Media Create Sales: Week 39, 2014 (Sep 22 - Sep 28)

If it suddenly stops selling after December there is this possibility.

looking at western markets, somehow i think while 2015 will be an obvious decline (like 2013 -> 2014 for 3ds), it won't be the system falling off a cliff (like 2013 -> 2014 for vita). part of this is that the system will be supported more regularly throughout the year with software (albeit smaller releases than the likes of mario kart and super smash bros.). 2016 should be when the wheels come off.

3m for japan, 5m for us, and 3m for europe sounds right to me.

Just to clarify shinra, my comments weren't directed at you. I am very much of the opinon that singular software being strong reasons for hw adoption is a flawed concept barring perhaps half a dozen examples in recent times

Bayonetta numbers are odd across the trackers. I'm on mobile so I can't be bothered to do comparisons but it looks like famitsu and dengeki are over media creates this week after being under last week. All seemingly evening out a bit I suppose

Looking back at the hardware numbers when Bayonetta 2 launched (and also this week with PZ to some extent), there wasn´t a notable hardwarebump, therefore the game basically just sold to the existing userbase. It´s more irritating to see that there is a relative large number of self-proclaimed hardcore gamers that don´t buy a system despite having games they actually want to play and rather ignore an excellent game just for the sake of beeing an other companies chearleader.

It´s somewhat understandable that casual gamers just buy a single system and think they are good to go but among "hardcoregamers" it´s really weird, especially considering that money isn´t always the biggest issue, actually a systems-hardware isn´t that big of an investment considering that in the long run you invest multiple time more money in software, to see console wars taking priority over enjoying excellent games is quite sad actually. The most vocal seem to be Sony enthusiast, be it MH (in every damn Monster Hunter thread), DQ, Bayonetta, Tomb Raider or any other Indygame on kickstarter portbegging seems to be far more prevalent.

From a similar mindset also games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Last Story were basically ignored by a large part of the self-proclaimed hardcore gamers just for beeing on the wrong systems, really funny how the focus among certain JRPG-fans shifted to Atelier series and other lolicon niche JRPG instead. In the process Mistwalker was damaged, reduced to making smartphone games for at least some years and videogame fans left with even less options, when it comes to somewhat high-budget JRPGs. Great job "hardcore gamers"/console warriors lol ;)

Sorry but I can't stop laughing that's heat wave class of logic.

We are consumers - that means that companies if they want to get our money they need to make product atractive to us.

I have limited time and money - why would i spent 360$ on for example Bayonetta 2 (300 for Wii U and 60 for game) if I have dozens of diffrent games screaming for attention on platforms that I already own ?

Because if you don't, you won't be allowed in the hardcore gamer treehouse. If that doesn't send a chill down your spine, I can't imagine what would.

- Dengeki stopped reporting Wii & DS software and hardware earlier this year, so no FY14 numbers.
- 3DS software slightly down compared to FY13 H1, probably because MH4 was already out by this point in FY13 H1.
- Huge decline in PS3 & PSP software sales.
- Vita & Wii U software sales up significantly compared to FY13 H1.

So its selling normal, and WiiU has less units sold so its a better attach rate

fatal frame 5 is off to a slow start. wonder what this means for the future of the franchise. wonder if platinum is ashamed they didn't bring it to a real console.

That's the benefit of such low SW sales, the only way is up!

(Caution: logic may in fact be utterly incorrect).

3DS might increase sw wise YOY since it still has MH and PKMN and by now it is not much behind.

I'm surprised by this. I thought the general perception this year was that software sales were improving.

At this point, MH4 was already out; it sold more than 2m in the launch week. 2014 3DS was weaker wrt 2013 3DS during the first half (last year there were DQVII, LM2 and Tomodachi Life, all 1m games; this year, the best selling game of the first half was DQM with 700k - and YW of course). Things have been improving since the launch of YW2 in July, and now with SSB+MH+PKMN the gap should be closed.

I have limited time and money - why would i spent 360$ on for example Bayonetta 2 (300 for Wii U and 60 for game) if I have dozens of diffrent games screaming for attention on platforms that I already own ?

isn't that nintendo trying to make a product more attractive to you? not sure what similar experiences exist on other platforms right now, unless we're counting 2016's scalebound as one.

