Halo: The Master Chief Collection should be recalled

First of all, I apologize in advance for creating a new Halo thread. I know there were quite a few yesterday, but I feel like that was a result of Halo fans finally reaching a fever pitch with how the way Microsoft and 343 are handling this franchise. That being said, I feel like I have some specific grievances about this game that have not been addressed or have not been addressed in the sort of detail that I would like. Yesterday, was the first day on NeoGAF since a 1 month ban that I received for "being a hostile jerk" in a Halo: MCC thread shortly after launch. In that thread, perhaps I was being a bit of a prick. However, in my defense it was incredibly frustrating to watch people defend the actions of 343/Microsoft. One of the most frustrating issues that I argued over during the week after Halo: MCC's launch was the issue of lack of dedicated servers. Shortly after launch there was a thread questioning the disappearance of dedis and a person representing 343 came in and explained that p2p was only a fallback to be used when dedis were down. That seemed to calm a lot of NeoGAF users, however I argued that it's not good enough to know that p2p is a fallback. Furthermore I argued that if p2p is used more frequently than dedicated servers (in the case of MCC I have only seen the connecting to dedicated servers a handful of times), can you really advertise that your game is running on dedicated servers?

This game is broken at its core, and I'm not convinced that any amount of 1mb updates will be able to fix this game. Launching a broken/unfinished game at launch (and releasing incremental updates) just doesn't work with the way that development cycles are commonly structured. Prior to launch, many positions within specific projects are laid off and those that do remain are frequently moved to the next project. Teams that handle post launch updates and DLC are significantly smaller than the team that worked on the project in the years/months leading up to a game's launch.

In the case of Halo MCC, I am convinced that this game needs to be completely removed from the marketplace (specifically the multiplayer portion) and a full team of funded programmers needs to work on the game until it runs in a functioning state. Microsoft/343 marketed this title as the definitive Halo re-release. The Criterion Collection release of Halo, if you will. What we got was closer to someone's half-assed, middle school, Volcano science fair project.

It's also not fair, and completely anti-consumer to promise a product that does not currently even exist (See: the Halo MCC vidoc that was released prior to launch). Microsoft essentially said:

"We know we can really sell you on this idea. We have no idea how to actually pull off the idea, but we'll sell you an empty box of broken promises, take your money, and I'm sure our small team of post-launch developers working 15 hour shifts will be able to solder something together. It won't be pretty, but it will *sort of* work. It won't work nearly as well as any of the titles worked originally on their own... but it will *sort of* be playable... and Halo 5 will be out by the time this game is fixed, so we'll take your money for that as well."

If people want to talk about a real controversy in the video game industry and not the faux ethics controversy that was the original #gamegate (not the feminist, equal representation, movement that it morphed into *which I fully support*). People should be talking about how over the last 10 years AAA developers have been over promising and selling unfinished products in collaboration with the gaming media and twitch streamers who rarely ever bat an eye about being forced to review/recommend games before the final product is even available. There is currently an utter lack of respectable games-focused journalistic outlets that offer anything more than "this is the hot new game of the year", "this game is fun to play", "this game has pretty graphics." There is no video game focused equivalent the likes of Paris Review, New York Times, Cineaste Magazine, The New Yorker, etc. There's just a bunch of advertisers the like likes of ign, gamespot, gametrailers. And loudmouth, bigoted, youtube and twitch streamers. Nobody is expressing any sort of real outrage about being scammed, because all videogame journalistic outlets are essentially advertisers.

To conclude, here's my post-update 12.15.2014 notes from last night (all glitches were experienced within my 2-3 hours of playtime last night):

1. Entering matchmaking with a party does't work the majority of the time. If you're in a party and you hit a "connection failed" error, everyone will be kicked out of the party and when everyone rejoins all subsequent searches will hit "connection failed." This happens every time until everyone in your party does a hard reset of the Xbox one, and even that doesn't always fix it. This is the most significant bug that I've encountered and basically prevents people from consistently being able to join matchmaking as a party.

2. Post update, the game will sometimes put in you in in-game chat even if you are already in an Xbox Live party. You're able to hear everyone in your party, but your voice is only registered via in-game chat. There is no way to switch out of this unless you completely disband the party and do a hard reset of your console.

3. Post game I encountered a bug (as party host) where your stuck in the post carnage report view and unable to return to the matchmaking list. To fix this you need to go to your xbox dashboard and force close the game and re-open it.

