Halo: MCC might not use dedicated servers (update: p2p only as fallback, post #278)

Always a good idea. But of course people should be irritated. My experience has gotten better and better all day, barring some moments that were not directly connected to our initial issues. I'm hoping others are seeing significant improvements but of course when they are, they stop communicating because they're playing. Would be useful for me to see improvement anecdotes and descriptions.

I had 20 minutes to kill before work (5:00AM EST) and was able to search for, and play 2 matchmade games in H2A, after a hard reset on my XB1. Yesterday I was unable to find a match at all.

Good luck, hope you get this ironed out soon so 343 can start getting the praise it deserves for this collection.

The way I see it, when I put it into perspective, this game will probably be supported for six years or more online. Three or four days of matchmaking errors doesn't really bother me. I got four single player campaigns to get to.

And the fallback to p2p is smart. I'd rather find a match of any kind then miss out because there is a problem with a dedicated server.

I assume the improvements are for the US only?

Haven't played a single match made game in Australia since launch. Ditto for my friends.

Ridiculous.

Has it been discussed if a beta would have helped/fixed this? I have yet to even try the multi since me and my wife are going through the single players of all the games first but I don't recall hearing about a beta for this game at all.

Works great for 2 player co-op through the games so far for us - way better than destiny when we could almost never get eachother into a party.

Bad situation - luckily for me I decided to play all the campaigns before I jump into multiplayer so this hasn't affected me at all but this must really suck for people who bought it for competitive.

I'm not saying I definitively know why they shipped an unfinished game. I'm just saying that if you look at the history of unfinished or broken products (not just in the videogame industry) it's usually, if not always to get that product to market to start making sales.

This is beyond stupid...

Anyone whose been playing halo for the last 10-13 years knows very well how different dedicated servers feel compared to p2p connections.

When you play the MCC and on the rare occasion that it actually works, all the anger just fades away and you see what an awesome game this is gonna be when it's all sorted.

People have every right to be mad. Some took time off work to play and then couldn't, and a lot of people (myself included) went out to buy and Xbox One just for this game. They'll fix it. Chill the fuck out.

’d like to take a moment to address the state of matchmaking in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and tell you what we’re doing about it.
Players have expressed frustration at poor matchmaking times, or bad experiences in general. This is something we are working 24/7 to isolate and fix. Since launch, we have done a number of daily server-side tweaks to improve this experience and our data indicates these adjustments have helped considerably, but the state is still far from where it needs to be.
Over the past 48 hours, we believe we have identified the primary matchmaking issue, and are working on a solution right now. In the meantime, we’ll be rolling out additional tweaks over the next days to further improve the experience while we ready this solution. We are monitoring the data and working on tweaks that should continue to improve your matchmaking experience while we prep. In addition, we’ll be releasing a game Content Update tomorrow that will address non-matchmaking related issues. For more details, please visit our support FAQ on our forums that is being updated in real-time: http://bit.ly/11eRtP0.
An additional measure you will see take effect today, is that we’ve decided to trim the hopper list to allow us to drive population to those that are functioning the best – this will serve to further increase the speed with which you find games. We will bring the other hoppers back online as things improve, but our primary focus right now is getting you into matches. For details on which matchmaking playlists are being temporarily taken offline, please visit our support FAQ here: http://bit.ly/11eRtP0.
We are doing everything we can on an hourly basis to improve the experience, while we work on our solution. In the meantime, we’ve found a few things looking at the data that can help you a little as well. We’re seeing successful match times from anywhere from 15 seconds to 4 minutes. 4 minutes is a long time to wait for a match, but don’t quit out too quickly as it will come. If you haven’t found a match within about 4 minutes, please exit the search and restart, as this will reset the parameters and increase the likelihood of entering a match. I realize this isn’t ideal, but it’s temporary while we sort things out.
I’d like to personally apologize to you all for the current situation. I can assure you we’re attacking this from all directions from 343 Industries to the Xbox platform, and we won’t rest until it’s what it should be. People are reporting improvements across the board, which is great, but we’re not backing down until we finish this fight.
Here’s a bit more information on what to expect next week in terms of MCC updates:
Daily server-side tweaks to continue to improve time to get into games
A Content Update tomorrow that addresses some campaign fixes and scoring issues
Content Updates and server side tweaks over the next week focused on matchmaking
Dan Ayoub
Executive Producer