Dammit Nomura got booted out of FFXV because of Platinum! It's all Platinum's fault!

I'm not sure if you're just acting as per the tag...

But I think the point is these aren't necessities, there are an abundance of experiences on platforms people own, on alternative platforms they don't own as yet, and as such some other form of entertainment will suffice for the majority of people. The person who would play Bayonetta is not necessarily the same person would buy a platform for Bayonetta.

(Notwithstanding this, I agree the veiled portbegging is tired by now, and that the game was saved from non-existence by Nintendo. The game being in existence beats the game not being in existence, regardless of it being a commercial failure. If someone really cares that much about they game then they should by the platform for it, and if you won't do that then like myself, for instance, you clearly don't need the game.)

Great job "hardcore gamers"/console warriors lol ;)

lmao are you serious?

Are you seriously suggesting that people who are don't spend $300 on a console they have very little interest in just to play one game are not hardcore. Please stop with the hyperbole because the harsh reality is that consumers' aren't some kind of charity and I'm sure would rathe invest that money into 5 other great games on platforms they own or put it towards the purchase of a platform that they are more interested in. Just because money is apparently not an issue (even though it is) doesn't mean one should just waste it.

Port begging is hardly tolerated in this forum so I'm guessing you're talking about platform discussions in which case why are you getting so worked up?

focus among certain JRPG-fans shifted to Atelier series and other lolicon niche JRPG instead

Okay now you've totally lost it.

i'm just putting forth the idea that the supposed hardcore bayonetta fan should be the one to either put up or shut up. and because i've personally never been so passionate about a game i was only kinda really liked as to go and bitch when i couldn't play it anymore (like arkham knight not being a wii u game), it surprises me that these people are simultaneously huge fans of the original game and also hugely against the sequel existing at all.

like i actively don't like paywalls or sony's general attitude with the ps4 or the $400 price point. i will most likely buy shining lord michel ancel's exclusive game wild and a ps4 just to play it because holy fuck it's a new game from michel ancel. you're not going to hear any bitching out of me that the dude's still doing high profile work and i'm going to buy the game despite all the things i generally dislike that's happening all around its existence.

and if i didn't care that much, i wouldn't fucking talk about it. like scalebound being an xbox one exclusive.

Good lord, the last year has flown.

I think it'll be up YoY when the fat lady sings, or very very close.

I'm that guy. I'd have bought Bayonetta 2 day one if I were able to, but there's no way I'd (re)buy a whole new console for it. Although I played and really enjoyed the first one, I'm fucking swamped with games at the moment so it's easy enough to just skip it.

FWIW, I weighed up the Bayo 2 situation when I sold my Wii U last year. It was literally the only title on the horizon that I gave the slightest shit about, and it just wasn't enough to justify keeping a console whilst the resale value wasn't rock bottom.

Truly hardcore Bayo fans though, they should just suck it up and buy a Wii U. If you love a game enough, it can be worth hundreds.

you don't have to buy a whole new console for just one game. you can just buy the game.

I don't know, I don't necessarily always find myself particularly passionate about the things/games/etc I comment on. Bayonetta for instance was an enjoyable game, even though I played the shitty version. But it's not some great desire to play it's sequel that has me commenting on it.

I'm very interested in gaming, the game industry, and so on... ergo the forum is generally interesting. But sometimes I just find myself commenting on topics... because they're there.

You could, but it would make very little sense. Unless you love reading manuals, I guess.

i'm just pointing out that you have the ability, unless there's some sort of forcefield or anti-bayonetta 2 disease you've been infected with, where the ability to purchase bayonetta 2 would make you wither up and die.

and i think it's fine to do that if you're just interested in it as a thing in the marketplace, but for two years there's been this air of 'it would have done so much better on other platforms' and anger towards nintendo and platinum as though the alternative to non-existence is some sort of betrayal. it's fucking stupid and unreasonable, and it always has been.

