I felt confident enough to form an opinion. Fantastic experience, even despite its flaws.

I like it that some iOS games are showing up in these threads. Games like 80 days, I feel, earned those spots.

Yeah, we made an exception for really outstanding iOS/Android games that some members here (usually Baddy) feel strongly about. Gotta admit though that some others didnt make the cut in some of the more crowded months in which I had to cut down the list from like 80 entries to 50.

I like it that some iOS games are showing up in these threads. Games like 80 days, I feel, earned those spots.
Well I only tend to post here about the IOS games that really transcend the platform. There are lot of games that are good mobile games, but then there are the rare few that are not just good games for IOS or Android, but just good games in general regardless of platform. Stuff like 80 Days, Sorcery, Monument Valley, Year Walk, Device 6, and I'd also say Penumbear and Incoboto.

I played axiom verge at pax and its the real deal. Controls were tight, graphics have a nice twist besides being nice pixel art, and it had a high level of polish. Super hyped for that.

I also played videoball, which is a really fun 4 player arena game. I'll post some off screen footage in a couple days when I get home. The dev said he had over 100 prototypes and the polish is incredible. I loved the game and can't wait for its release, which will be soonish. It's super easy to learn but has a lot of depth.

ACE Arena: Cyber Evolution is on steam early access and is free to play. This was another really fun arena/soccer/moba mash up. The game is actually free and purchases are all cosmetic/fund development. Lots of potential.

Titan souls was not impressive. The games main (and only) mechanic was too shallow and needs lots of iteration. Graphics are OK but nothing special. It has potwntial, but it needs a lot of work.

There were also a ton of indie games destined for the bundle bargain bin. I feel bad but too many devs are not taking a critical look at what they have before devoting resources to bad ideas. I played lots of indies that were near completion/release that either need lots of work or are just plain boring.

I'll give my take on why game impression posts have dwindled. Quite a few indie games now get their own threads, so people post there instead while previously they'd pile up here. This has increased since Steam Early Access where the game gets some boost and its own thread that can have people asking whether it's worth buying into or waiting. There are also more indies releasing on consoles, so like for me the attention is divided. If I was going to post here properly, I'd have to focus on PC indie games exclusively in a month because there are so many or if the game I'm playing doesn't have its own thread.

I can see that, but tbh, most of the games worth talking about didnt get their own threads. Eidolon? Echo of the Wilds? Claire? Chronology? Pocket Robots Test Chamber? Thats just the vote results from the past 2 months, all great games. I somehow think time is more likely the issue. I am currently stuck on Diablo 3 and Golf Club, so I didnt push through some more Indies at the end of last month. I assume its sort of similar for the others since the time spent on possibly finding great games could just be spent on playing games each person knows he will like.

Every month, we venture into completely uncharted territory, playing games that barely anyone else has played here and not rarely with unsatisfying results. Considering we'd still have about a 60-70% rate of decent games with 10-15% great ones each month, we still have an awesome quota, but I can totally see how the ones that are interested in posting these impressions here also might be interested in playing other stuff once in a while :p

Would be less of an issue if we had more regulars in here so we rotate in and out frequently, but I dont quite see how there is anything to be done about that, other than getting new interested "fresh" people on board. I mean Baddy was also new to this thread series once and he is probably the most active poster here now.

So come on all you lurkers, post some damn impressions :p

Just a reminder that Toma should play Terrorhedron

Much appreciated. :)

I am really kind of surprised how much negative impressions Titan Souls is getting. I didnt play it, so I cant judge it myself, but I am inclined to believe you guys of course. Bummer.

Looking forward to the videoball footage!

Oh and your post just reminded me that I put a sticker on my notebook with a very interesting strategy game that I played during Gamescom and wanted to post in here as well. I think putting that sticker on the outside didnt have quite the intended effect since I rarely see that side of my notebook and I forgot. Will need to do that this month.

I played MMDoC for a long time, and a couple of months ago I tried Infinity Wars for a couple of weeks.

What I liked:
- the commander system is a well-thought-out way of implementing multi-colored decks
- variety of game modes, including ladder, draft, and merged deck
- can trade and forge cards
- multiple win conditions (health vs morale)

What I didn't like:
- turns take place simultaneously, so a big part of the strategy involves anticipating what your opponent will do based on your knowledge of his type of deck. My friend described this as feeling a bit like poker. Personally, I did not find this fun.
- the community seems even smaller than the MMDoC community
- MMDoC felt like it had more strategic depth (but I only played IW for a couple of weeks, so take this with a grain of salt)
- there is something about the gameplay that feels bland. I think it is because a lot of the beginner strategies revolve around summoning a bunch of similar-feeling creatures to the battlefield.

I'm sure a lot has changed since I played, and it's free, so I'd recommend checking it out if you're interested.

That sounds pretty interesting actually, thanks for the impressions.

The monthly Indie Games threads are must-subs as far as I'm concerned, even if I (and others like me) might not find much opportunity to pile through the selections and honorary mentions.

Anyway, I seem to remember that Cities In Motion 2 was well thought of when it hit the shores of this thread series early last year. Seeing the trailer for Cities: Skylines after Gamescom reminded me that someone here might appreciate having a run at CiM2.

