Another interview with Philippe Lavoué, some more sales numbers.

- Wii U: over 450 000 units sold (300 000 in late december, roughly +50% YoY in the past few months), should be at 550 000 units by the end of the year.
- Games: currently, sales x3 thanks to Mario Kart8, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2 (and Smash).
- Mario Kart 8 : 200 000 units sold + 70 000 additional units from bundles
- Pokémon OR/AS : 191 000 units sold, +51% compared to X/Y during the same period.
- 3DS sales: 3.15 million; +70% thanks to Pokémon.
- Bayonetta 2 : ~60 000 units sold.


- Super Smash Bros. (Wii U): they're expecting 200 000 units by the end of the year.
- amiibo : they're expecting 200 000 units sold by the end of the year.

I read that article yesterday. What I find interesting that they basically expect one amiibo for every Smash customer. I would've expected that number to be higher. I know some people didn't buy any amiibo, but others bought the whole first wave.

I bought 7 (and will probably buy 3-4 more before year's end), and I'm not even sure I'm interested in Smash ^_^

I'm curious to see the actual sale, indeed. They were available pretty much everywhere last week in my town in France, but sometimes on a shelf that wasn't obvious. I'm not sure either that people know they're more than a collector figure, I've yet to see something explaining how they work in shops (there's a couple commercials about this, though).

Yeah, I did a stealth edit. The 200k is still interesting, because it tells us something about Nintendo's expectations and probably the availability of amiibo, meaning 1:1 to Smash Bros. retail copies. Still, some of them had higher print runs than others. And the 200k probably includes wave 2.

Actually, that worries me, to be honest.

We're talking about 18 figures in the first two waves, thus some runs must be under 5k... even considering that to sell 200k they probably have to put 300k+ in shops.

Between video game stores, electronic stores and supermarkets, I'm not even sure that all of them can expect a *single* amiibo of the lower print runs. I'll probably visit a LOT of shops when they release the second wave, if there's something like 10 amiibos of some characters in my whole town...

It's kinda crazy how much Germany loves the PS4 though. But the Xbox situation seems to get better. Retailers are offering some great discounts. Post Mario Kart Nintendo does OK too.

I think french people learned that Nintendo is under-shipping. They just can't compete with the other two when it comes to store space. So you either preorder or risk of not getting a copy. The first print edition probably helped get that message to the customer.

Until very recently, shell space for Wii U was larger than the ones for PS4 or XBOne. In many places, they're still quite similar.


There's currently a quite popular show on TV that was giving away XBOne consoles... I love how the person giving away the console was saying "we're offering Nintendo consoles".

Would have been even more funny if Microsoft paid for this, but since there were tape on the console name (and not many visible pictures of the console itself, although the green boxes can't be mistaken for another one), I think it wasn't paid advertising...

Yeah its odd. This wasn't a franchise I foresaw being more popular in France than Japan.

Currently, in France, I don't think they have really any problems when it comes to store space... Which, when you consider there's probably less different games on Wii U now than on PS4, is a feat.

The first print edition of Bayonetta sold out (in France) during preorders in a matter of days. Probably in part because of scalpers, I'd say. I wasn't able to preorder it even several weeks before the release.

But beside that, I don't remember problems finding 1st party offering of anything in shops...

It's for France, and I'd say it's quite conservative, even if their appeal, from a gameplay point of view, is quite limited. The simple fact that the prices are going up quickly (Kirby is 30€ on amazon.fr currently, and many are over 25&#8364 show that they're rather undershipping rather than overshipping.

I would be really surprised if they don't sell a couple millions worldwide in 2014.

I like to think this gives us a way of looking at what the total could possibly be in the US and Europe overall. It has to be significantly more in the US due to install base difference alone.

PS4 is still leading with huge margin even in France. Still of course some positive news for Wii U that at least in France it has sold decently. French seem to love everything Japanese (France has also second biggest manga market after Japan).

I'm not a Wii U owner (and I'm American), but I was impressed with the amiibo digital display in GameStop that I saw recently.

Hmm not really sure what to think of most of those numbers. France has half the population of Japan, yet a quarter of the sales for Wii U. Isn't that like, low? Or are video games just not as big in France (Europe?) as NA and Japan?

What were the latest numbers for japan? It did ~67k in the US for october if I'm not mistaken. That could easily bring Bayonetta at +250k WW by the end of '14, which isn't all that bad all things considered.

Also 270k mariokart vs 450 sold means a 60% attachrate.

Yep, France is basically a "otaku-land". Young people worship anything Japanese, anime, manga, sushi, 8-bit gaming. Nintendo is still trying to find out why this is the case. Italy loves Nintendo because Mario & Luigi are Italian but France loves Nintendo because Nintendo itself is Japanese.

Wii U sells .45 million in France, a country with half the population, and people in this thread are saying France loves Nintendo. If 2 million in Japan isn't considered that good, shouldn't sales half as good as that be considered pretty abysmal?
But the fact that there are people in this thread that are saying these numbers are good, leads me to the conclusion that video games aren't as big in France, at least, as NA or Japan.
