Castlevania Community Thread | What is a man?!

I really should get into Castlevania HD properly some time. But I guess it's a bit late for a beginner to find someone to play online.
Not sure if it is completly dead but you can still find veterans playing the game. Some even don't mond playing with new people. Hell you can even play with us.

Anyone who has played OoE has to check out these comics.

Aren't I pretty much helpless on higher stages with a new character? I played it for a bit on 360 when it was released (I think I mostly leveled spells with....Charlotte?), but I switched to the PS3 version because of the local play and no Gold and I don't think I played that much apart from trying different characters once.
But of course, I'd love to join when there's an opportunity.

PS3.

I could probably be convinced to start playing again - I never got my characters or equipment up to the levels I had them on XBLA since I only played the PSN version for a few weeks, so it shouldn't be that unbalanced. My free time is very limited these days though.

Forgot to mention here that I finished CV3. Great game over all, and the final boss was good, but the final form was time consuming. Not really hard, just hard to hit.

I can see why some people call this the best oldschool CV, as it is very very good. Minus stage 7 alucard path, screw that stage lol. The falling blocks part is all kinds of bad.

Considering he's no longer with Konami, there's no way this is anything except "Castlevania" (in quotes, with a wink). I'm sure it'll be fun and look / sound a lot like CV, but... not.

As always, the gaming proof is in the gameplay pudding, so... I'll wait until we see some footage of that.

So I started playing Mirror of Fate HD (Steam) yesterday and... well I'm obviously not far into the game, but it's pretty decent so far? Why has this game been panned so much again? I think I like it better than Lords of Shadow... >_>

Mirror of Fate is solid, doesn't quite have enough variety in enemies and obstacles (so many steam spewing pipes!) throughout the game leading to it being a bit repetitive at points but otherwise it's engaging enough for its run time.
There's a few good bosses, combat is a decent adaptation of the LoS style without enemies sponging it up too much, a few nice pace changing puzzle moments, atmospheric castle setting and visuals albeit with the sort of inconsistent frame rate (3DS version here, I guess HD runs fine).
Speaking of consistency that's what MoF has over the other LoS series games, it never gets as high but it doesn't go nearly as low, it remains solid throughout, it is what I dub enjoyably average.

In other news I started a run of CV3 again and holy hell I forgot how hard this game could be, I think I got much worse since my last run over a year ago.

So I've been on a major Castlevania kick lately, for some reason. In the last month, I've finished (all for the first time) Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow and Symphony of the Night. Right now I'm playing Portrait of Ruin (enjoying it so far, for the most part) and then planning to go into Order of Ecclesia after that. I've also been chipping away randomly at CV1, 3 and SCIV on 3DS/Wii U Virtual Console. Would like to finish at least one Classic-vania someday (perhaps even Rondo).

I've never played any of the Castlevania games, but I've watched AVGN's videos forever ago and have been interested in the series since. I'm taking a class that covers vampire mythology and decided there isn't a better time than now to play this series. So, as a newcomer, where should I start, what order should I play the games and which ones should I skip?

What systems do you own?
PS Vita/PSP have Castlevania Chronicles (remake of Castlevania 1) & Dracula X Chronicles (Rondo of Blood and its sequel Symphony of the Night).

I can get access to a PSP. Any others I should play?
For Metroidvania play Symphony of the Night, for Classicvania play Rondo of Blood (or the remake). However, if you only have the chance to play a single game, play Order of Eclesia as in my opinion it mixes both styles wonderfully.

I have assigned Chronicles and DCX in my Vita into the Action folder, meaning to me they are action games. I know they have platforming for the most part but vampire killing whip action kinda takes precedence to me :V
EDIT: Sonia Belmont isn't part of the main continuity correct?

Well, for classicvanias I'd suggest 1,3,4,bloodlines(if possible). For Modernvanias I'd suggest playing Rondo of Blood(I consider this a modernvania), Symphony of The Night, Circle of The Moon, Aria/Dawn of Sorrow, and Order of Ecclesia.

Yes, that is correct. She was taken out of canon.

Another question regarding canon.
Lament of Innocence takes place in 10XX AD, and Dracula 3 NES takes place in 14XX AD correct?
Reading on the Castlevania wiki, Trevor is the first Belmont to kill Dracula, I take it then that Dracula has been dormant for near 300-400 years?

More like being in hiding from the Belmonts while changing his name, then falling in love with Lisa and having Alucard, then finally go all out on Europe after hearing that a mob killed his beloved.

So I'm in the middle of Portrait of Ruin right now. Not sure how much I like it, though I appreciate the attempt at trying something a little different with the Metroidvania structure of its predecessors.
Just finished the fight with the sisters where you have to cast Sanctuary in order to avoid the bad ending. Trying to actually accomplish that was incredibly annoying :/.
Still intending to go on to OoE next.

It's actually not that hard to do. The way I did was to have Charlotte start to cast the spell near the door while you take Jonathon away from her and use Stonewall near the boss til it almost time for it to cast. Then just switch to Charlotte and max out the spell and boom success.

Yay me for not even thinking of that. Oh well, still got it done.
And then proceeded to kick Richter's ass with much less trouble
. Figures.

Still working on PoR, but for what it's worth I finished Castlevania: The Adventure (on 3DS VC). Very bare-bones and not really a noteworthy experience beyond being the first pre-SoTN Castlevania I've actually finished.

I love that game alot mostly for the fact that it was my first Castlevania game I had played. If it weren't for The Adventure, I doubt I would have ever gotten into the series.

I didn't dislike it, and probably would have enjoyed it more had I finished it back around the time it came out. I do vaguely remember playing a friend's copy in grade school and though it was pretty cool, so I guess I always have wanted to get around to that at some point. I did recently pick up Belmont's Revenge on ebay, so I'll give that a shot soon.

That one is a hell of a lot better than The Adventure. Everything is soo much better in it. Plus it has a lot of memorable music that I liked from it.

Welp, I finished PoR's main story yesterday. Did most of the sidequests and part of the Nest of Evil...may go back to that later but I wanted to move on to Order of Ecclesia since I actually bought that in '08 but had it sealed on my shelf until yesterday.

I actually got in 2~3 hours of OoE yesterday, and so far I like it, though it seems quite different and more challenging than its immediate predecessors. I would definitely say that the art looks much better and suits the game very well.

How many versions of Castlevania 1 are there? I watched a speedrun of the arrange mode of Chronicles and the stages and bosses were totally different to the NES ver.

I believe it's about 5 different versions. The other four are Vampire Killer, Super Castlevania IV, the X68000 version, and Chronicles.

I wouldn't call SCIV a version of Castlevania 1. Other than sharing the same story, they are nothing alike. Just like The Castlevania Adventure and Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth.

Wow, how have I missed this thread before? I'm not really that into Castlevania, but I'd like to play more of them. Honestly, the only one I've ever beaten is Aria of Sorrow, and I still play it at least once a year. It just satisfies this strange itch that not many video games can scratch.

I've played many of them, though. I got pretty far in SotN, but... compared to AoS, it just seemed boring to me.
Please don't crucify me.