4. In Halo CE Beaver Creek if you melee someone and you're close to a wall (one of the bases) sometimes you will fall through the map.

5. Halo CE still has significant input lag for jumping and melee. Hit registration seems to be marginally improved post update, but lack of dedicated servers makes host advantage fairly significant.

6. When playing a Halo CE matchmade game (and if your team is good at Halo CE) you will often encounter opponents that did not vote for the Halo CE map. More often than not, these teams are not very good Halo CE players. Your team will subsequently destroy them with pistol and your opponents will quit out of the game (This happened 3 times last night). After all of your opponents have left the game, the game does not end. The game continues until the timer ends even if you have 0 players on your opponent's team. This bug needs to be fixed, and the need for a standalone Halo CE playlist remains because there are many players that have no interest in Halo CE. Similarly there are many players that have no interest in Halo 3-4.

EDIT: Halo MCC is literally the wikipedia definition of shovelware:

"Shovelware is a derogatory computer jargon term that refers to software bundles noted more for the quantity of what is included than for the quality or usefulness.[1] The term is also used to refer to software that is ported from one computer platform or storage medium to another with little thought given to adapting it for use on the destination platform or medium, resulting in poor quality."(Wikipedia)

I got the digital version yesterday at around 4:30 p.m. This morning at 10:30 a.m. it was still at 39% downloading/installing....

I'm surprised how much little buzz this gets in the gaming journalist world compared to Assassin's Creed which got absolutely slammed. This game is a bigger blunder than both Unity and BF4, and that's saying a lot. I still can't properly play online one month after launch.

I've played a good amount but not without issues.

I'd just say return it. A recall would cause more issues than it would help.

I agree. Haven't been able to play it since launch. First time I've felt that I have actually thrown away money for nothing in return when it comes to something gaming related.

I paid $70 in Canada for the digital and it's just taking up so much damn HDD space as well. Havent played it successfully even once since launch. I'm tight on money now.

Maybe I can get MS to refund me? Or is it too late?

I had pre-ordered the digital version and got fed up, after a bunch of hassle and obvious support suggestion's that anyone knows would not fix it I got a refund as a "one time courtesy".

Campaign checkpoint save issues are still present after all of the patches too apparently. Even basic shit is still broken a month later.

Agreed.

Also, don't get me wrong. I am happy for the people apparently not experiencing any problems with the title. I'm just having a hard time believing that is true, considering I was in a party of 4 people last night all experiencing similar issues.

A recall is just basically a wide scale return that bypasses the normal procedures most stores have. I think MS should step up and let people send their copies in for a refund if they feel unsatisfied in recognition that most people who bought a physical copy will not be able to get a refund. But yeah that's never going to happen and there won't be a recall either. Those are pretty much only for safety issues and MCC isn't killing people just making them angry.

A lot of the game sites already screwed up and gave the game 9/10 before actually seeing how it performed. Going back now would make them look like morons and I doubt they are itching to do that.

Sorry to pick out one bit of an interesting OT

That's just classic Halo! It was always about host advantage and shotguns back in the day. Lag switching too.

Does the game not save in the campaigns like BF4?
It's constantly kept my progress, but every other time I turned the game on my autosave would be gone, making you have to restart the mission you were on from the beginning more often than not. I've never had it flatright delete my progress and don't actually know if it's a thing that happens, but it was frustrating to play and then have to start the mission over again. So I've put it on the backburner.

Why did you get the digital its not like you couldn't of known it was going to take up space?

Sounds like they bit off way more than they could chew. They are almost fortunate the player base is so meager compared to the mainline Halo titles at this point. It would have been much more realistic, it seems, for them to have released just the Halo 2 remake and tried their damndest to make it the best package it could be. Testing 100 maps and different player configurations with different graphical settings must be a goddamn nightmare.

It's a disgrace and the single player is a mess that they haven't even attempted to fix. The promised 60fps and we didn't even get close to that except for Halo 3. It doesn't save checkpoints, terminals glitch, it crashes, levels skip in playlists. It's plain broken and we were all lied to.

The game is a joke.. Each new patch fixes a few things for some, makes things worse for others.. While main issues like the complete lack of the very much promised DEDICATED SERVERS and campaign save issues still persist without being addressed or even acknowledged.

I have the opinion that 343i's communication about the issues have been completely sub par and actually made things worse. Official updates are few and sparse, most of the studio members stopped interacting with the customers, official forum support for problems is a joke.

