DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

Looks like marathon Destiny play is finally starting to take its toll on the left stick of my launch system. Just a little divot that's barely noticeable when playing, but I assume it's the beginning of the end.

Good to know. Where did you buy them?

It took me about 8 months and 10 games before a tiny tear appeared on the left stick. It hasn't yet worsened, but I guess it's only a matter of time.

I got mine from ebay.

As an aside, what other thumbsticks could I put in? Are there any third party mimics?

I've seen these on amazon, don't know if they're any good though, they might wear off just like the original ones.

. . . the Xbox sticks look too high and small for me so I wouldn't want to put those in . . .
I took an unofficial measurement of the ones I put into both of my DS4s. It's barely 1mm taller and 1mm smaller in diameter. It's really very difficult to notice those extremely slight differences when using and, with the greater passive grip thanks to its texture and top-shape, it simply adds a level of control that is hard not to. People talk as if it is looser, but I find that observation more imagined than material for my sticks, anyway.

That was the exact moment when I realized that my DS4 was screwed. I wonder if Sony/ amazon are still doing refunds on launch units...my guess is probably not. :/

Has anyone had any luck getting Amazon to replace them instead of a) paying and b) waiting for Sony to deal with it?

Hi everyone!

I wanted to do a proper tutorial time ago, but I couldn't because I don't have too much time lately...
Like some of you will have noticed, the DS4 battery is not as good as it could be. It takes near 7 hours to be fully discharged while the DS3 ones lasts at least the double.
So I started searching for a 2000mAh battery. I found a lot on ebay for less than 7€ and I thought that once opened I should give a try to the Xbone sticks, so I bought a pair for less than 2€ (in ebay too).
My DS4 sticks are perfectly, but I wanted to see which feels better.

First of all, sorry for the photo quality. I hadn't have time to build a photo studio while I was dismantling the pad.

1) There we have the new battery (2000 mAh) and the sticks

2) A comparison of the new sticks with DS3 and DS4 sticks. I really don't know what happen this gen that both (Sony and MS) have reduced the size of the sticks. I like bigger ones

3) First: to separe the two sides.

Keep the screws near. It's easy to lose them

4) Here we have a comparison of both batteries. Same size, double capacity.

5) Take care with this little motherfucker. Is easy to remove, but is even easier to forget and give it a pull...

The two pieces separately:

6) Changing the sticks is pretty simple: You only have to pull from the bottom and put the new stick, pushing like when you press R3/L3 buttons

7) Finally, put together everything, including the new battery

8) Final result:

Conclusions:
- Sticks are good. Is easy to notice the difference in materials. The xbox one sticks are made with better plastic and the grip is better too. Nevertheless I like the size and the height of the DS4 sticks.
I wouldn't say that one is better than the other. Is matter of preferences: For me, if you haven't any problems with the rubber, I think DS4 sticks are more comfortable.
- The battery change is fantastic. Couldn't say more...

I took the sticks out of my xbox one controller and when I put them in my ds4 I noticed they don't fit as I was expecting. After I game for a bit the won't be pointing exactly up anymore and I have to put them back in place.

It's not very noticeable so either I am way too critical or my xbox sticks are off in size.

Sony won't. I am not sure where some of you are based, but I sent my controller back to Sony for free; I'm from the UK.

They gave me no such idea when I called them from the US. I went with Amazon whom I bought it from and they took care of it no problem. Did take a while to get back, though.

oh yeah, Amazon will be fine.

More challenging question: Has anyone had any luck getting GAME to replace them over the counter rather than having to post them off to Sony?

Having used both the Xbone and PS4 controllers, I felt that Microsoft's hardware (in this aspect) was a generation ahead; the sticks are far superior in my opinion.

A pal of mine has taken his to Game two or three times and they've swapped it over the counter. Didn't even check the receipt.

Maybe in the material, the xb1 controller in my eyes is terrible compared to the 360 controller. The loose sticks are just like ps3 controller

That's interesting. Perhaps it's just an illusion of the slightly different profile. Still, I am happy with the sticks apart from the disintegration so I don't think I'll change type

Amazon 3rd Party Vendor "GameSeek" sells them for like $5 shipped!
Take a bit of time though as they ship from the UK, so I'd say order a pair.

Seriously, the things are fucking amazing and I CANNOT got back to the default DS4 sticks.

Have sony adressed this issue with the new PS4 consoles?

