Didn't Super Light temporarily take #1 at some point.

Also White Cat Project is unique in that it doesn't have any stamina bars impeding playtime so hopefully it taking top honors inspires more games to do the same.

You're right, it looks like it was #1 on September 19th and September 20th, though it never returned there.

Dropping stamina is a great idea for games where they expect the player will actually be able to play several hours and not get bored, so they can monetize on engagement instead of through immediacy.

You sure love talking about mobile stats Nirolak! :p Is it because you love JP mobile gaming, or because of news and such?
A lot of Japanese mobile games are honestly terrible, but from a business perspective I actually find it the most interesting part of the Japanese industry currently because there are frequent shake-ups and market dynamics changes.

Something that's mostly stagnant and expected isn't nearly as interesting to follow.

I have played a couple I like, and one I really like (Terra Battle), but I wouldn't consider it my primary gaming interest by quite a bit.

Like, imagine if a new Yokai Watch type hits (either YW1 or YW2 depending on the game) came up 10-15 times a year, and some of them stayed around forever, while others quickly faded, and there were lots of other attempts at the crown that worked and didn't work to talk about on a regular basis. This is what the mobile part of the Japanese industry is like (and what the console/handheld part used to be like).

Has the Pokemon Company released the TCG app in Japan?

It does not appear so, but I could be wrong.

PS3 vs. PS4
Code:

week 38 - 759,324 / 1,044,460 -285,136

Wii U went below 7k for the following 9 weeks, good chance for PS4 to shrink the gap a little.

The following 3 weeks 3DS sold 74k, 61k, 71k.

Everything looks to be 3DS for the rest of 2014. They've scraped up a pretty damn solid holiday line-up, with titles as mh4u, smash and ykw2 and the new hw model continuing to push hw as well

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Hasn't this been posted yet?

Pokemon ORAS pre-orders has surpassed the million mark, it becomes the 2014 most pre-ordered game and it's in pace exceeding the previous game XY.

http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/000/957/957565/

Hmm had not seen this.

Good for the Pokemon Company; they are most likely experiencing a severe YoY drop (20-30%) in licensed merchandise revenues/royalties since Yokai Watch sudden popularity in Japan.

At least that's great news for them.

For those interested, the Pokemon Company in 2014 have been keen in targeting more overseas $ in order to offset such a sudden loss of revenue:

- Resurgence of popularity in India through new partnerships (http://www.licensemag.com/license-global/pokemon-scores-big-india-tv)
- Establishment of European Market Development team for a greater presence in licensing, retail, and brand in Europe (sales up YoY as such - http://www.toyworldmag.co.uk/news/2014/10/pokemon-tcg-sales-up-more-than-50-in-uk)
- Pokemon TCG App release on IOS for greater brand awareness, in the hopes of boosting TCG sets, and further down the line, by the end of the year hopefully, implement in-app purchases, and an advertising campaign to support it (soft-launch now in Canada).
- Streaming rights for anime & movies licensed to Hulu and Netflix, and TV broadcast providers (http://www.licensemag.com/license-global/miptv-pokemon-expands-animation-offerings)
- Greater licensing partnerships with Google, McDonalds, Adidas, etc. to drive-up sales in overseas subsidiaries, up in US & Canada (http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/29995.html, http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/29326.html)

The Pokemon Company in Japan have now a competitor not seen since Yu-Gi-Oh!, and they've been aggressive this year, more than I've ever seen from them.

You would assume that Yōkai Watch would hurt the Pokémon brand, but is there any evidence to it?

Well Pokemon X/Y are on their way to be the worst selling mainline Pokemon entries in Japan (though probably the best sellers on the 3DS, except perhaps Animal Crossing's insane legs), unlikely to sell 5M (probably stuck in the 4M range). The game also hasn't charted in the top 30 in a long while whereas the original YW and YW2 have been charting with no difficulty. Those are some signs I guess.

