Can't help but wonder how much stronger PS4 sales would be with all major publishers fully behind it. PS1 and PS2 didn't have to contend with the split in publisher focus.

So the PS4 sold just under 570k? What a monster month. Hopefully some kind soul will leak the Xbone numbers. Sony is really destroying the competition and no matter what they do they can't keep up.

I guess Destiny selling better at retail on Xbox isn't too much of a suprise considering bundles aren't counted. I would like to know the actual split though.

Everyone who bought Destiny PS3 digitally received Destiny PS4 for free, digitally. None of these sales were considered in these NPD numbers.

I suspect that if the Sunset Overdrive bundle fails to keep X1 hardware competitive, Microsoft is gonna have to scrap their current bundle strategy (new free game with console purchase) and go to the next tactic on their list - a straight up $49-99 price drop on base H/W MSRP.

Destiny PS4 bundle was at #18 two weeks out from release, peaked at #4 and is still in the 20s. SO bundle is at #96, it might reach the top 20, but in no way is going to push hardware too much.

Also the Destiny bundle sat in the top 20 with the non-bundle, the XB1 bundles tend to displace the other SKUs.

I'm curious to see just how aggressive Microsoft is going to get now. It seems they have to cut the price by at least $50 if they hope to compete on the NPD.

I assume dem Destiny Xbone sales are including the "freebies" in the hardware bundles. Still impressive that it sold best there instead of the PS4. I guess Sony's marketing deal helped to increase awareness on all platform, regardless.

And it has to be said: lol@pach. I still like the guy, though. :p

Agreed on all counts.

Yes, though for a new IP without a gigantic marketing budget that's pretty solid still.

It'd put it in the same ballpark as Dishonored.

A 2-3 million LTD isn't unfeasible, with some potential upside if it has good legs.
It was also only available for one day of the month. The fact that it charted at all is pretty impressive IMO. After the incredible word of mouth and reviews it could end up pretty high up the charts this month.

These NPD software sales seem so narrow and mostly useless.

  • NPD doesn't include bundles
  • NPD doesn't include digital sales (which is quickly gaining on physical)

It's like Nielsen ratings on TV. Highly debatable "numbers", good for debate, show broad sweeping trends, but other than that useless.

I'd rather see total sales for Destiny on PS4 and XB1 and combined. I'd rather see actual hardware sales, US and Global.

I guess we make due... in the meantime I love this generation of consoles.

I bought Destiny on PS4 digitally. Pretty much everyone I know did the same. Was the first game I ever bought on PSN when a physical copy was also available.

Would love to know what the digital breakdown looks like.

Hahah, I just saw via the comments on the VentureBeat article that Kevin Dent is somehow claiming that Destiny sales worldwide are greater on the xbone than the PS4.

This is despite that worldwide press release from Activision and Sony.

Nobody can help him.
What a sad life he must have....

Great news, I foresee MS going all in on a stupidly good Black Friday bundle, and I'm gonna get it.

It's already happening in parts of Europe with pretty crazy bundles by some retailers.
Holiday season will be really great for people who want another console.

So far, their bundling strat at $399 has failed to move the needle vs the competition (Titanfall, Madden, FH2, September free game) and i think the data clearly points out that it's time to move on and try something new.

a $349 bundle with AC:U or MCC should definitely get them back in the hunt but the question is whether or not microsoft is willing to spend that much ($100+) for a single user acquisition.

We don't know how it would have performed without the bundles. Bundles are most likely what is allowing them to get what scraps they are currently able to get.

Of course without knowing what XBone sales are and how far behind the PS4 it was... But it must have been an expensive promotion for MS that seemed to have (going off their PR) failed to do all that much. I wonder if they feel it was worth doing in the end. Though they had to do something I guess. How much money they made/lost for doing it though.

Destiny's platform breakdown might give us a little insight into November.

If it means that a good deal of Halo's market has already bought in, there are troubled waters ahead for the Xbox One.

