Media Create Sales: Week 42, 2014 (Oct 13 - Oct 19)

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Chaos Rings III did about as well as I expected, though I too am surprised SE made such a large shipment (seems like it was around 30-40k). It launched simultaneously on iOS and Android in Japan (I think it is the first game to ever do this?), both of which were at 2800 yen instead of ~5000 yen for the Vita version. The Vita version includes the previous three games as well, but most people probably don't care too much about that as they've been on mobile for years. I've read a lot of comments from Japanese who complained about the price difference between the Vita version and the mobile versions, and I think if they sold just CRIII (without the previous three games) for 2800 yen, it would have done a lot better. Anyway, it will be interesting to see its digital sales on Vita, I'm curious whether or not it will sell well there.

CRIII is a rare game in this day and age: a masterfully crafted and enjoyable JRPG similar to those made in the mid-late 90s, without fan service/panty shots. I'd like to see such games supported in Japan, but so far it is not looking very promising. I'm hoping it will do better on iOS/Android, at least.

Err, actually, let's just say Android won't help in this, given what we know so far... http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=135422791&postcount=182

Citation needed. And don't say previous generations. They don't apply any longer

we can look at the vita and see what happened when games started hitting for a sony platform. i think the ps4 will make it to at least 6m in japan. the wii u will probably come to a halt at 3m if not a little more.

right now i think the ps4 is dormant. or maybe essentially supported by a lot of the old super hardcore japanese xbox 360 market for the time being.

I didn´t expect much from Chaos Rings 3 but I´m really surprised that it ended up selling this bad.
Just wondering, what were you expecting and what was the reason that you expected much(?) more?

And they also won't affect the PS4's baseline in a meaningful way.
What is the PS4 baseline? ~5k?

I believe they will
I think the important thing is that other games are being released around the same time. Those game alone probably wont keep the PS4 sales up for a very long time unless there are other games being released in a more steady flow.

Nice, Xbox One with a good lead over PSP. I bet the sales will explode past the competition when Dust Phantom arrives.

Vita is disappointing. I wonder where it's final LTD will sit

Wii U sales are poor. Wonder what Smash will do for it considering Smash 3DS's success. PS4 will likely be joining Wii U in the lower slums soon I think?

XB1 is somehow even more irrelevant than the 360 or the OG Xbox. Wonder if it will get to 100k LTD

3DS seems decent this week although I'm not familiar with past sales curves for new revisions of Nintendo handhelds.

Driveclub is a complete bomba in Japan while PS4 Destiny will probably end up with double the LTD of Bayonetta 2, strange times.

Honestly there aren't even that many outside of Japan.

It's not a genre in the best of health.

It's hard to judge that by Media Create or NPD numbers though. ''serious'' racing games sell probably something like 80% of their total sales in Europe and we get numbers so rarely from PAL territories. In Germany for example Driveclub debuted at number one despite the PS+ version being cheaper and the game being plagued by online problems.

Vita isn't getting to 6m either though.

this is very likely the vita's peak year in japan (for the us that was 2012), like how it was for the 3ds last year. from now on you are going to see lower hardware sales and smaller software sales. developers are going from ps3/psv to psv/ps4 right now too. eventually it will just be ps4 or ps4/mobile.
C'mon, don't say that. People can only depend on the YoY vacuum for Vita sales.

These YOY comparisons are interesting for statistic reasons but completely miss the full picture. Maybe Vita will have a YOY rise. So what? It will also have terrible hw sales fot the last 3 months of the year and wiil enter 2015 with zero hype.

Same for 3DS. It had great September and October last year but at the important last 2 months it run out of fuel. First half of 2014 was disappointing as expected.

We have a similar scenario for 3DS from some lately. "Maybe it will have a good year end but it will be way down YOY". It should be obvious what's more important for future analysis.

I've not even been using it for statistical analysis. It's mostly just been for fun. I knew the system was going to get slaughtered in the final quarter of the year because it's going up against revision + God Eater LE + VitaTV + Final Fantasy LE from last year, but I was wondering whether it would pull ahead by enough earlier in the year to make things even out. It's certainly looking like that's not going to be the case any more.