It would be very sad if they havent as it is obviously a manufacturing problem. I will keep returning mine as soon as they break, which should not take more than a couple of weeks of playing. on my 4th controller now, all have failed :(

My sticks are still fine (launch system, several hundred hours played) but I just don't like the texture on them. So I copped these - www.amazon.com/Grip--Analog-Stick-Covers-PlayStation-4/dp/B003NSLGW2/ and sort of got them because my cousin's sticks had actually worn completely off.

I don't like'em really. I still have them on, but I'll take them off when a competitive game comes out that I want to play. They feel a bit mushy and sometimes the sides of the covers will hit against the controller if you push the sticks all the way to one side.

I bought those specifically because someone in this thread mentioned them (or maybe it was the replacement stick thread) and they were cheap with prime shipping.

yep 4 controllers, the first one went after 3 weeks of use, the second one took 4 weeks, the third one 4 weeks, the fifth one is about to show first signs of the worn out rubber.

one of the controllers have a broken R2 trigger....

Sorry to hear that, then. I got a new replacement controller from Sony in less than two weeks, and I didn't have to pay anything.

If you read through this very thread and others like it, you'll see that many others were given no choice but to pay shipping for their warrantied controller replacement. Suppose that's a benefit to EU consumer protections.

Mine were peeling, bought two sets of analog stick covers from Amazon for $4, they have nice grips and everything. Problem solved.

EDIT: In case anyone is interested, I bought and am happy with these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GOOSV98/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Immediately slapped those on my bundled controller that I got at the end of July with my PS4 and my Wave Blue I got in August... no regrets. I've read the materials on newer controllers are better and I know they're covered by warranties, but might as well not take any chances. I actually prefer the top of the stick being flat as opposed to concave anyway.

Okay. Just ordered those ORB grips.

I just received my Destiny PS4 Bundle so the controllers are brand new. But better safe than sorry, eh?

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I've had the Orb grips to protect my sticks after seeing what happened to others, replacing them with Xbox One stick was the best thing I've done, they're very similar to the original DS4's and feel just as good and I can confirm they are definitely more durable after months of use .

Noticed my left analog started going funny last night during Destiny which was really disappointing, it looked like I had made a cut across the bottom rim of the stick where it was coming apart.

Picked up the ORB set everyone else seemingly has, got them from Argos earlier today as I couldn't be bothered waiting. Tried both the thumb grips, went for the convex ones as the concave while more like the actual DS4 sticks felt too high and a bit odd. These convex grips though, they feel surpringly good, I only got them so it didn't ruin the sticks but I am pleasantly surprised by them.

Such a shame about the sticks though, the controller is generally so great next to the DS3 that in typical Sony fashion something silly got past them they didn't check properly.

I have read several threads regarding this issue, and it doesn't only apply to EU. Someone from Canada said they didn't have to pay for postage/shipping. It is clear to see that it is probably dependant on who you speak to.

Seeing all these posts about the rubber ripping off made me get some grips. I needed them anyway because my thumbs were constantly sliding off the analog sticks. Never had that problem with any other controller. Grips solved that problem. It's a great controller other than that...and maybe the battery life.

The two people on the line I talked to wanted me to send the entire system in-box back to them, which I found unacceptable when it was just the controller that has an issue. Then I talked them into the controller alone and shipping costs and credit card payment was mentioned. I told them thanks, but no thanks. Amazon sorted it out much more clearly and simply.

You can get these at Gamestop for $7.99. Kind of a lot for grips but I was too impatient to wait for shipping. I've read some people complain that they can come off during play. I haven't had that happen. Maybe if they're not put on properly. Another thing I read were people saying their thumb would slide off when they got sweaty. I don't have sweaty thumbs so i'm good there.

That's a joke. Sony CS over there are something else by the sounds of it.

Anyone know where I can get the Xbox One thumbsticks in UK? Looking for OEM ones, not the fake replicas.

Aren't they all made in China, anyway?

I got some from Amazon, and I doubt they are OEM. When I compare them to the ones on my XB1 controller, they feel and look identical.

Did Sony fix the stick problem, yet? My PS4 purchase is on hold just in case.

Over some sticks? Lets not be silly now...$7 and 10 minutes of my time.

Not that silly, I'll easily hold out for now if the sticks are still bad.

Of course if they're still fucked up when MGS V is about to drop then I may change my tune :lol

Again, $7 and 10 minutes of time.

It's an improvement that I would do all over again. I swapped the sticks, even though I never had an issue with the original DS4 sticks, no rubber issues. Now, it's simply the best controller I've ever used. Improved over the OEM DS4 and better than the XB1 controller.

I agree with Fjordson, why should we have to pay extra to fix Sony's problem? Same thing started happening to my brother's sticks yesterday, and it pisses me off.
