[Report] Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Preorders 50% behind Ghosts

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare preorders continue to track more than 50 percent behind 2013’s Ghosts, according to Cowen and Company analyst Doug Cruetz. The industry-tracking expert notes that Advanced Warfare is tracking 80 percent behind 2012’s Black Ops II. Call of Duty game regularly generate $1 billion in revenue for Activision, but Ghosts didn’t perform as well as Black Ops II. If Advanced Warfare sells worse than Ghosts, this could signify that the franchise is on a permanent decline.

Surprising given this looks much better than Ghosts.

Haven't bought a COD in years but even I'm tempted.

If AW sells less than Ghosts, this may be the fatigue setting in that helped kill off Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero.

I don't think Ghosts was the reason that CoD is on a decline, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

My theory is that a lot of the casual gamers that COD has catered to in the past have gotten more hardcore and have found better alternatives after the disappointment of Ghosts.

Good. Glad to see mainstream FPSs slowly losing their market share. Hope cinematic 3rd person shooters follow suit.
Are there really that many cinematic third person shooters?

You expect the average consumer to do way too much work.

Folks who bought Ghosts and thought they got burned won't even care to look at what Advanced Warfare is about before it actually comes out.

If Activision truly believes this is a good game they should what they did with Destiny: Public beta for MP during a weekend.

Best way to sell people if the vertical slice is good.

Right now I'm not surprised considering how the market reacted to Ghosts. It never had the numbers online that Black Ops or MW did. In December there were more people online playing Black Ops II (360) than Ghosts on 360+X1.

Not so Day Zero. Seems like Ghosts hurt the franchise for sure.

I have a feeling that it's more just plain franchise fatigue. Black Ops 2 was fairly well received, and yet Ghosts was tracking less than it.

All popular franchises eventually run out of steam.

I get the feeling that this is more Ghost's fault more than anything else. Too bad because I was set on not buying Call of Duty this year until I saw the trailers for Advanced Warfare which I think looked great.

This is what happens when you release a game as bad as Ghosts... People move on to different IPs. Not really surprised tbh.

The fact that they are going with the Titanfall gameplay isn't what many COD players want. I preordered every COD game, but all my friends are passing for this reason.

Downward trend continues for this franchise, while Fifa is selling more than last year. I am comparing them because both of them are annual and both of them sell a lot of copies.

Doesn't Destiny factor into this though? Wouldn't it make sense to throw a lot of marketing at Destiny first and then ramp up COD marketing afterwards?

I wonder if people want more now, than a basic FPS, people want more depth perhaps?

I am thinking of cancelling my order until i finish wolfenstein the new order & Destiny & get CoD when it's cheaper.

The last good CoD was MW2 imo.

Or it could be that Ghosts was so bad that it left a sour taste in everyone's mouth.

It certainly left a bad taste in mine.

I don't think it was the case, though. I mean, yea, Ghosts did help with the decline, but I think fatigue and overall repetitiveness in multiplayer (rank up in the same game modes in different tropes, gimmicks of the year, etc.) is the bigger player here. It happened with other top franchises Activision built up, but failed to maintain.

Ghost was so uninteresting I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people were turned off by it. The treyarch title declining in sales next year will tell us more about this franchise. This one falling behind doesn't say a ton to me.

Shame. Ghosts was one of the worst shooters I've ever played. Just straight up boring. But Advanced Warfare seems like it's going to be ruddy good. Add in Treyarch's recent form with the series and its return next year, it should be a good two years in the series.

Until 2016 anyways...

Kinda expected honestly, few reasons why:
- First CoD after Ghosts
- First Sledgehammer CoD
- They worked on MW3
- It's Not Black Ops 3 (although kinda Black Ops 2.5)
- People are tired of CoD

you guys think it might be because a lot of people are on verge of going ps4/xbone and haven't decided yet if they are getting last-gen or current?

just trying to process...that is a pretty huge decline

Out of all the COD games that have been out the past few years, I'm actually excited about this one. I'm sure the hype will build up soon again once more gameplay vids start leaking.

Good point it could be that they overestimated TitanFall and wanted something similar/competitive. COD AW has 3 year dev cycle right.

Seems the franchise is a ghost of its former self.

"I don't like popular things. I hope popular things are killed off."

I was looking forward to picking up the game for the new co-op modes. They look interesting.

At least I know there wont be any shortage issues when I wait a month.

They used that excuse last year and hoped to buck the trend with this release.
