Far Cry 4 PC performance thread

The 1.5 patch definitely improved performance for my 980.

I can finally play without the mipmap fix on everything Ultra+SMAA stutter free!

If by "this" you mean the 1.5 patch, then no, it does not.
Ubisoft commented on their forums that a fix for that problem would likely have to come from Nvidia.

You can avoid the loss of detail in dark areas by using different SLI bits (FarCry3), but this introduces other artifacts for some configurations and doesn't scale quite as well as the Far Cry 4 bits.

I'm not sure who the fix for completely broken TXAA will have to come from, or the SMAA+SLI ghost frame bug. Perhaps one day this game will be in a state where all the shipped features actually work.

you forgot the bugged god rays, and what seems like bugged pcss(unless its suppose to look worse than low setting shadows). does anyone else feel like this will be the final pc patch for the game?

Great to see that stuttering is no longer a thing for some but in my case it's still there. The only thing that seems to trigger it the wingsuit, it's like the streaming system can't keep up when the framerate is at 60fps, pop-in rears its ugly head as well.
No stuttering on foot, but dips when a lot of assets use Hairworks.

Overall satisfied with the "port" (even though it has been claimed PC was the lead platform but what does that mean in reality..). Definitely a great looking game if not completely "next-gen".

Well 1.5 solved stuttering on my system. I can now set ultra textures with mipmap0 enabled. Finally I can play this game.

Those people who are still having problems, does the game still peg a CPU core to 100% and leave others on 40% or less? If so, make sure to change the CPU affinity of FarCry4.exe using task manager. If a clogged up CPU thread is causing hitches on your system, this could help.

Also (captain obvious) do close all programmes that aren't completely necessary. I found that a utility I've used for years to monitor temperatures and control fans, was causing regular spikes in CPU usage. Closing it helped smooth this game out.

This did nothing for me unfortunately. Anyone here have a six core CPU? Any stuttering?

I tried it briefly yesterday and couldn't find any real stuttering, tried driving around, running around, etc, but I still haven't put any real amount of time into the game so I can't say for sure that I don't suffer from it. The framerate wasn't *completely* smooth, it seemed like a couple of frames every 30 seconds or so would take slightly longer to render than usual, but monitoring the frame times couldn't flag it up.

It's very minor and I wouldn't usually notice something like that, but it seemed consistent so perhaps that's why I noticed it.

I'm not sure if it's just me or that particular point either, but the SLI black crush seemed to be fixed..?

Are you serious!? sounds too good to be true. I put this game away after playing the first area and decided to wait for a fix, which i expected to be at least 5 months. this is awesome if true :)

So I played around a bit yesterday.

At first I started with the default settings for my setup (High on a 770) and it was smooth but looked kinda ugly.

Then I bumped it to Very High and it was still mostly smooth (almost always locked at 60) but it was still kinda ugly.

Then I remembered that I still had the mipmap and the other thing activated in the xml so I deleted my XML and retried at Very High. Now the game was a bit better looking but I had lost 15-20fps.

I forgot to try again on High without the xml fix to see if it's smooth now.

I guess that now my main issue is more IQ than framerate since it appears I can get good FPS.

I had major LOD issues when playing with the settings last night. A lot of popping in the distance and shadows lod issues were really bad.

This is really annoying.

LOL

What a piece of hot garbage this game is. I'm so glad I got it for free with my 970 and didn't have to pay anything for it.

Had the stuttering issue before and after the latest patch, the game loads to a black screen and stops working, crashing to desktop. I knew there was a good reason I haven't bothered with an Ubisoft PC game since the first Assassin's Creed.

Holy Shit. I'm not sure if it was the Omega drivers for my 290x, or 1.5, but the stuttering is fucking fixed. The thing runs like a dream now at constant 60fps.

MXAA for AMD still seems to be fucked tho. But SMAA works fine.

Stuttering is greatly reduced, now loading in new Ultra assets only brings the game down to around 57fps and quickly back up. This is much better than drops to below ~30 for upwards of 1/4 of a second. Hopefully they can make it more seamless with future patches, but it's finally playable without the LoadingMip fix. It will certainly completely appease those that use a Fraps counter as the game still registers 59/60 during the asset loading now, frametimes still jump during this so there is still some smoothness lost. Overall vast improvement, 8/10!

