Destiny: Exotic weapons fixed.... and then broken.

New info.

In order for your current exotics to be relevent with the new level cap and expansion.... you have to trade them in and purchase the new version with 7000 Glimmer and an Exotic Shard (which must be purchased with strange coins.)

The weapon's progress will then reset.

New changes are coming to Xur this weekend and he will effectively make you reupgrade all of your exotic armor and weapons

Sawce

"You’ll need three things. First, you need to own the original version of that exotic item, and turn it in to exchange for the upgraded version. It doesn’t matter if this old version of the item is brand new or fully upgraded. To complete the upgrade, you’ll also need to turn in an exotic shard. This recently introduced new material is available for purchase for seven strange coins from Xur, or by breaking down another existing exotic item in your inventory. Finally, each exotic upgrade costs a hefty dose of cash – around 7000 glimmer as of my playthrough of the expansion in mid-November. After turning all three of these things into Xur, he’ll hand you a brand new version of your item with a higher defense or attack value cap.

It’s important to note that this process resets the upgrades on your exotic item, but you’ll now have a new higher damage or defense cap to work towards – so you’ll need to decide if you’d rather keep your fully upgraded old version of a weapon or armor piece, or start over. With that said, the process of upgrading exotic items is now faster, and does not require ascendant materials. Instead, the last slot requires one additional exotic shard, as revealed in Monday’s patch."

Ah, the Bungie motto: "Two steps forward, one step back."

And that article doesn't mention legendiaries - which means vanilla legendaries will not be upgradeable and will basically be worthless after next week.

What?

But my Thorn is already upgraded

I mean it has 9 shots now.... wtf?

So far the adjustements to exotics seem to be in effect

Are these just for upgrading them beyond the original scope? Like for lvl cap 32 content?

Wow what a crappy move so it will take days to farm the glimmer i need. No need to farm materials anymore now glimmer i think i am out.

Sweet I will start this tonight. I'm not surprised people on here are bitching but if you are telling me I can turn in a current exotic and get it back but be able to make it more effective then I am in. Sure beats it being useless and waiting for another drop to get a weapon up and running.

My helm will drop down but thankfully my exotic guns aren't too high. Still annoying. Should just apply to the final column.

They could have just given us another "node" in the upgrade tree that requires another exotic shard to get it up to The Dark Below level. Not reset the damn thing.

Hopefully, this is what Deej meant by misinformation. I don't mind blowing some coins on my old weapons. Re-leveling them is way too much of a grind to bother with.

I don't agree that this breaks exotics. The base dmg stays the same (at 300 or 302) once you've "prestiged" the exotic so the only things you lose are the perks to re-level it, which seems like a decent trade-off to keep an exotic that you really like on the same level of the new high level gear.

So if I'm reading this correctly, you'll need 2 shards now to max out an old exotic. 1 to convert it to a new exotic, 1 finish the last node right?

Are you seriously going to defend this? Did you seriously write this. Is this post real?

Wtf. I guess it is a good thing I didn't spend a single exotic shard yet...

Sigh.

Um it better be a substantial attack or defense upgrade because if it is just 20-30, then screw all that grinding. I will just do it one weapon at a time and slowly without hindering any fun I'd get out of the expansion.

I highly doubt that it will be big enough to make weapons useless.

Geez, it really sounds like that you actually enjoy this kind of crap..

it's an optional upgrade to increase max attack for those who want to do so, the price is a shard, glimmer and exp levelling the weapon again.

sounds like normal to me.

So will these upgraded exotics go past light level 30? Also what are Radiant Materials? Just saw new raid gear will break down into that.

Normally you would just get a whole new tier of items and your current stuff would be trashed. This allows your old exotics to be recommissioned for current tier. I much prefer this than having to go and get all new tier exotics.

Wow... what a confusing process. Why not just make new excotic items that are higher level?

Oh wait that means more/new content and that's to much work.

So sad about this game (and Bungie). Would have loved to see a more fleshed out game world with more story.

EDIT: Also this perfectly shows what my expression was when reading this...

Well that is bullshit. I was thinking of hopping on again (I downloaded half the patch but then had to stop because I wanted to play smash online and I havne't gone back to finish the download). I was excited to try out the improved Bad Juju and other exotics I had but it feels a little bullshit having to trade them in to get the patched versions. Like, why are there two versions of them? The patch was supposed to, you know, patch the exotics to make them feel more unique and fun but instead it adds another layer of grind to those that have already grinded out a few exotics. I was thinking at worst the upgrades would reset if you didn't do it all the way or something.

Normally when a patch is introduced to rebalance existing weapons it applies to the ones you already have. When they tried nerfing weapons it wasn't a nerf to all new ones after the patch, it was to all existing ones. This just seems like a way to try and get extra playtime from those that already played enough to get a few exotics and (maybe) upgrade them.

Okay, so: Base Thorn now has 9 shots. You're still getting those nine shots.

But, you know how you earn XP to upgrade your gun to get the DOT effect, or extra damage? THAT is going to reset. Just the upgrades. New Base Thorn is still going to have those 9 shots and better PVE damage and stuff, but you'll have to get more XP, and at the end of the day, you'll have higher damage than you can currently upgrade to right now.

My TLW is maxed out by in-game rules. It's a level 30-ish gun, a 300 weapon. With the thing, I have to go re-earn my 300, BUT... now I can get up to 331.

The new exotics ARE higher level. This will bring old exotics in line with new exotics so that they don't become outclassed.

I'd be okay with that too!! To be honest though I wasn't expecting to be able to just turn in my stuff and get the higher level version so in my head I'm still winning. I was fully expecting to have to level vanguard and buy a couple pieces and level those pieces, wait for xur to have a new piece I wanted and pay and upgrade, or have one drop from a nightfall.

At this point as far as neogaf majority and destiny are concerned anything they do is the wrong move.

Pro tip : all weapons have the same dmg cap from any extension past lvl 20 Only apply multiplier dmg between your level and your target level.

No need for tiers and out of date weapons or stuff like that.

But nooooooooo they had to pull a stupid trick out of their asses

Yes, it's good that we can take our favorite exotics and keep them relevant. It's the process to do so that is pretty much shit.

Love the game and play it almost every day but not sure I can survive this new grind on my exotics. Hopefully they change it up based on community response.

Give me back the exotic with 3 upgrade nodes removed or add a new node that will upgrade me to DLC attack levels....anything except a full reset.

What's wrong with that? I assumed like every other fucking MMO ever that all of our gear would be worthless by the time the next Raid rolls around, if they let us upgrade weapons that's great. It doesn't take that long to upgrade weapons as it is.

Sounds fine to me.

The only thing I don't like is it seems there's no way to reforge legendary armor or arms to keep them relevant with the new cap. I'd like to keep my Raid armor look but reforge it to the 32 cap, even if it stays slightly below new raid legendaries and exotics.

Exotic reforging is fine, unless you want to never use your weapon again stuck at a lower level as the cap is increased.