We are aware that while some users are reporting improved Matchmaking experiences, many users have not seen an improvement. As a result, we are temporarily moving to a limited playlist layout that will allow for players to find games faster.
We’ll temporarily be removing the following playlists:
Team Hardcore
Rumble Pit
Halo 4
SWAT (rotational)
The updated playlist layout will be:
Team Halo 2: Anniversary
Halo Championship Series
Team Slayer
Big Team Battle
Halo 2 Classic
Halo 3
This concentrated playlist layout will allow players to get into matches faster, and improve overall match times. While we anticipate that concentrating our players into fewer playlists will have an effect on match times, it will not solve all Matchmaking issues. We are currently investigating CUs and server side tweaks over the next week to address matchmaking issues. To read more, see our latest update here: Additionally, we have a Content Update going live tomorrow that will address fixes for scoring and stats. This update does not include in-progress Matchmaking fixes, outside of a minor fix for team skill matching. The patch notes from this update will be posted tomorrow morning when the update goes live. For more info, see the latest update from the team: https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/...te/10e177f9-50ce-4c73-95bf-bbadd2cc6fe7/posts

Lastly, back-end data is showing that the majority of successful Matchmaking matches are found within 2-4 minutes of searching. When searching, if you do not find a match within 5 minutes, please return to lobby and restart the search, as this will reset the search parameters and increase the likelihood of finding a match within the aforementioned range.
Thank you for your continued patience. We will continue to post regular updates as we work to deliver fixes.

Not really, you can read up on game design, a beta stage is actually defined as a shippable product that may contain non game breaking glitches and bugs, so in essence, a product can ship with those known issues and they can or cannot be fixed post launch, if its not game breaking, its shippable.
our months before code release.

Beta
See also: Beta release
Beta is feature and asset complete version of the game, when only bugs are being fixed.[151][152] This version contains no bugs that prevent the game from being shippable.[151] No changes are made to the game features, assets, or code. Beta occurs two to three months before code release.[1

Caring is not a useful word when discussing these big "AAA" videogames. Creating these videogames is a job. The end result is a product. The purpose is money.

Really? I suppose Naughty Dog just phoned it in when making the Last of Us? because apparently game developers aren't passionate, and don't 'care' about what they do? What a nonsensical thing to say.

If anything, and in my experience, the developers are exponentially more passionate and emotionally invested in their creations than almost any of the fans (I'm not saying that fans aren't intensely passionate too, this thread obviously shows that). But developers put so much blood sweat and tears into a product like this, and if things go sideways, it can be extremely depressing and hard on them. It can deeply affect their personal lives, especially if server issues like this cause financial troubles and their studio/livelihood gets torn apart.

Reading some comments, it makes it obvious I do not take this stuff as serous as some people.

I'm a VERY patient person though. I'd say screw it, maybe, after a couple weeks...then come back later. I certainly wouldn't excuse the problems, but at minimum I'd give them till at least the weekend.

I will say...this has to absolutely suck if you took time off though. Especially (unpaid) time off.

Would be nice if you could say something about the bugs/glitches in the single player. I understand servers are a priority now, but will 343 look into those problems too?

To get back to the thread topic. People should not be okay with P2P matchmaking as fallback. Especially when that fallback occurs behind the scenes.

It's especially concerning because I don't think I have seen the "connecting to dedicated servers" once. Does that mean that I have only played P2P matchmaking?

This should be another issue that people should be outraged by. Don't just roll over because a mystical industry person entered the thread and told you that "everything is going to be alright."

