Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Oh please running a game maxed out and expecting it to run 60 fps is the most ridiculous thing especially one with advanced graphical effects

Can't wait to capture some 4K screens. If you hold down the right stick, it hides all the HUD too, so this game is basically made for screenshotting :D

There's no 4x or 2x setting. Its just "TXAA" in the options. Anyways Ill disable it and go with 4x MSAA and start from the beginning again. Gonna see what changed, my Internet is slow so downloading the driver takes a couple of minutes. Just gonna benchmark it without the nVidia effects.

Oddly enough I cant find a tesselation setting.. maybe its enabled by default.

Why MSAA ? WHYYYY

SMAA looks great and has so much smaller performance impact than MSAA it's not even funny.

I just bought a stupidly expensive gaming laptop with a 870m in it, and it won't even be able to run it properly by the looks of things.
Honestly, what's the point in a PC version when they cut off a massive chunk of their market by demanding tech barely anyone has to run it?

Ah well, at least those screenshots you took were pretty, OP.

This is with *everything* maxed out. I'm not sure why you're making judgements based off that.

Blah, blah, blah, people freaking out again, don't understand optional settings, blah, blah. Can't wait to give the game a spin when uplay unlock it tonight at 1440p with a single 970. I'll make the game run well just like Crysis 3, AC IV, and every other game out there.
Might end up buying another 970 to make it so, but oh well...

Thanks for the effort OP, the pictures look great.

So if a game runs poorly with all the bells and whistles, it must be bad? Wow, GAF sure has a bleak look on the world. This is why Companies don;t like pushing things, because it's looked at as weak developing because it can't run on currently popular cards. If every game was tied to the performance available at the time, where would Crysis be? We might as well call PC's consoles for holding developers back behind hardware limitations.

The game looks phenomenal, and the lighting is godly in those screens. If games start pushing more limits then it can only be a good thing for us PC gamers.

You should have bought one with a 900 series gpu in it

Game only has FXAA, MSAA and TXAA

Anyways guys the driver is installed, Ill start from the beginning and this time without TXAA and on more reasonable settings for my GPU. Lets see.

Max settings are for enthusiasts class desktop PCs, nothing wrong with that.
Those are options you know, not requirements.

Very disappointing, AC4 had SMAA.
Sorry, if you want 60fps your only choice is FXAA.

I'm with some of you in regards to AA. I think MSAA is a bit outdated. It's a performance hog. TXAA is a bit blurry too and is also a performance hog. I'd rather do 1.5x resolution than use 4xTXAA and I bet it would perform better too.

You won't be able to play at ultra, you will still be able to play the game. No single GPU system should be able to run games on there highest settings anyways. It's called future proofing

Lower the settings, you'll probably be fine. This is all at max.

TXAA gets rid of almost all aliasing in return for slight blur, a tiny bit of downsampling on its own does very, very little to get rid of aliasing.

Well that is god damn stupid. As in incredibly boneheadedly stupid. WTF Watchdogs and AC4 had SMAA.

I will use FXAA in that case, maybe it will be good enough, and I play on plasma anyway so it should be fine.
Could you try to find settings in which you are able to get 60fps and post it here ?
And thanks for your effort.

I wish more people understood that. There is a reason why demanding games perform as they do even on "high-end" systems.
I assume (just like ACIII) that tessellation is embedded in the Environment setting.

Sounds like a very well made PC versions, aside from the lack of a better PPAA than FXAA.

It's looks bad imo... want to see more screenshots too...I'm sure it will be better...

Ah yes, I can't say the screenshot in front of the chateau looks very well. Fantastic character models, though, and I'd still like to see more to give it proper judgment.

I for one am happy with what I am seeing, I probably wont run it on Ultra, but if the PS4 version of the game looks like Unity looks on Medium, then High will probably be more than good enough for me. This game looks gorgeous.

This is amazing. You can really see the improvements over the console version. HBAO+ works wonders.

That doesn't look good to me. All the textures in the distance just kind of smudge together, like everything is made of clay or something. Don't know what they are doing with this game.

870m performs closely to a 750 Ti doesn't it? Anyways, I'll try AC Unity with my R9 270 and see how it performs.

There does not seem to be 16xAF on this shot.
OP don't forget to force it in your CP.

Yeah that's the pic I'm referring to.

I've seen the game look much much better in streams of console versions so I'm just a bit, I dunno... maybe it's just that shot...

Would be interesting to see, if the pop-in (complete change of clothes) on NPCs is also a problem in the PC Version.

Slight blur? I can't say I agree with that. I'd rather have the aliasing from 1.5x1080p than the blurry washiness of 4xTXAA.

Be interesting to see how much driver optimizations help this, and how much better/worse it performs on equivalent AMD hardware. Still, seems kinda like how Watch_Dogs was at launch.

Also, am I the only one who doesn't think it looks that good? Might just be the art style. Everything kinda looks like its made out of play-doh.

Unfortunately, along with the classic "my brand new PC can't run this at max, crap port!!".

Same old same old, if only people realized what settings they're running there would be a lot less disappointments.

The issue of unrealistic expectations is a serious one in my opinion. It's like people expect to be running current gen games downsampled maxed at 60 fps as if they were last gen ports. The bar has been raised, everyone should be using the console version as a baseline in order to determine what kind of performance to expect.

Having no AA and only downsampling doesn't get rid of aliasing unless you're going from 8K or something crazy though. And TXAA looks much better in motion than in screenshots.

My prediction (given than every single other multi-plat has ended up the same way):

After the official benchmarks are in, it will tunr out that a GPU close to the PS4's wil perform exactly like the PS4. And mroe powerufl hardware will perform considerably better.

Console gamers will STILL use this thread as "proof" that PC gaming sucks because you can't even play the game at 30 FPS with two titan's in SLI.

agreed. I turned it all the way up in Black Flag and felt like I was playing the game through blurry glasses. I turned it off and enjoyed the game much better without it.

I think this game has fantastic art and lighting. It'll probably look amazing at 1440p.

30FPS on a 780 is worrying though.

Alright, driver is installed - restarting now. There are some unskippable cutscenes btw so it might take 5-10 minutes.
