Bloody hell, as if the wanton slaughter wasn't bad enough (he kills like 10 or so guys through this) now we have to deal with an Olympic gymnast/ninga climbing rocks, 15ft leaps and the throwing of grapple hooks mid air. How good is he? He should be doing parkour at the x games sponsored by Red Bull, not chasing treasure.

It's fucking unrealistic, how strong are those fingers to keep grabbing those ledges? Who the fuck jumps first then throws the grapple hook? This is some straight up Triple X bullshit right here.

I want some Dark Souls Uncharted where you throw that grapple and the branch breaks. Yeah, screw you Drake, cop that.

Insane For Sony
That's just doing the XB1 gamma trick to make it pop more by adding black crush, though.
No. Gamersyde video is captured incorrectly. It needs to be re-released IMO, but in the meantime, the 'corrected' screens are indeed what the game is supposed to look like, and the are not adding black crush. Video is captured in the 16-239 range as opposed to 0-255, so it never renders any real whites or blacks and the contrast is very compromised because of that. I checked and double checked this - not a single screen has pure white or black in it, and the ND logo screen is dead giveaway for the brightness range.

The combat is so much more improved than the garbage UC3 gameplay.

Ugh. I remember just sitting behind cover in that game and specifically having to wait for the enemies to come out so I could shoot, because there literally were no other options for the combat design.

It was dreadful.

It seems like this game's combat is more similar to an open multiplayer arena, which is fantastic and where UC's gameplay truly shines. Traversal + combat = win.

C'mon now, he's always been great at climbing and shit, this isn't anything new.

Also, it's 'ninja'.

Is it just me or is anyone else getting a little tired of the rock hopping platforming segments? I have an idea of why they do technically (like the ladders in TLoU), but it just feels so boring. Then again I never enjoyed the jungle settings much in any of the games, for me all the memorable levels were the castles, ruins, temples and urban areas.

The platforming stuff is a huge part of Uncharted, I don't find it tiring. But I don't find this trailer very inspiring. I mean, it looks gorgeous, if not mindblowing like I hoped, but I have a faith the game will be compelling and a fun romp, as usual. I'm just getting the feeling that Naughty Dog's time might be better spent on a Last of us sequel or something new. Something that would really show off the PS4, and have a deeper/darker tone and narrative like Last of Us could really be something special.

Also, those face shots look incredible, even if the image quality is a bit of a downgrade. No hurt there, it was inevitable.

You're clearly new to this franchise.

Alright Gaf, I have the complete Gamersyde demo ready with corrected video levels, what's a good place to upload this thing? The file is 3.79 GB.

Unless someone else has already done it and I missed it. Then I'll just keep it to myself lol.

It's a video game bro ;)

And honestly, I was very surprised at the grappling. It is simply unbelievable :O

This is an incredible attention to detail

The waterfall is falling and isnt passing through the 2, it is splashing on drake's head and making it flat and wet and part of it is splashing on the mercenaries hands and its splashing from his hand all around him and interacting like it would a real physical object, you can see the splash affects on the mercs right hand and drakes head and neck

But it is passing through Drake. Look between his legs, the water goes straight through his body. ;)

The game does have some amazing details, nonetheless. Like the nosebleed of be mercenary after kicking him in the head a few times.

When does that happen? Shit I missed it.

This was really a weird one for me.

Visuals were kinda.. interesting to say at least. Despite not feeling like they matched the quality of the reveal trailer model, the character models look fantastic (possibly just a cutscene model vs in-game model). The sheer attention to detail is astounding: Drake's body and clothes actually fully react to their surroundings.

If water pours on his head, parts of his hair get wet instead of the entire head part of the model; if it just hits his pants, you can see the stains. If he slides through mud, the mud stays on the exact sides of the model which collided with it, and the same with dirt. And in the same way, the environment reacts to the characters if they interact with the vegetation for example. It really looked organic in that regard. Also, the engine seems to be pretty powerful at creating huge landscapes and vistas. The more open level-design added to the feeling of being at vast and open place.

But man, there were many parts of the geometry that just didn't look good at all, especially some rocks and cliffs. I'm talking about the cave and jungle sections where some rock walls just look way too flat and kinda robbed of their characteristic nature in favor of giving players a guideline where to climb. And this might be my biggest issue currently: the game is at the same time realistic and unrealistic instead of focusing on one aspect. The game looks like the freaking real-life at times and yet it is unable to shake off its videogame origins. Like, to put it bluntly: Uncharted 4 looks maybe too much Uncharted for me.

What I mean by that is that the realistic visuals don't match with the at times goofy looking gameplay; there are still clearly marked walls that show you where you can climb instead of some kind of free climbing (which I first assumed was the case since Drake is wearing a karabiner). Drake making loud sounds doesn't have any effect on enemies. And there is just much more that and you know what: I know it has to be this way, not only because consoles can only do so much but also because this is still a video game that has to feel good while playing. But I was looking that video and all I was thinking "yep, sure looks like a Uncharted 4".

