I loved his work on Saints Row, I hope the franchise doesn't take a nosedive now. On the other hand, Steve at Valve...Hot damn!

I can't wait to see the next game he doesn't make at Valve. I wonder if it'll be as good as the game Clint Hocking didn't make while he was there.

If only Valve had a single player story driven series to work on, pity they don't...

Wouldn't want any saints row influence to touch anything to do with half life (or portal)

From the rest of the replies, are we really going to go through the asinine 'valve makes no games' crap all over again?
They make plenty of games.

Kinda bummed about the news, really. I mean, Valve's stuff is great, without a doubt, but I think I'd've rather seen him continue on at Volition. (I'm a big SR fan.) Still, people need to go where they'll be happiest. Hopefully the new job will give him whatever it is he's looking for, be it better salary or new creative opportunities (or both).

These fucking hats really are the bane of Valve...

Some real speculation? Interesting

Well, when the Valve JIRA leaked, Clint Hocking was on the Left 4 Dead 3 team.

The only notably active project at Valve outside of supporting existing projects seems to be Left 4 Dead 3.

Half-Life 3 seems to have around 40 people, but that's not anywhere near enough to ship a Half-Life game and quite a few of those were also on other projects as well, so I get a sense it's in a "still messing around with things trying to figure out where we want to go in our spare time" kind of stage. They probably use it to prove out some of their technology too.

You realize the entirety of Valve doesn't sit on the hat certification line, right?

No. Most of the hats are created by people on the workshop and accepted by Valve who then gives them a cut.

That's the joke.

nope. they've outsourced all of that to the community

They almost literally do nothing yet still make bank.

Name some years over the past two console generations they didn't release a game and I'll tell you what they did instead.

I don't think the backlash is that surprising honestly.

It's like Epic or Crytek right? They switched from what was a singleplayer heavy retail focus to an online service game focus.

Now, I play lots of online service games so things are fine on my end, but it's not hard for me to imagine why someone who like Gears or Half-Life or Crysis would be upset with where the companies are now.

Good luck to him.

Yeah, pretty much.

They make plenty of games.

For my money they haven't made any ambitious games for over half a decade. They feel more like an R&D company with a suite of very polished and ultimately conservative titles (CSGO, DOTA2, TF2)

Half-Life 3 received a second group, named "Core", in the months between the two JIRA leaks, so something is in motion on that front. It's quite clear that L4D3 is Valve's next big release, however, which pushes HL3 back to 2016 at the absolute earliest, which in turn means this will come to pass:

Fun fact: If not released earlier, Episode Three/Half-Life 3 will become Valve's longest-gestating project on October 3rd, 2015 (judging from initial announcement -> release date).

TF2 had a good run but it's almost (that's "almost" in Valve Time) time for the proverbial torch to be passed. ;)

This is true, but what has this got to do with what he said? They still make games, whether or not they're safe is a different question.

l4d and portal are the opposite of conservative games.
The way dota2 was handled was also anything but conservative

I love how Valve's achievement of making one of the top 5 most popular games on the planet in the last couple of years is dismissed so easily, but we get all these comments about hat jokes instead.

I am guessing the profit Valve got on the TI4 compendium is roughly equivalent to what L4D3 would do on its entire opening day. I'm not sure why it's Valve's fault that people who love single-player story driven games aren't willing to pay as much for them as people who love multiplayer systems driven games or why Valve should choose to ignore that fact and make games that make them less money.
