Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Actually, it's worse: it's a big fat lie from one of the worse attention whores I've ever seen on the internet. So yeah...

By the way, Nintendo just confirmed the N3DS WILL be region-locked.
Source? I believe you 100 percent, I'm just asking for good measure.

Just goes to show you: people that act as Nintendo die-hards yet pose in pics with bootleg Luigis aren't gonna be credible in most cases.

so only the N3DS screen is larger? not the N3DS LL?

Ah, sorry. There's a thread on the front page (sixteen-bit posted the link), thought everyone had seen it already.

Anyway, no big surprise for me, and as I've already said, I'm 100% digital so it probably doesn't matter. Still not giving hope for the next handheld... like every time... *sigh*

Still speculation.

@ that fake list: Super Mario Sunshine 3D wouldn't be too bad with 1st person gyro water shooting. But remember: There's already a 2D and 3D Mario on the 3DS. Nintendo never does more than one of each per generation usually. With the improved 3D Effect on the n3DS, however, I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a Super Mario 3D Land 2.

I'd love a Super Luigi 3D Land

Why do companies (Sony and Nintendo) release handhelds in the late winter or spring? Always seemed like a missed opportunity to make holiday sales and an uphill climb in momentum the following year.

I think they want them released right before the fiscal year ends?

Everyday I get a bit more curious about the new 3D Effect. Especially since there are some reports that it apparently really improves the experience. I'm surprised Nintendo went that route, because I was expecting even less focus on 3D in future 3DS revisions, not more. I thought the 2DS was a strong indicator for that.

This attitude is really cool I think. Instead of doing damage control (because, let's face it, the 3D Effect didn't catch on as expected), Nintendo is doing an offensive. It seems like they really want to make this feature work. They want to prove that it works. They want to show people.

Pretty big contrast to let's say Mircrosoft, who, when they experienced resistence to Kinect 2, immediately dropped it.

I hope TGS hand-ons from the folks trying MH4G out will tell us more.

Correct. I really don't think the 3DS XL screen would fair well at a larger size. The PPI is already pushing the limits of modern acceptability IMO.

Point of view, 720p display is more than enough on a 5/6/7" device but most of the high end smarphone in 1080p are already moving to 1440p. 2/3 years in 720p, 2 in 1080p, how many between 1440p and 4k >.>
I got the idea, sure, but the bigger the screen, the higher it cost, and I don't want a PSVita alike handset from Nintendo, I already have a Wii U (half part of myself is joking).

It seems like I'm one of the few people (if not the only one) who doesn't like the Famicon colored buttons on the n3DS, definitely getting the n3DS XL next year when it drops.

nah i'd prefer the black buttons too

still getting that n3DS tho

Really wish they made the n3DS a flat 4.00 screen size. Would have been the perfect midway point between the XL and OG 3DS. 3.88 still feels too small for me after playing on the XL for so long. But i'll reserve judgement till I can get my hands on both of them and compare for myself.

Wonder if there are some slight improvements to the touch screen so it is a bit more finger friendly, maybe to get it at least to Wii U standards. Since it seems that out of all the NIntendo devices with touch screens (DS, 3DS, Wii U) is the most responsive.

Also the dinamic backlit feature seems to be doing quite a lot for the battery life, asuming Nintendo is including bats of the same capacity.

I'm interested but I'm not sold immediately. I just need a couple game announcements or really really slick features.

We've seen all of the features it's really god. I wouldn't expect major game announcements because Nintendo isn't going to split it's playerbase when they are already struggling.

I do expect (hope) we'll see new VC announcements (SNES/GBA) since the additional power will easily allow for it.

The saddest thing in all of this is that I'll have to give up my Purple Rain 3DS. Damn I love the color and luster it has 😢

I need purple rain faceplates now damnit.

Why do you have to give up your purple 3ds?

You can keep them both, and multiple consoles brings pokemon to its full potential.

It shouldn't when the 2ds doesn't exist in Japan.

Wow Nintendo and Capcom really are pumping up the new 3DS release with MH4G. Wonder what will Nintendo will use to sell New 3DS in west, since neither MH or Xenoblade are popular series in the rest of the world. I say they should moneyhat some western exclusives. A Call of Duty can show the capabilities of additional buttons. Or a GTA, 3DS is the only Nintendo handheld without a GTA title for now.

Maybe a decent marketing push and a price reduced line up of greatest hit games. If the 3D effect is indeed improved it could turn some heads around. It is a shame they'll miss out the 2014 hollyday season.

I think that besides being a stopgap to the 3DS line, the New 3DS will be a test to the NintendOS thing, everything is in place: the same architecture, additional horsepower and control inputs, enhanced and exclusive games, they are probably using it to prepare thirds parties and their own studios to this kind development, find problems and difficulties and (hopefully) input from the thirds to help perfect this system.

Its still missing the clickable sticks, so not fullly 1:1 control input. But defintely closer.

Seeing Super Famicom edition and the addition of the c-stick got me inspired to mock up a Gamecube version for the west. Thought I'd share here.

Again this is just an artist mock-up and not an actual product.

Took a break from GAF for a week and this is what I miss? Damn!

This is exactly what Nintendo needed to keep the 3DS going until 2016 when a true successor is launched. I like the additions overall, but one thing I can't help but notice is how the bottom screen still is not flush with the surface. Will this have the same self-scratching problem as previous models?

That is awesome. Best alt mockup I have seen yet.

I would definitely buy it, almost got a purple 3DS but ended with the blue XL instead.

Good effort Vids.

Purple is the type of color that Nintendo should get away from to use in their devices, i get to some the feelings of nostalgia it evokes might make it attractive. But most of the devices Nintendo makes don't look exactly like high end piece of electronics (to put it bluntly they look cheap) and to coat them in a playfull purple color does not make things easy for market performance.

Not a fan of the famicon coded buttons either since it seems at odds with the rest of the system. The removeable covers would have been more than enough for the personalized color customizations. That way the user could get as wild as they want withouth tarnishing the image of the device in anyway.

Actually, I meant that the differences of development between the old and the new 3DS will be used as a experience for the future development for the new unified architecture.

Very funny video. I loled at "2011, you announce the 3DS, okay, 2012 the 3DS XL, 2013 the 2DS, and now 2014.... No wonder you call it the 3DS, you have to buy three of the fucking things!"

Ahaha.

He's not wrong. If I pick up the New 3DS XL, as I'm currently planning on doing, I'll have purchased my third one.

However, it's not completely by choice. I had to sell my original black 3DS because I was super low on money and had no other options.

I wish the XL had the faceplates. :(

It will be the third one for me as well (I already have my *new* 3DS LL preordered). I just sell off the previous one after a system transfer, and it pays for most of the new one, so it is really not a big deal at all. For example, my white 3DS LL was about $200 (I bought it in Japan, so no import fees/markup), but I sold my white Japanese 3DS for $185 soon after.

GBA games on VC, (and a darn good lineup to start with) would push me over.

Looks great, if only it wasn't an XL.

Bottom screen on the n3DS is also finally bigger than the screen size on the DSi. Didn't like that the bottom screen shrunk going from DSi to 3DS, so it's nice to see it going back higher again on the regular 3DS model.

Would anyone be so kind as to calculate the dimensions of a 1:1 GB/C VC titles on New Nintendo 3DS? tired of Micro-sized GB games. Would this be actually closer to GBC size?