Out of genuine interest, what is releasing on 3DS in Q1/Q2 that is expected to keep momentum going? Last year, though not particularly strong by general standards, Vita at least had a March with a fair few releases and SRW & SAO in April to carry on momentum (which, though boosted by a hardware revision, wasn't exactly based in any long-term software sales).

I know Legend of Legacy is scheduled for early next year and I assume Xenoblade is coming too, but is the assumption that the console will keep selling regardless of new releases due to Monster Hunter/Smash/Pokemon/Youkai Watch legs?

I caved and ordered a new 3ds LL. I was mad at Nintendo for releasing a revision so soon. But when I checked the order date of my past LL purchase on Nippon yasan it said 2012(damn time flies).

Every other platform but 3ds is basically dead in Japan, such a shame Sony dropped the ball with vita.
You consider "soon" over 3 years for the revision? The system will be lucky to last the more or less standard 5 year cycle.

Dragon quest:Heros
Metal Gear Solid V
Persona 5
Yakuza 0
Resident Evil: Revelations

I know they don't have a release date but i think they will come in the second half of the year

All 1st half, maybe MGSV will be fall 2015.
We don't know much of PS4's late 2015 schedule. Expect Hot Shots and Tekken 7 for now. FFXV......maybe.

WiiUs problem is the same problem that every home console after the Snes had - they need to get their 3rd party support in order, Nintendo alone isnt and wont be enough - no matter how cool the next gimmick is.

I sound like a broken record every time but NCL needs to get mid tier support for their hardware. Those games complement Nintendo's own IPs so well. It'll help plug the atrocious holes in their release schedule.

I don't see the PS4 being anything like the Vita and even if the baseline does increase in a meaningful way at some point I don't see it being because of those five titles.
I'm bearish on the PS4 overall if for no other reason than I'm not convinced Japanese devs really have it in them to push the system even if they wanted to.

Like the PS4's line-up isn't bad, but it's also largely on the PS3 and Vita, and doesn't offer much of an upgrade in ambition over what's come before.

The system's outlook for the next year or so is like a 1080p tv adapter for what you can get elsewhere in a market that, while responding to games on newer systems, does not take these upgrades to heart anywhere near as much as the West.

I don't think most publishers can afford to make games on the system that offer the type of experience you could never get before, and many can not even offer major upgrades to their crossgen games, so the incentive lowers again.

On top of that, even if we take the system's biggest games and assume it will get exclusives in each of those franchises at some point, how many people does that add up to in the end?

When series like Tales or Star Ocean went on a system people didn't want to buy, while it helped move units, it also resulted in large sales declines for the series in question. Now, there are certainly bigger series than that coming to the PS4, but some of those series have been on notable decline paths. Perhaps most prominently, Final Fantasy has fallen every iteration of late, and it's their biggest seller by far.

We also have strong precedent for decline just looking at the Wii U. Nintendo had even bigger franchises than Sony and third party console vendors did, yet that's not done much to prevent their tremendous fall.

This is before we take into account that when developers give up on PS3 and Vita, they're not guaranteed to make their games exclusive to PS4, or even necessarily keep all their series going given how many series have died in the prior generation and seen their resources shifted elsewhere, often not to be replaced.

So while I do think Sony has rounded up about as much support as they could feasibly get, even optimistically I'm having trouble seeing it do much better than the Vita with the potential to fall notably short of that.

It's there now. The PS4 is comatose yet people are going on like it's perfectly fine.

Chaos Rings III sold what I expected but clearly not what SE expected.

However, it looks like it outsold its mobile counterparts quite handily...
SE going full Vita development now is an inevitability. Mobile had a good run.

I am curious how Japan would receive a Nintendo handheld/console hybrid.

I don't think Animal Crossing actually has buyers, I think it just assimilates random people who walk to close to it on the shelf. It is like the Borg only cuter.

Like hopeful Wii U owners now and in the past, PS4 owners are probably of the attitude that a single game or selection of games will be enough to turn the tide and save the PS4.

To be honest, I think we're beyond that. Japan needs saving, not the console.

I was thinking sub-5k when I said that but I really don't think people in Media Creates threads are thinking the PS4 is selling "perfectly fine" and I'm not sure where you got the notion from?

