HELP

Guys they are trying to tell us something. We must free of them of this never ending cycle of LN adaptations.....by ignoring them.

Magazine illustrations (including posters like these) are chosen by the magazine staff. They'll send an idea to the publicity person for each show and that gets modified and returned with a sketch from the animation studio. That process repeats until both magazine/publicist agrees and the image is made. Nothing to do with KyoAni in this case as publicity is from Kadokawa.

Do Kyoto Animation's own producers don't have a say on what commissioned promotional materials (like these from NYANTYPE) go through from their staff even with the studio being part of the production committee?

So you're trying to say that no one at KyoAni maybe likes and supports the idea of drawing such things.

Free is not that old or the original source is anything but tame.

Terra Formars - 01

So the OVA from earlier was a prequel, Bugs 2 was it? I bet the three ones in the last shot of the OVA is still alive.
I really like the premise, is it known how many episodes this well get?

Ghost in the Shell: SAC Ep. 22

What a stupid episode. Who signed off on this script? Both Aramaki and the Major had a hand on the idiot ball.
Am I really supposed to believe that they would both fall for such obvious traps? Seriously?
The fanservice was the cherry on top of this shit cake.

Edit: This was another P.A. Works episode. I am shocked. Shocked. Though Masayuki Yoshihara wasn't the director oddly enough.

I'm curious of your reaction to the finale. My memory is fuzzy but I remember it being contrived as hell. If this episode bothered you, it doesn't augur well.

Chevalier D'Eon 02

After recovering from the mind rape that his sister's soul subjected him to.(!) D'Eon quickly changes from being the pursuer to being pursued. While evading capture he quickly assembles a crew, who proceed to name themselves (how aptly) 4 musketeers. They even have their own Robin ! Also, lots of mercury zombies.

Good episode. They fixed the pacing which made all the dialogue and character interactions flow much more naturally. I got 3 good if short sword fights already so the show is already delivering in that department. D'Eon is awfully quick quick to trust people who flat out admit to joining him on 3rd party's requests.

I'm providing a translation of how these magazine illustrations work from a post that the publicist for Chuunibyou wrote on the blog. For that show, the publicist nicknamed Jitetsu from Pony Canyon was contacted from the magazines with orders for illustrations (he provides the example of wanting an image of the four girls laughing and screaming in swimsuits).

I didn't say that no one at the studio didn't want to draw it, but instead felt like this could be an educational moment to expand on how those types of images are chosen.

Baby Steps END - Overall liked this show. Solid 8/10. Generally likable characters, tennis seemed mostly good though may have dragged on a bit in places. Chief complaints:

1. I referred to Mario as "Rooster Hair-kun" in my brief synopsis of eps 1-8 a few pages back. I'm disappointed that the show didn't acknowledge this until more than halfway through the show. Takuma eventually made mention of it, as did new coach near the very end.

2. All the tennis players had their own quirks to them, but they were all grounded in reality with the exception of the guy that "draws pictures with his shots." That felt out of place in this show.

3. The last scene with Marou and Natsu. Ugh, no that's what you say there Marou. I know they have to leave a cliffhanger for season two, but given the events of the previous episode that's just dumb.

Also, Sasaki did not play much of a role. I thought she was there to cause tension in Marou, instead he's just oblivious and she's sitting on the sideline with a "woe is me" attitude.

When it comes to deciding on a team name, the franchise prefers that of taking a letter from everyone's names and combining that. That's how you end up with the likes of MARs and Happy Rain. So it's not much of a surprise that when the letters came together, we end up with the name of the new group. SoLaMi Smile. It's a simple name, and a cute one. What I really took from this episode was Sophie's attitude during practice - that is, not even knowing what practice is. "Spacey" is quickly overtaking "refined" for her main image. And I love it.

Having her guardians on the side of the main characters is making things fun, too. Chanko's growing on me. The way she treasures Sophie's ticket was a cute little moment. It's the end of the episode that also interests me. Shion is the most traditionally Japanese in her mannerisms, and has a way deeper voice than I was expecting for her character design. Now it's just a matter of getting the twins to come around and work with her...

I understand that, but on the contrary I don't think it unequivocally denotes how promotional matters are forcibly handled to them by the external production team. As far as I know, publicity isn't handled by the production company only but by a group formed by both publicists from the production company AND also from the studio in question. I'm sure there are specific requests to comply in broad terms coming from the external producers and publicists, and every procedure changes from project to project, but I'm fairly sure any content or product have to be approved and checked by the internal studio's promotion staff I mentioned.