Seriously though, MS will have to market the Master Chief Collection like crazy. That's their last chance at the top spot in a long time, unless they have a pricedrop lined up.

They have already started. The MMC us seriously a criminal value. The amount of content and enhancement they have made for 60 dollars is absolutely amazing. IMO setting the standard to what Remasters and game collections should look like. Nothing can touch this release in regards to value and awesomeness.

.

Plus, they have to fight against the 'movie tie-in' stigma, although not using LOTR in the title was probably smart.

Surprised Destiny sold more on XB1, though I suppose I shouldn't be.

Not a surprise. FPS's always does well on Xbox consoles compared to Playstation consoles.

Now something like Japanese 3rd party games, Grand Theft Auto, as well as genres like RPG's, & Fighting games on the other hand...

Very true. I still don't think anyone here thought the Xbox One version of the game would have done better though. The PS4 marketing was huge and the PS4 userbase is huge too obviously.

I remember many saying it would be close but no one saying the Xbox One version would still outsell it.

It probably did not outsell. That's the point... o O

Is not useless because of TV Ads.

True, valid point. The one area it makes sense as a live viewer tally. But as a successful show it ignores DVR, On-Demand and streaming services which vastly underestimates actual viewership, especially in younger audiences (<40).

That's what got me. Soccer's turning a corner in NA, it seems. Feels like it was never this high on the chart.

And now they got ANOTHER bundle with a game I don't want. Who I gotta suck off for a standalone white in NA?

Soccer is on espn usually 3, 4 times a week now in the US. Soccer plays are routinely featured on SC top ten as well as Sports Nation. It's not just MLS either. They show international friendlies, etc. I got to watch Ronaldo score that last second goal for Portugal the other day.

I'd def say soccer turned a corner in the US in the past couple of years.

They are. Absolutely.

  • NPD doesn't include bundles
  • NPD doesn't include digital sales (which is quickly gaining on physical)

Also don't call out number of titles launched.

It's like Nielsen ratings on TV. Highly debatable "numbers", good for debate, show broad sweeping trends, but other than that useless.

Ehhhhhhhhh they're a little more useful, but you're right. Broad trends sure. But useless. Good for trivia questions, maybe some long range planning. But other than that, useless.

I'd rather see total sales for Destiny on PS4 and XB1 and combined. I'd rather see actual hardware sales, US and Global.

So would every video game executive. For that matter, I'd rather see ten million dollars in my backyard pool full of liquid awesome. I'll have that pool and those moneys before you have total sales across platforms, digital and physical, US and global. Much sooner.

I guess we make due... in the meantime I love this generation of consoles.

So does the industry... it makes due and it also loves this gen of consoles.

Yeah, Kevin Dent will do things like that, and he'll do it with an incredibly tiring sense of mock-surprise.

"HOLY SHIT GUYS, HOLY SHIT. I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS. THIS IS... WOW."

Practically every NPD.

What's the matter of posts like this?

Is this supposed to be funny? o_O

I mean I get it, they sold alot, but why is there so much...let's call it tension...between the two consoles?

That's supposed to be a good sign for everyone isn't it?

As a Halo fan literally everyone on my friends list save for one owns/plays/enjoys the game. Maybe there is more than one type of Halo fan?

Of course. I wasn't talking on behalf of Halo fans - or anyone other than myself. My apologies if I gave off that impression.

I'm not interested in this tangent because it is beside my main point. I find a lot of the same reasons that people abandoned Halo 4 present in Destiny, and because of that I don't see the population of the latter being sustained. Lack of engaging multiplayer (no community is forming around it, the meta is essentially bare) and widespread complaints about the story and the missions within. The loot causing more frustration than happiness.

All of this to circle back to the notion I was responding to; that the middling reviews don't matter because Destiny sold gangbusters anyways. I find it presumptive to say as much based on the parallels I see between Destiny, and other games that had similar problems (e.g, Halo 4).

I agree with this. It could be another Titanfall situation where most potential buyers already own an Xbox One.
