NPD Sales Results for October 2014 [Up3: All of Nintendo's 3DS million sellers]

I feel on the whole we continue to see the importance of third parties rise versus what the first parties are able to put out.

Obviously there are exceptions like Smash, but third parties are releasing the vast majority of major hits and console selling titles these days.
This has seemed pretty obvious even as of five years ago. PS3 had a ton of good exclusives in 2009 and the price drop to $299, but Xbox 360 was the system that people played Modern Warfare 2 on.

And like I said before, it seems kinda pathetic that TLOU Remastered and Master Chief Collection are likely to be the top selling first party games from Sony and Microsoft this year. Third party publishers should be happy that they are seeing so little competition for their games from those two platform holders.

Maybe November will simply come down to who can ship the most units that get sold as bundles at the big retailers.

Told ya that

Sunset wasnt charting :(

PS4 was winning.

Thanks for the hint MS. Also thanks for making November a lock for Sony due to how atrocious MCC has been

Sony will win but I think MCC is still going to move a lot of consoles.

Also, Sony winning is in your best interest?

It's all about picking the right horse in terms of co-marketing.

Drive Club was just a failed launch all around.

A lot of sports games hold well into the November season as well, especially NBA.
Yep, was gonna include in my edit, the new releases in themselves would probably be enough to fill the all-formats, with those holdovers as well as all the new releases, while it may chart, I can't see it charting high.

EDIT: is it being combined with the "for 3DS" version. From memory, if they have different names they tend to be treated as separate in the charts.

The "uh oh now evo has to close down because dc bombed" concern trolling pisses me off. Hold off on such remarks that would impact a lot of peoples jobs when we obviously don't have all the relevant data.

Well it's a good thing Evil Within charted considering its apparently ridiculous marketing budget. That game was EVERYWHERE for a few weeks.

Wolfenstein also had a fairly large marketing campaign. It was nice of Bethesda not to send either of these games to die.

Bethesda had a pretty great year, considering their only internal output for 2014 was The Elder Scrolls Online.

From Nintendo via GamesBeat:

"Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold 1.2M copies in the U.S. and is the 10th Nintendo 3DS game to sell at least 1M units in the U.S. Also, through the first 10 months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by 47 percent and 84 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013."

Smash sold 485,000 in October. Some of that was digital.

Figured it would do at least reasonably well. First big exclusive in some time and it had a decent marketing push.

Its a racing game.

In the US

that's not named Mario Kart.

i still fail to see how it would have done well tbh (especially with the SKU grouping).

also doubt people were that thirsty and if they were the online stuff plus reviews squandered the rest of that

Drive Club released on Oct 7 and didn't chart but it's probably do to poor marketing - I didn't see any commercials for this game and I watch a lot of TV...

That and:

Bad reviews
Broken online
Bad word of mouthy due to reviews and broken online
It being a driving game not named Gran Turismo

No. They survived Motorstorm Apocalypse, they will survive this.
Will they survive MotorStorm Apocalypse AND Driveclub?
One was a bomba, the second one a bomba + broken.
What's next? The disc broken in two halves, when you open your sealed copy of their next game?

Smash 3DS would have moved an additional 500k units this month.

I thought so too, but we do not know the whole story. Given the size of the team, I have to wonder if Sony's penny pinching meant not enough resources/expertise.

Oh absolutely, we have no clue what led to all the DC issues, unless I missed a big story. That said, someone is going to have to take the fall for this and I doubt it will a Sony exec or someone like that. It's going to be the studio, if anyone at all.

Sony + Grand Theft Auto V will win November.

Not only that but here is what will also win them November: Far Cry 4, Call of Dury Advanced Warfare, and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Remember people, it's third parties that make the consoles now, not first party games. And if games like the ones I mentioned sell better on the PS4, it's going to be a PS4 win.

Halo MCC is not going to make or break for Microsoft as much as people think here.

Sunset not charting is surprising, DC not charting is expected. I hope evo don't get dismantled because of this, Sony and Evo did not handle the launch very well. I haven't touched the game since ethe first week it was released.

DriveClub is an amazing game, I just can't understand people saying its bad because the online is broken.

They have updated the game 5 (6?) times now to improve the situation. Its not like they aren't trying.

My guesses...
250k retail, 150k digital and 10k bundled.
Honestly close to 500k does not sound like a bomb for a new IP.
I am betting 300k-500k with all copies counted.

i'm sure it did okay in terms of making money but considering the amount of advertising they did for that thing and the fact that it won't sell nearly as well in europe, i'm not sure that they are all that happy with its performance.

Wii U HW should be around 68K then.

Need to look up last month's Smash.

What happened to Alien Isolation? I heard that it wasn't doing great but I would have never imagined The Evil Within charting higher. Also really happy The Evil Within is doing well.

Good for Smash and The Evil Within. Glad NHL is the only sports title not to chart. Unless it normally falls off in it's second month, it seems people caught on quick to the lack of features.

I'm surprised about Sunset Overdrive and Bayonetta not charting though.
