Media Create Sales: Week 45, 2014 (Nov 03 - Nov 09)

Nah, it was Japan-only, they didn't mention the West at all.

What, YW2.5 got more pre-orders than both versions of YW2?! o_O
Good numbers for Smash, and release is still quite far away.
EOU2 seems to be doing well too.... really good news for Atlus :)
Pokémon is doing great, too.

YW2.5 is really crazy. EO has a very solid fanbase.

numbers you can find by yourself, it's in the OP and just use a calculator to subtract Vita YTD 2014 to YTD 2013

and you asked for Vita numbers and now you talk about "3DS selling more than Vita"...

we both know actually Vita YTD 2014 from 2013 are better (still positive numbers) than 3DS YTD 2014 from 2013 (very negative numbers), because that's what you asked in the beginning and that was the meaning of my answer

I don't get your aggressive attitude; you reported a lot of interesting comparisons (something that anyone could "find by him/herself in the OP", to be fair), so I was asking to make one for PSV as well; it is nice to discuss about sales in a sales-thread :)

Until a few weeks / months ago, PSV seemed to track WAY better than 2013, but now it's losing quickly steam; it might even end up to have a lower YTD wrt 2013, which is quite curious and show how Sony doesn't really bother. Also, you brought the 3DS into the discussion by writing "it's in a better situation than 3DS", when I was just asking about PSV :p

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
1) TV ratings don't mean much. I've been looking at those for quite a while (even before the Youkai Watch anime started, actually), and while the Youkai Watch ratings have always been excellent, those for Pokémon XY have remained stable. I haven't seen any sudden drop due to YW. Besides, you can't really compared the two, as both shows don't air at the same time, and therefore aren't competing against the same stuff.

2) Yeah, I saw that McDonalds stuff, and thought 'Damn, TPC probably isn't very happy about that, ha ha'. Now to see how many years they're going to go with YW.

3) What does NB results have to do with Pokémon?

Honestly, it's too early to say anything about YW vs Pokémon for the time being, but it's clear TPC is going to have to get more aggressive in the future (bisonyes.gif). Though for the time being, Pokémon got a pretty major advantage: they're popular all around the world, whereas YW is pretty much a 100% japanese phenomenom for the moment (and still in the growing phase, with results à la booming start-up).

I don't think it's too early for a comparison between Yokai Watch vs Pokemon because that's what it is being compared to here in Japan - a competitor to Pokemon.

Pokemon has a huge retail presence, but Yokai Watch is eating up alot of that space - it's a much different scenery from last year.

TV ratings are important. Both companies are competing for the same audience: kids. Currently, Pokemon has far less reach than Yokai Watch.

Albeit a new generation, the Pokemon movie experienced a 15% drop in viewings comparatively to last year, and merchandise sales have also experienced such a drop, if not more (Takara Tomy experienced decreased sales in Pokemon; yet Yokai Watch merchandise boomed for Bandai).

Kids in school are speaking about Yokai Watch more than they do about Pokemon; hence why TPC have been aggressive in their overseas expansion this year.

I'm happy that TPC have found success with ORAS both in Japan and overseas, but it's not looking like Level-5 will stop the Yokai Watch train with both the movie + YW2.5 planned in December.

Edit: I wish TPC would release their financial statements - instead we have to go with yearly retail sales report from http://www.licensemag.com/license-global

Well Pokemon X/Y are on their way to be the worst selling mainline Pokemon entries in Japan (though probably the best sellers on the 3DS, except perhaps Animal Crossing's insane legs), unlikely to sell 5M (probably stuck in the 4M range). The game also hasn't charted in the top 30 in a long while whereas the original YW and YW2 have been charting with no difficulty. Those are some signs I guess.
I think the fact that yw even exists on the 3ds far outweighs any negative consequences due to its success, and saying x/y is the worst selling mainline is a bit too negative, since its still selling 4m+.

just wait til yw x pokemon crossover comes out, we'll see how much yw is hurting pokemon =p

The only reason DQ on PS4 isn't a sure thing is that it breaks DQ's tradition of being on the best selling platform. Even if we exclude mobile -- which we really shouldn't, given how popular mobile platforms are in Japan -- PS4 is dwarfed by 3DS, and even outside that it's just not a popular console by any historical measure.