But there is like a lot of levels of passion for a game between complete disinterest upon learning it requires a $300 investment and OMGMICHAELANCELTAKEMYMONEY

The port begging most certainly is out of hand but I don't begrugde any fans of the first game choosing not to buy a Wii u to play it in favor of like 6 other games for the same price.

I should add that I feel we'll see many a LTTP threads for B2 as the Wii U starts to teeter out and assumingly become cheaper. It'll start to hit price points people choose to jump in at for at least among more of the core

and as i've said in other threads, it's okay to be disappointed. i'm not glad that i'll probably be spending $420 for wild. on the other hand there's a huge disconnect between disappointment and constantly bitching about the situation that you've had two years to grow used to. it's that disconnect that makes me think these people are extremely passionate about something, and that it's probably not the game.

No, but just as I wouldn't buy an HD-DVD or a Minidisc, I'm not going to buy a game that I have no means of playing. My conscience already struggles with the fact that I've bought a few Vita games that I'm not terribly interested in, just to 'show support'. It's made no real difference except to empty my wallet.

I will eventually buy a Wii U, Zombi U, and Bayo 2. Way down the line when the whole package will cost around the same as two full price retail games. That way even if I play it over one weekend and then relegate it to the kids bedroom, it'll still be good value for money.

That's very true. I don't understand how anyone can look at the B2 situation and see it as anything other than objectively benefitting consumers. You now have the opportunity to play the sequel that you wouldn't have gotten any other way

That the game exists is definitely great, and Nintendo deserve kudos for stepping in where others said 'fuck that'.

There's more options than just outright buying a new console, like buying cheap and used, borrow from a friend, befriend someone who has it and borrow it, temporarily trade for it, etc. That's just much better than bitching "I don't want a Wii U just for Bayonetta 2" in every opportunity like someone who can't move on from a break-up. Like the old adage, if there's a will, there's a way.

If people are really hardcore fans of Bayonetta franchise, they just need to man up and buy a copy at its day 1 retail price and find ways to play it, because that's a good way to show support to the ones who revived the franchise for the said hardcore fans. If not, they can just simply move on to other games in their systems and quit the port-begging. It's not like Destiny and Watch Dogs came out this year as big titles for non-Nintendo systems.

The generalizing of the so called core gamers is no better than what people say about people about on Nintendo consoles only buying Nintendo games. At least one of the generalizations has some supporting data. So by the same logic, thanks Nintendo gamers for ignoring Bayonetta 2, you bought Mario Kart, but couldn't buy Bayonetta.

About what generalisation are you even talkiing about, I was specifically talking about the port begging, whining part of the self-proclaimed "hardcoregamer" who rather boycott a game than enjoy them simply because it is on a different system.

I also wasn´t talking about what a hardcore gamer is supposed to be, it doesn´t matter, but making obvious that despite some of them putting so much value to the term and about "real gaming" they have some really weird priorities, a piece of plastic seems to come first in the list.

That it would save any particular system I neither said nor intended to mean, but it seems some really got butthurt because I pointed out some present active and vocal fanboyism, which despite hardly beeing quantifiable isn´t helpful either.

Sure but buying the console at all is still going to be a non-insignicant price associated with it. Be that $300 or $125, if it's all to play one game it may not make sense to that individual. Borrowing a console is a nice idea but it's one of those unfortunate things few people seem to do at least in my experience.

I should perhaps add that I in no way am trying to defend the port begging or general negative sentiment towards it as a Wii u exclusive. It's a great thing the game even exists in the first place after all

Generally people don't buy a game for a system they don't own, and I'm not sure if it is called boycotting. To some people WiiU is not attractive that they can't justify the price. I don't think it is that hard to understand.
As for port begging thing however I think they need to stop too. I guess those ppl are either too ignorant or just simply trolling.

You're essentially saying that people are weird for considering what hardware they actually own, before purchasing a game. As though they should just buy every game they fancy, and not worry about whether they can actually play it or not.

That's just fucking nuts from where I'm sitting. That's like me buying Ikaruga for Windows Phone (because I love the game and I'd like a mobile version), but without giving any consideration to the fact that I own an iPhone and as such can't actually do anything with it.

