Playstation TV Thread: Vita Who?

playstaiontvot0hb8h.png

Released in Japan as the Vita TV last year, the PlayStation TV is a home console version of Playstation Vita handheld. The PSTV can be used to play select Vita games on your television as well as PSP and PS1 games. The system can also be used to extend your PS4 via remote play to other televisions.

•Play your already existing library of digital Vita content on your television with either a DualShock 3 or 4.
•Also compatible with the grand majority of PSP and PS1 games.
•Use the suspend feature to put any single player game on hold until you turn the system back on to continue playing.
•Use remote play to control and play your playstation 4 from afar. The added ethernet port on the Playstation TV will even allow for a more consistent connection than WiFi on the Vita.
•Stream PS3 games from PS Now.

The complete list of supported games can be found here.

*Note this list is out of date. Please look to this Wikipedia page for more accurate information.
*Some games like Soul Sacrifice had patches released in Japan that introduced Playstation TV support that are not on this list so it’s reasonable to expect some, if not all, of those patches to get localized in the future.*

Games such as God Eater 2, Soul Sacrifice (Delta) and Toukiden (Kiwami) look way better than expected. Though you also have games like Ys: Memories in Celceta and Persona 4 Golden that look...how to say it, acceptable? Games that mostly have 2D graphics such as Muramasa and Demon Gaze also look pretty good on the big screen.

PSP games on the other hand...most will look blurry for obvious reason. Dithering in certain games will also become even more noticeable. Also keep in mind that you can't turn the bilinear filtering option on/off while playing PSP games on PlayStation/Vita TV.

Certain Vita games, such as the upcoming Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus and htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary, have in-game actions that require the use of touch screen and/or rear touch panel even when played on PlayStation/Vita TV. In the case of htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary, you HAVE TO use both even though the game can still be played on the big sceen.. So unless you like to fiddle around with L3/R3, moving both sticks and pressing the DS3 trigger buttons to simulate touch screen/rear touch panel, those game are better played on Vita.

But hey, I can play games such as Dissidia Duodecim, Valkyria Chronicles 3 (Note: Valkyria Chronicles 3 was not released in english) and Ys Seven on my TV right away, so I am not complaining!

Parakeetman said:
Personally it works great and as expected the games look good on a larger screen. For example it felt good to play god eater 2 and freedom wars using a controller.

I do use mine to play a lot of psp downloadable titles too, have quite the jrpg library thanks to that. While the graphics are what one would expect from a psp game blown up on a large screen, the ease of use and no hassle makes it worth it.

The one downside with the design is where the game card and mem card are inserted, which is under the vita logo on the top. Also, if you want to stand the system upright you need to buy a special stand for it.

Folk who are interested in a Vita tv the real investment will be with getting a 64gb card. Using ps+ you can transfer saves that way to and from the Vita and Vita TV without having to muck around with swapping memcards which I personally do not recommend doing.

How do I use the Vitas touchscreens on the PSTV?
• Touchpanel on DS4 or click in the sticks as seen in this image. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ddevjfum97lned2/2014-10-01-210549.jpg?dl=0
How does suspend/resume work?
• Either do a short press on the power button or hold the PS button on DS3 for 2 seconds and pick "Standby". NOTE: If the machine is fully powered off it will need to be powered on by pressing the power button on the machine, you will not be able to use a DualShock controller.
Can I run my previous Vita purchases, either digital or physical, on this machine?
• Yes
Can I use my Vita as a controller for games without PSTV support?
• No
Does the system use HDCP protection? Can I capture footage from it?
• The PSTV does use HDCP you will have to use something to get around that if you wish to capture footage from the machine.
Can I switch memory cards between the Vita and the Playstation TV?
• Yes, as long as the PSN account on the machines are the same.
Can I play PS1 games with a DualShock 4?
• All games playable on the system game be controlled with either a DS3 or 4
Does a wired connection have any impact on PS4 remote play?
• Digital Foundry did a report on just that. Ethernet does appear to have a positive impact on remote play. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-hands-on-with-playstation-tv-remote-play
When playing a PSP game can I use the second stick on my DualShock to emulate buttons like the Vita?
• Yes
What Media apps are available on the PSTV?
• Sony Video Unlimited
• More to be confirmed when the system releases. (The Vita had versions of Netflix and Hulu Plus, remains to be seen if they will be available on the PSTV)

Big thanks to Netto-kun and Parakeetman for writing up their impressions and fielding my questions about the device. It was a great help!

just to clarify, I can buy this, instead of another ps4 for my living room, and turn my bedroom ps4 on and play the games through the vita tv on my living room tv right?

If only Sony would let me play my PS3 purchases through PS Now. Also, PS2 game support would have been great as well.

So glad this thing is coming to NA. Picking it up day1. Pretty much persona 4/psp and ps1 jrpgs for me

Not interested at all in remote play. Just primarily to play a lot of the titles on the big screen.

Yes, if you have a home network.

Also, the experience wont be as good as an actual ps4, due to latency and video compression. But it works.

This is perhaps the most pointless device released in a long time in the industry. Originally labeled as Vita TV, it turns out that only plays a handful of Vita titles...ok.
Hopefully it bombs as hard as it did in Japan so we don't see Sony wasting their time and money in a similar product.

