Gundam Reconguista in G |OT| Return of the 80s, All Hail the King

Starts October 2. 11:59 PM Japan Time on MBS

What is it?

Reconguista in G (G-Reco) is the next series in the long running Gundam franchise. It’s the first traditional Gundam series after the well received Gundam Unicorn and the first Gundam TV show post the fan-favorite Gundam Build Fighters

Why should I care?

Other than it being a Gundam show, G-Reco is a series that’s been a long time coming. It is the first Gundam project from original Gundam creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino since the Zeta Gundam film trilogy in 2006. It also marks his first Gundam TV series since the amazing Turn A Gundam ended in 2000.

If that’s not enough, G-Reco brings in character design talent from Kenichi Yoshida, famous for his work on Overman King Gainer and Eureka 7. It also includes more Sunrise talent with mechanical designers that have worked on Code Geass, Gundam SEED, The 08th MS Team and Escaflowne.

What’s it about?

G-Reco takes place in the Regild Century(R.C.) year 1014. A young pilot, Bellri Zenam, member of the Capital Guard is caught in an attack on the capital by a group of Space Pirates. In typical Gundam fashion, he encounters the mobile suit Gundam G-Self operated by the pirate group and finds himself as one of the few able to pilot it. Bellri joins the space pirates in uncovering a plot that could change the entirety of the Reguild Century.

Do I need to have seen other Gundam shows to enjoy this?

The Reguild Century is technically a time far in the future of the Universal Century, the main Gundam timeline. That being said, G-Reco wasn’t even originally planned as a Gundam show and nothing so far shows any need for prior knowledge. Expect maybe a few minor callbacks like old mechs in the series, but there probably won’t be much more of a connection than that.

Staff

Studio: Sunrise (Gundam, Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop)
Director: Yoshiyuki Tomino (Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Turn A Gundam, Overman King Gainer)
Character Designer: Kenichi Yoshida (Eureka 7, Overman King Gainer)
Mechanical Designers: Kimitoshi Yamane (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Gundam SEED, The 08th MS Team) , Akira Yasuda (Code Geass)
Music: Yugo Kanno (Psycho-Pass, JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure:Stardust Crusaders)

How can I watch it?

Are you in Japan? If so, G-Reco will be airing on TBS/MBS starting October 2. If not, there is no current official release announced. Gundam.info’s YouTube channel did air Gundam Build fighters, the Gundam SEED HD remasters and will be airing Gundam Build Fighters Try. It’s very possible G-Reco will make its way over there. I will update the OP with an official announcement if/when it’s made.

I like this show, where can I get more?

Gundam Build Fighters Try is airing at the same time. You can check that out on Gundam.info’s Youtube channel or its OT. May I also recommend visiting the Gundam Community OT or the NeoGaf Anime OT ? They’re good people.

Cast

Bellri Zenam
Voiced by: Mark Isshi

A young, Capital Military Cadet sucked into the main conflict of the story. One of the pilots of the Gundam G-Self.

Aida Surgan
Voiced by: Yuu Shimamura

One of the members of the Space Pirates that attack the capital. Also capable of piloting the G-Self.

Raraiya Monday
Voiced by: Yukari Fukui

An amnesiac girl found on Earth piloting the G-Self. Her background and connection to the main suit are unknown.

Mecha (The reason many of us are here)

Gundam G-Self

The main mech of the show. Unlike other Gundam shows, the G-Self will apparently be piloted by 3 different characters. Bellri, Aida and Raraiya. Has an interchangeable backpack weapon system like the Strike Gundam from Gundam SEED. Model kits have currently been seen for the suit with the atmospheric use pack and the space use pack. Has a core fighter system. Core Fighters are awesome.

G-Arcane

Not much is known about this suit other than it’s used by the Pirate faction and it’s transformable. It looks cool. It has a “G” in it’s name, so it’s probably important.

Grimoire

Standard mook suit in G-Reco. Looks like it’s something close to G-Reco’s Zaku-II?

I never understood how all these secret gundam factories exist within the same universe and people are still shocked someone has a super gundam that trumps the rest.

Tomino back to save anime, again. Looking forward to this and of course GBF airing a few days later.

Man, from the main image I thought the main character was going to be female finally.

Tomino pulling another Loran it seems. That was my first reaction to the initial reveal of the MC as well, but it seems like Aida may actually be a co-lead. I'm definitely hoping for that.

Why not 'Reconquista'?

Apparently the Japanese audience like a hard "g" better in the title. That's what I've seen reported anyway.

Alright, Your Majesty, time you tell us what you've got. Episodes of cows in nuclear storage compartments or women complaining about women.

Almost... Eureka 7 looking...

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

While, the character designer is the same one that worked on E7, so that's why they look so similar. That fact gets me so hyped.

Also probably going to throw a GBF: TRY OT together if no one else does it. Will probably throw it up on Tuesday, since I think the general rule on OTs is no more than 1 week before release.

So, how many of the main characters will die in the final two episodes this time? >.>

How is Tomino's mental health nowadays?

I've been so hyped for this show since it was announced 3 years ago. I love Tomino Gundam. His last show, Turn A, is a master piece. I'm so ready for this.

Plus, GBFT will be more fun self-referential fan service. It's a good time to be a Gundam fan :).

Any word on if this will be aired in subtitles on Gundam.Info's channel? Or will we have to get subtitled episodes from elsewhere.

Not a fan of the character and mechanical designs at all. The world design seems fine from the trailers.

Will watch because it's gundam and I have an obligation to but I'm more excited for the new Build Fighters.

Look forward to trying it, not exactly hyped though. Tomino's output is mediocre at best, Turn A is probably the most overrated show amongst Gundam fans.

I will never understand why people love gbf so much. It's literally a boring yugioh with some ok fight scenes and weird references to different gundam series.

It's fun, not dreary angst filled cliche drama we see over and over again in Gundam? It was a breath of fresh air. It also had some excellent animation and the fights were fantastic compared to recent output.
