Now the main stream media are reporting on #gamergate. BBC news had a small piece on their website about the corrupt relationship between the media and publishers.

Are you referring to this article about misogyny in gaming which is primarily about the harassment of women with a brief mention of corruption but surrounds it with people dismissing it.

For me, I remember back in the day when most of the writing you'd find about games came in the form of score breakdowns like: Sound: 3/5, Controls: 4/5, whatever. It wasn't about appearing 'grown up' I just wanted something more interesting.

So I'm glad to see more content of a different sort in general, things not at all in that form, stuff like Extra Credits and Tropes vs Women. And though this means some of that stuff I might hugely disagree with, by supporting it in general, I also get more of the stuff I really like.

Does that make sense?

Yeah, it does, but not so much as in terms of "artistic merits", as I don't see how that's anymore "artistic" (versus the more "traditional" forms that exist today or even the awkward old-school approach you describe). We could say criticism has expanded into more forms you value (although when this happened is questionable, it's just more visible with the internet of today, e.g., YouTube), but again, the idea that this could be inherently "artistic" (or makes games more understandable as "artistic") is all too vague, based on a foundation I don't think is there or agreed upon. The idea that there is simply more diverse criticism is a lot more easier to understand and that this is a good thing does make sense to me.

It's hard for me to separate the prestige of "art" from the desire to want to be considered (or even favorably invoking) "art", as what art is rarely agreed upon aside from the granting of that prestige. So when someone (or apparently a lot of people) said they want their games to be treated as art, I think it's may have been true they wanted that prestige, not necessarily "more diverse types of criticism" (like a feminist critique). Now one can say those are inherently linked, but only because of one's own personal idea of what art or artistic merits are. I imagine when someone said games were art already, they didn't think that had to be revealed or supported through some new way to look at games - it was already true. I think what ShockingAlberto proposes (as others have proposed), "but gamers wanted games to be art!", has enough vagueness in the exact subjects (gamers, art, and criticism) and their relationship with each other that it rubs me the wrong way. Additionally, I have always disliked idea that desire to be art (which I think is most defined by its prestige) and felt like it was a distracting way to process games and their value.

Assange is just fishing for supporters. Arguably, that's what all the questionable "third parties" are doing, but rarely this obviously lol. I mean Baldwin and Milo have clearly spent a lot of time thinking about and antagonizing their opponents, so they could very well be sincere in some respect. Assange probably has given literally zero thought to the opponents of GamerGate or establishing a real connection between GamerGate's woes and his much more pressing world politics; his tweet of "look at this much more important shit that has nothing to do with you" shows this well. The responses entertaining the idea that GamerGate leads to that is actually pretty funny, almost cute.

Assange posts from it at least some of the time. It's tacit approval by him at the very least.

I'm not sure how astroturfing applies here. Do you mean something else? That is typically when monied interests try to fake the appearance of a grass roots movement. Unfortunately GG actually is a grass roots movement.

Yeah sorry, highjacking is the better word. Gamergate as grassroot campaign is on the other hand debatable.

So apparently the speech got canceled because Utah's concealed carry laws meant that there could be guns in the audience, according to law enforcement.

Guys... this gives me an idea... we need to write a gaming script that will utterly make #GG think we are on their side but in a dastardly plot twist we show the hero to actually be a bad ass female.

We can't make Vince McMahon the solution for EVERY problem we have.

This is not the first time the Wikileaks account has commented on this. Way back when Reddit mods supposedly "shadowbanned" (I miss the term hellban) some dude for mentioning GG in an AMA (which apparently did not happen at all), that Twitter account did the standard kneejerk "booooo this is obviously censorship!!!!" thing.

Man, I am a pretty hardcore critic of Sarkeesian, but this is ludicrous. And the worst part is that it only validates all the dumb stuff Sarkeesian says. I can't take it.

Did you know Halo invented the FPS?
Yuck, now this will only encourage the troll to keep making more and more outrageous threats any time she speaks. So annoying

How hard is it for police to trace back the threats? I never get why they never arrest a few guys to set an example, the rest of terrorist wannabe will die off.

Sarkeesian asked school officials whether firearms would be allowed in the auditorium where she was scheduled to speak. USU officials replied that, in accordance with Utah law, anyone with a valid concealed carry permit would be able to enter with the gun, according to a statement released by the university.

Do Utah gun laws really apply to private property? Can't the University just state no weapons and search individuals on entry?

America's gun culture is fucked in the head.

Yeehaw 2nd amendment

I really want one of my old professors to comment on this. He writes a libertarian blog and most of his scholarship has been in the First Amendment and Second Amendment. When one conflicts with the other, what do you choose? (assuming you support the Second Amendment at all)

8chan post suggesting the enemies of GamerGate will sacrifice one of their own to destroy the ethics movement that's trying to save video games.

Fucking amazing.

See now there is an anti-GG: #StopGamerGate2014

It may be folly, but there is a banner now for those that really dislike GamerGate.

