Media Create Sales: Week 42, 2014 (Oct 13 - Oct 19)

How do we know this? Excluding download cards, because those are counted in the Famitsu numbers.
It's above Tomodachi Collection: New Life in the charts, and awhile back I subtracted Media Create figures from Nintendo figures and came up with a figure I don't recall but it was something like 150,000.

Are download cards counted towards that number?

I used Media Create.

And...

Oh!
That chart has four options, I see. The one displayed whenever you load that page is the Current one, I assume. What are the other three?
Latest, all-time then the last two are some review bullshit. You only need the first two!

Its BARELY a drop and probably less significant when counting digital. I think it's possible that 4 or more likely, 4G just didn't garner the same excitement by fans and so the series has stalled a bit. It can still grow, maybe with MH5.
It appears to be barely a drop but I think it's just going to be more front loaded which will put it comfortably below 4 in the long run. The series peaked with P3rd and I personally can't see growth beyond that. Expansions aren't usually more popular than the original games and thus shouldn't garner the same level of excitement. My interpretation is that this was clouded previously by new people still checking in on the series as it expanded. Now that the series has seemingly peaked we're back to reality.

Pretty sure the next game to cause a hardware sales bump is Smash Bros., and from what the past has shown these bumps are rather very small.

Captain Toad better have some batteries for his headlights, because he will end up at the bottom of sales charts.

Heh, it comes out the same day as the two MK8 bundle ;)

Sure, it won't reach 100k (or even 50k) or anything, but there will be a significant bump. But the weeks before that... it's gonna be ugly.

Other than 3DS the numbers are REALLY awful for everything. Wow.

Wii U has only dropped since the release of the highly-rated Bayonetta 2.

Seriously Nintendo. Keep up the good work with 3DS in Japan but for the Wii U please shift your focus towards the west, where people still care (somewhat).

Woof! Japan is a depressing place when it comes to consumerism.

And Nintendo better hope supply constraints are all that's holding the 3DS sales back.

If one of the biggest titles of the year, a hardware revision, the most new/popular software releases available and 4 various price points and still can't keep up with last year when stocks become freely available then I can't see how the 3DS is going to tide them over for the next couple of years until a new handheld and prop up the Wii U all by itself.

The Nintendo figures are the total figures. Total minus Media Create equal digital.
Ok, i see, so download cards should be included. I guess its hard to know how much more sales it has over the Famitsu numbers in that case (if that was the arguement, regarding if MH4G has passed 2 million in sales or not. If it was just about download sales in general, then download cards should also be counted of course :)).

Famitsu will give us digital sales for October anyway, so we should wait until then.
That is true, i forgot about that.

Oh right! Yeah that should help a bit.

Not going to be pretty for Wii U this holiday. And it's only going down from there...

The race is on. Which console will reach a milestone first? Wii U to 2 million, or PS3 to 10 million?

Japan rejected Bayo 2 like it was a bad skin graft. Horrible times we live in.

Pretty crummy sales outside of the top 5 all round, actually. Those holds for MK8, MK7, Animal Crossing and Yoshi's Island would seem really impressive, but its a few thousand per week. You'd expect those kinds of numbers, but they wouldn't normally be in the Top 20. Sad state of the Japanese game market.

I don't really get the Wii U sales.. The arguably biggest console game of the year in Japan is releasing soon with SSB and we have a solid three Nintendo titles with Mario Kart, Zelda and Bayonetta already available.

But the Wii U is just scraping by. Not as horrible as last year, but nonetheless horrible. I don't really get why the PS4 is selling better. The content doesn't seem better catered to the Japanese crowd and the games that release are not selling that much (Destiny aside). Don't get me wrong, it's not doing good either, but I don't get it. What 'drives' the sales of the PS4 in Japan in comparison to the Wii U if it isn't price or games?

Is the marketing more aggressive? Is there no trust in Nintendos consoles left?

PS3 has already 10 Mio :)

It's not surprising at all, nobody ever expected 4G to outsell the original. Times are different, 4G is a sequel and they are usually frontloaded.

It should have no trouble getting close to 3 million though, which is a nice result. This time, they are also releasing the game in the west.
I think it's pyrrhic victory but a "victory" nonetheless for some, so they like to point out that MH4 didn't do quite as well as the last installment on PSP.

Potential probably, the PS4 has a bright future ahead both in terms of first and third parties.

2015 looks packed.

Also, Bayonetta is a niche game, Zelda is a musou and SSB just came out on 3DS.

The Wii U had a surprisingly decent holiday last year right? Maybe it can repeat it this year with bundles and Smash, etc.

Nearing 5k right about now is worrying to say the least though...

You're guaranteed to have the regular, usual suspect of 3rd party games for the PS4, regardless. So the outlook is rosy. But the same can't be said for the WiiU. Add in a crap ass software schedule and you have what you see.
Having a "regular" release of AA games will do wonders but expect crappy sales with bumps from here on out.

There's just nothing to keep it afloat between Nintendo's big releases and the games that do get released in between are rejected (i.e. Bayonetta 2).

Having a "regular" release of AA games will do wonders but expect crappy sales with bumps from here on out.
Ehhh, we'll see. I don't think it'll be rosy, but you never know. Consoles are dead... not sure if PS4 will change that even with a good line up.

I wonder why Nintendo didnt release a Mario Kart 8 bundle earlier in Japan.

Their only source of revenue is games, so it made more sense for them to try to make earnings off of Mario Kart separately than to take the loss of revenue through bundling.

They had other games that had largely stopped selling that they could bundle too for the value proposition at the same time, leading to less revenue loss.

To maximize its sales as a stand-alone title.

That is true, but i'm pretty sure i've seen bundles in Japan before that are priced at the exact same price as the things cost when buying them seperately. I guess there are some loss when including the Wii controller, the plastic wheel and the hat though.

Poor man's Pokemon doe!

Present new IP: "reskin, not original, meh"
Present old IP, new direction: " want new IPs"

What you really want is a game that simply put appeals to you, not some arbitrarily defined concept of "originality"

Specify exactly what you are looking for instead. I'm personally sad we likely won't get something new on the level of Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania SotN, Devil May Cry, Vanquish again. Idk how you'd define this category, perhaps 3rd party Japanese home console AAA. The Wonderful 101 is up there too, but the shit sales didn't do much to help the situation. Indies will never be able to replicate the distinct Japanese style, even though the games can indirectly match them in terms of quality in their own way.

Nintendo is still Nintendo for me though, a nice mix of perfection and originality. Looking forward to Captain Toad and Splatoon mainly in terms of brand new experiences. Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. and Tropical Freeze perfected their respective genres imo. I really enjoyed Kid Icarus Uprising, Pushmo and Nintendo Land (already released new IPs).
