Famitsu interview with Tabata details Final Fantasy XV's battle system and more

Eh... I'm not so sure on that. I get more of a Souls vibe. Granted, the only thing I'm basing this on is THIS precise scene.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnDxg2afpCE#t=119

The stumble and the weight of the attack... no HP thing could just be for the demo to show what happens etc but might also not be. Never know on that since that part wasn't directly confirmed.
Seeing it in action again, it does look more like FFXII than KH.

But it looks more cooler than FFXII with more dynamic animation and less repetitive looking.

Gotta elaborate on that.

Again, that's just one very small scene but Gladiolus reminds me of the drawbacks of using a heavy weapon similar to souls games or mon hun. Maybe more mon hun... sorry.

You know how often I get mad a developers...never....I think this is probably the first time ever Ive actually been mad at a dev...Im always for "let devs do what they want", but for the first time im thinking that actually is not a good idea

Can you please show me the line where he specifically said "simplified"? I want to verify what he really said.

Wait a second... this sounds like Chain of Memories actually... I really liked CoM...
Maybe I'm dense, but how are you getting CoM vibes? That game actually had a pretty neat battle system. The way this is described makes it sound like everything is automated with hardly any input from the player.
yea regarding the action shit that's why I was acting disappointed by his comments in a different thread a day or so back when people were saying "it's still action like". The writing is on the wall that it's not going to be that hands on gameplay wise as much as we believed.

when this demo comes out mannnnnnnnnnnnnnn Gaf will be interesting
I'm making the OT for the demo. The meltdowns in that thread are going to be of epic proportions :(

Which Final Fantasy games are challenging and fair from the get-go? That's probably the most universal critique for the series, it takes until boss fights or specific points where the battle system becomes interesting.

Yuck. Just when the hype for this game was starting to sound deserving they go and release this information. Only control Noctis? No female party members? Battle system not sounding too great?

Oh well. Time to wait for more examples.

Edit: Wait, It seems I misread and they're only talking about the demo when controlling Noctis?

Aah, so you're new to Square-Enix games! Welcome to the party.

BloodBorne and TW3 are happening.

They will be true action, challenging, mature games...

So if you guys want that you can get your fill and some more from these two games.

FFXV is going in a very, very different direction.

FFXV is trying to appeal to the casual crowd.

My suspicion is that they're looking at Skyrim sales because they probably want to get them Skyrim numbers. :p

like how many developers want them COD numbers.

Its obvious SE isn't keen on turning FF into an actual action RPG. No one wants this middle ground easy ass shit, go back to turn-based or ATB and hurry up on KH3.

I'm hyped as hell and am getting both day one. Still I stay cautiously optimistic since everything but this sounds so good, but damn I wish KH 3 was coming out sooner.

would be hilarious if the original vision was a more menu driven complex system, but they had to scale all that back because that would hide the pretty visuals!

Explains the really minimalistic menus.

Hey, maybe it can pull of FFXIII's combat.

FFXIII was simple but complex at the same time (towards the end, you really have to strategize).

This game and Square Enix in general are like a bad abusive relationship that I keep returning to. I don't know why I let myself keep getting hyped up and excited again and again. Disappointment always follows.

well in XIII you had 6 characters to switch around by the end of the game so..

we aren't even getting the basic XIII stuff

Ah.

Heavy weapon usage is Souls games is mainly attack baiting and dodging, the universal dodge button for FFXV sorta makes those elements moot, or I imagine they would. Its vulnerability versus attack speed in the Souls games, it can come down to frames or a second.

Never played Monster Hunter.

Shit, they never do this for KH, the series with Disney characters in it. KH still has some automation with some attacks (to an extent), but you still feel highly in control. And it has difficulty options to boot.

Is FF XV even going to have difficulty options?

Okay, hold on. What? When was the last time KH was legitimately difficult? KH1? I damn near slept through KH2.

Now that I have an idea of how the combat works in XV rewatching the trailer is making me sad

But FFXV combat will be just as fun to look at.

And since you won't be busy pressing a myriad of different button combinations to achieve what is shown in the video, you'll be able to appreciate the visuals even more. =P

I'm really excited about this game. Is it PS4 exclusive, or will it eventually come to XB1?

No wonder they didn't release any info before... everyone jumps to crazy conclusions.

All we have to do is get the demo in March, try the battle system, and if you don't like it, LET THEM KNOW!

All that said, I do hope they include a "hard mode" that lets us choose options, or like a manual mode like in Tales.