Of course, if everyone and their mother jumps on board (FF + DQ + MGS + RE etc. etc.) then third parties can sort of force adoption, but that's a sort of awkward way to go about it. It seems far more reasonable to simply go to the platforms consumers actually want, and not force them to buy a system they apparently aren't as interested in. They did that with Xbox 360, as well, and it just felt like they were trying to climb up a hill when it would have made far more sense to go the easy route and just make their games for the Wii.

With all that said, it seems pretty clear at this point DQ will be on the PS4, breaking the traditional "most popular platform" routine.
i don't think dq being on the highest selling platform has as much weight as it use to, considering dqx did come out the wii even though the ds still had a higher userbase, in hindsight no one can blame se, since the wii was selling gangbusters at the time.

i don't think it's guaranteed the ps4 will be the the first platform, or even exclusive, the userbase is far too low at this point, this would actually be a riskier move than putting dqx on the wii, even within the next two years with ps4 games coming out, the userbase won't be significantly higher than it is right now, the market simply doesn't buy consoles the way they use to any longer.

If anything DQ XI will be multiplatform. A big DQ exec at some point pretty much said it doesn't make sense for the series to remain on single platform.
yea i think this is more likely than the ps4 being the exclusive platform.

it's in a better situation than 3DS
selling slightly more than shit doesn't mean it's in a better situation, especially when it'll probably be down by the end of the year compared to 2013.

I don't think it's too early for a comparison between Yokai Watch vs Pokemon because that's what it is being compared to here in Japan - a competitor to Pokemon.

yw is eating pokemon's lunch, but at least it's paying nintendo for the lunch.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
A few weeks ago, I documented what was Chaos Rings III's situation on Google Play, in order to get something remotely similar to an idea about the amount of downloads corresponding to specific placements in charts.

But there's a problem: the game seems to be a major failure on Google Play

October 17th, 428th Overall - 50 < x < 100 copies sold
October 18th, 65th Overall - 100 < x < 500 copies sold
October 19th, 36th Overall - 500 < x < 1,000 copies sold
October 20th, 24th Overall - 500 < x < 1,000 copies sold
October 21st, 16th Overall - 1,000 < x < 5,000 copies sold
...
November 12th, 26th Overall - 1,000 < x 5,000 copies sold

Overall = Paid Download Chart, since CRIII is a paid app.

Here's the graph about its rankings since launch, Paid Download Chart

vVphwYD.png

The game has been steadily around 12-15th in there, and just recently it started going down, out of top 20.

This also means that the average amount of downloads per day, starting from the day after the game reached 1,000 downloads, is lower than 182 downloads.

And this is the situation on the Grossing Chart side (which includes both Free and Paid apps)

October 18th, 369th Overall - 100 < x < 500 copies sold --> Yen 280,000 < x < Yen 1,400,000 grossed
October 19th, 288th Overall - 500 < x < 1,000 copies sold --> Yen 1,400,000 < x < Yen 2,800,000 grossed
October 20th, 238th Overall - 500 < x < 1,000 copies sold --> Yen 1,400,000 < x < Yen 2,800,000 grossed
October 21st, 197th Overall - 1,000 < x < 5,000 copies sold --> Yen 2,800,000 < x < Yen 14,000,000 grossed
...
November 12th, 321st Overall - 1,000 < x < 5,000 copies sold --> Yen 2,800,000 < x < Yen 14,000,000 grossed

It saw a consistent increase for the first days, then a slow drop, then a more pronounced slowdown starting from October 29th, some steadiness at the beginning of November with a sudden rise a few days ago, but now it's falling again.

Daily grossing average from the day after crossing 1,000 - less than Yen 509,000

Note: The game was not featured on the Google Play Home Page, either on Google Play, and it has 326 reviews.