EDIT: Just lost about 2 hours of progress since the Save and Quit apparently doesn't work? Also there is no longer an option to just save. Went exploring, cleared a radio tower, two outposts, and discovered 3-4 locations, saved and quit, after I went back into the game it took me back to where I just finished a mission 2 hours prior. WTF?

After letting GeForce Experience optimize the settings, the game launches for me now and at least in outdoors areas, the stuttering is greatly reduced.

I can actually play the game now!

I played for a while last night after updating to the latest patch. To me it seemed like the lighting was all sorts of jacked up. Walking around in areas with a bunch of trees during the day and it's like the shadows are just going haywire. I don't remember seeing this before the patch. Anyone experience anything similar? Sorry, I'd capture video but I've literally never captured video ever and don't really know how to go about it.

I've noticed that loads are way longer now, after this patch. Seems it may be the 360 controller.

Does this fix crushed blacks

For sli users?

While the official news is no, it does on my machine after the patch. I'm not sure if this is because of the patch or because it just magically fixed itself but I played for 2 hours last night and suddenly realized I had been able to see through an entire in-game day/night cycle.

Edit: I'm running two MSI GTX 970s.

If the problem you're describing looks like this, then it's probably a known bug that happens when you use soft shadows and you encounter snow in the game. People usually hit it when they head into the north of the map.

Ubisoft/Nvidia working on it.

I get all sorts of graphical glitches with Farcry 4 right now... here's just an example of the fur glitching out:

Sometimes I'm also getting shadow issues... honestly the game still needs a lot of work.

I do. In fact, it's a brand new X99 rig I put together just a few days ago. It still stutters as bad as my older system before or after the 1.5 patch. One thread out of twelve is maxed out, and most others are at 0% load. But, isn't that how FC4 has behaved since release anyway? I remember seeing performance charts on tech websites showing exactly that symptom across a multitude of CPUs/platforms.

Just so we're clear, have you tried changing the affinity as described further up the page?

Yeah I was going to tell him that, let's see if this is a CPU related bug even though it did nothing for my 2600k.

Thanks, guys. I'll give it a try later tonight when I get home. :)

EDIT: Tweaking the affinity as per riflen's instructions did dramatically improve CPU utilization in FC4. Stuttering persists, but it's less noticeable now. Thank you!

After the new patch the game takes like 5+ minutes to get to the "Press any key" screen with the FC4 logo. I don't have a controller plugged in. Anyone know what the deal is?

Edit: Played for a bit, my game is super dark now like it used to be before patch 1.4 when I had god rays enabled. Except now changing god rays doesn't fix it and dark areas are just permanently pitch black.

This patch fucked me.

i7 920 4Ghz and GTX980, this patch has been unbelievably amazing for me. Stuttering gone with everything maxed out and SMAA at 1440p. Rarely drops below 45fps and I actually enjoy playing it now without the random stuttering.

patch 1.5 has removed god rays.. WTF :s

this.. that yellowish bright god rays is now gone..

and somehow it fixes the crushed black with my gtx 690.. i deleted the config file earlier after the updates, dont know if its related.. and i can now use TXAA without worrying about blur camera and cutscenes..

1.5 seems to fixed a lot of problems.. by removing the problem

It's a bug that they are currently fixing.

whats the source on this are you referring to pc or console.

to be clear the god rays setting id still there but the light rays effect is completely gone. it now doesnt shine thru trees as you move pass. it looks like the ps4 version which i also own :/

what the hell is ubisoft doing to this game :(

1.5 definitely helped with the stuttering, but did not eliminate it. At least the game is now enjoyable by my standards, even if some issues remain. I'll list those.

There is still a slight amount of the same asset streaming related stuttering. Noticeable, but no longer game ruining.

Then there's the issues with frame pacing, or whatever else it is that makes the game seem as if it's rendering at a much lower fps than 60, even though everything is telling me the framerate is above 60. This is only a problem at certain locations, such as the main town. Turning the camera quickly in the streets will result in some judder even though framerates appear ok. Again, noticeable, but not game ruining.