You know, I keep recurring too much to the old TTGL 'GAiNAX weblogs' (http://gainax.weblogs.jp/gurrenlagann/) as an example of many things production-related (probably because I followed it religiously at the time), but even then I'd say all the information that came from it mostly by Yoshio Manabe's way (GAiNAX own publicist at the time) explained all the green-lighting process for many related material necessarily coming from inside their own staff, and not only from Aniplex Inc., obligations.

Oh, and the man from Pony Canyon you mention is Teppei Nojima (@nojitetsu), right?

Magimoji Rurumo 12 + Final Thoughts

I haven't read/watched Yowapeda - and have no plans to - but as a romcom, this was pretty average. Like a witch version of SoraOto, but with more human characters and less fantasy world politics. I'm always glad to support Mimorin in more of her roles, and some episodes - such as the cosplay one - were a lot of fun. Mostly, it was something that felt kinda from another era in its humor, though not in an entirely bad way. My real favorite romcom of the season was delayed until later in the day, unfortunately.

:D

But this is basically moot, since she lost to Ayase (WTF?) in the previous round.
Well, I stand corrected. But I also didn't account for Mikoto losing all her power and getting flattened herself by Yoshino in the first round either.

The entire thing is plagued by vote fixing and manipulation anyway so it's not like the results are actually indicative of any character's true popularity.

For Kyoto Animation, maybe I wrongly assumed how it operates based on how others do... so I have my doubts if what I said above could be standard procedure in their case too or not. It is for that why even taking into account all I've said above I still trust your knowledge of them over what I could ever infer, ultimatemegax. :)

It's not a matter of being "forced" to do anything. On the contrary, it is usually collaborative. You have to understand that magazine spreads and posters are basically just advertising for a show in a magazine. But instead of being a paid advertisement, what anime magazines offer is that they will request certain types of illustrations which fit their readership best, and the studio will do their best to accommodate these requests. It's a win-win scenario for both parties. So naturally some magazines will have lewder spreads than others because their demographic is more interested in perverted stuff. Some productions can afford to ignore such magazines entirely, but that's not realistic for every show given the sort of industry anime is.

So everyone wants a piece of Sei. Although our Student Council President doesn't want to play for Sei like Sazaki does. He wants to play against him after hearing the rumors of Sazaki's defeat. After Sei clarifies what happens and Reiji's magical appearance at the school, it's only natural we'd get a fight on our hands. The short of it all is that Reiji lost but is now interested in Gunpla Battle.

Seriously, who is Ral? It's nice he gave a detailed lesson who how technology behind this works, but, how'd you get inside the school so freely?

Yeah, that's right. To be perfectly clear, my only pet peeve with what ultimatemegax commented was this phrase:

Nothing to do with KyoAni in this case as publicity is from Kadokawa.

... which I find that implied a dismissive or powerless stance from Kyoto Animation for their role on this matter, notion that I don't think is totally true. Obviating that, the rest of what ultimatemegax said was as always pretty spot-on and informative.

Majimoji Rurumo Episode 12 [End]

That was a good final episode, I did kind of cringe bit at the plot because its been done elsewhere before but the use of it to have little recaps of all the fun moments, and Kota being so determined to give back made it even more worthwhile. I loved how all the friends were there too to have a good time. Its always so good when outsiders to friend groups can be taken in and welcome. Just realized we had the opposite in Glasslip.

8/10.

Thus far best ending episodes of the season go to Glasslip, A/Z, Free!, and Nobunaga Concerto.

so, some final thoughts on Psycho-Pass.

Psycho-Pass thinks I'm stupid. It thinks it has to outright tell me the motivations, philosophies, and opinions of its characters. It thinks it actually has to point me in the direction of comparable literature. "Show, don't tell" is completely lost on this series to the point where I think you could actually decrease the episode count if you cut down on the talking. It's a 22 episode series that, if Urobuchi and Fukami were put on a leash by a decent editor, could have been told in about 13. Because for all the talking the characters do, very little of it actually fleshes them out. Akane feels like the only real character here, and even then it takes her 20 episodes to get to a point that would feel like nothing special in another show. But here her development feels significant because it's in contrast to the general Cool Guy archetype, a villain who seems to exist largely to spout literary references, and a bunch of background characters.

None of that dialogue addresses the themes of the show in much depth, either. Many of the the ones that would occur to any observant viewer aren't even brought up. For example, why is it not considered murder to shoot someone because the system told you to, but it is considered murder to shoot someone the system says not to but would otherwise be marked for death if he didn't have some built-in immunity? Is the Psycho-Pass system truly reliable when it fluctuates so heavily? What are the implications of locking someone up for a crime they haven't committed? All of this is glossed over for some half-formed ideas regarding individuality. There's so much the show can do here.

