Funnily enough, what the people who cheered when Kinect was removed from the base bundle didn't realize, is that now that it is an option, it requires more attention from MS. As a default feature of the system, they could get away with offering many minor features across games and apps. But now to convince people of buying it, they need killer apps more obvious than "you can switch channels with voice commands".
Putting additional work into hardware that is no longer part of the standard SKU is a waste of valuable time and resources. The only way I can see it working is to give it over to the PC community and let them have at it as part of a larger Windows 10 initiative. Xbone never needed it and has already been damaged by it, time to move on.

The fact that MS still sells Kinect means they have to support it in some way.
Good news for owners. I thought MS wanted to dump the peripheral considering no one has heard anything about the peripheral for almost an year.
The move basically confirms Rare's responsibilities removed, which is great news for gamers.

I'm being really optimistic here, but this could be leading to a new 1vs100 type game. Avatars and kinect functionality would work really well together in game shows.

They already did that. The Kinect 2 SDK officially released, supports the console Kinects and the Windows marketplace.
But from my point of view the potential market for Kinect applications is higher on consoles than PC (if only because most PC setups won't be ideal for gesture tracking). PC for devs, consoles for users.
May lead into some VR or augmented reality applications in the future. Kinect isn't a main focus of the Xbox One anymore but it's not going to completely go away. Too much money put into it + people still using it (including ones who have recently purchased the AC Unity kinect bundle).
I'd say Harmonix has done this multiple times tbh. Rare did pretty well with the first two Kinect Sports as well.
Now if we're limiting this to something amazing that the average NeoGAF member would like... then there's quite possibly nothing that can be done with the tech that'd fit the bill.
I personally want to see more use of Kinect to bring across simple mobile style games, like what was done with Fruit Ninja (and seemingly Infinity Blade). Games like Temple Run or Subway Surfers could be pretty fun if reworked for the Kinect.

Obviously this will tie into VR somehow. I have already tried some vr with similar ideas at indiecade last year.

I would use it if there was something worth using it for i mean for me and all the people who bought it on launch we have a kinect so if it's interesting i might give it a try.
I've been wanting Surgeon Simulator. That could be an awesome kinect game.
I'm really looking forward to FRU. Pretty much the only kinect game that I'm interested in that's coming out this year.
The first bullet point under responsibilities states that the role collaborates with producers, game designers, and artists.
It makes sense for AR/VR. And I still believe that one day they will offer a competitive device to Apple TV, Fire TV, etc. that is just the Kinect, streaming games and apps from the cloud.

Kinect gets a bad rap on gaf.
But I think its a good device, I use it everyday, and there were some really good games that used it this year.

I think this will be the final strategy for Kinect - if it is indeed tied to VR or AR - before its finally put out to rest.
I imagine they saw what was being done with the morpheus and felt Kinect could play a similar role with the added benefit of body tracking

They are about 3 years too late.
Kinect belongs in a lab until it works flawlessly and has a purpose or develops into something more.
It sucks and is pointless with UI control, overkill and behind the curve with voice control, sort of works for dance/fitness, waste of time with any other games. Recognition and Skype camera not worth the ticket. Kinect serves no purpose and does most things worse and can be replaced by a cheap camera and microphone for the best things.
By all means, make it an enthusiast product for devs on Windows and see what happens but anything beyond that, no, keep it in Microsoft Research.

Bought an xbox one with kinect a year ago and have been pretty disappointed with it. The voice commands are neat but I'm not a fan of talking to my system, especially when other people are in the house.
I just recently sold it, not because I don't like it, just needed money. But when I do rebuy it it will be the kinectless version.
But I'm glad they are still focusing on it, just wish they didn't drop it when they did

Depends on what you want to do with it. For gesture tracking, the latency is probably there to stay since it will always require some time for the advanced algorithms. It doesn't mean that it can't be used, but it.won't be as efficient as devices like the move wand, which is dedicated to that task.
But there are definitely cool things that can be done with VR/AR and simple use of the depth data. I think I already mentioned the idea of doing AR and displaying visual effects like aura, flames etc. on your body. The processing is simple, and even with latency you can get convincing effects, since they are "floaty" already.
Another simple but cool thing that can be done in AR would be virtual couch co-op : instead of doing PIP video chat that nobody wants, use AR headset to display the 3D stream of your buddies playing, so that they'll seem to be in the same room. It could be a standard Skype feature by the way.

Yeah, my mother in law was impressed with how the tiny little Xbox remote you can buy that has like 10 buttons will turn on and control the console, tv, audio system and browse tv. She hates harmony remotes, lol.
She also likes being able to use voice to go to Netflix or HBO Go.

I like my Kinect. It's convenient for navigation here and there and it's the way to play D4, but I don't want them focusing on it too much.