I also love how the EXECUTIVE PRODUCER for the title, Dan Ayoub, completely vanished after the problems started to pile. His last post was on November 13th. It's specially great since looking through his tweets you see he was very active and always answered people's questions and comments. This guy should be putting his face on public, not hiding out.

And finally, the Franchise Community Manager seems to be completely lost. As charismatic as Bravo might be, his inexperience for the job is really showing under pressure. He seems to have a single ctrl+c, ctrl+v answer for tweets, and his insistence on promoting the Halo Championship Series on his personal Twitter feed when most people aren't even able to get into a match is absurd.

You know, after all the problems and communication issues with Halo 4 (yeah, that outright LIE about the first map pack error is still fresh), Frankie said that they learnt a lot and would improve. Can someone possibly say that they improved something? I can't.

All those mentions of fixes requiring a hard reset of the Xbox One are fucking ridiculous and inexcusable.

I'm not going to bother trying MP until it's fixed but even campaign was pretty spotty in terms of performance from the 2 levels I played. Thank god I have 100 other games to tide me over.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Completely agreed.

Only console game I've ever bought digitally, and MS wouldn't refund me.

Wish I would have bought at a store, as I would have done a chargeback on my card.

... and people didn't believe me when I said MS lied about my early Halo 4 copy being "illegitimate."

Agreed. As much as I would love to play a fully functioning Halo CE on my Xbox One. I would have gladly taken a fully functional Halo 2 Anniversary standalone over this game in its current state.

Wasn't the whole advertising campaign around how they would fix all of that with Dedicated servers?

what would a recall do?

Give people their money back since most stores don't allow you to return opened games.

I would be willing to accept a ton of that if the co-op wasn't so damn broken.

It's one thing to drop some frames and claim it's 60, I'm fine with that. But damn, the co-op is just not even close to that.

This disaster makes me wonder if the game ever gets fixed. Like, if I get an Xbox One with the game a year from now, will matchmaking be working in some form by then?

I said the same thing on my Twitter a couple weeks ago. The impact is wider reaching than just a single broken game.

The Master Chief Collection needs (needed) to be recalled because of the damage that it does both to the brand and the memories of the people who played Halo since it began over 13 years ago. In five years, when you ask someone about their feelings regarding Halo 1-3, the first thing that will come to their mind is, "broken mess," rather than, "a bunch of great games." The only way to fix this problem is to erase MCC from existence and release it at a later date in the form it was originally intended to be in. Microsoft doesn't deserve the difference between sales and returns, it deserves zero sales until it releases the product it had spent months marketing.

You're absolutely right - a broken game covered in band-aids will never be a finished game.

Last night I was playing the game Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, a game released by Sega for the Gamecube. I noticed when playing it that both the single and multiplayer aspects of the game worked. I'm thinking 343 Industries should maybe call up sega (or send an email, that would work too) and ask for development tips!

People are paying 70$ for a non-functioning product.

If the game is not functioning for you or anyone else call and get a refund. Some people if works fine. I played through all 1-4 by myself and some in co-op. While I'm not happy with the amount of bugs it is by no means a non-functioning product.

I agree.
I don't consider myself a fanboy but always had a preference for MS consoles. Halo in particular was one of my sole reasons for purchasing a new MS console without fail.

My experience with Halo MCC and Halo 4 (to a lesser extent) has soured me on the franchise so much that I think I'm actually done with MS consoles.

Really disgusting how the fans have been treated and I hope they pay the price.

I tend to think that mainstream media outlets have a hard time understanding tech issues, but my hope is that someone like Slate or New York Times posts an op ed about how companies like Microsoft, Ubisoft, and EA are really screwing over consumers. And there is nothing that current media law can do to stop them.

It's working now just scattershot and generally poor. Long waits and errors are frequent.

I keep seeing this please explain to people who bought a disc where they can go to get a refund when no major store will allow them.

Considering the unquestionably broken save/checkpoint system in the primary title of the collection, even as someone who isn't invested in the online issues, I legitimately think this title should be recalled. While frustrated, I was basically patient in the early stages of the launch window. We're well past that now.

They refunded my digital copy without any problems.

Possibly I never took much notice of the advertising campaign, as I don't own an Xbox One yet (Hi Secret Santa ;) ). However, I did enjoy Halo back in the day. It's a shame it seems to have all fallen to pieces somewhat.
This was one of the games I was making me get interest in an Xbox One too :\