Once I realized that this is more of an evolution of a concept than a revolution, I noticed some things that looked very cool: Melee combat seems more context sensitive than ever and looks much better implemented before. The transitions between animations make it all seem very organic and it is hard to say when one begins and when one stops. The hook grappling thing seems cool, especially during mid-combat. And from what it looks like, it seems there seems to be an option for stealth which I would absolutely love since the series has some of the most tiresome gunfights I ever encountered - despite thinking that what I've seen so far from the gunplay looking better than the other three games.

I just realized that I wrote much more than I wanted to, but yeah, those are my thoughts. This has some potential, but isn't exactly the kind of huge leap forward in terms of the game concept which felt archaic at some points of the footage. Kinda felt like the most beautiful bird being kept in a rusty looking cage.

Also, I want to make clear that this footage didn't make me less interested in the game. I appreciate the fact that Naughty Dog actually had a live running gameplay demo which speaks volumes of their confidence and therefore I will keep following this title and hope that some of the next builds will showcase more impressive segments. This is after all a game deep in development and I hope that I could convey my opinion good enough.

I agree, but I think Uncharted perfectly exemplifies that it's okay to have these qualities in not only game but more over sequels. People want Uncharted, they don't want something else. Otherwise it would be more worth while to create a new IP.

Pretty much everything that I've come to know about Uncharted looks refined and polished in that demo. The gun play looks especially better, and the flow and tension of combat looks much better. I just have to hope it's better for the whole game as well.

My strongest thought like you said were the obvious hand holds. It could have been done better, but then I try to think how... Either everything is climbable and it goes open level. Possible a good thing, but then they lose the tightness of level design. You wouldn't get that moment where you snuck passed the guards and they missed you each going to seperate ways from you. Stealth would go out the window. And the Stealth is the addition that I'm must excited about. Way better handled, from what I can see.

Really it looks like a great game that is standing on the shoulders of tons of work, and refinement over a series lifetime. Not series makes it this far, and not every series is as good as Uncharted. I can't wait to take one final lap with the series.

Exactly. This game looks like being the most dynamic and fluid of all the Uncharted's and yet people who have criticised the series in the past don't seem to care about the game play improvements that is clearly apparent even from this early look, instead complaining about downgrades in Drakes hair graphics or whatever.
Yes but most of those people clearly gave an agenda, quite embarrassing.

Gaf never learned their lesson in "underestimating naughty dog 101"...
they still have a year of development ahead of them..

I think you hit the nail on the head with ND's time being better spent elsewhere, after this game of course. Obviously I still want to play it and enjoy a clearly next gen version of Uncharted, but the over familiar gameplay does feel a bit by the numbers at this point IMO. It's a popcorn movie blockbuster game and I've no doubt it's going to meet those expectations, but I think I'm just anxious to see something completely different looking and playing out of next gen from top tier devs.

Skux, thank you! Can you export it in even better quality to match Gamersyde's bitrate?

I've corrected and reuploaded all my screenshots. Yeah, they need to re-release that video. The way it is now is misleading and not doing game enough justice.

I'm not going to like, at first glance, I wasn't that impressed with the visuals for he gameplay reveal. It may have been partly the compression, but I thought it sort of looked like what a remastered Uncharted might look like on PS4. It wasn't until the action picked up that I really appreciated the game we're getting next year. This game will be awesome.

I think this thread shows they made the right decision, business wise, going 30FPS over 60FPS.

The amount of shit this game got visually to start this thread really drives home why so many developers choose graphics over framerate.

That's because the frame rate was only 30fps. The E3 trailer was at a higher lod and running at 60fps on what we were told was running on a PS4. If the frame rate halves then you have twice as long to render a frame. The expectation is you should have close to twice the detail. Instead we actually have less detail at 30fps.

That is a huge downgrade.

That's a bigger shift in graphics than the difference between any XOne and PS4 multiplat title.

Business wise I can see the argument for dropping to 30 fps because we somehow lost half a playstation.

Not as blown away with the grapics as some other people are. With the first wave of "true" next gen games arriving(CoD, AC, DA) it's simply not so special anymore. Doesn't mean that they are doing a bad job or anything, but it's not the holy grail of console graphics for me.

Damnit, Naughty Dog! Setting your RGB to limited is an amateur mistake. No longer top-tier devs in my book.

Holy shit.

Looks good, but didnt wow me...

Idk if its the graphics or the setting, its a very confusing vertical jungle...but for me something was off (I loved U2, probably on the top 5-10 last gen, but didnt like U3 much)
