First day blog is at it again, someone who can read JP should check his latest post!

He is surprised because it's even worse than he was expecting.

Things I expect this week in Japan:

- A smaller than expected drop in Smash Bros. 3DS sales
- 40k minimum for 3DS

- Xbox One in triple digits
- Bayonetta 2 30k?
- PS4 back below 8k
- Destiny dropping -80%

That will depend on how big was the shipment. Smash has been sold out for almost the whole week.

Wow I have literally heard nothing about that. Was there an interview or tweets or something? I've been curious about the reasoning ever since Sony announced a PS3 version of the game

Unfortunately I'm on mobile, so I don't have any links on hand. However there are both tweets and interviews that indicate something to that nature around if anyone has those links.

So what do you guys think the chances are that we get a second Tales game in 2015 that isn't Zestiria.

It's the series 20th year anniversary, and it had two mainline titles release on its 10th year anniversary which was the first time it ever happened, so it could happen again. It was also the first time in over 15 years we had two years go by without a mainline title, which could by explained because they were working on two games.

It could maybe explain why Baba is so adamant keeping Zestiria a PS3 exclusive, so they then announce a bigger one for PS4 after it's released.

We had a guy on gaf who works on video game music and Verendus mention Tales of PS4 the otherday, which got me thinking about this.

But that's just one aspect they need to address. Put simply Nintendo's brand and the product itself simply aren't positioned to attracting that audience.

I remember Iwata saying the strategy of Nintendo was to "put smiles on people's faces." Things such as the UI and general tone of their consoles are very "in your face" about it, like Miis, light-hearted music, colors. That shop-keeper who bows at you before going on the 3DS e-Shop. Vastly different from the 360 and PS4, when I boot up those machines, they seem to want to "conduct business" with me instead, with ads and offers to buy digital content right on the same screen as the selection to start a game, and for the PS4 even, a serious ambiance to the background music and dark blue colors to accentuate that they mean business, haha! This consumer psychology stuff is nothing I know about though. But I can say that there is a definite difference to the tone I feel when using Nintendo's platforms versus others, even compared to how they were with N64 and Gamecube, a difference that perhaps skews which games I now associate with the machines and the brand. It's neat though that for Nintendo, they can push for a quirky game such as Tomodachi Life and have that be a top seller on their platform, without people thinking it's unusual for them to do that :p

I agree a lot with what u are saying there here. While Ninty Eshop is still lacking especially on account front, I can't said that I had been numerously charmed by all little things they had there.

The store mascot which actually is playing with us by peeking and playing around our Download marbles, a special rabbit Mii on trying to sell us all the Mii games, Music pumping around makes Eshop looks and sounds more cherful compared to the very business like Sony and MS ones.

One of my favorite scene is when I am transfering my Wii data to Wii U and 3ds to another 3ds transfer.

Unlike others would simply only put a bar, Ninty makes Pikmin lift the thing to us and ride a rocket to a new planet called Wii U lol.

That is sooo damn charming for me.

There is no way we're getting a PS4 Tales game in 2015. We could possibly get an escort title, but I wouldn't expect more than a mobile title. That being said, if Namco Bandai announces another release of ToP I'm going to be pissed.

Phantasia 3D, BELIEVE!!!

Hey if SE can do it with FF1, why the hell not? I'd love it! *whistles*...

The only PS4 Tales title I can see feasible in 2015 is a HD port of one of the existing PS3 games.

Otherwise, no way. Baba doesn't have the manpower for it.

Yeah saw that. Wouldn't be surprised if a PS4 Tales game is in dev already though I reckon a 2016 release is what will happen.

There is a chance Zestiria will be ported to PS4 hopefully by the time of its localisation.

It's incredible. Super Smash Bros for 3DS is still sold out at almost every shop in Japan.

Yamada Denki:
The game is sold out, pre-order it! And also pre-order MH4G, Pokemon and New 3DS!

Digital sales for September will be very interesting.

In akiba I saw a store selling xbones with 5000 yen cut off the price. Might have been preowned but looked sealed. That's still a bigger discount than other consoles get even when obviously used...

Boy o boy. Smash is still doing so well here.

What do Sales Gaffers predict here? Can Smash defeat Youkai sales number this year?

I am on yes if they keep having this sold out. As it shows many people want that game bad.

We'll still have to see if Sony is able to convince them to release a PS4 port. It may not launch in January, but being on both platforms will surely help them in the West.

Otherwise, they could release a port of a old game or something. Vesperia should work nicely, the art style holds up quite well and it's like 5 years old. The Xillia subsaga isn't that old (3 and 2 years old) and those shitty fields won't hold up as well as the overworld and dungeons in Vesperia. Graces could work too, but it isn't as loved as the other.

And most of the older games have already received remakes or ports. And are 2D if you don't count Symphonia (already released on PS3) and Abyss (already released on 3DS).

They could always knock at Omega Force door and ask them to develop a "to not give up, even if you have to fight against hordes of enemies RPG" (that totally isn't a musou) for PS4 first. Those guys alone are already making like half of the games announced for next-gen. One more won't matter lol.

You say that like they aren't willing to remake or port the games again.

