Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition PC Performance/Comparison Thread

So I decided to jump on this, it's only £9.99 here in the UK if you already own Sleeping Dogs on Steam. I'm not expecting any significant differences, but I've taken some screenshots of the first part of both versions.

Apparent differences:

Now I know that a fair few PC gamers are asking what the difference between the Definitive Edition and the original game with an HD textures pack is - here's your answer: we've redone a lot more than just the textures. We've also reworked character faces, added particle and ambient effects such as volumetric fog. Furthermore, the draw distances have been substantially improved and the gameplay has seen a lot of tweaking. Things that might have been too easy or difficult have been rejigged. Additional breakable enviroment objects have also been introduced so you can have more fun tossing enemy thugs around.

On top of all these technical improvements, you've also got the added bonus of almost all previously released DLC packs - that includes outfits, cars and extra story-extending content that amounts to over three hours of additional story gameplay.

NVIDIA Users:
There doesn't seem to be a profile for this version yet, but if you use NVIDIA Inspector to go to the Sleeping Dogs profile and then add 'sdhdship.exe' from the game folder to that profile, it seems to work fine. SLI wouldn't work out of the box for me, but was fine after I made this change.

Benchmarks:

My specs:

i7 4770K @ 4.5Ghz
16GB RAM
SLI GTX 780 x2

Comparisons:

This is only the very first 10-15 minutes of the game, it may not show off the differences that well. I'll provide more later on. Stuff like density and volumetric fog may not be demonstrated all that well. I noticed some new environmental objects that are now partly destructible that flung out paper (it was a filing cabinet), the volumetric fog is apparent too.

Not great comparisons, as I was in a bit of a rush, but here they are. I might take some more precise and exact comparisons later on:

Good thing you said which version it was... because I couldn't tell at all.
And they're selling this for 15€ if you already own it ?

Looks good either way, I'm still tempted to upgrade, just love that game so much.

Are there noticeably more people walking about?

The only noticable difference i'm seeing is in SSAO. Original Shots have a more pronounced SSAO effect than the Definitive Edition.

Otherwise they look almost identical so far.

Nice break down. The differences seem too minimal based on the comparison shots to warrant the 15$ US upgrade price. I'll pick it up when it hits the 5$ range for a replay.

Yep, definitely hard to see in screenshots. Need to have some lined-up mouse over comparisons or video footage.

Was waiting for this thread.

I'm currently not seeing anything that says to me "this is worth money" i mean come on, we used to get this stuff as patches and probably still do by decent developers.

Still believe they were too afraid of doing the same thing with Tomb Raider, i hope this sells like shit, no one should spend money on this cash grab.

Edit: See someone in the comments was smart enough to ask this question, can you disable the FXAA in this version?

Edit 2: I remember people begging the developers for a better draw distance and stuff when this came out, lol.

Good thread, but yeah these screens do not show any difference. If anything, DE looks worse (more blurry for some reason).
But I am sure DE will be better, the draw distance and more peds and cars should be good improvement. Some night time rainy fog will be nice too.

No offence at all, but the only difference to me is that you've paid 10 bucks for the same game. :p It already looked wonderful on pc, this just looks like an easy cash grab.

Yeah, seeing how i already own all the major DLCs (and some minor ones) this doesn't seem worth 15€, though i'm curious about the gameplay tweaks.

I'll wait for one major sale in the future, as an excuse to play the game again.

Do save games transfer over on Steam? Or does it show up as a separate game entirely?

Does this upgrade the original game or is it a seperate title in your library?

Save games don't transfer, separate game in your steam library labelled "Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition".

No offence at all, but the only difference to me is that you've paid 10 bucks for the same game. :p It already looked wonderful on pc, this just looks like an easy cash grab.

Oh of course, I went in fully expecting basically minimal differences. I don't own any of the DLC however and fancied another play through. The differences that are there, which aren't really shown all that well in these screenshots, aren't worth buying it again if you already own the PC version.

The contrast between light and shadow seems less harsh in the Definitive Edition. It's an improvement I'd say but I'm not noticing much else.

I guess you can kinda see the difference in lighting in the first pic comparison, but I don't know if that's due to the new version looking like it has less contrast overall compared to the original.

If you have a PC...and you can run this without a hitch. Then there is no reason whatsoever to buy this.
However, if you've only ever played this on ps360. Then its definitely worth it. I'm sure the draw distance and the HDness of it is worth it. Al though....not worth 60 bucks. Probably 30 or 40.
Why can't they do Deus Ex? Do all three of them in fact.

I really don't see a significant difference in terms of graphic quality. That isn't to say the original looked bad though, I thought it was one of the most impressive games on the PC at the time and had a nice aesthetic.

I can tell that the UI is sharper now, otherwise there seems to be some weird fog that makes ingame stuff blurrier.

Some more comparisons that might show the density difference a bit better.

Is the Benchmark any different? I guess the increased draw/ more people and general upgrades might cause a hit, but unless it's a lot different seems pretty drastic for that hit.

Also forgot to mention, the game supports the Xbox One icons if it detects the Xbox One controller rather than the Xbox 360 ones.

I think you mixed up your screenshots? Now the DE looks more contrasted, and with less pedestrians.

Yep, I did - fixed!

In some shots the DE looks worse? Colors lose vibrancy and there's a weird soft/blurry film over the image in the DE versions.

Weird.

Just checked my brightness settings on the game. I have the Definitive edition version set to '48' brightness, and the original edition set to 50. I played the original version on another monitor so must have changed the brightness on initial set-up to something different (lower, in fact) to cater for that.

So take that into consideration, although the DE images look brighter, they were in fact set to a slightly lower brightness in game.

Is the Benchmark any different? I guess the increased draw/ more people and general upgrades might cause a hit, but unless it's a lot different seems pretty drastic for that hit.

The benchmark seems the same to me, just with increased density, draw distance and volumetric fog wherever it crops up (usually around the floor in the market, in the benchmark at least).

I guess if you haven't played SD then this new edition is fine, but that's a lot of almost-nothing being brought to what is a 2 year old game already. Not worth the upgrade.
