Alex Hutchinson: There probably won't be a sequel to Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

On IGN's Drunk Tank Happy Hour Podcast, a user question was asked regarding if a sequel to blood dragon would happen.

Hutchinson responded as such around the 50 minute mark

The cool thing about Blood Dragon was that it was a surprise. It was a great use of the Far Cry 3 base, and had an awesome soundtrack. So the answer is no, you won't be getting another one of those. Hopefully we can come up with something that surprises you as much as the original blood dragon. And if we did make one, I'll probably get told on twitter "Are we going to get a blood dragon every year? You're just in a factory churning things out"

after seeing how crazy FC4 looks, it would be a shame if we didn't had a blood dragon expansion based on that.

I like that blood dragon will exist as its own entity. Considering FC4 I would love a DLC that parodies bollywood movies. Those things are far more over the top than any 80's sci -fi action movie I watched.

That sounds awesome lol.

Hopefully we see something even cooler than Blood Dragon come out in the near future based around the FC4 base. Don't know if that's possible, but here's hoping.

That'd actually be incredible
Edit: Dang it you switched it!

The guy wont even talk about all of the Far Cry 4 features, but will confirm the non-existance of another FC game...

Getting so annoyed.

Plus the fact that he was the director of the worst Assassin's Creed game which left a really bad taste in my mouth doesn't help me like him.

I was planning on completely ignoring FarCry 4 (just really not interested), but I was excited about the idea of a new Blood Dragon. Shame.

It's okay if it's not Blood Dragon specifically, but I definitely hope there is a game in the crazy parody style of Blood Dragon for the FC4 engine.

Also, I wouldn't mind seeing a Definitive Edition of Blood Dragon.

While that is an amazing idea, I feel like it will be all QTE's

It was just nice to see some wacky DLC that wasn't just "LOL WE ADDED ZOMBIEZ!"

Hopefully whatever he is working on next keeps the spirit of weird and dumb shit of blood dragon but added to a completely new theme.

I don't even know how you would make a good sequel to that game. It was its own thing. I'm glad they're letting it be.

I could've sworn there was someone from Ubisoft, who worked on Blood Dragon, that was saying they're working on another recently.

Well I know Dean Evans, the creative director & mastermind behind Blood Dragon, is working on something at Ubi's new montreal studio (the one they bought from the THQ liquidation). Pretty sure Ubi is kinda letting him make whatever he wants after impressing them with Blood Dragon since it did so much better than they ever expected....

No, seriously. I don't mind it not being an annualised franchise (and I'd much prefer it),
but There simply aren't enough comedic FPSes out there. That genre is almost entirely untapped!

I actually wouldn't mind an annulalized release if they were all unique over the top terrible B-movie style FPS's.

The bollywood one would be hilariously awesome.

I mean, when people say they want "Blood Dragon 2," we don't literally mean Blood Dragon 2. We mean another thing that takes Far Cry 4's base and creates something that similarly doesn't give a fuck. Isn't there some Shangrila type thing in Far Cry 4 already? I'd expect a "Blood Dragon 2" to be like that. The Bollywood thing sounds cool too though.

On the one hand, he's totally correct in just about every way.
If they made a sequel and released it within like 2 years, they'd probably get blasted for it being derivative, and knowing how little Ubisoft bothers to change their formula, it probably wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable as the original.
Also the surprise WAS pretty fucking cool. Even with stuff like Drive in 2011 and Hotline Miami in 2012, I don't think anyone expected a Neo-80's themed game from Ubisoft of all people.

However that's why the game would need to grow into its own thing. Move away from Far Cry and give the sequel its own mission types, side-missions, engine, gameplay, mechanics etc. Keep the same theme, humor, style, writing but go even deeper with the setting, references and what not. Give the game a proper 3-4 year Dev cycle and really do something special with it.

So he's right, but I still think with the right team a sequel could turn out brilliant and I'm still a little sad that it won't happen. At least Hotline Miami 2 is still coming and will hopefully sate my lust for Neo-80's.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.

They do really want to make that

When people ask for blood dragon 2, they are mostly referring to something with the same setting of VHS future.

I'd say half of the people asking for Blood Dragon 2 want that, the other half want a BD that eschews all the Far Cry stuff (Ubisoft open world stuff) and is more of a straight up shooter.

It's pretty obvious that he won't announce it before the release of the main game. But considering the success of blood dragon, I am pretty sure that they have something in mind.

I mean, I totally understand what they're talking about, and I don't want Blood Dragon to become something annualized either, but god damn it. It was so good. It was the perfect video game.

It's a crying shame that we get 500 AssCreed and Call of Duty games, but only one brief and magical Blood Dragon.

Can Blood Dragon 2 be a sequel in story-sense, as in was it left open at the end? Or it's more of an idea that it'd be a parody game? Didn't it have the problem of much like Sunset Overdrive where it recognised it's a videogame but make you go through the boring design stuff anyway, which goes back to the flaws with that bad Matt Hazard game?