Finally, and I'd love it if someone could confirm they've noticed the same, there's a crackling issue with the sounds, that seems to be related to me turning my character. If a sound sample is playing and I quickly turn around, there's often some faint crackling in the sounds that is easily reproducible by standing still in the same location and turning quickly. I've tried with both my Xonar STX and integrated sound card, and both show the same symptoms, so I'm thinking it's related to the game somehow instead of my system. Anyone else noticed this, or even better, been able to fix this? It's not easily heard from speakers, but with headphones it's pretty obvious at times.

I'm happy the game is now in a properly playable state, but these small nagging issues still take the experience down a notch. I hope more patches or relevant nvidia driver updates are on the way.

i3570k @ 4.2Ghz, GTX980 @ 1450/7700, 16GB DDR3 @ 2133Mhz, Gsync @ 1440p, Win8.1.

Game all Ultra with fur, god rays and soft shadows disabled. SMAA. Rock solid 60+ fps with averages around 70-80.

Volumetric fog and enhanced god rays are still in the option menu...But no longer in the game. Even on PC.
I just checked and no beam of light to be seen even when set to "enhanced".

Ubisoft are the undisputed kings of fucks up.

dont know how anyone can say the pc version of this game isnt a disaster.

It's becoming funny now actually. There's no point in being angry anymore, just laugh at their incompetence. I mean as a developer you should love your game, they've worked on it for so many years and they release it in this state, fuck.

Big, off-topic post. Sorry. I think we need a thread on this subject:

It must be very disheartening for those individuals who have worked hard to make this code function well on PC. I imagine that a whole lot of these Gameworks features were stuffed in at the very end of the development cycle and there wasn't enough time to iron out all the kinks before release. Hell, some advertised features weren't even present in the release build.

Interesting that recently when a Ubisoft representative was asked about their PC ports, they stated that they're working hard to get their games released at the same time on all formats so that PC players didn't feel like second-class customers. Well, I would suggest that if this is the result of that initiative, then PC customers would much rather wait for the product to be finished.
Pushing the game out on a fixed date only benefits Ubisoft's senior management and those employees who are judged on whether the project is delivered to a schedule. It does not benefit the customer, it does not benefit those staff who actually create the game and clearly it does not benefit the product itself.

Because Ubisoft seem to just keep doing this with their PC ports, over time I can see this problem getting worse. No-one wants to work in a team that produces broken products. So, the talented people who have more options than some, will leave to do something more worthwhile, rather than stick around where their hard work amounts to naught.

If you read glassdoor reviews of Ubisoft, you'll see the same reports of serious mismanagement problems again and again. Business and marketing staff work normal hours and are better paid than engineers, artists and testers, who have to put in a lot of overtime. It's no wonder the products are released in this state.

Good post. I can't see anything changing unless some major outlet does a long piece shaming Ubisoft.

couldnt disagree anymore. ubisoft kiev, the makers of this port, are well known for developing nothing but garbage time and time again. it must be disheartening to be talentless and terrible at your job.

The 1.5.0 patch has not helped my game in any way. The stuttering is exactly the same as before and now all the audio sounds strangely muffled.

Edit: Also, I just tested both the god ray settings and they both still work for me.

Enhanced god rays in Shangri-la:

Edit 2: It seems that this patch also reverted those mouse acceleration fixes in the OP, which is not surprising but it is a bummer.

I guess you are referring to the microstuttering effect? 1.5 should have done a lot to help with the asset streaming stutter.

I was lucky to have the microstutter effect completely eliminated without any modifications by me with the latest patch. Before I had to have MaxPreRenderedFrames set to 1 and use in-game triple buffering. Now I just have to use driver level VSync for a mostly smooth frametime.

The 1.5.0 patch has made in-game streaming worse for me. Now after like 10-15 minutes of playing the game starts accessing the HDD like crazy and the game slows down to a halt. This never happened till 1.4.0. Piloting and driving has become nigh-impossible and my frame-rate has taken a hit as well. This sucks.

I played for a bit last night for the first time since the patch hit, stutter is pretty much gone as far as I can tell. However they realllllly need to fix objectives not updating quickly. Even navigating menus or graphical weapon sights do not load right away sometimes.