I'm not understanding your reasoning behind why does this game have a back up if the servers are overloaded or down. I understand P2P is not dedicated servers, but shouldn't games and services people use have back ups in place in case the optimal way is inaccessible at some point? When the electricity in my house is knocked off I have a backup generator just in case my service may be down for an extended period. Is it the best way to power my house? No, but it keeps me living a normal life if a hurricane wipes the power out in my area for 2 weeks. Would you like for them to rent some servers from Amazon for back up instead or something?

I understand both the dedicated and P2P matchmaking is currently not working, but I see no reason to grab a pitchfork every time a game didn't work at launch. If I did that I wouldn't be playing games anymore.

No, I am not happy things aren't working. I would've liked to play some MM the other day, but I have been sticking to custom matches and have been having fun with those. I'll be starting up the campaigns tomorrow and maybe hopefully by the weekend the matchmaking issue will be improved or resolved.

Edit** Took comment out. Dedicated servers confirmed

It's not even available for purchase in the PSN store. Hasn't been for some time now. What a mess that has become.

It's understandable though if someone brings it up. Don't really understand that strong reaction from you

My strong reaction has to do with pointing fingers to other products just because, which *always* ends up like, frankly, this thread.

Anyway, it's not even close to Driveclub. I bought Driveclub and I bought MCC, and both are really not comparable. DC failed to connect to any servers for 3 weeks, and people seem to forget that the moto of that game is related to driving in clubs, issuing challenges and playing online. Heck, even playing solo there's a scrolling "FAILED TO CONNECT TO SERVERS" message during each and every race!

MCC has 4 pretty lenghty campaigns, custom games (that work at launch), coop (that work too), and PVP that for some people work as intended. And that's 3 days after launch, not a month.

I fail to see how anyone in their right mind can compare this to the absolute mess that was (and still is) DC, really. I'm willing to bet everyone that does it simply has not tried both games in their current state. MCC is in a much, much, much better form, there's no comparison really.

That new update doesn't even mention the Achievements issue.

Myself and others are literally going to have Achievements permanently in a "Done! Unlocking..." limbo for months/years. It's just disgusting.

DriveClub was a new IP and developed by a studio with troubled development and they are not using like Microsoft Dedicated servers and have no excellent experience of online games like 343. MCC was developed by 4 studios and this match making was taken care big studio 343, but still they failed to provide stable connectivity like they claim with Dedicated severs and better online service which is one of major advantage of Xbox in everyones view for a big holiday game.

It would certainly be unacceptable if that were the case for months/years. The good news is, the update from today did mention a content update for tomorrow that addresses "some campaign fixes and scoring issues."

Joke post?

Who gives a crap about achievements? lol

The game has been out for a couple days, I doubt "achievements popping" is a priority. Please tell me you're joking.

Unless you have some magic crystal ball that told you these things.

A lot of people do care about achievements. Enough that they decided to add 4500 points to the game.

Maybe you don't, doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed for the people who do.

Yes, it should be fixed.

It should not, in any way at all, be a priority in this case.

So do some people just sit here and get ready to defend and make excuses for any complaint?

Achievements broken beyond repair? Well those are dumb! You shouldn't even care!

No one is defending anything. It's childish to think the priority here is achievements.

Who jumps to the conclusion that they'll never fix them? Really?

You think they're going to ignore the achievements not registering for forever...just because they have much more pressing matters.

Did my pointing out that various campaign fixes were mentioned as being in tomorrow's update mean nothing?

That's referring to a number of other issues, not Achievements.

I understand the confusion though, we have about 200+ issues and bugs here too contend with.

WOW it seems like MCC MP (and some of SP?) is broken/unplayable (thought this may be an overreaction) so I'm not as bummed I couldn't afford to get it day one. Hopefully next week when I get paid these issues with be fixed.

