Valve has admitted the system is severely flawed for a long time now, they are working on a system of self publishing, but we all know how long it takes for Valve to move along.

Yep lol. If Steam was more self-publisher friendly we could see a FLOOD of stuff on steam.

I don't get how that changes the fact that this thread is nothing but glorified port begging.

Agree with this. It's been denied. The "news" part of this thread is over.

If precedent means that port begging Sunset Overdrive is fine, then it basically means that the rule doesn't apply to anything MS in general. The precedent won't disappear with this thread. I'd rather not see a load of "PC please" every time any Xbox exclusive is discussed, simply because some other stuff got ported in the past.

Here's the short of it.

Port begging is extremely annoying when, say, a thread is posted about a new gameplay demo for <exclusive game Z> or what-have-you, and replies to said thread are littered with people whining that the game isn't coming to their platform of choice instead of talking about the thread topic.

This thread is about an ad saying Sunset overdrive is coming to PC. Mistaken or not, considering recent history with Xbox One games, having a discussion about the possibility of a PC release, is fine. Other speculation is basically harmless.

Carry on. Thread still can be closed, of course, if people show they don't know how to carry themselves.

I would give it a few. Several SO threads go just like this and it takes ages for them to eventually be closed.

The mods are very active just by looking at the bans that have been handed. The thread will get closed if it turns extremely sour or if the discussion has run its course - which is probably the main reason this one will get closed if it does - since the majority of posts are going around in circles. Don't be too hasty.

Edit: Beaten

I was thinking of buying an xbox one next week, but now I guess that I won't be. Exclusive halo collection and sunset overdrive would have pushed me over the edge, but it is better to wait and see if sunset overdrive will be announced for pc at this point.
That's why if this was a mistake made by the paper its a huge one, people will just wait it out which means a loss sale for the Xbox one lol

What's wrong with xbox one?

This game get shat on in almost every thread. All of a sudden, PC makes the game great and wanted.

Because, unlike XO, you can play it in 1080p 60fps+ on PC. Also games age better on PC, meaning in 4 years time, when 4K is standard, you wont be stuck playing it at 900p.

As an XB1, PS4, and PC owner I don't think it really matters if it comes out on PC down the line. Those who are willing to wait a year to play a PC port more than likely never had the intention of picking up an XB1 for the game anyways. It will have run its course on the XB and those who own the platform will have moved on to other games. An inevitable PC release would just help the developer and potentially strengthen the IP for future releases. PC releases only threaten the "exclusivity" of a product if simultaneously released in my opinion. Also, I would imagine that the vast majority of console gamers opt to play most of their games on their consoles, otherwise most multiplat PC released games would have a substantial impact on their console release sales numbers.

[Edit] Goddammit: edit for beat.

But yeah, Xbone exclusives have had a long and illustrious history of denying that they're getting a PC version, and then getting a PC version. Assume Sunset Overdrive is getting a PC port in the new year.
Long illustrious history based on two occurrences? I suppose it could happen again but I wouldn't describe those two instances as a definite on every 3rd party exclusive since even those have nebulous circumstances around them.

Not at all. People are upset that a game may come to a platform other than their own. That's being a console warrior.
Which I don't really see anything wrong with. It's natural to want justification for buying a console for what it has to offer exclusively.

If crying about a thread is what you'd like to do then by all means.

you're crying about my posts, so none of us are really winners, are we?

So it's allowed because of the ad itself and not because two XB1 games went to PC, right? I can understand the former, but the latter is going to be a headache if that's an allowance to port beg.

How do you mistakenly add "PC" to an advertisement?

Someone explain that to me

Perhaps just re-using marketing assets. Someone was mistaken and used the "Only on Xbox and PC" logo for this.

I don't think it's a matter of Port begging, it's people excited that they won't have to spend $400 to play a particular game at a lower resolution. With that said, the track history with these type of 'business strategies and language' from Microsoft, that I can see people now waiting (even if it never does comes to PC) only because of similar events in the past.

Like Halo: Spartan assault?

Didn't it sell like 40m on Steam though?

This is ridiculous.

Very much so. It was unforeseen situation, hardly something that would ever warrant someone's firing or the studio being shut down.

This is not ridiculous.

I don't know. We're seeing the same thing that happened with XBL on the 360 during the early years. I'm sure Sony will begin to invest heavily into PSN soon enough, it's not something that can be done overnight.

In fact, it's going to get much worse with Christmas just around the corner. It will eventually get better, will be interesting to see how Sony responds.

You can say this about any exclusive though, doesn't mean we're entitled to it.

You don't. But you can mistakenly upload the wrong version of the ad. The one that would've been uploaded once both versions are out.

Huge companies make oversights all the time.

This would be perfectly feasible to chock up as a mistake. The person handling the art department may not be familiar with the games the company releases at all.

The only reason we can justify so much discussion on the subject is due to all of the former exclusives coming to PC recently.

I disagree. Mistakes happen in ads all the time. Just look at the ad board at a Target or Walmart and ad corrections happen almost weekly. These companies are massive and I am sure miscommunication is not uncommon.

PC version will not affect Xbox One owners. I think the main problem is the more Xbox One exclusives that come out on PC the more people will think future Xbox One exclusives will also have a PC version. Which would make people think that they don't need to invest in a Xbox One as a PC version of all it's exclusives come out a year down the line. So far we have Ryse, Dead Rising 3, and if Sunset OverDrive is another one. Then Xbox One will just be a exclusive Halo/Forza/Gears box again.

