No Man's Sky info from Game Informer

Jeesh there's still ppl in this thread saying the games vague, how much more do you need to know ffs anyways the ambition of this game is awesome I hope they can pull it off

For real. It's getting extremely obnoxious. The game wasn't even vague with the info that was already out before.

So every planet has robots on them? Lame. Not only does that not make any sense, considering the scope of the game, it also kills my immersion. I want to be the first thing to set foot on some of those planets.

no coop ok, but let me impact the universe if I'm doing stuff

For instance, if I'm on a bounty and another player sees my ship and destroys it, let him collect the cash.

It's cool that you can see two members of 65daysofstatic on the video.

Your FHRITP avatar kills me every time I see it lol

They've said large-scale changes such a decimating a planets ecosystem or stripping it bare, would be reflected in the shared universe, but I hear what you're saying. The co-op/MP aspect has been particularly muted because that's not really what they're focusing on or framing the experience as (which is fine by me), but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a bit deeper than what they're letting on.

I get where they are going with the no chat route..

They don't want people to clan up or anything and basically "run" a certain area. We all know this would happen.. Show up in a certain area and you have 20 people waiting for you to steal your things. I wouldn't like that type of gameplay

I haven't read anything about robot companion? Where did it say this?

Maybe I misread/misremembered, but I'm sure one of the earlier previews said you have your own probot.

If I don't, I will have to make a TARS to put in front of the TV and endlessly say things like '75% humour' to it.

quick google search for key terms puts this thread and your post as the top result lol, so probably remembering wrong haha

To all those peepz complaining about combat....stfu! Game would be hella boring if all you did was go around and look at shit.

Also FPS combat is another huge surprise, I thought it was only going to be combat while in your ship, damn this adds another huge dimension to the gameplay. Imagine flying around with your mates and you spot an ominous looking cave so you land, gear up and set off to explore.

This game sounds like a dream come true! I am an astronomy NUT and exploring new planets with different flora and fauna definately would be the highlight for sure but it won't mean anything if there is no danger/risk reward system....that is why you need combat.

Finally. Now I can reread the article in peace. Reddit covered other stuff. I will fill in any gaps.

I love what I read, I am an action gamer first and foremost, I do not like walking simulators, this game sounds awesome.

The game would be just fine without combat, if that's what they wanted to build. No game needs to be tailored for all tastes.

FPS combat was shown literally 34 seconds into NMS' reveal trailer last year.

Imagine flying around with your mates and you spot an ominous looking cave so you land, gear up and set off to explore.

You will not do this in NMS. Why are you doing this to yourself? Would it be cool? Hell yes. But that is not what this game is, and that is totally ok.

Oh man, maybe that means they're involved beyond just the trailer music.

That E3 trailer was seriously one of the most hype things I've ever seen/heard. Still gives me goosebumps re-watching it.

Cannot wait for NMS. Thanks for the info, OP.

It doesn't sound far off from what is described as possible.

If you can meet up with others (admittedly not your closest of friends) then what is stopping you and your group from exploring that cave?

I didn't see trailer from last year, just some devs talking and a few short clips. Didn't see any combat of any kind though.....saw some dinosuars....weee!

Yea I know there won't be co-op....maybe in the traditional sense but I managed to team up with mates in the souls games by co-ordinating our positions. So as long as the game does have other players you may be able to find a workaround by meeting at a certain galaxy/planet/space station then meeting at a nearby tree or something. How can they stop you from doing that? As soon as you find your mate you fly around and explore and do party chat (outside of the game). Should be ok I think.

I don't see the problem with having combat, just aviod it if it doesn't interest you, why leave it out of the game when 99% of games have combat in some form.

As a game designer, I'm also really confused by their messaging... I just have no idea why they didn't mute all the people out there by showing a quick gameplay video.

I have a problem with this statement. In about a day's time, Geoff's TGA will start and according to the list released, NMS will be shown in some fashion or another at the show. So, it is to be expected from this GI news that gameplay wouldn't be shown here. IMHO

TL;DR: Geoff's TGA will show footage of NMS, so chill out! Don't believe me? See this.

I don't remember seeing FPS before either. I thought they had mentioned no inventory...but I guess you have a gun? Does everyone have the same gun or are there multiple guns in a sort of inventory? Or maybe one gun that can be upgraded? I apologize if I've missed something obvious from the summary.

