TIE / X-Wing should be doable with a game pad, no?

I used to play with a gravis gamepad occasionally, but you needed a keyboard to hit all the extra stuff.

Actually, my flight stick was a 2-button stick, so I kind of always needed the keyboard. X-Wing had a ton of controls, although luckily most weren't necessary.

That game was so fucking cool when it launched. I still have my copy, boxed.

Oh yeah I meant gamepad + keyboard. Just that the flight physics were arcadey enough for a gamepad stick.

Seriously this has to be like one of the biggest megatons of the year for me.

Retro PC gaming has been on fire this last week. First, Appogee/3D Realms comes back and dumps their backlog, now LucasArts games are being sold again, and it looks like Valkyria Chronicles is getting a PC release.

Epic Megagames has to step up now and release their old stuff.

OH Yeah! Tie Fighter!

Buying this one, I have no joystick but I am still going to buy this one. That is how much I loved this one back then.

So best SCUMM game, go!

I always liked the ones with a bigger focus on serious scenarios as opposed to slapstick. My favorites were The Dig, Beneath a Steel Sky, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Full Throttle, although I liked almost all of them. I remember, as a kid, literally belly laughing at Sam & Max.

GOG's servers are going to explode tomorrow.

That's a great slate of announcement titles - variety of genres and franchises.

Will be buying x-wing and tie fighter for sure. I hope they turned off the shitty copy protection that you had to use the manual for...

Truly a great day for GOG, hope we get day of the tentacle and monkey island 3 soon.

Are those games compatible with modern OSs like W7/W8 ?
Have they been tested and QA'd on modern hardware ?

never played the X-Wing/TIE games. finally?

You're in for such a treat. I honestly think the games hold up great. The actual 3D engine is really primitive - especially in vanilla X-Wing, but there is so much high quality 2D art everywhere that it balances out. The gameplay is like Wing Commander, or, if you're unfamiliar with that, a bit like the Rogue Squadron games. There's really not much like it these days as the space sim genre died off.

Maybe when enough people buy tie-fighter/x-wing Disney is going to consider to make a new one...

Yes, they will have been. When they come out check out the "Works on:" section as seen here on the right hand side:

http://www.gog.com/game/wasteland_2_digital_classic_edition

X wing, TIE Fighter & Monkey Island Special Edition will probably be windows only and FATE and Sam&Max are stated to work on Mac & Linux (probably since they'll run under scummvm), and KOTOR will also run on Linux apparently.

Seriously, between this and Apogee's announcements and Valkyria Chronicles, this is a huge backlog of PC games that are pretty much unlike the typical "FPS/RTS/MMO" schtick you see people claim. You have mode 7 racing games (wacky wheels), lots of action run n gun (duke nukem, hocus pocus), some platformers (Commander Keen), story-driven adventure games (the SCUMM games), action flight sim (X Wing/Tie Fighter), SRPG (VC), etc.

Great time for PC gamers, even greater time for console gamers getting into PC gaming for the first time who never got to play these games.

Day of the Tentacle, bar none.

Secret of Monkey Island and Sam and Max were also good (although of the two I only finished the former), but Day of the Tentacle will probably forever have a special place in my heart as my favorite point-and-click ever made.

Lucasarts sat on Star Wars space sims for a fucking decade before Chris Roberts pulled the rug out from under them, and now the genre of kings is making a comeback without them. God bless crowdfunding.

Give me The Dig! Wish that would get a remaster like those monkey island games got.

I liked The Dig because it was the only SCUMM game that was really, really serious. Not the best story or anything, but it was very different because it had really no humor. It almost felt like a Stephen King book adapted into a game for kids.

Actually, it's possible that GOG's prepped the Windows versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter for modern OSes, which is an even better idea than throwing them in DOSBox.

Praying for Mac compatibility....
Nothing happening there for a while, but Linux users will be happy to know they can play KotOR. It's easy to set up a VM, download the DOSBox launcher through it, and then move the necessary files back to native OSX for that end.

Huh, I wonder if they're doing iMUSE on DOSBox, nothing on Windows, or iMUSE on Windows if that's possible.