- Yokai Watch has dethroned Pokemon in weekly TV ratings since early last year. Last week - http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...ation-tv-ranking-october-27-november-2/.80850
- McDonald's Japan have chosen to scrap their holiday plans to Yokai merchandise, as oppose to their yearly tradition of Pokemon calenders since 2007 - http://en.rocketnews24.com/2014/11/...s-calendar-pokemon-fans-sob-into-their-fries/
- Bandai Namco attributes their upward revisions in their forecasts due to Yokai Watch merchandise as they hold the license for the property - http://www.bandainamco.co.jp/files/E383AAE383AAE383BCE382B9_E6A5ADE7B8BEE4BA88E683B3E.pdf

There's an abundance of hints that Pokemon merchandise has had decreased revenues/royalties comparatively to last year.

The only reason DQ on PS4 isn't a sure thing is that it breaks DQ's tradition of being on the best selling platform. Even if we exclude mobile -- which we really shouldn't, given how popular mobile platforms are in Japan -- PS4 is dwarfed by 3DS, and even outside that it's just not a popular console by any historical measure.

Of course, if everyone and their mother jumps on board (FF + DQ + MGS + RE etc. etc.) then third parties can sort of force adoption, but that's a sort of awkward way to go about it. It seems far more reasonable to simply go to the platforms consumers actually want, and not force them to buy a system they apparently aren't as interested in. They did that with Xbox 360, as well, and it just felt like they were trying to climb up a hill when it would have made far more sense to go the easy route and just make their games for the Wii.

With all that said, it seems pretty clear at this point DQ will be on the PS4, breaking the traditional "most popular platform" routine.

I thought the tradition was just "whatever Yuji Horii wants."

I'm kind of curious about the back-story in terms of how he managed to swing such control over a relatively major franchise. I can't think of any other creators who have that level of IP control in terms of big publishing houses off the top of my head.
Well, I feel that 1.) he was making good business decisions anyway and 2.) Square Enix had so many strong selling games that moving around Dragon Quest (to where even? It went on logical platforms) that Horii didn't want to make the game on wasn't worthwhile given he was a major part of its success.
Oh, I'm not saying the platform choices weren't logical, well the current if it ends up being the PS4 doesn't really make much sense, unless S-E are trying to internationalize the franchise more or something; but more whether he actually has contractual/formal rights over the franchise somehow that grants his power or if it is just that they consider him key to its success.

just come to Japan for 1 day and you'll understand

Bic Camera Ikebukuro is barely promoting MK8 bundle, at the entrance a good space is reserved to WE2015 and to the left side... Jinbanyan and the incoming YW2.5

at the games floor the situation is similar, Pokemon, YW, WE

but I saw an obachan buying the MK8 bundle :D

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
Cross posted to the iOS thread, thanks Takao.

I wish the game would come out for the NDS (yep, not 3DS) too just so that I could be rockin' my paddle controller, that thing is awesome for Arkanoid, Puzzle Bubble and SI Extreme

If anything DQ XI will be multiplatform. A big DQ exec at some point pretty much said it doesn't make sense for the series to remain on single platform.

I think it's very possible. Before the PC release of DQ10, the series's producer Yuu Miyake made a big deal about how the future of the series can't be just a single packaged product for one platform.

Selling that idea to Level 5 would be like selling a boat in a desert.

"let us foot the entire bill" should in theory be enough if nintendo is desperate and willing ?or would an utter Yokai Watch U flop
heehee "watch you flop"
theoretically harm the brand somehow?

Well, time spent making that game (even if the bill is paid) is time/money wasted that could've been spent making Yokai 4.62, which would sell more.

EDIT:
I didn't mean to put a "." in Yokai 4.62. :)

Fair enough. I guess the price would be "foot the entire bill and find somebody to do most of the development work" then.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
If anything DQ XI will be multiplatform. A big DQ exec at some point pretty much said it doesn't make sense for the series to remain on single platform.