You're coming across randoms-- if at all-- hell, they're even saying that it'll be hard to tell whether it's human or AI-controlled. I think it's perfectly feasible to wonder about how you will personally approach encountering another player because of how rare they said that event would likely be, but this idea of meeting up with your friends and cavorting about has got to be tempered with the reality that the idea goes against a lot of what HG has been saying about what NMS is and isn't.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised they're including a way to track your friends on the galaxy map, and potentially a way to message them, since it'll help give a better sense of scope and scale of just how vast this space is going to be.

Think of it like a multi-tool. Something that can mine ore as well as scan plants and poke holes in troublesome lifeforms :) It definitely can be upgraded.

Examples?

Well the concept sounds a lot like the Elite series but with certain elements made more accessible and less complex (like the flying), but other elements made more complex by advances in technology. Might also share some things in common with Freelancer or the X series, though on a completely different scale of course.

Freeze-framing this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=8A6ffb1Snbk#t=71 It looks like there MIGHT be another weapon model, for a rifle or sniper weapon.

For a game with lots to explore and lots of hours to put in, a single weapon can get VERY boring. That was one of the big downsides to the ill-fated Shattered Horizon in my opinion. Others may disagree.

Scope is already being reigned in, predictably.

Enemies aren't procedural.

The robots aren't Robot mech things weren't even talked about before. No scope is being "reigned in." This only adds to it considering what we knew before.

Now if you were just one of those people making assumptions on what the game would be like without having actually looking up the already confirmed info and judging it based off of that, then I guess to you the scope would be "reigned in"

I think that's a great workaround if you are able to find one of your friends. I also think people are underestimating just how redonkulously vast the NMS galaxy is going to be. Maybe much later in the game, if you all make your way to the galactic core, then it'll be easier to meet up. But at the onset, when all the cool "i'm the first to check this shit out!" moments are happening, it'll likely be just you.

I don't see the problem with having combat, just aviod it if it doesn't interest you, why leave it out of the game when 99% of games have combat in some form.

Oh I don't see the problem with having combat in games either, other than it doesn't have to be implemented in order to make things interesting. Mr. Murray of HG has said that combat will absolutely be apart of NMS because the galaxy is a dangerous place and you are quite fragile. Need to make it to the core in one piece somehow.

Few extra stuff:

  • Devs decided against a galaxy completion percentage meter because it would remain hopelessly small.
  • The map has multiple zoom levels, the furthest one shows the entire galaxy. Next one allows you to fly through the stars and choose ones to scan. Scanning a star shows info on the solar system like if you may find special resources, how many planets. If this system has been discovered you see extra info like what class the space station is and which planets have been explored. You can zoom to planetary level next and if the planet was discovered you will see the marks of interest that were found.
  • Sean Murray, a dev, talks multiplayer. The map will show where your friends are and there maybe an in game messaging system but that is all for now. The first time you see another player is the first time you will realize what your character looks like "I think we will surprise people in terms of how they look." He says you only see them in a suit so you still don't know what is inside, "it still won't answer for people whether you are an alien or whether you are human or what you look like."
  • Hauling resources from one system to another can be profitable but you need to calculate how much fuel you are wasting to see if it is worth it.
  • No building of ships you can only buy what you see. So if you see a ship you like you can follow it and buy it at a trading post/station.
  • Various factions in the galaxy keep track of your actions and may respond with love or aggression depending on those actions.
  • Some trading posts have specific upgrades. Some stock lower level items, other high quality ones. So to upgrade something you need to locate the correct kind of trading post. Data from other players will help identify these. Otherwise you need to look around the points of interest and hope you find one.
  • Upgrades to three categories are available, suit, weapon and ships. Suit and weapons can be permanently upgraded. Ships cannot, you have to buy ships with whatever upgrades you want. Upgrades come in a scale of quality from 1 to 5.
  • Here is a partial list of upgrades:

Ships - Shields, laser beams, plasma shot, rapid fire shots, energy torpedo, wing (maneuverability), hull (additional stats shows if it allows ships to land in toxic areas, etc.), engine, hyperdrive, cargo space (also fuel), cloaking

Suit - shields, resource capacity, jetpack, air hazard, liquid hazard (defense against toxic, radioactive, etc)

Weapon - laser beam, energy shot, plasma grenade, scan distance, scan type (some stuff cant be scanned until upgraded)
  • There is a shared common player database showing all animals and planet life discovered.
  • The malevolent force robots are on SOME PLANETS. Sorry about that guys.
  • The are ancient robots left behind by who knows what. They are a constant, they will be different types but they will act the same way, you can use tactics you learn to defeat them. They describe it like Halo and its main types of enemies. "we discovered we needed something like that in the game. We're still experimenting with this quite a bit."
  • No early access or betas, they want it to be "finished" when it comes out.
  • Ship combat weapons have different uses. Lasers eat shields, plasmas melt hulls, torpedoes are super powerful but slow. You have to manage cooldowns, no ammo.
  • The portals need special weapon types to open, like a door in metroid. No clue what is on the other side, you cant take your ship. The goal is to explore as far as you can before needed to run back through the portal to safety.
  • The center of the galaxy according to the dev "in some ways its like a beginning. I am hoping it is a nice moment for them that they actually feel like not sharing..."