How much do folks think the tax hikes hurt entertainment sales in general this year (in JP obviously)? Are there actual numbers about that? Also, wouldn't the announcement of the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundles have already started to take effect? It was announced 7 days ago iirc. The #s from last year were so low because of the announcement of the Wii Party U bundle for example.

Well, I don't know about Japan but I think it'll be a bad idea. Nintendo will essentially be mixing the little good they have (handheld) with the bad & toxic (console). The idea that they should be working on "one" idea is sound but it should be more of an OS platform + multiple hardware rather than one hybrid.

this is a good point, but the vita also never received dragon quest or a new proper final fantasy game. the vita will probably wind up at about 4-5m in sales despite that.

I apologize in advance for singleling out your comment when in fact there are others far worse in this very thread.

I definitely expect a price cut next year. That could have a lasting effect (though not a big one unless more games come out--price changes are force multipliers, they can't carry an unwanted system).).

It's mind boggling how Sony's continued to drop the ball with Minecraft in Japan. Especially after how well the Japanese retail release of Terrania did on PS3/Vita.

And in the rest of the world. A Minecraft Vita bundle (priced a bit less than the BL2 bundle) could have done wonders for the Vita...

Though Minecraft and the Phantasy Star Nova titles should surely help the Vita this holiday season. As to Chaos Rings, any murmurings of a Western Release?

Comgnet Final Pre-Order Points

Reve Unitia (3DS) - 72pt [???]
Abyss (3DS) - 137pt [68,218]

Innocence (PSV) - 67 [47,312]
Hearts (PSV) - 58 [48,178]

Certainly no Puzzle & Dragons Z!

PS4 release schedule update!
I wonder if they are planning a price cut too. Meh, I'll just wait for the Slim redesign. Type-0 should be on PC dammit.

It is never one game or even a set of games. PS4'S only real (not pie in the sky) hope is just a bunch of little bumps. WIIU gets two or three solid bumps a year, but what is needed is a bump every freaking month. We have no idea what Q3 and Q4 has in store, but at least Q1 and Q2 has those bumps. That is more than can be said for all of 2014 outside of Destiny and (maaaàaaaaaaby?????) GTAV next month.

Tekken 7 might not even be 2015.

The arcade release is early 2015 iirc so it could come out late 2015.

Cool. I didn't know Nintendo had the charts on their site. Thanks.

All-time ranking from Nintendo with Famitsu download estimates:

1. Animal Crossing New Leaf
2. Pokémon AR Searcher
3. Monster Hunter 4 - 290k (missing nov-13)
4. Pokemon Battle Trozei - 166k (missing aug-14, sep-14. oct-14).
...
8. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
...
15. Monster Hunter 4G
...
18. Tomodachi Collection
19. Kirby Fighters Z - 44k (missing sep-14, oct-14)

Do we know if Nintendo counts download cards in these rankings? Even including download cards, Kirby Fighters Z is at 55k. It seems low, but maybe it has sold a lot in september and october.

I didn't know either.

Going by Mpl90's message about everything in the list being over 100k,
we're going to realize very soon how accurate are Famitsu download estimates (Kirby will tell us).

I guess the margin of error of download estimates could be higher than retail sales.

Out of genuine interest, what is releasing on 3DS in Q1/Q2 that is expected to keep momentum going? There are some important games coming. Bravely Second, Devil Survivor 2: Break Record, Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai Deluxe, The Great Ace Attorney, PoPoLoCrois Monogatari, Kenka Bancho 6. I would assume the first months of 2015 will be calmer as in 2014, though.

I am curious how Japan would receive a Nintendo handheld/console hybrid.

I don't think Animal Crossing actually has buyers, I think it just assimilates random people who walk to close to it on the shelf. It is like the Borg only cuter.

AC definitely had buyers wanting the game when it was released.

Fair list. A lot of mid-tier software in there, which is what hasn't been massively prominent on 3DS. Are the games all scheduled for the first quarter?

(And is Mirai Deluxe expected to do well? I thought it was just a repackaging of the version of Mirai 2 that the west is getting).
