Media Create Sales: Week 44, 2014 (Oct 27 - Nov 02)

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Definitely seems like Nintendo's 3DS output is coming to a close. What do we have announced as of now?

Majora's Mask
Xenoblade
Steam

I'm sure we will get a couple of more games announce though

I'm expecting Rhythm Heaven, one of these days.

And, to be honest, I surely wasn't expecting Majora's Mask in Spring. Absolutely. I thought it would have been an Holiday 2015 title.

P.S. Watching the Japanese Direct...did Iwata just say that Ace Combat supports Amiibo?

And yeah, this is the week of "Wut" announcements for 3DS, between Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble+ (?!?) and Atelier Rorona (?!?!?)

Why should Nintendo's support come to a close?

They have released only one Kirby game for 3DS; one non-original Donkey Kong game; Fire Emblem: Awakening 2 seems a safe bet, as well as Rhythm Heaven. There's the Great Detective Pikachu game and I assume more Pokémon games are on the way. Then, Mario; Mario sports; likely amiibo game; wasn't Nintendo working on two Metroid games?

So does Atelier being on Nintendo consoles once again means they're testing what sales could look like in a Vita-less future?
Or just getting more sales everywhere since Iwata might have convinced 3rd parties the 3DS audience is large and varied enough?
I dont think it has anything to do with Vita or Iwata. I think its just the company itself that explores more ways to make more money.

4DS in 2015, believe.
I think there will be more 3DS games from Nintendo in 2015, but its hard to know if they have already started software developement for the 4DS.

They are all in the first half of the year. There will definitely be more games than that in 2015. It likely is winding down though.

Also I am very surprised at the third party announcements for 3DS recently. I would have actually expected Koei Tecmo to encourage Gust to concentrate on just the Sony platforms.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that having Majora's Mask 3D in the spring could point to a possible E3 announcement of the 4DS (even if it's releasing in 2016).
But they certainly will have something for the holidays next year. Maybe a 3rd version for X/Y? A new Fire Emblem would also make sense.
2015 will be hell for psv

The fact that it even made it to 2015 after that start is crazy, but yeah the system is pretty much headed for some terrible sales next year.

Wow what an awful week for new releases.

3DS seems to be declining faster than I would've thought but what do I know. Vita seems to be losing what little ground it had made for itself. I have no idea what will happen with PS4 but it's probably never going to be truly good compared to previous consoles. Wii U really needs those bundles or are people waiting on the bundles? XB1 is still dead. Same as it ever was

Oh and Metro Redux did far better than I thought it would do

Third parties are making a bunch of cross-platform PS4/Vita games that will probably sell more Vita than PS4 copies in Japan, but yeah, it's not looking good with no first party development anymore.

Third party just made niche games that attract the same crowd ,they already have an vita, and Nintendo first pary didn save wii u so how sony first party games will save Vita we know Nintendo first party are more system sellers then Playstation one

i hope NIntendo learned the lesson of not announcing new systems too early. Think they should anounce the 3DS succesor in 2016, the same year it's releasing. Let's consider that there are people in western territories annoyed because the New 3DS isn't available for them to purchase and they are witholding buying the cuarrent models even when there are games on the platform that interests them. Repeating the same type of situation in a system that is showing heavy decline in sales is not wise.

yeah they're focusing on recouping the money invested into 3ds and wii u, would be a wiser move to delay the announcement as long as they can.

Pretty shoddy all around (3DS evergreen titles aside), but I find the Wii U numbers in particular to be depressing. Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 sank like stones, and hardware is in the shitter. Sure, Smash will provide a temporary boost, but I doubt it will last very long, and the way things are going it's questionable if any supporting software outside MK8 will benefit from it. It's shocking how ambivalent Japan is about consoles in general this generation, even in light of smart phone gaming. You'd think there would at least be a consistent enthusiast audience, but the depressingly common sub-10k (5k!) numbers paint a picture of gamers just not giving a fuck.

Bad times, bad times.

Pretty meh-to-shittastic, week all around.
Why should Nintendo's support come to a close?
It would probably depend on when they plan to launch a successor; as if they are then I'd guess projects for that system would need to be initiated at some point.

