Bethesda is being extremely shady about The Evil Within's PC framerate

Help me understand a bit more. With the debug commands on PC, they don't really know what type of wonky animations will occur when the game is unlocked to 60 through the console?

Exactly, it's as if they don't know what will happen.

It might turn out like NFS Rivals where there was a bug which was tied to the frame rate, so at 60fps the game ran at double the speed. Dark Souls 2 on PC has a similar thing where items break twice as fast when compared to consoles at 30fps.

You fix the bug by upping the tics in the game to what the fps is. The only problem with this if i you get slowdown the game runs like garbage till it passes.

I feel like I should refund the preorder on Steam for the time being. See the reviews and how 60FPS plays out once people start playing with it.

Gstaff said he was playing on PC, and it worked fine, just not officially supported.

He wasn't as clear as I would like however.

This sounds like the position that is becoming more common of 'stray from the defaults at your own risk'. I'd rather have this than have it be locked down of course, because 99% of the time it ends up being fine. If QLOC is indeed doing the port I am much less worried.

My guess is that you will be able to switch from a 30 cap to a 60 cap, and there will be some physics wierdness occasionally and worse performance that they don't want to have to deal with supporting.

Also the 'soap opera effect' being busted out is hilarious.

Too bad QLOC couldn't give a yes or no answer ;p

Edit: looking at their credits on Giant Bomb, they previously handled Polish localizations for Fallout 3 and NV, but no PC ports.

Why are people upset with the ultra wide aspect ratio? I understand the FPS, but the aspect ratio can add to the cinematic feel, just like in films. Complaining about that sounds like people complaining about letterboxed Blu Rays

They also did DMC port, and I think RE4 Ultimate HD Edition.

?

I mean, it seems clear that Tango made the game with specific aspects in mind. I didn't know the PC community is so adamant about certain things regarding options, lol.

With movies it makes sense because everything is pre-determined. If a video game is actively rendering the visuals out, players should have the option to display it however they choose. Rendering should be allowed to be done arbitrarily, to fit any screen sizes possible.

You'll like a 21:9 aspect ratio. Someone with a 1920x1440 monitor won't. Someone playing in portrait mode won't.

what if the game director wants you to see a specific scene a certain way?

So will this run native on my 21:9 monitor with no black bars???

21:9 is different from the actual cinematic aspect ratio which is different from the 2.35 aspect ratio quoted by Bethesda which depending on your "cinematic" display may also be different from the display's actual pixel resolution.

Glad to help.

Ughh debating between buying the almost certainly gimped ps3 version or the likely bad PC port. What do you guys think? I don't really have a top of the line rig, either. I got a 580 and an older amd phenom ii x4 processor.

UPDATE 3: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1508448-the-evil-within-releases-next-week-things-to-know/
What's the status on the game's framerate and aspect ratio?

Shinji Mikami and the team at Tango designed The Evil Within to be played at 30fps and to utilize an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 for all platforms. The team has worked the last four years perfecting the game experience with these settings in mind. For PC players, we’ll provide debug commands on how you can alter the framerate and aspect ratio, but these commands and changes are not recommended or supported and we suggest everyone play the game as it was designed and intended for the best experience.

Does the game support 4K resolution?

Yes. The engine can go even higher if you’ve got a monitor and video card that supports it.

Can I disable the letterboxing?

The letterboxing (a 2:35:1 aspect ratio) is used for gameplay purposes, as certain elements display in the black areas of the screen. On PC, you can turn off the bars and force the game to render full-screen. However this option is not supported. We’re keeping the ability to turn off bars as a console-only command that we will share at launch

How can I turn on the debug console?

There will be a command-line option to enable the console. More at launch.

What can I do with the debug console?

Gameplay cheats, as well as advanced camera controls will all be available via console commands. More to come!

The way I intended to play the game is with frames preferably at 60 or higher per second, thanks. Will what for frame unlocking console commands.

Then consumers who prefer to not have their options restricted have a completely reasonable excuse for not buying the game.

With movies it's a literal limitation of the technology. With video games it's an artificial limitation enforced on the user. Ideally, players would have the option to experience it how the game director intended, or however the user feels is best for their set up - be it 21:9, 16:9, 41:9, 9:16, 4:3 or any other aspect ratio a person desires to play at.