So here, a Humble Bundle extra for thread regulars and lurkers alike, if anyone's interested. Send a PM to ModBot with "Cities in Motion 2 -- MB-D80C3358085C8E34 - Taken by Krystof Koreni. 1 entrants total." (no quotes) as the message content to enter.

I am giving away a Steam key. To enter this giveaway, send a PM to ModBot with any subject line. In the body, copy and paste the entire line from the message below containing the game you want to enter for. Confused? Watch this GIF tutorial or ask for help.

- I really appreciate thank you messages, but please send them to me (Krystof Koreni, not ModBot!) via PM instead of in thread.

Aw, very nice giveaway. I really liked that game. If someone snatches it, make sure to leave some impressions ;)

Guys. Lethal League is so good. So good.

It's simple. You smack a ball into someones face. Great. But the game is so much deeper. LL has meter management, special moves, bunts, parries, stealing, mind games, pure fuckery and probably a ton more.

It's probably amazing in local play, but online is pretty damn solid! It uses GGPO (Skullgirls, Divekick) for netcode, so it feels incredibly tight. There are 1v1, 1v1v1v1, 2v2, and other variations (point/stock).

It's highly recommended to those who enjoy competitive party games. It's up there at the top with SpeedRunners for indie multiplayer greatness.

Wow, I'm so surprised I've never heard of Dex and Whispering Willows. Those games look soooo good.

Thanks for the detailed impressions! I'll check it out as it seems different enough from other card games

Seeing Whispering Willows in motion surprised me a lot as well in my monthly Desura crawl. Hopefully, it plays as nicely as it looks.

Yeah, stopped posting impressions due to time constraints, i.e. it usually took me a whole evening just to play the free stuff from the OP. Add to that the time needed to write up semi-thoughtful impressions, maybe illustrate a few games with a gif or two.

That's not even counting the bigger indie releases of which there have been plenty the last few months. I definitely try and keep up with releases but a) playing enough to form an informed opinion (since I do feel obliged to spend more time with the bigger releases then I would with the free stuff I touched on above) and b) writing up a post for the thread has been impossible for me, lately. Usually a) is where I already fail, just too much non-indie stuff I also want to check out.

Oh, and then there's, like.. life. Can't neglect that. :p

Haha, perfectly understandable.

...except.. what is that life thing you speak of?

Wow, I hope Drift Stage is as good as it looks because at the moment aesthetically it looks amazing. Thanks for making me aware of that.

Ooooh, now I understand what you were saying.

I recently bought and finished Danganronpa after the sale. Cool little game.

Nah, I'm just being silly (like usual). Actually, life is kinda getting in the way of me digging into my Vita proper which is kinda ironic.. maybe? Anyway, yeah, DR seems cool from what I played of it so far.

Also have quite a slew of indie games on it already (PS+ & my own purchases), but ok, don't wanna fill the thread with Vita stuff. :p

Anyone playing Hexcells Infinite? It came out the other day, and I'm hooked. It's the third in the series and it features a random puzzle generator. Pretty cool.

Oh I've never done this before. Lets try it.

Hexcells Infinite - $4.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)

For those who don't know about Hexcells, it's a logic puzzle game similar to Minesweeper. The main difference here is that it doesn't suck, as there's no guessing needed ever. This game gives you the tools, you just need to take the time to figure it out. Infinite features a random puzzle generator, giving you the ability to play (and share!) a brand new puzzle every single time.

I hope I did that right :)

Clandestine looks crazy cool. Im not affiliated with the project in any way but I have been in contact with them via email and put a couple of posts up for their trailers on my little site.

An asymmetrical co-op spy thriller unlike most games where both co-op partners are with each other, one is basically in the van doing all the hacking and helping the other person through the level and achieve the objective

Its due this year I believe on PC/Steam, definitely worth a look to me

Yup, looks perfect. Didnt even realize there was a third in the series already.

Looking forward to the videoball footage!

Here you go:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJMLrZUxAmc

Basic premise is to push the 3 blue blocks into the other teams goal.

Really fun game called Videoball was at Pax Prime 2014. I grabbed this clip as the developer's friend narrated.

This maps is the basic map, and the game will include other maps.

The general gameplay is that you have a ship (the triangles) trying to push the blue balls (up to 3 at a time) into the other team's goal.

Each player has a base attack and 3 levels of charge:
base: shoot a small bullet
charge 1: shoot a medium bullet
charge 2: shoot a large bullet
charge 3: build a wall

The different shots interact in different ways, so there's a lot of strategy as to which one to pick.

Hitting another player with a shot, including your teammate, will bump them and pause the game briefly, allowing everyone a chance to refocus.

I found a decent strategy was to spam the base shot against the enemy while my teammate did level 2 shots to push the balls down court.

Anyway, game should be out sometime soon and is day 1 for me. Pretty sure it is local coop only.

This looks pretty fun, too bad I can only play these games on console, similar to Towerfall and most of these games never make the jump.

Hexcells is a fantastic game. The puzzles are so well designed, and the presentation is so soothing you never feel irritated by lack of progress. Currently on 5-1 of Infinite and it took me hours just to get past the first couple of moves. So good when it clicked :)