Yeah it´s nice to want things, there always have been exclusives and there´ll always will be. It´s quite obvious where you are coming from and with this mindset it´s obvious why there are so many obtuse port beggings in many threads. I have absolutely no problem for whatever reason someone buys just one system, that´s totally fine actually, but it just gets pathetic that instead of accepting that this way you can´t enjoy every excellent game, the whining, bashing, trolling and portbegging begins.

The idea of buying any system for a single title just seems so absurdly foreign to me. And I suspect it's the same for the wider market simply based on what we see weekly, monthly, yearly in threads like this. I imagine very few titles have that sort of pull with particularly significant sized markets, given the sales information we have.

Cumulative portfolios I can definitely see as creating sufficient purchase intent for the "average consumer." But even then, I doubt that they intend to have all systems under their TV purely for the sake of completeness when each arrives at a sufficiently worthwhile library.

I mean I'm sure people on here own multiple systems, possibly all systems, (it's often touted as if it's some sort of argument against predilections), but I just can't see that being a widespread habit amongst the general populace. These are luxury entertainment devices, for all intents and purposes, not necessities.

I can't play Bayonetta 2 without a Wii U? I better get a Wii U to play Bayonetta 2.
v.
I can't play Bayonetta 2 without a Wii U? Okay, I won't play Bayonetta 2.

I presume the latter is the thought process of an overwhelming majority of people who consume video games, even if in both scenarios the individual may have some degree of interest or purchase intent towards the title itself.

I wish we could generalize about market behaviour. But when I look at my own scattershot reasons for buying gaming hardware, I have trouble drawing any even for myself.

These are my gaming hardware purchases followed by the major reason I bought them:

  • wii: motion controls looked really cool and fun, never owned a gaming machine before.
  • Gaming PC: I now had the money and always wanted a super nice computer for work and other stuff. Gaming was a secondary thing.
  • ps3: bluray.
  • wii u: free with airmile redemption + pleasant memories of wii.
  • 3ds: bought one for wife for animal crossing, bought one for me so I could play with her.
  • Vita: wanted to see oled.
  • ps4: not really sure except that there was a really good deal last nov. $265 after rebates, discount, selling packin Killzone & subtracting value of free year of ps+. I kinda regretted the purchase, although Diablo III makes me feel better about it.
The reasons are pretty capricious, and I'm the first one to admit not a whole lot of thought went into them. Further, aside from Animal Crossing, the actual individual games didn't matter a whole lot.

TL:DR: I don't think you can easily reduce purchasing decisions to a few variables and then make confident generalizations.

I'm not really trying to transfer my own thought process there.

My presumption that the majority of the potential market for a game like Bayonetta isn't willing to necessarily buy a system for Bayonetta is essentially the sales of the franchise now and then.

I suppose the franchise could have entirely collapsed, but that just doesn't seem as likely.

The issue though isn't that preexisting JRPG fans didn't buy those games or systems, but rather that the genre's appeal is not growing when offered to new gamers. Microsoft and Nintendo were of course interested in the results of those games on their own platforms, so what's disappointing is that a significant new audience for those games was not created. What matters isn't what PlayStation owners interested in JRPGs thought about those games, it's about the appeal of those games to Microsoft and Nintendo console owners, who represent new audiences. I agree though that it's nothing to celebrate when games underperform when offered to new audiences, or when stagnation results when there's no competition happening for preexisting audiences, when there's the doubling down on the usual instead of risking creating the unusual. Like now, we don't see Microsoft and Nintendo making more Sakaguchi RPGS since the results probably weren't what they wanted, and Sony, since they don't have to compete for preexisting JRPG fans, does not need to have a hand in creating more unusual JRPGs. So less are made overall.

looking at western markets, somehow i think while 2015 will be an obvious decline (like 2013 -> 2014 for 3ds), it won't be the system falling off a cliff (like 2013 -> 2014 for vita). part of this is that the system will be supported more regularly throughout the year with software (albeit smaller releases than the likes of mario kart and super smash bros.). 2016 should be when the wheels come off.

3m for japan, 5m for us, and 3m for europe sounds right to me.

This sounds unlikely (and the US total is probably a bit low too, but Europe is probably about right lol)