It's a little late, but it could be interesting to make a special prediction league with YTD for Smash 3DS, Youkai Watch 2, Monster Hunter 4G and Pokémon OR/AS, since these four games are all the challengers to become the 2014 #1.

That's a special trait that only Phantasia gets :p

Time for Western fans to finally get Vesperia on PS
4

Day 1 if it happens.

Well, they could try to do what they did with Symphonia. The PS2 port (version they used for the HD remaster) have some extra contents that weren't voiced in English. Instead of hiring a new dub, they just gave people Dual Audio and didn't recorded any new lines.

Still, I don't know what to say. Namco is lately being on a roll with localizations and all that. But I think this game shouldn't be subbed in French, German, Italian and Spanish. Is an HD version of an old game and the original only had English subs. Making 4 new localizations for a HD remaster is not wise and they may lose money.

The problem is that people will bash the game if it is English only. <-- Obviously a smaller problem than losing money though :p

I kind of feel like Minecraft not being on Wii U or being announced is the perfect example of Nintendo's poor culture of helping/supporting 3rd parties [at least western 3rd parties]

I think it's pretty obvious that Sony worked closely with Mojang and 4J to give them PS3/PS4/PSV versions of Minecraft, either through technical help or promotional offerings etc.

And as Minecraft is to come to Vita, a platform arguably in a worse position than the Wii U in some ways, I truly feel that Nintendo could've forced the issue and gotten Minecraft themselves but simply didn't provide whatever support was needed

I mean can you imagine if Minecraft never comes to the Wii U? The console that should by historic precedence be the most appealing to the age group that is buying Minecraft in spades

To be fair Mojang was really slow in bringing Minecraft to all platform, and the Vita version probably only happened because they were already working with Sony. From what I gather they've tried to make it as easy as possible to move code across their platforms. But yes the Wii U could really need a Minecraft port, but I doubt it's going to happen now even if MS says they'll keep it multiplatform for now. What they really should have done though is a 3DS version.

The 3DS version of Smash really is paying off. Can potentially beat Brawl sales on its own in Japan, even if the Wii U version comes out

it's interesting how probably will be the 3DS to put the Wii U to rest, with the Smash nail to the coffin.

So, the next Kenka Bancho game has been unveiled on Famitsu. It's Kenka Bancho 6 for 3DS. Sales of previous entries:

 • Kenka Bancho (PS2, 2005) - 108,958 (+34,718 budget version)
 • Kenka Bancho 2: Full Throttle (PS2, 2007) - 85,632
 • Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble (PSP, 2008) - 141,627 (+31,774 budget version)
 • Kenka Bancho Portable (PSP, 2009) - 28,295
 • Kenka Bancho 4: Ichinen Sensou (PSP, 2010) - 179,354 (+38,339 budget version)
 • Kenka Bancho 5: Otoku no Rule (PSP, 2011) - 137,146 (+22,998 budget version)
 • Kenka Bancho Bros.: Tokyo Battle Royale (PSP, 2012) - 56,776

It's a 130-150,000 units series, not bad.

What numbers are people thinking FF Explorers could do? Also this year will be insane for 3ds software. We've already had 3 titles sell over 1m this year (YW1, YW2, Smash 3ds). Pokemon and MH4U to join them barring something weird.

Good to see Smash 3ds do well in Japan.

Also revealed in Famitsu is Ukiyo no Shishi (憂世ノ志士) for PS3 and Ukiyo no Roushi (憂世ノ浪士) for Vita. This is the "Not Way of the Samurai" project which was teased during the recent SCEJA Press Conference.

It seems that at least the shipment for Bayonetta 2 is not that big according to some retailers.
Probably it's not hitting the bomba bins.

Retailers learnt the lesson.

That's even worse for Nintendo. Overshipping a bomba is a good way for publishers to shift more of the loss to retailers instead of eating it themselves. Like what happened with ASH. Lol.

I am 400k ground here as this is the only big and truthful Raid game genre which is released on 3ds especially after Mon Hun 4G here.

Any more info on what this actually is? And why it's "not" Way of the Samurai?

I think a game like bayonetta 2 made a lot more sense for nintendo when their general market prospects were better. When the wii u had a shot at being the next wii ("is there any reason the wii u won't dominate Japan", basically), financing and publishing Bayonetta 2 was a clear move at cultivating a core audience and attracting a core demographic. It makes less sense when the system is comatose (the marginal benefit of the title is infinitesimal at this point and the marginal cost is significant) but it is still nice to have the game, of course.

I think it probably took too long to come out. I guess it really wasn't far along at all when it was announced.

Samsh wouldn't be #1 as I don't think it will sell more than YK2 (probably ~2.5 mil to ~3 mil). MH 4G probably won't make it either. It's up to the old champ (Pokemon) to beat the new champ (YK2).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Do we have any info yet if this weekly Famitsu has August digital sales?

So far, I've yet to see anything about Famitsu's print issue at all. Nothing about it yet, just the content already posted on Famitsu.com.

Are we expecting to see a hardware bump for the Wii U tomorrow? Seems like Bayo 2 is one of those titles that you might buy a console for and then sell it back when you've finished.

I'm not. I expect many to get a used WiiU instead to play Bayonetta 2.
