Halo: MCC might not use dedicated servers (update: p2p only as fallback, post #278)

A few people talking about it in the OT, feel like maybe it need its own thread so we can figure out if it really does or doesnt.

I'm afraid not. I can confirm that I have been host in multiple matchmade games. In-game effects tipped me off, and network traffic monitoring confirmed it.

Few threads about it on halowaypoint as well:

Others saying they keep seeing host migration messages.

Has anyone else seen these messages? Are they placeholders cause maybe just remnants of the old game?

This was a fairly well talked about feature i believe.

In all fairness: we havent gotten any proof either way. But there are host migration messages, and a tonnnn of lag right now.

Wouldn't even really care if it were dedicated servers or not as long as matchmaking worked fine.

As it is it sounds like someone really dropped the ball with this launch.

This is nuts. It's obviously unfinished judging from the myriad of campaign issues, why release it in such a volatile state?

Well the question is... did 343 ever specifically say MCC would definitely only use dedicated servers?

I never followed the development of the game or interviews or anything

I hope it's not true.

They said it during E3 conference.

I've seen host migration messages in the matchmaking lobby. Didn't know what it was.

And sometimes I've seen messages popping up saying connecting to a dedicated server. Sometimes nothing at all.

What gives.

I think it came in real hot because they wanted it out for the holidays/Black Friday.

I also have a sinking feeling that this may not have been as much of a priority for them as they were indicating.

We're going to need some wireshark logs and some quotes of Microsoft/343i employees promising dedicated servers. Then get the masses to start tweeting MS/343i.

Geez, I wanted to buy Halo MCC before Sunset Overdrive because 4 games and online > 1 game, but so far I've only heard bad things concerning Halo's matchmaking and performance problems in Coop/online campaigns.

I think I'll skip it until they fix all these problems (if they ever decide to fix them)

I'm curious, how do you monitor traffic like that?

i mean if youre host your upload/download rates will be larger etc etc.

but in anycase this is wonky. I dont see any reason for a 1st party ms studio making a game on the magnitude of halo to not used dedicated servers ... Im going to assume its decidated (or atlest in most modes apart from a few legacy netcode which make it non dedicated on some cases or is acting up)

I can confirm this is what I'm experiencing. All the games I've played have not been on dedicated servers.

It's pretty clear who the host is based on the incredible amount of advantage he has, almost invincible most of the times, BR shooting people from the other side of the match with impossible precision, etc.

I'm just hoping that this is related to the issues 343i/Microsoft are having... Dedicated servers is what really sold me on this collection. If P2P ends up being the majority of the experience, I'll definitely put down the game.

I'm curious, how do you monitor traffic like that?

Have two network cards in your PC and create a network bridge between the two, with your Xbox connected at one end and your router/modem connected at the other. Then use a tool such as WireShark to log the traffic and analyze it.

Whaaaa? That's not what I expected at all. Does it FEEL P2P for most players? Dedicated servers were a huge part of their E3 "best place to play" push.

Halo 3 net code in the games I've been in is better than it ever has been, but it seems like some MM games essentially turn into a custom game (P2P) and passes the host to someone. Stupid.

You can play online in Halo MCC though.
Also this.

A few days ago I got a "Connecting to a dedicated server" message when the map was loading. Haven't seen that message since.

I have not had any host migration in any of the 36 games I've completed in Matchmaking during the game. I have seen the message in the pregame menus which is interesting.

Its Halo so I've seen plenty of quitters to, I even had a game by myself which was fun.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
After the bugs I've found in my limited time, there is a high chance that someone "just forgot" to remove the host migration messages displayed during connectivity issues.

I feel that this project was too ambitious and it lacked the quality assurance of a proper Halo title. I am really sad.

We were promised dedicated servers for Matchmaking, were we not?
Maybe I need a little education on the subject but what does that even mean? How can there be any other kind of matchmaking? You need a central server everyone connects to to say 'hey I wanna play da gaem, who else wants to do the pew pew?', no?
