Sonic Runners announced during fan-event [Sonic Team / smartphones]

If, at the end of the day, this is the closest we will get to new Apotos levels, I don't see how.

Look again, that image was fan-art. Completely unrelated to this Sonic Runners thing. Also it'd be pretty lazy if they just straight up repeated levels from recent Sonic games for the big new one.

This is just a side project because Sonic Team is actually working on the PS4/XBO Sonic title, right?

Sonic is an annual franchise, the last time there hasn´t been a new console Sonic game was in....2004..... I guess.

Sonic Team's last game was released in 2013 and they are capable of developing 2 Sonics at the same time.

It's almost set in stone, there will be a new game next year.

It doesn't have to be recent, nor for the big new one to still be pretty lazy imo.
Looking at you, Seaside Hill.

I'm sure the gameplay in this one is gonna be phenomenal.

Still waiting for that multiplat Sonic Team game. Hopefully Sega won't screw that one too.

Sonic Heroes came out in 2004 in the West (it was first released in Japan at 2003's end), so unless you're strictly talking about the main series games you're right about Sonic being an annual series.

...soooo, is Sega shutting down Hardlight or what? Isn't this the sort of game they exist to make?

Anyway, if this is the stage-based, Rayman Jungle/Fiesta Run-style autorun platformer I've been asking for for years, will buy.

To the contrary they just released a major Sonic Dash overhaul last week and a Crazy Taxi game not too long ago.

Sega is just investing even more in mobile after prior success.

Aren't there two divisions of Sonic Team? The main one and the storybook one? Iirc they don't usually name which one it is, so hopefully this is storybook.

If it's anything like Subway Rush it should be pretty decent. That's a pretty decent "runner" type of game in the smartphone/tablet market from what I've played.

Meh. I have no strong feelings one way or the other. Now if they announce that the PS4 game next year has been cancelled in favour of this then I'll be pretty pissed off. But for now I just kinda don't care.

I dont think theres really anything like a fixed main team and storybook team. Just different people working on different projects depending of schedule.

Maybe this is the natural endpoint for Sonic. The fallen former mascot that has to go fast... reduced to a mobile one-button endless runner.

Maybe this is where it all was headed towards ever since the Dreamcast failed.

No, that's just what being a Sonic fan during the 2000s feels like.

but... why

they should have got the boom team to release boom on iphones. free, full of in app purchases, that's easy money from the smartphone crowd.

It's a terrible game compared to other titles in the genre.

Not really. It's one of the better endless runners I've played. Actually feels like the direction 3D Sonic should have gone all along. Plays pretty much better than any 3D Sonic game out there.

Is it bad that I'm kinda excited to learn more about this? I mean, it's being developed by Sonic Team (yeah, they don't have the best track record but they're the main Sonic devs so this has to be an important project) and there's already a Sonic endless runner on iOS so it wouldn't make sense for this to be another one. This could be something with more substance than just another cheap mobile game, and that has me kinda excited.

It certainly does not. Heck, even past Sonic running sections like the special stages of Rush or the gameplay of Secret Rings was much better.

As for other runners on iOS, stuff like Subway Runner and even Sony's own LBP Sackboy runner are better, faster, and more fun.

Isn't that Subway Rush? That's the game I was on about earlier and, yes, it's quite a good game. This new Sonic smartphone game should use that one as its model, just maybe make it a tad faster.

Btw I'm talking about the real Subway Rush. I think that vid's a parody, and I forgot there already is a Sonic endless runner. Played it once...was just decent but not as good as Subway Rush.

Remember how fun Sonic Generations was and then they never made another one?

Yeah...

That just makes it hurt worse... It's like they were embarrassed by Generations, despite it bring the best Sonic in years; the second they perfected the basic play style they started in Unleashed, they decided to abandon it for Lost World's bizarre "Not-Quite-Mario-Galaxy" gameplay.

And again, it's terrible, but Sonic Dash already is a Sonic Free-Runner. Even if it's good, why waste the effort on another?

i wonder if Sonic Runners has a chao garden. Iizuka did talk in a past Sonic Boom event about the possibility of making a chao game on mobile devices since he knew there was demand for the chao garden to return.
It still blows my mind they haven't made a Chao Garden game for smartphones. It would print money.

Mmm

There are " reasons" , many of them dumb, and not just like smart phones I mean bringing it back.

it may get into why sega in many cases is seemingly poorly run

But the Boom team is a completely separate company on a different continent, and that would invalidate their three game contract with Nintendo.

Sonic Advance 3 was their big 2004 Sonic game, even if that was on GBA. Sonic Team usually has done a main Sonic title once or twice a year, but this year they didn't put out anything.

I hope the break shows a bump in quality, for we know Sega loves that November deadline so much they've now put out two console Sonic games that are considered to be some of the worst games of all time, thanks to 06 and Rise of Lyric.

Is this what heartbreak feels like? There's a lump a the way in my stomach, and it physically hurts.

Yes a low budget mobile games killed the chances of a mediocre Sonic game getting a sequel...

It should have been Generations 2 dammit

That fan art make me imagine a level based endles runner with open levels and the Lost World's parkour system...

That doesn't sound bad for a side project

Um, are most of you guys forgetting that Lost World came out last year? If anything, this is the new Sonic game made by that team :); melding mechanics from Lost World, Colors and Rayman Jungle Run (I hope at least :l; one of the best iOS games I've every played :D) to make a fun mobile game to coenside with the new spin-off tittle coming to all platforms next year (maybe another All Stars Racing? A Sonic tittle by Sanzaru?).

I think that the Generations team is either making a Sonic game for PS4/X1 for next year or the next anniversary tittle for 2016 (either being a game melding elements from Lost World and Generations or a Generations sequel with a lot more levels to run in).

Doesn't help that one of the lead programmers of A-LIFE has defected to Square-Enix (Hashimoto designed the Luminous Engine, I believe). I hope Iizuka will see the value in a content-rich raising sim he fostered both in NiGHTs and the Sonic Adventure series. Plenty of potential for advancements in AI, with novel ways of Chao raising on top of that.

mobile is the best route for Sonic to go until Sega figures out how to make another good console game.

+ Sonic is the best possible established character to use for a side-scrolling, endless runner. I'm actually kind of looking forward to this, and I never play mobile games.

I really hope this isn't being made in lieu of a console game. I want to have hope for sonic but it's getting difficult

What colour are Sonic's arms? Apparently some people can get very irate about the little details like that. Haha.

As much as I want another Sonic Generations, I don't see it ever happening. Sega seems to push for something "innovative" with each title and probably feels like a Generations sequel would be retreading territory. But the biggest reason that the modern Sonic gameplay probably won't return is that it takes tons Of effort to create the long levels because of how fast you run through them, only to have the player whizz by everything in a short amount of time and complete the game quickly. Even if we got another Generations it would probably play more like Lost World.

So as per the initial announcement from Sonic Team we were promised more news in January and now January is almost over. Anyone heard any more on this?
