Digital Foundry vs GTAV on XONE - performance analysis

Marginally better? I dont know, by that gif the difference seems too much. And 1080p/720p? Im not sure if I know what youre talking about.
Anyway, I think I wont be getting neither PS4 or XB1 versions... The most important to me is the online, and it seems there was no improvements over last gen (except for number of players).
Did you even read what you wrote?
Maybe the first multiplatform game I wont be getting on XB1.
Why did those other differences did not make you want to buy multiplatform on PS4 before?

Enjoying the foliage and god-rays too. I spent time just walking around looking at things.

Both are 1080p, both are 30fps. With the Xbox One suffering some MINOR fps issues that would hardly be a ptoblem, by what DF said.

By that grass comparison gif though the PS4 version seems considerably better in that grass density. If every place in both version suffers from such difference thats very noticiable.

I still cant understand whats your point. Maybe Im missing something.

Im talking about GTA V. Other games need proper analysis... Overall 900p vs 1080p is not a big deal to me.

I want GTAV very much but I just moved across country and things are tight.
Maybe I'll trade Alien Isolation for this while the trade value is high, lack of grass be damned.

My honest opinion is that the PS4 version has too much grass. On the One I can play it because I'm reminded that it's a videogame. On the PS4 version the grass makes it look too realistic, I might forget that I'm playing a videogame and then it wont be fun any more. When you combine the fact that the PS4 has too much realism with the better controller of the One and the fact that all of my friends play on One, the choice to me is clear.

You must have felt really smart while typing this, hn?

Frame rate difference in Tomb Raider was not noticeable without "proper" analysis? 720p vs 1080p difference in Meatal Gear and COD ghost was not noticeable without "proper" analysis? What the hell is proper analysis any way? You would have known about foliage difference in GTA without someone making that gif?

You know what? I fucking give up. I can see that I'm not going to win here.

Even though the Xbone lacks grass, it handles parts of the city better.

The PS4 struggles in this area of the Digital Foundry video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxzCRlH3BOw#t=656

Compared to the Xbone, which has a few dips but overall handles the same area better:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxJCBgcX_jk#t=665

Eh, I don't know if that really demonstrates what you want it to. You saw PS4 dip once (struggle? Come on now) briefly but hold 30fps more consistently, but you saw XBO dipping several more times over a longer period. And in either case the footage is never an exact match so it's never a 1:1 comparison, and performance is close enough that you can't really make a claim like you are.

Digital Foundry's own analysis was that they both hold 30 well, and any brief drops are seen more on XBO.

haven't gotten too far in PS4, but it so much easier on the eyes, not noticing drops either. (PS3 version was unplayable). I was hoping they'd go for 60 fps with this, but I can't complain, this is the most stable game they've released IIRC

either way, they didn't do a very good job in the AA department. Jaggies everywhere still. It'll be interesting to see how the PC version turns out.. Hopefully I can get a clean 1080p60 with good AA on this 970.

Also, maybe it's my eyes, but the actual lighting looks better on PS4 it seems. Now it could very well just be a matter of time of day, sure. But it's not the color tints or light harshness, but more the lighting "quality"... Looks more natural to me. #shrug

Every time anyone ever says this, I look at the pictures and think 'no, too dark'.

Maybe the Xbone version is set after there has been a harsh drought. It's an artistic choice, not a technical limitation!

AA coverage is inconsistent. Some stuff is very clean. Power lines look damn near perfect, leaves in trees look great, distant buildings look good. Some times cars look great, other times you see shimmering. Same for characters. The AA solution seems to have issues with alpha textures, so stuff like foliage on the ground and modeled hair gets a nasty cross hatch-like pattern at times.

The other main IQ issue is carried over from last gen. Whatever technology they have to fade distant objects in, or to swap between LOD models, or whatever it is, often leaves some distant objects (stuff like telephone/light poles, the metal structure holding up a billboard, etc) almost looking like they are interlaced, like it's rendering every other line of pixels on the object before you get close enough and it fully materializes. It seems better than it did on next gen, thanks to a farther LOD and higher resolution, but it's still ugly at times.

Also a lower anisotropic filtering level. But again better than last gen.

It'll be curious to see if both versions have these same issues or if one of them handles it better.

LOL! Whats wrong with you? I think YOU didnt read what I wrote. Let me explain step by step for you.

1- When I said:
Maybe the first multiplatform game I wont be getting on XB1.
I meant that, from every multiplatform game I bought, none of them, till this date, was for PS4 (except when I did not have the XB1 yet). And guess what? I did not buy Tomb Raider, neither Metal Gear and neiher CoD Ghosts!!