Although, I've no idea what the typical handheld dev cycle is these days and whether it's expected to grow with the next cycle, in the same way home systems have seen time/cost/resource budgets inflate.

MH4U is just an upgraded version and nobody here was expecting to sell more than the fourth entry.

People were expecting less than the current sales, in fact.

Even so, it's not that Nintendo didn't support their handheld hardware after the successor came in.

Is it just me or do folks think that MH4U probably won't catch up to YW2 in sales (not even including 2.5)?

wouldn't it be more appropriate to compare sales of MH4U to YW2.5 since MH4U is an expansion of MH4 and YW2.5 is an expansion of YW2?

I'm still wondering how the hell did projects like Bravely Second and FF Explorers got greenlit. It doesn't fit in their strategy for the last few years.

850 for #50 in dengaki is probably the lowest I noticed it getting. Or maybe im mistaken, usually seemed to be at least 1200/1300. Not that its that much a difference. But seeing several of the top 50 under 1k units is weird to look at.

I'm still wondering how the hell did projects like Bravely Second and FF Explorers got greenlit. It doesn't fit in their strategy for the last few years.

On the bottom image, "mid-sized 1 billion yen projects" I assume refers to handheld games of that sort.

They just focus on the ones they think have the possibility for major return instead of making a huge swath of them.

Like conceptually, while not overly likely, Final Fantasy Explorers could appeal to the 4+ million person Monster Hunter Audience, and Bravely Default could appeal to the people who bought 2-3 million copies of the Final Fantasy 3 remake. Dragon Quest Monsters also loosely goes for the same audience that's buying Pokemon and now Yokai Watch by the truckloads, and has the benefit of setting up a giant series within itself on a platform.

Bravely Default ended up with a million shipped worldwide, so that helps them consider approving a sequel instead of just ending the franchise. To note, I don't think they expect these kinds of results on the first entry, but I do think it's the kind of thing they hope to ramp to quickly, so if FFEX sells 300K it will probably get a sequel, but if FFEX2 does as well, the series dying becomes notably more likely.

By comparison, Final Fantasy Tactics (nor a similar competing product) hasn't had a gigantic selling entry in ages, so it doesn't exist anymore. The same is true for all sorts of handheld games of that nature where the conceptual potential wasn't in the multi-millions.

Or, to boil down the strategy of the whole company, they want high margin titles relative to budget, and are doing it through either cheap games that have high digital margins, or physical products that sell enough relative to budget to be high margin as well, with everything else heading out the window.

RIP in peace Konami Sports

also, iirc this is the first time the current gen handhelds have had a higher % of sales than psp, though that's not saying much when you realize that's mostly because (weird yu-gi-oh game aside) they stopped putting out psp games and the entire pie itself has shrunk

reading the pr i saw a "new" contra """"""""""game"""""""""" and found this article:

Usually, a slot machine operator will have to negotiate with the game designer or the company that owns the rights to the game’s intellectual property. With Konami Neo Contra slots, this is not the case. Back when Konami developed video games, it created Contra and so it owns the intellectual property. This is the first time that this has occurred in the slot machine market, and it is a very interesting development.

that hurt
i'm also sure it's factually incorrect as i know there's been goemon slots etc.

You've done many wrong guesses before and I don't know how you got to that before we see December sales.

It's not a crazy prediction considering 3DS peaked in 2012 and has been on a downward trend since then. Can the New 3DS reverse that? It doesn't seem likely.

Definitely seems like Nintendo's 3DS output is coming to a close. What do we have announced as of now?

Majora's Mask
Xenoblade
Steam

I'm sure we will get a couple of more games announce though

Nintendo likes to keep their plans secret a lot of the time announcing games and launching them within the same year. Hell majoras past is coming out in what? Less then a year. So it wouldn't surprise me if they're hiding a few other games.

Wonder if Kirby Curse can crawl to 400K LTD.

Mmm, maybe 250-300K.
How did canvas curse do compared to traditional kirby?