Sweet, now show me what the integrated TV signal looks like in that $100 linux receiver. Oh, wait...

What? Mediaportal works with your Internet connection like every other vod, the TV tuner is good, for a few bucks more you get a twin tuner.

The only X1 exclusive I'd really want to get a PC port is the new Phantom Dust, and that's mostly for preservation. If the game flops like the original, the community will at least be able to keep their own servers going pretty easily.

i have a perhaps unrelated question but...

why was it important to Insomniac to keep rights to the IP, if they would never release the game on other systems anyways?

It reminds me of the "Mass Effect/Bioshock also went multiplat" debate that has been going on for years. Yet, very few did the research in how they actually became/were multiplatform.

If they're confident it's a mistake, they can say "We have no plans to release Sunset Overdrive for PC anytime soon, and if it's released in the next two years, we'll give you a complimentary PC copy".

Otherwise I'm assuming it's some Capcom double dip tactics or bought 6 month exclusivity (like PVZGW for PC) till proven otherwise.

Hyperbole. Very few people will just wait it out. The merits of owning an XB1 don't hinge on one game. The "system" is a culmination of games and features and offers a different experience than the PC, regardless of the games that may or may not end up on the PC.

As stated many times in this thread, Microsoft wants to do more for PC gaming and a delayed release for the PC helps Microsoft's other platform and helps the developer. It's a "win-win".

Merchandising? If it's not a success, they have the option to continue the IP elsewhere? Bigger share of the revenue pie? Because they like to own things?

Not that simple really. Like, a mistaken ad about Mario coming to PSVita would be closed immediately, because there's no basis to think it could happen. It's a combination of things.

Considering the IP situation with Insomniac, the history with Ryse and DR3, and that moderators are currently free to keep eyes here, if people want to talk about the topic in this thread, there's not a lot of reason to close it.

Frankly, most of this thread has been fine to be honest, outside of a few poor post decisions already taken care of.

Saving on cost I could understand but I don't see why having a higher resolution would make the gameplay any better. FPS? Okay but the game was designed to work a certain way on the console.

They own merchandising rights, iirc. it would allow them to make plushies, shirts, energy drinks, etc. I could see them having a lot of tie-ins.

I don't think that game will flop, because it's not going to be AAA game. I could see the game price model something like HeartStone

Eh, really? I don't see this being the kind of game that makes big money on merchandise. I guess you would do it, in the off chance it did blow up and become the next big thing? So if it does, you have the rights to it? Could just be something that is a mart decision regardless.

I dispute that "all" heavily. Let's go through your list, shall we?
- GTA: a franchise which started on PC, and is now a Moloch infinitely consuming production values. I'll give you this one, in its current form.
- AC: you can have this one as well!
- CoD: originally already a successful PC franchise, and its core draw does not require massive budgets.
- Battlefield: same as above.
- Borderlands: it's basically a loot game, a genre which thrives on PC.
- Bioshock: a worse version of System Shock 2, which was a PC game.
- Mass Effect: these don't sell in numbers that would make me think the require the extended console base.
- Dragon Age: the first one of these was in development as a PC exclusive for the longest time. After the second one, built from the ground up as a multiplatform title, I think most agree that going back to the "shell" which was the first game would be better.
- Souls games: DS2 probably sold almost as well on PC as it did on PS3, and that's with a late port and 2 console versions available.
You don't think I know this? I've been on PC since 94 with a Gateway my parents bought, cow spotted box and all. It's irrelevant what their origins are. What does that have to do with anything? The current state of the market, industry, sales, is what matters.

Has Insomniac put out an official statement ? I saw jstevenson's post, and some evidence that it wasn't coming to PC , but why don't they just clear it up?

Not having the IP rights would also restrict their options with a sequel I guess. We'd probably have got Metropolis Street Racer 2 and Demon's Souls 2 instead of Project Gotham and Dark Souls if the studios owned the rights to the IP. In those two situations, it all worked out well... in others such as Call of Duty versus Titanfall, not having the original name can create an uphill battle to attract your previous audience.

Plus, I think we'd all have preferred a new Megaman, than Mighty No. 9 :p

Think they posted something on twitter. Wouldn't really matter if they did though going by Xbox exclusive history.

You're probably right and I might be brain washed by reading "will wait for the pc" version so much inregards to xbox games, I was thinking people would be more inclined to wait for it to go on PC to get it cheaper and to have a better resolution/fps all that yadda? but who
knows I'm just in it to play it if there was chance to get some games like red dead on PC i'd be all for it.

If Microsoft were to port it anywhere the Xbox 360 would make the most sense.

If it wouldn't run good on 360, this would hurt the IP.

And Windows is still a Microsoft OS, so what's the problem? They could use X1 games to promote Windows 10. Xbox could become a service, that is not bound to a specific hardware.

Sunset one has all caps.

So no copy pasterino.

I wasn't implying they literally lifted it from that particular advertisement. I'm talking about the phrasing that, in marketing, will be approved and part of official material. I used that as an example of where that phrasing has been used in the past.

While not "BIG" there are other MS owned IP games on steam and the list keeps on growing, they have no issue putting games out on it.

Are Fable and State of Decay "BIG" or even MS owned IPs? Also does it really matter, I mean, is Sunset Overdrive "BIG"? I would imagine they are big ie, more meaningful to different audiences, and I am pretty certain that the audiences on Xbox One and PC are not the same along with different games appealing to each audience to varying degrees