That is what I'm saying. You won't travel around the galaxy with your friends but as mentioned above, what stopping this from being Dark Souls and letting you fly around with strangers.

So glad they're still tooling with the robot enemy idea. As much as I love action games, I really don't want this to be an action first game where you always feel like there's an intelligent aggressive force against you at every step.

And the center of the galaxy is totally a wormhole to a new galaxy. basically New Game+. I called that months ago and I'm sticking with it. Complete with crazy 10 minute 2001 stargate sequence.
Either that or you unlock Half Life 3

When you read that stuff it sounds fantastic but as soon as you play it and you go through it, it might have a repetitive vibe to it, it would be neat if you organically build a story through your actions....like by doing something so frequently you unlock sometype of massive bounty hunter story arc with all the factions you've been messing with

that to me would be really impressive....it would help from feeling alone and give some direction to each action you take

The pictures are gorgeous, man this game looks awesome. One of the pictures says birds may point you to a point of interest. Planets in systems are closer than in reality to cut down on travel time and so that you can see them in the sky. Each planet has a day night cycle obviously tied to the direction the planet is facing.

I so hope they nail it with this game. I am a big fan of well designed games, Nintendo games are my favorites. But there is room for a randomly generated experience if it is as interesting as they make it seem. I see footage of large space battles, I just hope you randomly end up in the middle of a rebellion, or some space war. It needs moments like that. I am hoping there are NPCs that talk, there needs to be more to this galaxy if it is to remain interesting for 100 hours.

That is what I'm saying. You won't travel around the galaxy with your friends but as mentioned above, what stopping this from being Dark Souls and letting you fly around with strangers.

According the article, nothing. They just hope you don't run around in groups.

The exact quote "I think when people see the map they are going to fully realize what it means to be that far away from somebody else who's playing. And I know that is a bit weird for people but its what is different about our game. And we want to embrace that. We dont want people just scouting off beside their friends. I actually want people to boot up the game and just think 'isnt the universe huge? who are we? what are we all doing here?"

So yeah thats nice and all but I think finding a friend would be a sweet goal in a game like this. It could potentialy be a many hours quest if you are super far from each other.

They're being really trippy with the multiplayer stuff. I remember they were saying you couldn't meet up with people and that you could only really experience the impact that they leave. Then they'd say it's really rare to find people and that they wont want people meeting up and wants it to be a solitary experience. Now they're encouraging meeting up by showing your friends whereabouts on the galactic map?

Also, Edge magazine confirmed that they were planning on adding a more traditional multiplayer "later on"

This is exactly what I hope the game is. But so far they haven't shown anything like that, they have hinted at it. Storylines have to happen for this game to work, it cant be gather items, upgrade, go further, repeat. I really hope there is a lot they are not showing us.

See, now these pique my interest considerably

I really hope there is a lot they are not showing us.

They keep making it a point about how they think games nowadays show off too much info before they release and it takes away the mystery with starting a new game, like how it was back in the day. They said they want a lot of things to be a surprise and us to feel like a "baby" when we first start the game.

Hopefully they are keeping a lot of things back.

Can't wait for the center of the galaxy. I bet it's gonna be some kind of Time Loop or something awesome. Could be a super giant blackhole like in the center of our galaxy.

Sci fi always gets my imagination going.

Just about everything here sounds spectacular. I look forward to trying to become a space pirate.

"Every solar systems has a trading post or space station where you can cash this stuff in. The trading post is on the planet so you don't have to jump to space every time you want to cash in. Each post will have ships coming in and generally active. You can view ships you would like to buy, see upgrades ect."

I wish they made you have to make it to the trading post. It would make for an adventure in itself. Kind of like "One Piece" where they have to make it to a civilized city with all of their haul in tact.

They were always going to put your friends positions on the map it's just the map is "infinitely" huge. But they keep getting asked the question about multiplayer so their answer changes.

First bold - awesome. I bet the presence of MF robots on an otherwise barren world indicates Something Of Importance.

Second bold - managed cooldowns? Awesome! Totally out of Elite, as is the trading post thing.

I want this game NOW goddamit.