I am also in that boat as well but the remote play features are an added bonus.

I'm excited to get through my PS1 and PSP back catalogue but I'm concerned how shitty vita games (mostly FFXV HD) will looks being upscaled twice on a 39" TV.

You should read the op before making ridiculous comments.

Tentatively planning to pick one up.

It's not in any retailer ads for next week though, so I guess i'll walk in next Tuesday and see if it makes it to them.

If not, Amazon it is.

I'm getting one. I don't know why, since I have one OLED Vita and another Vita-2000, I guess I just want the complete collection.

It also acts as a second PlayStation 4 in another room of your home for only $100. Granted you can't use both at the same time, but for that alone I may pick one up eventually.

My plan is to use my spare 32GB memory card on my Playstation TV with my old PSN account and play my old PSP games.

I'll be grabbing this on launch.
Was happy to see every title I still need to play is supported.
So it will be fun to play on the go and then on the TV.

get the fuck out of here with that, and come back when you have a wife and 3 kids all trying to secure tv time

This thing is probably deader than disco the second it arrives since they're trying to break into a crowded streaming device market dominated by Roku, Amazon FireTV, AppleTV, etc.... I'm not sure the PS capability is enough to get a foot-hold. If Sony were smart enough to design this thing as being the ultimate streaming device, easy to root/hack, load XBMC on it easily, etc...then it might have a shot. But knowing Sony it'll be locked down with some proprietary bullshit that gimps its potential. So, taken in that context I doubt it'll end up as good of a streaming device as either my Roku 3s or my FireTV.

With that said, I might pick one up if I can get it at a discount. $100 for the bundle and I'd probably be sold just for the PS4 remote play.

Edit: No USB 3.0, no 1080P, no 5.1 sound...? Ouch. Not good.

Yes, this is the best feature by far but personally I don't feel anything else stands out.

With only one 'big TV' where I live I have to fight for TV time pretty often. Thankfully I have a Vita (linked to my PS4), 3DS and Wii U to address those concerns.

Will possibly pick one up around launch if I can find a good deal.
What are the chances of this ever supporting an external hard drive?

Unfortunately, what stands out to me is no 1080p or 5.1 sound. Its not that I personally *need* these capabilities to justify the purchase, but why in the hell would Sony design a streaming device for 2014/15 that's missing these 2 things? Seems like a no-brainer to keep it on par with the competition. Adding USB 3.0 would have been a nice marketing check-box too. This thing is on life-support before its even released so I would think all the little check-boxes matter.

It us not designed in 2014. It is a repackaged vita. Whatever the vita hardware cannot support, this doesn't. That's the reason. Though I am in no way saying the lack of these features are justified.

If this used SD cards I'd be all over it. But there is no way I'm paying for a bunch of Sony Memory cards. Fuck them.

Yep. Proprietary bullshit. Sony always gimps their devices with these overly expensive memory cards that are useless for other devices. You'd think they would learn by now.

I'm kinda on the fence about it to be honest.I like to play my handheld games on my handheld platforms (i have both a PSP and Vita) and i also have a PS2/PS3 hooked to another smaller tv for PS2/PS1 games both retail and digital. So i don't think i need it.

It's a great deal though for those who don't have a PSP or Vita.

Aw yiss.

Been hungry for one of these ever since the thing was announced. Much as I love the Vita library, I hate to game on the go. I prefer to sit in my comfy chair with my comfy blanket, cat sprawled on my lap and looking at my bigscreen.

I've already got Danganronpa 1 & 2 ready to go. Then Persona 4 Golden, perhaps. God, there's an entire library of titles I missed out on the first pass of the PSP, so anything I can get digitally will be awesome, too.

I'm just disappointed they're not packaging the DS4 in the NA release. They've had ample time to plan for it.

I can see people buying this to play vita games since it is cheaper than buying a vita.

Ok, well that does clarify things and its an obvious point I should have realized before posting. I suppose it would have required too much effort to re-design the video out/sound/IO chips to allow these features. So its somewhat gimped thru no fault of its own.

I think it is great for kids. Even a small memory card can fit dozens of PSOne, psp, and vita indies. The use case for hard-core gamers is limited though.

Is Ys Celceta gonna work?

I wouldn't count on it. It doesn't work on launch, and from what Idea Factory said when I contacted them about Neptunia Re;Birth 1, the JP version being compatible doesn't mean anything if the US/EU publisher doesn't put in the work to make the localised versions compatible (which, incidentally IF won't be doing with Neptunia).

And I think I am out. I will read impressions but it looks like I am going Roku or fire tv

Might buy this in the bargain bin. I would love to have access to the games and it is hard enough to find a real vita in the wild now

so instead of buying another ps4, i just buy one of these and it works on another TV, without a subscription fee or anything?

What's the catch??

XSEED is great with patches from their games, but I think it'll be up to Falcom before anyone else.

I might buy one but the memory card pricing makes me mad. Sony should stop with that crap.
I wonder if I get KZ:M would I play with people who play on Vita. That'd be unfair.

Here is the real price of the Playstation TV in the UK (Everything you need to get going):

1. PS TV - £85
2. Dualshock 4 - £40
3. 64GB Memory Card - £80

= £205 ($329)

You can buy a 500GB PS3 for less.....