Pretty sure it was the new bundles.

Those bundles also included new games. Wii Party U sold around the same amount as a single SKU as did the bundle including it. Those new games could have boosted hardware sales even without being bundled. On the other hand, without those new games, there would have been no comparable bundles. So I think the games are more important than the fact that they were bundled.

Last year Japanese economy was doing much worse than this year and people had less spending money. So the value packs were needed to convince them to buy the Wii U. This year the situation is much better and people are already spending more.

As a new game, SSB4WiiU, once it arrives it will boost sales like Wii Party U and Fit U did. It doesn't need to be bundled this time. The Wii U also has an even better library this year than last. And big titles announced for spring.

Basically SSB4 can sustain hardware sales until XBX hits, which will nicely counter the biggest exclusive release for PS4. A full game versus a demo. Actually I think FFXV will help sell XBX. Because it will leave people hungry for more. XBX can satisfy that appetite.

This year's holiday Taiko will also do better out of the door than last year's, because of the increased install base. Wii U will do very well, it has plenty of games and promises of even more great titles to come, soonish. PS4 only has promises, the biggest late and actually still unannounced.

PS4 will still sell on the promise and for the exclusives that will actually release. But Nintendo has good answers to Sony's still lacking release schedule. A lot of which still is cross gen.

And here's how Square Enix categorizes their smartphones success and plans:

I guess holiday sales could change things, but it's fascinating to see how quickly mobile turned into the largest segment. Great for Square that the change was so seamless.

RIP in peace Konami Sports
I can't get over Konami separating their games into "Soccer", "Baseball", "Metal Gear" and "other". Great way of hiding that it's the Metal Gear company now.

So long my love Frontier Gate. T~T

I'm still wondering how the hell did projects like Bravely Second and FF Explorers got greenlit. It doesn't fit in their strategy for the last few years.

Bravely Default was a low-budget project (outsourced, no relevant marketing behind it) that sold extremely well (it was sold-out during the launch period), had long legs (starting with 144k and ending up with 300k units), and had a pretty good word-of-mouth (testified by the success of the For the Sequel version). Also, the game past the million mark worldwide, and it's basically the most successful new SQEX IP since... Kingdom Hearts?

2015 3DS will be amiibo-centered imho. I struggle to see them create two new revisions with new features in late 14 and release a brand new console in 15.
I think they will at least release (in addition to those titles, and in addition to the titles third party already announced even recvently like...this week) the Pikachu Detective game and an Amiibo game.
Not counting the obvious YW3 from L5 ;p

Yep, Kimihiko Fujisaka does the character art for Terra Battle.

Nice! Thanks, didn't know that.
I wish a publisher will pay Mistwalker for a new game on consoles...
Even if Terra Battle is pretty good and fits well on mobile

I'm unsure...

Bandai Namco earnings release summary: http://www.bandainamco.co.jp/ir/result/pdf/20141106_3Summary.pdf

コンテンツの上期は、家庭用ゲームは、海外で前期発売した「DARKSOULSII」がヒットし上期90万本以上を販売しました.

Does that mean Dark Souls II sold over 900k in the first half of the fiscal year overseas?

If, yes, I imagine most of it is from the PC release.

Nippon Ichi first-half earnings: http://nippon1.co.jp/news/pdf/2014/20141107.pdf and http://nippon1.co.jp/news/pdf/2014/20141107_3.pdf

Profit is down 56%, but it wasn't as bad as they thought. They had forecast a loss, but Shin Hayarigami sold above expectations and all business performed well.

RIP in peace Konami Sports

It is dying, but the big difference is mostly to PES 2015 being released in November instead of September outside Japan (that is, it was no included in the 2015H1).

Final Fantasy: Record Keeper is making over 1 billion yen per month.

Big success for DeNA/Mobage and whatever Square's portion is.

Source: http://dena.com/intl/press/2014/11/...arter-fiscal-year-2014-financial-results.html

That puts this at around $290K a day:

Can Final Fantasy save GREE as well?

Yeah, as far as Japanese retail IPs go, I believe you are correct.