This doesnt mean that single DQ games can not be exclusive - just that the IP will be present on multiple system like consoles, handhelds and iOS. I mean look at DQX, they even put it on 3DS via streaming.

Leading up the Anniversary in 2016 we will probably get DQ Heroes, DQM Joker 3 (3DS), DQ Theatrhytm (3DS/Mobile), DQX hitting PS4/PS3, Remake of the first game, DQ XI (3DS) and DQXI HD (consoles).

Hasn't this been posted yet?

Pokemon ORAS pre-orders has surpassed the million mark, it becomes the 2014 most pre-ordered game and it's in pace exceeding the previous game XY.

http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/000/957/957565/

If Pokemon Co. uses, like Nintendo, Media Create as their official tracker this is the situation with preorders.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is available on four region free platforms.

Yeah there's no reason not to just import a Japanese copy of the PS3 version, unless you really wanted to read that hot tetris storyline.

Game isn't that great BTW. Tetris vs Puyo Puyo just feels really unbalanced, and the mashup game doesn't work as well as you'd think. Me and my wife play a lot of Tetris and Puyo Puyo together so I thought this game would be perfect for us, but it just doesn't feel right.

Don't have a PS3, and don't really want to play it on Vita.
Will probably get it like this in the end, but it would have been way better to localize it. Not a huge effort.

Swap mode is theoretically symmetrically balanced although it comes with its own set of quirks.

1) TV ratings don't mean much. I've been looking at those for quite a while (even before the Youkai Watch anime started, actually), and while the Youkai Watch ratings have always been excellent, those for Pokémon XY have remained stable. I haven't seen any sudden drop due to YW. Besides, you can't really compared the two, as both shows don't air at the same time, and therefore aren't competing against the same stuff.

2) Yeah, I saw that McDonalds stuff, and thought 'Damn, TPC probably isn't very happy about that, ha ha'. Now to see how many years they're going to go with YW.

3) What does NB results have to do with Pokémon?

Honestly, it's too early to say anything about YW vs Pokémon for the time being, but it's clear TPC is going to have to get more aggressive in the future (bisonyes.gif). Though for the time being, Pokémon got a pretty major advantage: they're popular all around the world, whereas YW is pretty much a 100% japanese phenomenom for the moment (and still in the growing phase, with results à la booming start-up).

If Pokemon Co. uses, like Nintendo, Media Create as their official tracker this is the situation with preorders.

That's curious... Famitsu article about the 1m pre-orders states that pre-orders for OR/AS are > those for X/Y (they're actually quoting TPC, I believe).

I wonder what kind of PR twist we got to deal with here...

No numbers? Has PSV sold more than 3DS in 2014? It seems not.

numbers you can find by yourself, it's in the OP and just use a calculator to subtract Vita YTD 2014 to YTD 2013

and you asked for Vita numbers and now you talk about "3DS selling more than Vita"...

we both know actually Vita YTD 2014 from 2013 are better (still positive numbers) than 3DS YTD 2014 from 2013 (very negative numbers), because that's what you asked in the beginning and that was the meaning of my answer

maybe the ORAS>XY preorders are about worldwide? I remember in Nintendo's report it was doing particularly better in Europe (lol)

The new PS Nova demo is so damn good.
Hope it really sells well. Really nice conversion of PSO2 to a standalone title.
Might be even better than PSU to PSPortable.

Nah, it was Japan-only, they didn't mention the West at all.

What, YW2.5 got more pre-orders than both versions of YW2?! o_O
Good numbers for Smash, and release is still quite far away.
EOU2 seems to be doing well too.... really good news for Atlus :)
Pokémon is doing great, too.

Is that new Shining PS3 game completely MIA at Mpl's favourite store?
It's in the pre-order ranking.

On a side note, I just noticed that Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax has way more points than One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X. Wonder how they'll translate to sales.