2- When I said:
Is this true?
Where that comparison came from? If true... thats a big difference. (...) But still... I need confirmation on this.
I wanted to make it clear, that I wasnt really sure about how much I could take that gif in consideration. And thats because of those factors, that I will list, to help you again:
a) I dont know if thats a thing only in this area on that gif, or if it is a general thing.
b) I dont know where did that comparison came from to know if I really can trust it (but now, by what I've read, it seems I can believe in it).
c) If the difference in that gif, is representative of the game in general, then the PS4 version may get considerably advantage in details in many areas. But still, I'm not sure about it, thats why "I need confirmation on this".

3- 1080p vs 900p was never a big deal to me alone. Neither some minor frame rate issues. That said, when those are the differences, I prefer the XB1 version because of friends, snap center and achievements. But thats just my particular reason.

I hope that now you understand. But if not, I can try to help you again.

Damn you only got half the list. Do you by chance like the controller and os better? Does Sony arrogance bother you?

This fanboy shit is getting out of control. Thank god for DF. I can't wait for them to break down the differences so people can drop the bullshit.

I do like the controllers of both PS4 and XB1 almost the same. And I do like the XB1 OS better. Sony arrogance doesnt bother me. But why exactly? Care to explain?

You can simply say PS4 version is superior ;)

Been playing on X1 for a few hours. Love it so far, I never played it on previous gen so I have nothing to compare it to but I think it looks fantastic and is super smooth.

So there is a difference in lighting?

I knew something was off with the XB1 footage so far. Good to know my eyes didnt play ticks.

Also mods should make a rule about going into tech comparison threads and posting that this shit doesn't matter because all my friends play on my system of choice anyway or the controller fits my dainty little girl hands / giant big foot hands better.

That stuff goes without saying anyway and it just drags the level of discourse down. Sort like Port Begging was before that was outlawed on here.

Or I dont know... maybe they want a easy way to weed out some of the crazies.

My impressions of both PS4 and XB1 versions after playing both side by side for the last day:

*They both look very simular – but there is a visual advantage to PS4. PS4 seems to have slightly better lighting, more pronounced foliage, and (in my eyes) clothing detail. It doesn't seem to 'shimmer' as much as the XB1 either (slightly better aliasing on PS4 perhaps?)

*Frame rate appears to be very close. The PS4 again has a *slight* advantage, as I have noticed the 'juddering' that DF talks about with the XB1. It's most noticeable when rotating around your character, or anywhere that the camera rotates fairly quick. HOWEVER;

*The XB1 seems to handle busy scenes (lots of traffic, explosions) better than PS4. There is noticeable judder/dropped frames on PS4 in these scenarios, XB1 is almost always 'smoother' in this regard.

*The PS4'S initial loading screen (with the sirens and Rockstar logos) is noticeably chopper than XB1, not sure why that is. XB1 is slightly quicker to load SP (both consoles have the standard HDD).

*The XB1's controller feels a bit more responsive that the DS4, although adjusting the sensitivity in game for the DS4 largely eliminates the advantage to XB1.

*Online with PS4 has been great (although lobbies are still pretty small), XB1 constantly puts me into lobbies by myself - but I'm aware that there has been issues with online.

Thats about It So Far! !

I don't understand what the debate is here.

The PS4 game is clearly the superior version. If you own both consoles and you get this for the Xbox One you have to be mad.

That's so true though.
Most people probably can't even see extra foliage anyway cos their eyes just aren't sensitive to it.
I reckon it would probably be really difficult to see on a TV screen smaller than 65" anyhow (unless you sit very close, obviously)

There is definitely something going on in the ps4 version. Whether it's frame drops or jacked up frame pacing, when you're driving sometimes it feels like it's around 25fps.

I have noticed the judder/frame drops when there is a lot of detail such as a lot of cars and shadows from objects.

There's more to it then that. I guess its not a big deal at all to admit that the PS4 version is in fact the superior version, but it isnt a big deal either to admit that a console ecosystem involves more then slightly better graphics. I dont understand why some people dont understand that.

I know some friends who have both the PS4 and the XB1, and they usually go for the cheaper copy or, even with the same price for the "inferior" version to play online with other specific friends or because they like that system more for whatever reason. Edit: And its just a personal matter, that go for both ways.

Imho, if to buy console games you should always go to the slightly better version, then its easier to just buy a PC.

Not really. I have 7.6 billion friends and they are ALL getting it on Xbox One so I will want to play with them. Plus I will be snapping NFL Fantasy on Xbox One (the best way to play/watch™) while playing with my 7.6 billion friends. Also Sony Arrogance.

I have both consoles and I got it for Xbox One. Queue achievements and friends, etc. Although I like DS4 more than XB1 controller.

Truthfact is, it's faster to get Xbox One version, since I can download at 150-600Mbps from Xbox Live, on PS4 it would take me 1-2 days to download game with how slow PSN is for me. I've ordered physical copy from Amazon for PS4 for "game collection", but I probably won't play or even open it, as with almost all games this gen. I just keep buying them digitally and play them on Xbox, while waiting for PS4 physical copy to arrive (3-4 days), by the time PS4 copy arrives I am too invested into Xbox version.
