Uncharted 4 Gameplay Demo [Up: Sony - Was running at 30 fps]

(Disclaimer: I posted in this section because this is a Tomb Raider Current Events topic and I want the conversation centered on the ongoing relationship between Uncharted and the future of Tomb Raider. No need to move or complain. Thanks.)

The gameplay demo of Uncharted 4 from the Playstation Experience just aired Live. It starts out with a scenic camera pan from a coastal cliff looking out into the ocean as waves crash into jagged rocks. This is a CLEAR nod to the reboot. Instead of emerging from a cave like Lara, Drake then goes down into one.

In this cave is a hanging skeleton from a rock wall. Another nod to how Lara begins the reboot hanging upside down. "Tall lanky person with dumb ideas about a treasure", Drake remarks (Reference to TRU Lara model?). Drake climbs up the rock wall to the foot of this upside down hanging skeleton, and just like a scene out of TR2013 where Lara reaches out to grab the bow off a corpse, dropping the body to the floor but acquiring new gear, It seems Drake follows the same tradition, but since this skeleton is supposed to be Lara, naturally the gear drake acquires is a makeshift pick-ax.

With his newly acquired climbing gear, Drake approaches a craggly wall that looks exactly like the ones in the reboot, and proceeds to free climb using his new pick-ax.

There's also a feature notably borrowed from past tomb raiders, the grappling hook. It's seen hanging from his hip and is seamlessly used rather fluidly, without any break in gameplay.

The whole demo felt like an amalgamation of all the best features from the last 4 Tomb Raider games in one package. With a less stiff move-set than past Uncharted games, and also more open, less linear environments, this could have very well been a spiritual successor to the reboot (besides that the hand to hand combat and stealth was very much more fleshed out than an average Tomb Raider game). Moving forward, Tomb Raider has it's work cut out for it. I saw nothing in that demo that Tomb Raider hasn't done first and couldn't do better again. If comparisons between these two franchise were unwarranted before, they are sure fair to make now.

How do you think the next tomb raider game will respond to this and do you think the appropriations and advancements Uncharted 4 has made on the reboot's formula would be an appropriate direction for future games?

What a strange way to summerize a demo

The question as to how much of this game represents Hennig/Richmond's vision versus Druckley's is going to plague me for years I suspect.

If somebody dies, you can bet it was the Druck.

Especially if that somebody is Elena.

What a strange way to summerize a demo

I found the thread and read a bit of it, dude is a lunatic, thinking even the palette of Drake's character was Naughty Dog trolling Crystal Dynamics.

The characters models are pretty damn good

Can't wait to see Sully and hopefully Elena (not too sure she is actually going to be in this)

That doesn't really like like Nate anymore. It almost looks like a different person. More realistic, I guess.

LOL. People actually complains about the graphic of a Naughty Dog's game? Uncharted 2 IMO is still the best looking PS3 game. Early footage guys so relax. The gameplay looks so fun and that is all that matter to me.

Yeah, just imagine the improvements they'll make by next fall. I assume it'll be out in November, as that has been the month all the previous iterations have been released.

Don't care about downgrade or whatever, I'll welcome even more downgrade, just give me a 60fps option like TLoU, live up to your tease ND.

I'm really glad they didn't spoil one of their setpieces. We know those will be there and won't dissapoint anyway.

Especially for Uncharted, the normal gameplay looked fantastic and was a nice improvement over previous games.

After watching Scux's version of the video, I noticed 2 things. When Drake gets pushed into a wall by an enemy, the water that flows behind him, wets his hair. Also, when Nathan kicks an enemy in the face, who is clinging onto Drake's leg, his nose starts to bleed.

Great job Scrux.

I think it'll be like MGS4. Before release, we'll be convinced Drake dies, but they'll give him some other formal send off, make it clear he's done, then give the franchise to another studio, and let those games star his brother.

TLoU2 is next, Uncharted was Amy's baby, and she's gone, they have a new IP in the works. They don't have the bandwidth for Uncharted after this, but they're going to want to feel like they closed it off in their own way before passing the torch.

As long as the ending with Drake is well made (with or without death), I'm cool with it. They can then give the franchise to Bend, without the gimmicks I think they could do an average Uncharted game.

The same could have been said about the initial gameplay videos of Ground Zeroes. And it wasn't scripted.

Maybe it wasn't, but it looked scripted - and that's pretty immersion breaking when you play the game.
If the game looks like it's not you playing it, even if you're the one playing it, then why even play it?

The demo felt like it was Uncharted 1 (samey setting to the first few chapters of that game) with nothing new to structure and formula we already got from Uncharted in the past (Drake walk while talking to himself , climb stuff then shoot guys for 5 mins) They don't try to do anything new here at all. I'm not sure why, maybe because this was based on what U3 team original did and the other team don't have the time to undo that or add new ideas because they need to release it in 2015 but yeah.

with no changes this might be another AC Unity situation where critic destroy it because lack of new gameplay or ideas.for me it's just sad see ND taking step backward after all the new stuff they did with TLoU.

Also the graphics were pretty average. with awful water effect and bad animations. it looked like an upscaled PS3 game with no "next gen graphics feel and effect" but I guess ND will improve the graphics before the release.

None of this post was a joke?

What they showed off looked really scripted, the way the cliffs had ledges in just the right places and whatnot.