Despite not being useful to get an idea about actual amount of downloads / grossing, here's the situation on iOS

iPhone Paid Download Chart

It started high (6th), but it didn't last long, and the slowdown happend in a little amount of time, and now it's outside top 100

iPhone Grossing Chart

Much more dramatic negative trend than downloads, with even some days where...it was completely absent from Grossing Charts? Don't know what that could represent, honestly.

What about iPad?

iPad Paid Download Chart

Up and down, up and down, up and down, with a tendency towards going down. In the past few days
65th -> 32nd -> 63rd -> 46th -> 69th -> (currently) 52nd. Quite a roller-coaster.

iPad Grossing Chart

It seems it's faring better than on iPhone, especially when the comparison is about last two weeks, but like in the corresponding iPhone chart, there are days where the game didn't chart at all, including yesterday.

Tomorrow, I'll do a new analysis on Skylock, a game that seems to be doing pretty well, after all.

Next week will be interesting indeed :) Advance Warfare, Pro Evolution Soccer 2015, Captain Toad, WiiU bundle and Pink Vita, many good things released at the same time.

glad someone got it. I have already said the safest option is going 3ds. i just feel like they should give dq another shot in the west before throwing the towel in and going back to being japan only.

i know it probably isn't exactly a great example but something like valkyria chronicles just made more money on steam than cod and AC. do you think Sega thought it would sell this well? Hell no. it was a shot in the dark and it worked out for them. dq probably has more name recognition than vc and a new hd dq could work out. while i believe it will be on ps4 i think when they bring it to the west it will be on pc and xbone as well unless Sony locked it up and are going to help them market the game out in the west.
Yeah, i think it shall be interesting to see how a Dragon Quest game can do in the west again. Like the market is right now, i dont think it will sell a lot in the west, but who knows how the market is in some years from now. Either its much of the same or Dragon Quest XI will be interesting for many people for whatever reason (maybe good word to mouth for example). I guess it also depends a lot on what marketing push it gets. Right now, we dont even know which platform Dragon Quest XI will be for though, so its hard to say.

How do you mean with that Valkyria Chronicles made more money on Steam than COD and AC? Was there any info on this?

Tomorrow, I'll do a new analysis on Skylock, a game that seems to be doing pretty well, after all.

On an interesting note, Nexon is currently trying to decide if they're going to record an impairment on Gloops based on the success of their six upcoming title (of which Skylock might be one, I'm unsure): http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-11-13-nexon-exceeds-revenue-and-profit-forecasts-in-q3

GamesIndustry.biz said:
That decline seems to be down to the performance of Gloops Inc., the mobile developer Nexon acquired for almost ¥36.5 billion in October 2012 with the specific aim of gaining a firmer footing in Japan. The acquisition had an immediate and somewhat flattering impact on Nexon's regional revenues, but the situation looks different now that the dust has settled.

In a presentation to investors, Nexon included a possible impairment loss on Gloops as a "potential risk" for its Q4 results. If that happens, Nexon will cancel a planned year-end dividend of ¥5 per share.

Gloops has six games scheduled for release in the quarter - "Their subsequent performance will play an important role in our determination of whether to record an impairment loss." As a matter of record, Nexon put the balance of Gloops' goodwill at ¥31 billion ($268 million) as of the end of September 2014.

Pretty much everything else at the company is successful right now (in terms of things that they've both invested in and are actually out - their Western games are still in development for example), so it will be interesting to see if they can turn Gloops around. They have solid mobile performance from Nexon proper in Korea, but this was their bid to get success in Japan.

That's what I thought, but I'm not really that familar with comgnet to be honest

Smash Wii U had about 26 preorders a couple months before its release before they even technically opened up preorders or had a solid release date for the game. I assume the same for Bloodborne.

How is Toad's an OK start? Because it's a holiday title? Any notes on Wii U bundle sales? And what's the problem with OP games on the 3DS... Unlimited World Red (which was a fun OP game imo) sold ok and now this starts selling badly?

