First Septembers:

PS4 - 538k
Wii - 501k
PS2 - 344k
XBone - 284k
X360 - 259k
Xbox - 173k
Gamecube - 167k
PS3 - 119k
Wii U - 39k
I'm not sure if you posted this just because or to make an implication, but I don't think first September sales is a strong indication of future success. It relies more on software released that month than the holiday season, November and December.

PS4 numbers are really underwhelming for a market leader.

Nah.

Highest September results ever achieved:

PS2 - 532K (September 2002)

PS3 - 492K (September 2009)

Wii - 687K (September 2008)

So I would be wary of any predictions that approach or exceed 700K.

PS4's September 2014 (numbers are in email tags, quote to see, no chartz lurkers allowed)

SCEA has reason to celebrate. How on earth is that "underwhelming"?

Sorry I made a typo. It was actually 30.5k lol.

You made another typo! Wii U's first September was (numbers are in email tags, quote to see, no chartz lurkers allowed)

At this point last year, the little Powerhouse™ That Could was running 400K behind the Big Bad PSP, and was able to sell well enough in the last quarter to win by a nose. This year the hole is deeper. Hopefully we'll still get an exciting finish for the year.

      3DS 2014 PSP 2008 NDS 2008

My "I think they're pretty bad" was a reply to the "in any other september Xbox one sales are great", not about the PS4.

I'm benchmarking against the second best selling consoles and overall market sales.
At which point we move into the Wii discussion much earlier in the thread than normal.

If you're benchmarking against the Wii to begin with, you're comparing very disparate market segments. If you're then benchmarking the XBO against "the second best selling console" last generation, namely the 360, then you're benchmarking it against the best selling system targeted at the same segments these new systems are targeting.

If you think that 820K HW units is a low expectation for a non-holiday month for two systems targeting the core market segment... then I don't really know how realistic your expectations are considering there are only like ten instances of non-holiday months in which that was exceeded in the decade between 2002 and 2012. I'd say your expectations are unrealistically high, not that everyone else's are a low bar.

Also, I should probably clarify, I consider the home and handheld markets relatively distinct, so I should probably write in erratum - the home console market had good hardware sales, the handheld market continues to be terrible.

MS should do well starting the end of October -> November. Sunset Overdrive Bundle, AC: Unity Bundle, MCC and CoD Bundle.

Also, there aren't that many games coming out in Oct (besides that ones that already have), so that should be quite interesting.

I don't think thet are doing bad, but I don't feel they are doing "a fantastic job", the gap keeps rising, and I'm not sure the next months is gonna change that significantly.

Oh? have entered this stage of the NPd threads now? What number would not be underwhelming to you?
Well, if it had sold 600k, then it would be nicely ahead of Wii at this stage, and not be second place.

Because you know what second place is right? It's for losers. That's what the PS4 is.

It will keep them in the game, but I feel that PS4 will roll on and continue to surpass (so much momentum with the PS4).
I'm not sure MS will win another NPD this gen (yeah, big call and almost "Patcheresque")

They will surely win at least one month for the rest of this gen, but yea, they have a long way to go to catch up. Don't think it will be a 360/PS3 type situation, but don't think they will ever top the PS4. Unless Sony just really starts dropping balls all over the place.

The Destiny PS4 bundle did really fucking well for a non-holiday bundle launch.

Activision + Sony really hit it out of the park this time.
Here's hoping that COD deal with Microsoft expires soon. 1 month DLC delay on the much larger install base isn't doing Activision any favors.

But it wasn't supply constrained in months 10 or 11 and it still did worse then the GameCube adjusted month chart.

I'd have to see actual numbers, but it looks like it's catching up during that period, which would indicate it was outselling it on a monthly basis at that point. But you're right, it hadn't caught up yet.

I don't know what plan Nintendo has for their next portable, but I hope it's a good one.

WOW, I Haven't read any of the thread but,

Xbox Destiny outsould PS4

I will now leave the thread and not read any subsequent responses

^^ Sound about right??

EDIT:
lol out "soul"d.
I think I'll leave that typo actually.

That is pretty brave honestly. Who knows Gears 4 might hit in a month PS4 doesn't have any major releases or something like that. Month to month sales for predictions years from now is pretty risky territory when it comes to predictions.

I honestly think that MS's current lust with "holiday season" is part of the problem.

Rather than releasing games throughout the more quiet months of the year more consistently, their lineup are pretty heavy in 2H, where all the big multiplats are also being released.

Not saying there's nothing in other months, but they do like their holiday lineup to be significantly much more dense than other parts of the year.

XB1 is doing great in NA.

The problem is they are severely under-performing in Europe and RoW. In Spain they had a 20m euro marketing budget and only managed to sell ~50k units.

I'm really interested in what the end game is for MS. If they keep doing insane deals/marketing just to keep up with the PS4, how are they ever making any of that money back?

How about the first 10 months? I'd say its safe to assume PS4 is the market leader and won't be losing that position any time soon.

i hope it's conceptually more like the game boy like the ds was, and less conceptually like the psp like the 3ds was.

I don't know I think a more gameboy like device would be doing even worse. I do think the two tier approach of launching 2 models at once like the new 3DS is doing is a good place to start though. They are completely fucked on pricing though. There are now a lot of 99 dollar devices that will have more non gaming features than the 3DS successor likely will.