I'd wait to see how the PC port pans out. It'll probably be the better choice in the end

id Tech 5 supports 60fps by default, and while it doesn't play well with framerates beyond that (which is why id patched out the cvar that allowed people to uncap the framerate in Rage PC), I'd be surprised if Tango actually gutted the engine to the extent that it now only supports up to 30fps without any funny business. That's too much work for no actual gain -- arbitrarily limiting the engine to 30fps doesn't break anything in Rage and Wolf14 (otherwise they wouldn't be able to support vsync).

Just found out that to even play this crap at 1080p you need a 4gb card? Worst current gen port so far? Goddamn. Almost feel like just ordering a PS4 now and cancelling the PC version. I didn't buy a GTX 780 in November for this shit.

Don't buy either. Just RENT the PS3 version or something. Don't support lower quality products by buying them outright.

I was hoping to fully utilize my new 980 on this game, but I'm not going to take a gamble. I cancelled my preorder on GMG, and I'm just going to wait for the reviews and the PC community to make further comment, before I make a more informed decision.

In the meantime I think I'll go buy Shadow of Mordor.

This should be your default action on all sales. I swear, the industry seems to be getting shittier by the day.

Yeah, it generally is. I only preordered it at the time because GMG tends to have those "X amount off!" if you preorder deals, and in Australia we tend to pay a lot more for games here too. :/ But eh, I'd rather pay more and at least KNOW the game is worth buying on the PC.

I have to ask but do all Beth games require a PC version? Because if they're making a frankestein port, why bother making one?

The PC market is too big to ignore for big publishers, least of all bethesda. Skyrim alone passed 6 million on PC.

We don't know anything about the PC port outside of system requirements
.

I thought they'd confirmed that the PC version had black bars and a 30 fps lock? and that removing either of those is not supported or recommended in big capital letters?

I'm saying as far as how it performs.

Even going through the hassle of trying to fix problems that even the devs would have been able to fix?

I don't know what this means, Wolfenstein and Dishonored both ran very well on my computer. We don't know if the PC version of this game has problems.

Welp, there goes any hope of me getting this thing day one. The thought of playing a horror game at 30 FPS is far scarier to me than anything they could put in the game itself. Seriously, why on earth would you want to play something that you hope tricks you into thinking it's really happening at 30fps? No way am I buying this until 60fps is confirmed or a fan made patch comes out.

60fps is confirmed optional, did you even read the OP?

Ah, ok. Hoping it runs well...Tech 5 has not been kind to me in the past.

Good lord. There's enough irony here to last me the week.

Some people say a low FPS is cinematic too, y'know. Lol.

I did type in "if", did I not?

At least you have the console game with better aa, shadow etc....but with same black bars and fps lock. But you can tweak it to add more option ...it's a shame developpers that port the game didn't do it themselves as it seems to requiere little efforts.

Anyone running the game on PC yet ?

The 1080p / 4Go of VRAM thing worries me. Can't believe my i5 and 660Ti will not be running this game at max settings. Hope it's simply bizarre recommended specs.

What does that even mean, it seems to require little effort?

Are you saying you think porting a game to a different platform is easy, or what?

Sometimes I wonder. Maybe Bethesda should just release a program that shows an options screen that allows everyone to set everything to "Ultra" followed by a screen that showed your system that says "YOUR SYSTEM IS RUNNING MAXXED OUT!!!! 120FPS!" They could change the name of the title and release it again ever 6 months and PC gamers could run it once more and sit back and smile: "Yeah, MAXXED OUT. Alright!"

I think some people would enjoy that more than videogames.

I play games almost exclusively on PC. And I appreciate a full roster of video settings. But the amount of energy a lot of "PC Gamers" put towards voicing outrage at "unoptimized ports" (i.e. "My system can't run this at all settings maxed therefore bad!") or over a lack of options is pretty extreme.

I would honestly not be surprised at all if there were a very, very large group of PC gamers who spend far more time talking about options screens/optimizations of any given game than they ever do about the game itself. If console gamers often over simplify the value of higher fidelity settings, PC gamers often do the opposite.

This is a very narrow point-of-view in regards to an audience. PC owners like myself have to spend a lot of money investing on such hardware: We build the components, install them, troubleshoot them and get everything up-to-date to make sure it runs as optimally as possible. I don't think it's fair we get such unwarranted criticism because we don't sit idly by and wait for half-arsed attempts and wait for people like Durante to do the developers job.
