DSFix 2.3 taken down after DMCA complaint [Up: Was mistake; being resolved]

DSFix is just the best kept secret at Namco.

We are all aware that From has seen DSFix themselves, they literally implemented just about every single feature in the sequel. Even Square implemented GEDOSATO's fixes to FFXIII in their patch as well.

These companies are well aware of Durante's work. They just don't go out of their way to acknowledge or improve upon the work, despite raking in the sales and having access to the source code.

This is how Scamco pays you back for fixing their broken-ass port: hit you with a DMCA complaint. I guess they wouldn't mind forfeiting all those sales that were made possible exclusively by the existence of DSFix?

Jesus Christ. What in the fuck, seriously. Durante should be hitting THEM with the DMCA.

Yeah it is super shady of Namco to basically use Durantes work and then do this. Durante is probably solely responsible for increasing dark souls awareness on PC with his fixes. I hope media coverage starts shaming them.

I don't think supporting for arbitrary resolutions and 60 FPS is really "using DSFix," it's just meeting the expectations people normally have for a PC port. Likewise, FXAA and ambient occlusion aren't exactly surprising features to see added in an updated game engine. DSFix probably tipped them off as to what features they should probably include, but having those features doesn't mean they literally copied his work.

Should they acknowledge him? It'd be nice, though they're probably obligated not to say much on the topic since they don't "officially" condone mods of any kind.

Somebody got drunk at the Bamco Christmas party and filed a dmca complaint for shits and giggles?

Someone at a company hired by Bamco probably filed it at the behest of a web crawler that thought DSFix had something to do with the debug version.

was this confirmed...? Or just a sneaking suspicion that is probably on the money?

It's pretty likely since the FFXIII settings that were added were a duplicate of the ones GeDeSaTo manipulated and nothing else that was asked for.

........<biggest sigh ever>

Im just trying to find any logic behind this move. This was the only thing that added up cause you have to be drunk to think this would not backfire.

Just to add to the chorus, I too only bought DS on PC because of Durante's patch. Otherwise I would have stuck with my shitty console version.

My interpretation of events: Bamco are trying to clamp down on people spreading the debug version of Dark Souls, which accidentally got distributed with the GFWL removal patch and potentially allows people to cheat in MP. To this end, they hired a company who used a bot to search for Dark Souls stuff on filesharing sites, and then started sending off DMCA notices all willy nilly.

Damn. Just read this now. What a load of horse shit. Hopefully you get an apology soon and a big thank you for your work, otherwise fuck Bamco.

When do these companies learn that once it is on the internet it cant be taken down.

This is utter bullshit of course, especially since DSfix does not include any of their material.

I'm actually amazed that they would do this. I mean WTF.

We have some bandai namco dudes in here, please pm them and get this straightened out

This is the most utter bullshit imaginable.

I think this must have been a mistake. The company's software probably hit a false positive with DSFix and just jumped in with the DMCA. I want to believe they aren't seriously this stupid to do this on purpose.

Has to be a mistake or some bot or something. No way someone is this dumb.

That was the general consensus about halfway through the thread. Probably a result of them trying to track down the debug exe that they let slip.

Thread's gone a bit crazy since then.

Is dropbox used a lot for piracy? This reminds me of when I uploaded a promotional render of Resident Evil 1's mansion to mediafire and I got a copyright claim on it. The same note also linked to a bunch of other files (not on my account) which were obviously links to full games, so the copyright claim must have been in error.

I'm curious if something similar happened here. Maybe Namco has hired some people to find links to piracy and try to get them down (or maybe they have a bot doing it?). I would not be surprised if there's some sites out there which offers pirated copies of Dark Souls alongside a link to Durante's tool.

I understand them wanting to stop cheating, but yeah it's probably more productive to put that effort into patching the game instead.

Yeah i mean its admirable and all to try to stop it from spreading, but like you said its better to try and patch it. Well lets hope this is all just a big mistake.

Yeah, I wish some of the "FUCK SCAMCO!" folks would take a few minutes to read the thread instead of assuming the absolute worst, but at the same time those angry messages might help get this noticed sooner.

Plus it would make for a great Neogaf Christmas story part 2.

Hopefully a just a stupid mistake. I only bought Dark Souls because of DsFix. Without it I wouldn't have given the game a time of the day.

We don't know though, what the situation is. All we have is what has been said.

Until there is an official response, assume the worst.

If no one pitches a fit about it, nothing will be addressed.

I really wanna hear Namco's response because now with a few things brought to my attention, as the patch for FF XIII was basically what Durante did plus the improved DSII PC port due to Durante again. They should give him all the credit but no, executives have too much effen pride to recognize that someone that is not working for them fixed their screw up. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Durante deserves to work in the PC division for Namco.

Uhh, MickeyKnox, No Offense, but you may wanna snip that post.

EDIT: Good lad. :p

As for The DMCA hit, I'm going to assume this is just a stupid bot false positive, but fuck, if they actually did this on purpose? Keep those Pitchforks and Torches nearby, folks.