Probably Terra's final boss battle in BbS. That was the last time I felt there was a real technical battle where you have to learn to block and counter, not to overdo combos to expose yourself, react well to patterns because the attacks do a lot of damage, etc.

the fuck? stella and luna aren't party members? s-e what the fuck are you doing
I can't believe I'm saying this, but SE is being worse than EA. When EA ruins a game you used to care about they walk straight up to you, stab you in the gut and laugh as you slowly bleed out. It's predictable. Square-Enix emotionally abuses you for years, puts you in the ER and then refuses the pull the plug to spare you from the pain after you beg them to.

Yeah it's really dumb. When peoples only excuse is "WELL X-2 WAS AN ALL FEMALE CAST" that completely ignores the fact women are under represented in games, the reception was negative BECAUSE it was an all female cast and the game was always going to turn out with a more predominant female cast due to the circumstances of each character.

It's too bad because I've always found Final Fantasy to be one of the best when it comes to female characters.

That will do absolutely nothing to affect the design of the game. Is the game going to be delayed further for divisive opinions? This is what we're going to get. I'm not dismissing the idea of criticism, but I am being dismissive over the idea that demo players will have a say in changing the game.

The demo is meant to appease and satisfy people, not to test the game's design.

I guess it doesn't really count since it makes them damage-sponges, but Proud and Critical mode certainly adds some difficulty. It's still not a hardcore game by any example of modern "hardcore" games (Souls), but it does get harder.
Tabata also said your party is male only. Which is expected I guess.
It is? I thought Stella/Luna was supposed to be party material eventually.

So the negatives out of this combat system:
- Holding "Attack" for continuous string of attacks instead of manual pressing for better feedback
- Holding "Guard" for continuous dodging, and no manual dodge roll
- No Manual Weapon Switching
- No Manual Party Assists
- No Party Switching (only Noctis playable?)

It's basically set up your weapons, and then just hold the "Attack" button and let the AI do its thing. How is that fun?

What it should have been:
- Mash attack for every single attack
- Can manually switch weapons with a button (like say L1)
- Can manually call for party assists when close by with a button (say Square)
- Can manually switch to other party members with a button (say R1)
- Have the KH like command menu for each character (or map to face/shoulder buttons)
- Have the FFXII gambits for ordering other characters when you're not controlling them

God damn it.

Sounds like a more active version of FF XII, as do the environments (and their appearance in the trailer), and this pleases me.

For all the automation that FF XII, using Gambits actually allowed me to be far more involved in not-automated tasks than other FF games. In other FFs, you'd never bother most of the abilities or spells, but when you have your Gambits set-up in XII and play on Active Mode, that automation actually frees up time to do other things. None of which are necessary but are certainly fun.

I actually find that I spend far more time customization my Gambits or using Abilities in real time in XII than I ever do in other FF games other than spamming Attack, Attack, Attack, Attack, or maybe some Cure or Draw for variety. To be sure, FF XII suffered from the same balance issues as FFTs in that you can easily over-level or 3-4 abilities can break the game in the same way as TG Cid. But if you choose to avoid those flaws, much in the same way you can choose to use Geomancers instead of Cid in FFT and not over-level, there's a lot of things you can do with the combat.

I find I appreciate FF XII's combat more when I look at it not as an active combat battle system but a battlefield management or strategy system. The whole point is that you set up your strategy for reactionaries, conservation, etc before entering the battlefield, and half the fun is actually watching your strategy unfold and work by itself. It's similar to how you build a town in Settlers and the enjoyment is watching a perfectly designed city be navigated by your peasants, or when you set up the perfect strategy of supply routes in Romance of the Three Kingdoms and watch your automated 'eco-system' in effect.

So, seeing this influence in XV is not something I dislike. If anything, I think it can free up time for other things. A clear design goal is the relationships between the characters, and I think some level of tactical automation can actually bolster that. If the system is similar to Gambits, you could set up triggers where 2 characters interact in a way that is simply not possible in real-time, such as how, when you're control Basch, you could half Balthier use a Handkerchief on Penelo if she gets the Oil effect -- see the relationship and story reference there? With automation, these things could also tailored by the player and are a way to add personal style to the relationships. That's the logic, at least, and obviously balance can effect how practical or necessary it actually is.

But personally, as someone that found customizing and management Gambits and then using their automation to enjoy the smaller less-relevant abilities as much more involving than any other FF game, I welcome any XII influence in XV. I think it actually has a lot of potential for a game that is supposed to about how 4 characters interact.

Versus is dead, gaiz.

That being said, listening to how the battle system is being described doesn't make me excited either, though I'm willing to give it a chance.

However, I fear March is too late for mechanics improving feedback.

Still hoping Stella gets her own playable scenario, with her own party and locations. It would be the best way to expand that game's world and royalty.

It has to be the same game though. I don't want to wait another 2 years after FFXV just to get Stella's side of the story.

Well, Versus XIII got cancelled in 2012, it's time to accept this is not the game we've been waiting for since 2006.