I was skimming that Kotaku subreddit to see what these people were talking about and I found an actually articulate post about why someone would decide to be pro-GG.
http://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2j1sdl/long_indiedev_post_why_im_progg/

Never heard of "Game" before, and I'm wondering who they spoke to seeing as people have no problem with "That Dragon, Cancer," the story of a father feeling with the impending death of his son.

I think this is more the reason they stay out than being too scared to debate as others suggested before.

Ever since I was about 5 I've had chronic nightmares. When I was 13 I developed chronic depression from being unable to sleep. After my dealings with the game industry, it became a lot worse. I needed an outlet. I have a family history of depression and suicide. 'Game' was created out of all of these issues. We wanted to tell a story about an abused young girl dealing with depression and family issues. Real world stuff. Real life problems.

During Gamergate we received absolutely zero support from the anti-Gamergate crowd. Nadda. Ziltch. Not only that, we were told writing about suicide and depression is unethical. It's a trigger. It's offensive. You're not allowed. These same people said I didn't deserve to live due to my lack of support for an anti-gamer woman. Another prominent anti-GG figure told me that nothing I did mattered, because I'm a white male. That I've never had to think about my decisions, never had challenges in my life.

While researching both sides of Gamergate, I was sent messages and emails telling me I should kill myself. After seeing how I was treated, and how her friends were treated, my wife jumped into the fray for #NotYourShield. Anti-GG types called her a whore, a slut that only wanted men's attention, a princess, a 'white male in disguise'. Told she actually hates women, and that she was a disgusting human being. We were both demonized. It really didn't matter that my wife was a woman, or a minority. It didn't matter that she helped make 'Game', a game about a young girl with depression. It didn't matter that we're both socially progressive. The only thing that mattered was towing the line.

To push the hypocrisy even further, she was not the only woman that worked on 'Game'. There were two others, one of whom handled game testing. 'Game' was her first game-dev related job, she put it on her resume, and we helped her 'break into the industry' as a full-time artist in St. Louis. They're LITERALLY FIGHTING AGAINST THE PEOPLE HELPING FEMALE GAME DEVS.

I was bullied a lot of my younger life. For being a nerd, for being a gamer, I even had a bully for being a scrawny white kid. The current environment seems to mirror that part of my life. Most of these people do not care about female developers. They don't care about social issues, or helping mental illness. They don't care about minorities or the disabled. They only care about themselves.

That's a horribly offensive, insensitive and ignorant statement. Very surprised to see such short sighted and rude comment about one groups rights in a thread about defending another groups rights. Clearly you are far from educated on the topic and I advise you to open a history book.

Not joking at all.

Yes, but that costs a LOT of money and i'm sure the school doesn't have the budget to hire private security for a 2-3 hour lecture.

I can't see how this could be impinging on the First Amendment.

Again I do not believe the place can be considered "private" when it comes to these laws considering how it is funded.

Plus you will step on a whole other hornets nest if you try to ban guns for even 2-3 hours in a place that allows open carry. Not only would you have the #GG crazies but you will have the gun crazies teaming up with them.

Video Gamers Are Having A Bizarre Debate Over Whether Sending Death Threats To Women Is A Serious Issue Or Not

http://www.businessinsider.com/gamergate-death-threats-2014-10#ixzz3GApbDBFG

I thought this title might be a little much but then I read the comments. Holy shit people. How. How.

These women are publicity hounds who use threats to get attention time and again. Notice how many article they get written about them every time they pull this mess? Run out my home is the new line but why is it when pro #GamerGate people get harassed the press doesn't care?

Smh

As much as I want to get riled up about US gun laws, in the interest of safety for Anita, it's probably for the best. It saddens me deeply though, because, as others have mentioned, this is a scare tactic that can be employed again. This will be paraded about as a 'victory' for those who set about orchestrating this shit.

That's the most shitty part about this. I hope this doesn't discourage her in any way. What she does matters now more than it ever has before.

But the comment said that anyone with a valid Conceal Carry permit could enter with a gun. Which to me read like if the University prohibited weapons, it doesn't matter as the gun law trumps that.

I know that LW is the codename for the women that Gamergate targets (seriously, how can you not realize that you're a lunatic at that point) but what do the letters actually stand for?

"Literally Who"

From the phase when they were still mostly devoted to harassing Zoe Quinn, but didn't want to use her name.

REMEMBER, THOUGH, THIS IS ABOUT ETHICS.

I've been gaming for a long time and Gamergate is the stupidest fucking thing I have ever witnessed in relation to video games. Not only the "MRA" but the "SJW"as well. Both sides, from Anita stankonia who makes every issue appear from nothing to the ones protesting her shit. Since when did one person's reaction to something especially one as unimportant as hers cause such an outrage. Do people become outraged with female authors from books like Twilight & 50 shades of grey for basically objectifying men? Fuck this, I've never been so disappointed in the gaming community

actually no the worst part is that a woman was forced out of talking because an evil bigot threatened to murder people