As much as I've criticized Psycho-Pass, it's still watchable. Some of the action scenes are suspenseful, some of the developments are interesting, parts of the show can be legitimately engaging. It's a mix of decent and bad that, at its worst, is boring. But between two absolutely stupid plot twists, a variety of contrivances, mediocre-to-bad production values, and far too much talking, it's something I really wouldn't recommend. 6/10.

Fairy Tail Series 2 Episode 26

Why arent they having Gray lose his clothes anymore, the mud theme was an opportunity they should be ashamed of not capitalizing on. Its like his most defining trait :/ Also it seemed like filler with a touch of canon thrown in when the Dark Mage Zeref and Mavis spoke.

Berserk - 07

Guts can't handle Casca, now how long before they're sharing bed?

Gruesome looking brother is 'next in line to the throne', gee I wonder what will happen
Griffith laying eyes on the princess, and what an appropriate place to stumble. Up next is the Brock Lesnar general and the bridge fortress

On the subject of Terror in Resonance, I find myself tempted to disagree when people say that Five is a useless character, or that she ruined the show, because of how excited I was by the episode where she was first introduced. At that point in the show, there had to be someone who could actually disrupt the protagonists' plans, a true opposing force beyond Shibasaki, and Five seemed to actually be an antagonist who could fight Sphinx thematically as well as literally.

When she prevents them from simply backing out of the bombing that they set up, and forces them to deal with the consequences, it seemed to be saying, "You're naive if you think you can play a bloodless game with human lives," as if these bombings could be nothing more than landmarks on a treasure map. Sphinx thought they could play everything out as an elaborate intellectual exercise with the police, and Five's response to that was to beat them at their own game by proving they weren't willing to do what they said. Could they keep planting bombs for their goal knowing that people might die?

But then in the next episode it doesn't matter, because Five starts bombing people herself, advancing their agenda (Haneda Airport was also tied to the society they wanted to expose) while leaving them morally clean. And her reasoning for going that far had nothing to do with the emotions that tied Sphinx and Lisa together, nor did it have to do with the political drama that created the Athena Plan and got America involved. She affirmed or negated nothing. She was just a force of chaos shaking up the plot for its own sake. Especially in light of the ending, everything surrounding her character has no real bearing on the show.

For all the missteps the show had with Lisa, her alienation from the world tied her with Sphinx and gave her development a purpose. But Five would have to act fundamentally differently to be a positive influence on the show.

The twist is way better than that. You're not even trying.

Well, I don't want to try too hard! Don't want to ruin the surprise!

It's more exciting for my assumptions to be subverted rather than confirmed, after all.

You're watching yet another of my favorite anime? You're on a roll good sir. Be prepared to watch one of the most well thought out sci fi time travel shows/movies in a long time. I've said it multiple times but the other one I really enjoyed is the indie film Primer.

Well, from the plot description, I am expecting some cleverness.

Cleverness in the sense that...

They're gonna send texts back to the past~
To change the shitty future that sucks ass~

Also, when do you plan on watching Gunbuster?

Fate/Stay Night final cm for Kotomine Kirei with a "surprise" at the end:

Hyped as I could ever be.

I'm hyped as well. I can't wait to see some more Ufotable action!

Karen Senki 01

I found the CGI very acceptable by anime standards. Course I also found Knights of Sidonia acceptable and this is a step above that. Also enjoyed the the gunkata I saw though I was half expecting Bangarang by SKRILLEX to start playing any second. Also for robots they sure do have a terrible fucking shot. Interesting enough for me to keep up with this series.

All this F/SN hype has me working harder on the fall OT so we can move away from this shameful optimism.
I know you said the target range was Saturday evening to Sunday morning, but can we at least lean towards the latter and wait until after the final Space Dandy episode airs on Toonami?

That was actually the earliest I was going to bother putting it up as it seemed like a fitting transition point.

Reiji confirms he's an alien and is a prince no less. Granted I don't but the prince part, but him being an alien is honest enough. Anyway, Reiji wants to get stronger due to his beating in the last episode so Ral takes him to a local bar where all the Gunpla fanatics are (and he appears to be in a high rank among them).

Meanwhile Sei completes his Gunpla and in turn inspires his classmate to take part in it. Whether she just wants to be closer to him or truly wants to be a part of it remains to be seen though.

Did he rip out its eye? Stab it in the head?
I have no clue.

Why did they even air it at that time if they can't even show the action.

To sell BD's.
From the manga, it shows that he stomped the bear's head. He crushes its skull and its eyes just pop out.