One Piece: Super Grand Battle X not selling well is surprising. The game looks like a lot of fun.

It's not that they have many options creating sequels unless they want to burn sales of next gen handheld entries. Big sellers

Mario Kart
Smash Bros.
Animal Crossing
2D Mario
3D Mario
Tomodachi

are out of the question.

That leaven out only Pokemon: Pokemon Z for 2015, Pokemon (remake?) for 2016.

For B-category sellers:
Mario Party: it has lost the power it had
Zelda: Majora's Mask remake?
Kirby: maybe for 2016

Like I said before thay have to experience with smaller hits, new or sequels, if they want to continue supporting the system
sorry for digging up old posts but i want to reply to this.

i think a 3d mario for 3ds isn't out of the question, only because sm3dl is more of a hybrid rather than your traditional 3d mario, something like galaxy 3 is likely next year if nintendo wants to capitalize on one of their big franchise

but as a whole nintendo should be releasing more b-tier franchises next year, since the 3ds is probably not far from its successor, but the best thing for nintendo is to create new franchises in hopes of creating a smash hit, b-tier games won't push 3ds sales and they won't be effective for next-gen where new ips will be more effective.

all their big franchises are out (besides metroid :/ and yes i know its not a "big" franchise) so they can afford to experiment with more new ips.

oh and i think pikmin 3ds will be next year also, going by miyamoto's recent comments.

seems like 300 preorders missing from Pokemon ORAS compared to the previous entries are moved on YW2.5
how could you possibly know this?

No word about how the MK8 bundle is selling.

Too add too that the blogger says Captain Toad lacked enough time frame for retailers to order bulk to Ninty, so if you take that into account it isn't that bad.

As for One Piece he sees it getting into big trouble..

Captain Toad will see better in the weeks leading to December - it's going to sell well.

I'm personally banking on 200-250k by year-end.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
One Piece look great but they are competing with Smash Bros. 3DS right now and after nearly 2 million, it might take a whole before the thirst for this kind of game arrives anytime soon. Still hope OP will do well once the holiday sales crank up.

they should have released it around late december, gives it a bit of breathing room from smash bros, but still in holiday period.

It is surprising, but I don't know how much a trouble could be for Bamco. The game surely was cheap to develop. Anyway, I guess one of the main reasons might be the presence of One Piece Musou, which was very successful and might have satisfied the IP fans.

that would be great. it is somehow a new spin-off-IP that could benefit (in terms of possible further iteration) from good sales.

Smash was released two months ago. I think there has been enough time between releases. It's not like this was going to sell anywhere near 400k.
Maybe it's just that interest in these kind of One Piece games is declining. We'll see where it lands after the holidays

Terrible timing for Bamco... they should've released SPB last year, and Unlimited Red this year instead.

Then the same people would be saying that MH4G was hurting Unlimited Red.

50./00. [3DS] Bravely Default: For the Sequel [Ultimate Hits] <RPG> (Square Enix) {2014.08.07} (¥2.700)

You still think Bravely Second won't debut with big numbers?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Smash is still selling, which is the main point but I agree that the interest of OP might just be declining in general.

Captain Toad will see better in the weeks leading to December - it's going to sell well.

I'm personally banking on 200-250k by year-end.
On the console where Tropical Freeze sold 100k? Doubt it.

First we must see the big numbers Phantasy Star Nova will do.

Pirate Warriors 3 will show if there is decline for One Piece in general.

PS Nova will bomb, in my opinion (i.e. will do less than expected). But I do think BS will be stronger than the predecessor. It gained a cult-following and it is one of those cases where the good word-of-mouth persisted over time, similar to Demon's Souls -> Dark Souls. This is shown by the sales of For the Sequel and its budget versione.

Pirate Warriors 3 will show if there is decline for One Piece in general.

In my opinion, it is more a decreased interest in games like Grand Battle, rather than in the games themselves.