As a Driveclub owner, he sounds educated. This thread is about the online play. Drive club's online play was unavailable for weeks.

I guess those 15 races I did last night with my friends were imaginary. That must mean the near 100 i did for 3 weeks prior were also imaginary.

  • Leaderboards don't update in real time.
  • Club challenges are disabled.
  • Faceoffs work when they want to.
  • 50% chance you might get into an online race.
  • Takes anywhere from 15secs to 1min to start a race.

It's a fucking mess.

Was there mention that it was specifically not achievements? The statement I quoted certainly didn't. I'm trying to give you information you supposedly want, but it's possible you know something I don't.

So is MCC going to be running on Azure? The txt below gives off the impression that it's a third party.

Can't say I know where 343i is running their servers, but I wouldn't read too much into that statement. 3rd party to Xbox Live could be 343i as the game server code producer, Azure as the hosting provider, or somebody else as the hosting provider.

I personally read that as Xbox Live is working with 343i to get things fully operational. 343i being the third party in this case.

Weird, I was playing through the CE heroic playlist and jumped from Assault on the Control Room to The Library, skipping 343 Guilty Spark. Guess I'll have to go play that level from the campaign menu.

Edit: Whoops, wrong thread

They knew we'd all just do the trick to stay in the pelican at the start of the level to skip the first part.

Lol, dat disconnect between cutscenes and gameplay sometimes. Beginning of Sacred Icon and it's a clear day, but as soon as the game starts it's night. :lol

I absolutely adore the work Blur did for these cutscenes, but I honestly wished they would've been kept in-engine.

That's actually the case in the original game as well IIRC; the level is darker than the initial cutscene simply because the starting part of the initial cutscene comes in from a high angle; where the Sun is present.

I'll give it a week before I traded-in...maybe use it towards GTA V or FH2.

I didn't say 'is', I said 'was'. For awhile there was no online play whatsoever. His point was that with Halo there may not be dedicated servers, but at least when they're down you get P2P.

I've had 100% faith in 343 Industries ever since they took over the Halo name many years ago, and I LOVE Halo 4, but I'll be shocked if the Halo: MCC is fixed before the end of the year. There's just countless problems

Making games on this level is hard work. You can't catch every bug, and there are things that are hard to test or plan for. A beta might have resolved some of that, but nobody can say for certain without knowing the innards of the project and XBL if it would have. I'm not going to pretend I know one way or the other but I do know it's hard work.

Additionally, I will say as a software developer (in a different field), that bugs absolutely are the bane of our existence. Especially in production. I've introduced bugs into my code, and when I don't catch it, the QA people don't catch it, but the customer does, I/we feel terrible. I can imagine that the guys at 343 that worked on this game feel the same damn way. You can call it ass kissing or whatever, but I know that it's not easy, and bugs are going to happen no matter how many god-tier engineers you have. So yeah it sucks that the game got out with these bugs, but take a goddamn step back and let them try and resolve it. Nobody died as a result of this release, so it's not a big deal. Once it's fixed I'm sure you can recoup that massive investment you put into the console and the game.

We DO have dedicated servers.

First off – and I will say this for the next hundred years – SORRY – we are fixing it. It’s getting better slowly today and we expect that trend to continue, but what you’re seeing currently is actually just an element of this complicated problem – we do in fact use dedicated servers for matchmade games, but as an emergency contingency, MCC is designed to fall back to traditional peer-hosted gameplay in the event that there are connectivity issues with the dedicated servers. This can happen for a variety of reasons including intermittent unavailability of dedicated servers, poor ping times to the dedicated server datacenters, or network configuration issues that prevent you from being able to access the dedicated servers. We’re busy getting stuff fixed and improved, and I promise you I will give you a full breakdown of what happened (and it’s multiple compounding things) after we fix it all. And Dan is going to update everyone on the situation and improvements later today.

And sorry for periods of radio silence, we're literally rushing around fixing stuff.

You are a good man Stinkles. Thank you.