I noticed this too. I think it's part of the consequence of games looking more and more realistic. So when you have these elements that need to be there for the game to function as a game they stand out and can be immersion breaking.

I'm genuinely surprised they can't match the E3 clip in game at 30fps.

If it is a 60 targeted game capped at 30 for this demo then it totally makes sense. Would they add in extra effects for a one time 30fps demo?

They could have unlocked it, and then DigitalFoundry would have run the frame rate analysis like they did on the Advanced Warfare Xbone campaign reveal where the frame rate was fluctuating wildly between 30 and 60 and naturally people would freak out. At release it was a solid 60 in those same areas.

PC elitist give PC gamers a bad name. If you can't appreciate what ND is doing with the hardware then I can only assume you're one of those PC gamers who doesn't know anything about their own hardware or the hardware that's in the PS4.
Pointing out that the quality has dropped a bit since the reveal is not to say that the game doesn't look great. It does mean that the game does look more in line with what I expect from consoles.

I seriously question the judgement of anybody that says the graphical fidelity is the same.

Poor comparison. The level of detail in Drake's brother is on par with the detail in Drake in the reveal trailer. And you think Drake is going to be less detailed than a secondary character?

Agreed. I feel like with both Uncharted 2 and 3 they showed too many set-pieces leading up to the release - i felt like it took away from the awe when i finally encountered them in the game.

I really hope that's the case. I thought what's in this gameplay video looks great, seeing this running at 60fps at home on my PS4 would be so good.

Really liked the openness of the level and the enemies attacking from above and below you. Adds an extra sense of urgency to the confrontations. The new rope throwing mechanic looks like it'll be fun to use. Animation also looked smooth as hell.

It still blows my mind that people are so intent on trying to drag this game down.

Hmm... blows my mind how someone spoiled on PC loves Titanfal graphics and alll and screaming to high heavens downgrade on UC:4 and you wonder why people are dragging a game? So now what's your reason on dragging down UC:4 as well?

Hell no. Let the franchise die while it has some dignity. Really hope this is the last uc game, tlou and new ip from here on out. Want nd to explore space setting

Probably not impressive anymore on current gen, but did anyone else notice that Drake's hand casts a shadow on his head? And I just noticed his veins pop out when he clenches his fist. Amazing.

Here is a much higher quality version of my fixed RGB levels video.

For those just joining us, several of us have noticed that both the official YouTube and Gamersyde videos have been rendered incorrectly, using limited RGB range, instead of full RGB range.

When viewed on a display that uses full RGB range (such as a computer monitor), this causes the image to appear "washed out". You are not seeing the correct colours because the video is rendered incorrectly for your dispaly.

Because both the lower and upper ranges of colour values are limited, this results in a reduction in contrast level. This is most obvious when looking at the Naughty Dog logo at the start of the video - the black background is a very dark grey instead of black.

I used the Sony Vegas Levels plugin to correct the RGB levels (it has a preset for this exact thing).

Download - 817mb - 5:40

Comparison screenshots - limited RGB on left - full RGB on right
Curious, did you "fix"the whole video too? Was kinda disappointed to see only 5 minutes.

Two screens from Gamersyde video:

When you see that video, IMHO, no other game has that level of visual clarity, and the level of detail. I mean despite all the insane detail they are rendering, the image looks so clean and stable all the time. It looks incredible on my TV. I think the game must be using some kind of supersampling to look this clean.

Please if you guys have played uncharted three.. Is this how the game really looks.. ALl super clean and no sign of Aliasing at all and the super-duper texture and DoF?
..
The game is looking good at Full HD 1080p/30 but comon guys you will be lying to yourself if you think Tom raider isn't as good as this ..

Just watched for the first time since I had to work all day. Watched at 1080p.

Absolutely flawless. The environment was so pristine and beautiful, from individual leaves to cliffsides. Coupled with that natural lighting, makes for amazing visuals. How anyone can not be impressed with this has to be crazy. If any ND artists are browsing around, kudos to your insane Zbrush abilities. Truly exceptional work.

Nice catch. But, but, hair shadows! And stuff! THIS IS IMPORTANT

I'm getting a shady vibe. Not sure about this bloke.
Haha I know right. Thought the same thing.

I hope you are not serious :\
I wonder. Look at this post. Hyperbolic trolling or just... I don't know. I call Poe. XD

Titanfall runs like crap on PC and doesn't look nearly nice enough to justify it. Doesn't change the fact that it's a phenomenal game that should be played by any fan of MP shooters. And screaming to high heavens? A single comment that it doesn't look as good as it used to and a post explaining which parts specifically is screaming to high heavens? I think it's much more telling how much energy has gone into digging into my post history than discussing the content. Saying that a game doesn't look as nice as it once did based on video that everyone has seen is very different from pooping on the gameplay of a game that you have not actually properly played. Enough of this discussion - if you honestly believe that the game looks just as good as it did, argue that point rather than resorting to ad hominem.

wow exposed again, lol

The fact that people are going through lengths to compare a close up of a cinematic teaser to a in game close up of the same game now with much more visual elements running is amazing.

Despite these differences, the differences aren't so discernible and there's even reasons for that.

I think digging someone's post history is valid to decide if it is worth arguing that point or not. I mean there is no point arguing for example with a fanboy when he has already made up his mind. So I can understand if someone does not want to argue based on post history. Not accusing you by the way. Just a general statement.
